What really? His mum is a really cool person I would have loved to have her as a music teacher.
Something that's also really ridiculous about this? When he's playing in A in the beginning, it's in A-intonation (A=432 Hz). When it shifts back to A at the end, it's in just-intonation (A=440 Hz). Entirely intentional. He wanted even more of a sense of "coming back home" at the end of this song to the way the key typically sounds.
Wanted to comment this! Especially when hearing the start and end side to side, it is so "visible" how introvert it sounds in 432 and how open and home in 440!
@@koko0770 You can really feel it when you sing the base note (idk anything about music theory) at the beginning string section, keep singing that note, then skip to the very end string section. You'll be out of tune a bit at first, then your voice might naturally correct itself to go a bit higher. it's a really cool effect.

His music and perspective on life in general have changed my life. Yes, he can get pretty swept away in theory and creating music that's technically impressive more so than "enjoyable" to listen to sometimes, but the emotion and passion that runs through it all is what has kept me a fan for so many years. It's so rare that someone has both genius-level skill/talent and an inherent understanding of exactly what you said: That music is most importantly about emotion and creating something that moves people.
It made me happy that this gave you the feels like I thought it would. He is a prodigy. His space, as much as it might also be in himself, is the literal room he is playing in in the video...same room he learned to walk and play music. Same room he wrote ALL the music in. He is an amazing character.
I have a feeling he would love to chat with you about harmony and rhythm if you interviewed him!
Jacob sings in quarter-tones! He’s, simply put, a genius! Many of us Jacob fans-musicians like me and just music lovers-consider Jacob the Mozart of our generation! Listen to him with Snarky Puppy! It is astonishing to say the least!
You nailed the way I 'felt' the first time I heard this song. Wherever that hideaway is for Jacob, I sensed what it meant to him, and found myself mentally and emotionally mapping out my own destination. It's a place where I can easily picture my father who passed years ago sitting, eyes closed thoroughly enjoying this beautiful song right beside me. I mapped out what a love deep and rooted in nuturing soil feels like. It's a breezy day in spring, birds singing, crickets chirping...it feels like confidence tempered by genuine humility. It's simply beautiful.

Finished and man you hit it right on the head that his music makes you feel and moves you along side the complexity. Love Jacob man. When he lets the simple beautiful melodies shine in moments, it’s breathtaking.
In this music, he starts in A 432 and ends in A 440, compare the endnote with the first one. The magic is that he switches mid music and it's imperceptible
David...wonderful, honest, thoughtful, heartfelt. This was everything I could have wished for in a reaction video. Especially for this artist and piece. I actually have been hoping for a while that you would do some reactions to Jacob. You share so much from your own knowledge and love of music and it allows us who do not have those experiences to notice and even hear things in a more profound way. I've been a fan of Jacobs for about two years now. Since literally stumbling upon his music it has changed so much of how I appreciate and listen to music. So excited at the prospect of the next four Jacob adventures and look forward to taking that journey with you. Thanks so much for this. FYI: Jacob is currently 27 years old.

He definitely is one of the very best musicians I’ve seen. His sense of harmony and his ability to play so many instruments are just some of the things that amaze me. I do think it can be hard to listen and follow sometimes, but the effort is worth it cause when he hits the spot, he’s truly unrivaled. I can’t wait to see the four remaining ones. Im curious to see what songs you’ll pick.
And as far as amazing singers go, I’d really, really, really love to see your reaction to Leprous. They are one of the few other artists that are just so moving. (I know the name is not appealing, but really check out “Castaway Angels”. I truly believe you’ll enjoy them).
I got introduced to Daniel Caesar through Jacob and man I fell in love with Daniels albums Freudian and CASE STUDY 01. the gospel influence hits me at my core.
One more thing…..Jacob is so overwhelmingly talented but sometimes his, if a little is good a lot is better tendency can overwhelm the beautiful core of what he’s doing, for me at times.
But hard not to be wowed by the skill and his massive talent always. But sometimes I have found the things of his I like the best are live because he is more limited in his tendency to overdo.
Was the song, Yellow Brick Road?
He is obv super talented, but feel like he leans too much on "look what I can do" and visual wizardry of videos. No sense of the artist, the person behind it.
Imo his most recent record (Djesse Vol3) is his best songwriting, and shows he’s maturing and compromising the extreme technicality of his music with beautiful, slightly more classic songwriting in a super digital, detached and ethereal format
I’m so glad I found your first of five reactions. I’m a big Collier fan and look forward to watching a live performance in April. He is an inspirational musician and someone who seems to exude joy, which may be one of his most overlooked and important qualities.
The ending, same as when we began but "finally" in 440 hertz tuning - or something like that - compare the guitars from the intro with the outro! He wanted the sound and feel to "open up" by shifting the tuning slightly during the songs progression and I completely understand what he means by that when hearing the difference! You have to do 'Moon River'!

I love your reaction to this song! Hideaway is the song that introduced me to Jacob's music. I was working as a pizza delivery driver during my second year of music school; this song happened to come on my playlist on the way to a house and it absolutely captivated me. This was 4 years ago and I still remember the neighborhood I was in when I heard it; which is crazy because I drove so many places on that job. Now I'm a music teacher, about to finally graduate, and I chose this song for an analysis paper I'm writing. I'm not a jazz person, nor am I super adept at hearing modulations, extended chords, and polyrhythms, so writing this paper is about to be an undertaking! I also saw him at the Kennedy center in September and wow. It was the most eclectic, instrumentally diverse, and musically dynamic concert I have ever been to; and I've had the privilege of seeing a great deal of concerts in my youth. What I love about Jacob is as complex as his music can be, it's never written without feeling. It's very accessible to the listener... He makes me want to become more of a jazz and R&B player even though that's not really my wheelhouse.

Also I wish you were my music teacher. We had a very successful band but our conductor/teacher was closer to whiplash than you.
I think. After watching most of his videos. The only things Jacob can’t play at a top tier level are wind instruments.

BTW if you're wondering why the intro is off key to your piano it's because he starts the song playing a guitar tuned to 432hz just to throw everyone for an unconscious loop lol 😆

This piece replaced Rachmaninov's Sonata No. 2 Op36 as my favorite piece of music ever. It is devastatingly gorgeous. Jacob has raised the bar two clicks above the best of today's best musicians.

I’m surprised how relatively unknown he is. The day we filmed, I asked like 10 people if they knew him. Only one said yes!
He’s well known among the serious music community. Especially those with a focus in jazz. The kid was discovered by Quincy Jones on RUclips…but was brought up by a mother who immersed her son in every musical genre. She is a professional classical violinist and encouraged Jacob to follow his heart. My mother is a Dr. of Music Theory. She was an adjunct professor at Hofstra for many years. I come from a family of nightly accomplished musicians. My aunt Joan was the a director of admissions at Mannes school of music, my uncle is a conductor of the Walla Walla Symphony Orchestra and my step-father is a musician and record producer/owner at Dreamland Recording Studio in Bearsville, NY. Music is in me. Music is my love language. Watching you react to these videos has been a real treat! He’s like no other musician on earth. Thank you for what you do. I don’t often come across people who appreciate music on such a deep cellular level.
