"Did this dude start playing instruments at like 2 months old? What the F***!" LOL!! Jacob Collier only proves there was a landing in Roswell, New Mexico. To think we lived during the time musical geniuses like this existed. Too blessed.

I think Jacobs craziest music to date is still his old covers where he'd just rip up a song as much as he could and put it back together completely differently. My favourite from that era was either 'Don't You Worry Bout a Thing' by Stevie Wonder (although a little less harshly changed), or 'Close to You' by the Carpenters (which he completely changed). The groove in it is just too good.

I always feel like dancing with this song. The joy he had recording it is really contagious.

He has talked about remembering being a small child and sitting on his mother's (Suzie Collier)'s lap while she played violin, and how he loved the feeling of the different sounds and vibrations, so I honestly think he has loved and deeply understood music from when he was in the womb. Hearing it played live from in there probably gave him a totally different initial experience of music from most people's too!

I really love this 5 by reaction series! Not just to react to single song as many of youtubers do, but to go deeper, make an analysis and get a better insight of a great musician... It's a good and original conception for a RUclips channel. I'm a fan!

David I rarely comment, however your appreciation and shall I say compassionate approach is spot on and refreshing. Your enthusiasm for the emotional contributions of Jacob’s expressions have motivated me to subscribe. Well done Sir!

If you haven't seen it already, Jacob sometimes does livestreams on RUclips where he breaks down the logic session for one of his songs and he did one for "All Night Long". ruclips.net/video/UAMc4K_NXsA/видео.html
(He explains some of how the song came into being and you will NOT BELIEVE how quickly he came up with the initial demo for this song!)

Well, not only is he a happy joyous person, but through the music he creates and his limitless inventiveness and generosity he makes many people profoundly and genuinely happy. Myself, of course, but also the audience - just watch his performances. He is a kind of a "Messiah of Music": goodness - generosity - positivity - encouragement. Humanly radiant and musically brilliant. Glad to hear you are "moved", I am too.

Thank you David for this reaction to this JC classic. It's so amazing he just reimagines works when he does a cover. With all his reimagining I never sense anything but respect for the original. It's like his amazing work is a celebration of everything the original brings up in him. Jacob did ALL the arrangements and almost as amazing to me he was completely responsible for the video...whew. I'm totally digging your take on Jacob. You know so much about music and that makes your respect and appreciation carry an extra gravitas, for me at least. Again I thank you for understanding the unprecedented nature of Jacob Collier and doing this multi-chapter examination. More people should know about Jacob and appreciations like yours really help. Oh and once again I wish to acknowledge what a top flight job you do on your videos.

I've watched your reaction several times. It's so good. I like to believe that Jacob's music is there for everyone but it is frequently the musicians who really get it. Thanks for this whole little exploration into Jacob. Really appreciated and a joy to watch.

One of the most prolific musicians we’ve seen in a very long time. He is the product of being home schooled by a classical concert violinist who allowed him the freedom to develop his natural curiosity of sound. He’s a master at the ripe old age of 26. I think he was only 21ish when he made this video. Quincy Jones plucked him right off of RUclips and he’s already won 6 Grammys. Pretty impressive young man. His joy radiates. Loved your review and reaction. Jacob is definitely on my must-see-live-asap list!! Oops, forgot I already commented on this. 😂 That’s how much I love it!

Jacob Collier went to Mill Hill County High School, an academy status school in London, and also attended the Purcell School for Young Musicians. He was not homeschooled. He was undoubtedly taught at home (I think his mother taught at the Royal Academy) but he went to school and is a well-rounded person.

I really love how you - in addition to all the 🤯🤯🔥🙂🙃🙂😅, talent, hard work, practice etc. also emphasize the extra depth, imagination and that special something, which also appears in the company of Jacob Collier ….. really really special, and to me, too, it is just as beautiful and joyful to be MOVED by him and his music🙏🏼💜❤️💚🌱🤗. What a beautiful human being and soul so generously sharing everything with us🌈💫🌟✨❤️🤗. On a celebrational note - thank you for sharing this contagious, uplifting and joyful world of Jacob and his various wonderful collabs.🥳🥳✨😄😃💚🤗.

Fun fact there were 10 hours between Jacob deciding what song he was going to get the orchestra to play and him actually recording it! Apparently he wrote the whole orchestral accompaniment in 3 hours the evening before!

He was always surrounded by music as his Mom is a concert violinist. The room he did his early videos in is his family music room. Ya, he probably did start playing at two. He also quit a Jazz university program because their definition of Jazz was too restrictive for him. It’s a privilege to watch his journey from the beginning now that my favourite band has ended theirs. From Rush to Jacob is a pretty good progression.

  • @joenorsworthy

I haven't seen anyone mention his Moon River recording here. Check Jacob's logic session for that one, too. His ability to perceive pitch at a superhuman level is astonishing; I wonder if he can tell the difference in 1Hz! His ability to make microtonal modulations using only his ear would be unbelievable to me if I hadn't watched him do it. PS really enjoyed your comments! I am forwarding this vid and your reaction to Jacob w/ Snarky Puppy to my adult daughter hoping she will appreciate your wisdom. It's applicable to more than music.

I talked to Leland Sklar about Jacob and Lee (who’s recorded with EVERYONE!!) said Jacob is a fucking genius who’s musical concepts are out of this world. High praise indeed.
Oh ya, he arranged the orchestra parts in four or five hours after procrastinating all night. He talks about it in the video someone else has posted in the comments. It’s insane to watch how fast he works.

I would love to see you 5 by 5 the wonder years or defeater. They've got a kind of cult following. solid drumming, good song writing dynamics and just a different sound that sets them apart from other bands in their genre in my personal opinion. Especially defeater being a concept band in the Hardcore realm which is really rare, would love to hear your take from the engineering/song writer perspective.

No, Jacob does all the orchestrations himself, as well as the video editing. He's unfathomably talented! Watch his Logic breakdown of this song, it's amazing :)

To be fair, he produces a midi be version in logic, then a guy called Vlad at the Metropole Orkest transcribes them into musical notational at high-speed. He could write them out himself but it probably wouldn't be a great use of his time.
