Many years ago, when I was a kid, I would just look through the Metzen art books that came with Blizzard games. There was a magic about their games. They made you want to be a part of their world. Now they are doing their homework on psychology to intentionally take advantage of people and take as much of their money as they can. What a colossal disappointment.
When I was in the 3rd grade, I had child services called on my parents from one of my teachers at school because I had scetched the Orc from the vanilla game manual. Apparently the shoulder pads were 'Too violent" lmaoooo
I remember WC3 custom game platform, that was insanely good, it had so much potential. Removed because they couldn't find a way to monetize the work of fans. Make this company disappear already.
the worst part is that it ISNT a bad game. It however, uses extremely predatory monetization structures that prey on human psychological tendencies to spend unreasonable amounts of money for little gain.

15:30 McConnel is 100% right. Don’t do it. It isn’t worth it. The only way to make a change in the industry is to make them lose money. If you give them anything they will continue to do this garbage in gaming as long as they make money. It begins and ends with the consumer.
Then keep on ignoring the game and whatever other sh*t Blizzard pulls out. You already know and can see the damage these types of systems do to videogames and people. Now, for the idiots that need to actually SEE the damage these things do or how bad it can get, we have Asmon using his money and platform to expose them.
@@alegiusti7989 Actually, F2P mobile games have always been funded by 2% of the players. 98% of the players don't pay a dime. If they want to get $1 out of everyone, they would make you watch an AD every time you open a chest.
@@alegiusti7989 The single person is better. A thousand people paying one dollar each is a Fairweather gain, that thousand will have some people get bored and move to another game, they didn't invest much money so there isn't much reason to stay. Then your thousand people, next quarter, is like seven hundred. The quarter after that, five hundred, you get the idea. While that single Whale is *locked in*, sunk cost fallacy kicks in with all of the predatory psychological manipulations that prey on that person's mental state. For them, they invested a thousand dollars! They can't QUIT! That'd be a waste of a thousand dollars! So we need to invest more money to make that thousand dollars we spent feel justified! So next quarter, that one person is still paying a thousand... Or, hey, maybe more if you turn up the gears slow enough. Then more the next quarter, and the next quarter. Yeah sure maybe that person is skipping meals and defaulting on their apartment, but it's the only escape they have from their crappy life and they have an addiction they can't kick. So from a very cold corporate perspective? The one whale is *absolutely* more profitable then the thousand one dollar payers.
@@alegiusti7989 yes whales are a solid earning pool. The top ~5% of spenders in these games usually make up around ~95% of the profit. A player who spends only 5-100$ per month is negligible. Whales often spend 5k-20k$ a month on mobile games. How do you think many mobile games manage to make millions or at least hundreds of thousands every month. Just a couple of small spenders doesn't help there.
"don't you have phones?!" or what was it, some years ago... Blizzard is dead for a long time to me, so at least I'm not disapointed... but still sad, and it's not just Blizzard... :/ in China and other countries it's already normal to pay... I might just gog some old games and emu on my Steam Deck (in 2024, when it will be shipped, probably... ) and save a lot of money
@@gwfranklin1 I've found a forum where some discuss their pre-order time and if it is true and not some evil joke ;) last week Valve only has minute 50 after official pre-order in mid July 2021, sent the real order email out. I'm sure this entire situation is infuriating for the devs, imagine spending so much time on a game, everyone I've heard so far has said the gameplay is really good, and then the entire game that you've spent months working on, that you know is a good game, is just torn to shreds by whoever decides all of this microtransaction crap. Let's hope Diablo 4 is better

Everyone who thinks that anything will get better in future entries also believes that our universe is made out of nachos. Seriously how naive can you be ? Didnt you pay attention to what blizzard is ? All you can hope for is that you find a better company that gives a 💩 and not hope for a better game. Diablo died long ago.
I'm surprised that even for "fun" streamers in a attempt to show how insanely ludacrous the pay-to-win is, they had give blizzard even more money besides the downloads.... could've just torched the reviews without ever buying the game, and swear of blizzard from ones life.

They had a path to redemption. It was long but it was there. Now the only way the rep can be restored is to gut the Blizzard department completely, which only Microsoft will ever consider doing, and its probably the last thing they want to have to do.
I've played lost ark, I've played 5 different gacha games over the course of nearly a decade, and none of them even come close to this level of insanity, evil, deception, manipulation, or greed. Other games are consciously trying to not cross the line into exploiting gambling, addiction and other mental fallacies, because they know the shit they can get into if the line is crossed. Blizz are literally hiring psychologists to figure out how to maximally exploit every gambling, addiction, mental fallacy, as if they were operating an unregulated underground casino. It's actually bananas the evil and cynicism this company has embraced.
You guys are missing another huge point. Gaming is amazing because it puts you in a fantasy world where everyone is on a level playing field. This brings the same capital class systems that plague the real world. Suddenly you are fighting a battle you cannot win no matter your skill level or how much time you spent training.
@@Sabamonster You are creating an argument that doesn't make sense because you misunderstood my statement. A level playing field means everyone starts with the same stats, gear and game sense and can only improve by time spent in game. If you introduce a way to gain power over people or unobtainable gear by spending money you create an insurmountable obstacle for lower class citizens no matter how much time they spend in game. How do you not understand that?
Warren Buffett once said that "A brand is a promise". The trust between a consumer and a brand they trust has a lot of value, and Blizzard is pursuing short term profits at the cost of long term growth and revenue further down the line. It's a very short sighted way to manage a company. There's a book that describes this problem in many american corporations called, "The Man who Broke Capitalism". It's about how Jack Welch took one of the oldest and most powerful corporations (General Electric) and drove it into the ground by chasing quarterly earnings.
Thanks for the Recommendation, but I figured that Welch never broke anything that are not broken in the first place. He is simply a competitive man whose competitive tactics worked and copied. The real problems is that people forgot that capitalism is not about morality or good products or customers or competition. It is about the freedom to accumulate capital, and people who owned the brands, accumulated as much as they can, in anyway they can, even to the expense of others as intended. General Electric is owned by Thomas Edison and J.P. Morgan, ask Tesla the socialist what their short-sighted did for electricity availability.
its actually really sad seeing the last shred of hope people had for Blizzard get destroyed, like I’ve never been a fan of their games but I respected the quality of their titles and to see them become what they are now is like seeing a famous athlete retire and resort to drug abuse
Not sure I agree with the start drugs analogy, since that just effects them directly. I would say it is much more like retired athletes shilling for NFTs to their audience; I beleive Sugar Ray Leonard threw away his reputation like this. That directly affects the financial well-being of his audience in a predatory manner.
I hope this will keep getting worse and worse, because it creates endless content for me. I enjoy listening to people complaining about this stuff. It's so satisfying to watch Bellular shitting on Blizzard after all the years of praise he gave this god awful company. Let it never end!
Lol of course it will, wait til the power creep happens when they introduce more p2w stuff, and clan events that peer pressure people into paying even if they don't PvP.
It's getting to a point where governments need to step in with some strong consumer protection laws. I'm not expecting that to happen so I think your hopes will be well founded. Cheers to all the future good content.
I couldn't even play an hour without getting bugged for money. I remember in the early days you could go a day without MTX being shoved down your throat. This game wanted .99 at first, then $5, then $20, then $100. All within an hour.
The people in the reply section are all delusional, yes we know you can ignore it and play something else, that's not the problem, the problem is that a company has gone to such a low that they arnt even trying to hide all the pay to win aspects of their game, they have 3 battle passes simply ignoring it will not make the problem any better, this game sets a bad example to all other company's and in the future could lead to more and more games becoming blatant in wanting to take your money, series you love can also eventually go down this route, when games get even worse dont you dare complain of you were one of the people who were ignoring it or excusing their practices.

@surg1cal Like it or not but gear and gearing up is a key component of Diablo games. That's what keeps people coming back to Diablo 1 and 2 getting the best gear possible for your build (Path of Exile has the exact same mechanics). And now all of the best stuff is locked behind a paywall, unless you WANT to spend 10 years just to be 9 years and 6 months behind people who pay. And consider that the pay wall is SO integral to the gameplay that Blizzard couldn't even disable it to be able to put the game out in Belgium and Netherlands. @@pixeljauntvr7774 And that attitude is how gaming got to this point. Sure, they're not physically forcing you but they are manipulating you. Making you think that you have to. The part at the end "it doesnt matter, those people are still going to go off and do stupid shit like that anyway," while you're right, dumb people are going to make dumb choices no matter what, the problem still persists that you playing and paying AND advertising it for your own profit does in fact normalize this shit and encourage others to do the same, and ultimately rewards blizzard for their own malicious design.. but you dont care because you profit from it to, making you just as bad as blizzard. Rather than them choosing to go with a sensible but profitable design (something like how square enix runs dissidia opera omnia) they chose to manipulate and exploit their players for money in the most extreme ways possible... you to are manipulating and exploiting this situation in ridiculous ways for your own profit regardless of the broader reaching negative consequences, you dont care because "fuck you, got mine." They could have chosen a better but still profitable path even if it was less profitable than exploiting their players and dragging the industry down.. and you could have chosen a better but still profitable path even if it was less profitable than manipulating and goading your audience in your own way, which, what a surprise, is also dragging gaming down. I get it, as a "streamer" you need to ride the trends, just like with elden ring, ff14, new age, etc, its how you stay relevant and make money. But in this one case, where the game is incredibly maliciously designed to exploit the user in every way possible and is a fucking shitstain on the face of gaming, you could have taken the better path, gotten in touch with other streamers and all decided and publicly announced you'd be boycotting playing the game because of how vile blizzard has been about exploiting their players.... but no, you'd rather choose to do what you always do, make up bullshit to rationalize your poor behavior.. ya know.. the same shit blizzard does... so that you can keep doing what you do even at the expense of players and the industry as a whole. I despise what belluar wants, which is government legislation to stop these practices by game companies.. I hate the idea of corrupt and stupid politicians sticking their dicks in gaming yet again. But maybe thats the only solution, since assclowns like you, who HAVE the power, have the voice, have the reach, have the influence, have the social and professional connections, to actually make an impact and put enough pressure to make companies like blizzard change course... someone like you refuses to do any of that and would rather just exploit the situation for your own profit rather than take the high road. You're just a pathetic asshole, no better than the blizzard devs who designed the shitshow that is diablo immortal.
"Eroding how reasonable normal is." That is why people have been able to slowly be desensitized to violence in the world, politics, everything. It's always just the next thing, a little worse, and we accept it, because we were trained to accept it.
Diablo immortal makes genshinimpact look cheap, atleast if you're a whale in genshin, the most you'd pay if you're going for c6 (7 copies of a character) it would cost you 1200-2200 depending on your luck. And atleast with that you get game changing upgrades to that character. Keeping in mind most people will only go for 1 copy of the character and be done. Instead of 50k for reduced incoming damage in diablo immortal.
asmon says "not playing a game just doesn't work", but it does. Its rare but its literally just a matter of numbers. Starwars battlefront 2 is an excellent example of this. Its microtransactions were so predatory, so absurd, that the playerbase said "fuck this" and they actually rolled that shit back to a semi playable state. With how egregious these microtransactions are people could do the same with diablo immortal, so saying "oh that's just not possible" is patently ridiculous. Going into these systems and whaling the shit out of them isn't how you get change. you're effectively going "hey viewers look at what you COULD have if you just spend a few bucks!", while also supporting blizzard themselves for implementing the systems. If you actually wanted to showcase these systems in their egregiousness to enact change you'd literally be doing the opposite. Showing viewers how much worse the experience is as a f2p, rather than how much better it is as a whale.
Dude, you know what would be really awesome and 4th-barrier breaking? Imagine if in Diablo Immortal we discovered that Diablo is actually possessing the top-investors of Blizzard. Like, IRL. That's some pretty strong assertions about things you have no proof of. You put too much value on petty amounts of cash and not enough to wider social effects.
The horse armor in oblivion was over priced but it did not cause this, That was a one time payment. This is the end result of everyone paying for lootboxes. Blizzard released Overwatch in 2016, a full priced $60 game with lootboxes. That game did great sales wise, that paved the way to push harder on monetization.
The "vote with your wallet" is a terrible mindset, it doesn't apply to games with microtransactions because they make the majority of money from a very limited subset of players, so unless you're in that top 5%, the devs don't care about you playing or not. All the time people were able to get something to change was because of major backlash on social media, review bombing, lawsuits and general negativity aimed at the devs, all of the people that participated in that most likely were already playing the game and did what they did precisely because they were invested in it.
Just remember, since day one of this game being announced, they were targeting children with these systems. "Slay demons with the whole family!" They advertised it as a family game, a family game that'll sap you and your children of all your money. What a disgusting company.
the thing is in metacritic this game still have 7.9 critics score, with 1, 6 user review, this seems the trend just like GT7, the critics mostly looks just the game aspect and completely disregard or turn blind eye of the MTX(or they all shills), but the user are the one who had to pay the price of predatory monetization

11:00 "So you buy the crests with real money and then you use the crests to get a higher chance..." Close. You buy the currency to buy crests with real money and then you use the crests for a chance to get an overpowered item that you can't get if you're F2P that you then need to spend more money on to level up by buying more currency that buys you more crests that gives you more gems that you use to upgrade the overpowered item. It's pay to win and obfuscated gambling and distancing people from having a realistic view of what things cost and hiding the largest portion of the actual cost for that item to have it at its max level, all rolled into one. Strangely enough, only the gambling part is why it's banned from The Netherlands and Belgium. Obscuring costs so that the player has no idea what something costs and making them pay with fictional currency is completely legal. A legendary crest costs $2.64 or 2,3733... pounds. And yes, that was on purpose so you have no way of calculating in your head how much money you've put in. Slightly less and definitely not round numbers when you buy with a 5%, 10%, or 15% discount. Even the 4.5% chance of getting a 5 star gem is purposefully not 5% because that would make calculating too easy by converting that to 1/20, but that was almost unnecessary because that 5 star gem will only be 1/5 most of the time and only have a 1% chance of being 5/5. But yeah, let's say you have a 5% chance, then it would be easy to say it's a 1/2000 chance to get a 5/5 legendary gem and people would. Making it 4.5% does stop people from saying it's less than 1/2000 chance and even that was on purpose. They literally used literally every trick in the book on literally everything in the game. I wouldn't even be surprised if Diablo III was made the way that it is just to prime people for this game, just so the style of storytelling and questing would be familiar and that especially non gamers and phone gamers would be drawn in because it's so incredibly easy and has no challenges besides understanding gazillions of currency, upgrades, spamming lots of graphics and big numbers and colours to distract from the lack of an actual game underneath.
The question I really have is, how much did they spend on developers' salaries vs how much they spent on studying the psychology of addiction and how to perfectly take advantage of that.

49:11 GunZ the Duel did this back in the day. People who want better equipment that gives more health and armor, guns that do more damage, and healing items that heal a lot more would spend money for it and they only last like a month and they'd have to buy it again just to have an edge on the normies.
What's really bad about this system is that you can easily see how the gems could have just been built into the in-game progression system. The "pass" could just be the normal drop rates. You could just not have daily login rewards. This is really depressing in my opinion.
the drop rates for end game content aren't actually bad. The rarest items in D2 have crazy low odds of dropping too. What's bad is that you can pay a shit ton of money to just get whatever you want, which makes those drop odds feel utterly terrible as a f2p player.

He already did
@@alegiusti7989 Actually, F2P mobile games have always been funded by 2% of the players.

Gaming is amazing because it puts you in a fantasy world where everyone is on a level playing field.

Shesh... That's deep.
@@Sabamonster You are creating an argument that doesn't make sense because you misunderstood my statement.
A level playing field means everyone starts with the same stats, gear and game sense and can only improve by time spent in game.

It's about how Jack Welch took one of the oldest and most powerful corporations (General Electric) and drove it into the ground by chasing quarterly earnings.
well said
The same buffet who bought millions of Blizzard shares weeks before Microsoft takeover? 🙄

Not sure I agree with the start drugs analogy, since that just effects them directly. Rather than them choosing to go with a sensible but profitable design (something like how square enix runs dissidia opera omnia) they chose to manipulate and exploit their players for money in the most extreme ways possible... you to are manipulating and exploiting this situation in ridiculous ways for your own profit regardless of the broader reaching negative consequences, you dont care because "fuck you, got mine." I get it, as a "streamer" you need to ride the trends, just like with elden ring, ff14, new age, etc, its how you stay relevant and make money.
Fuck you, I don't tell you not to spend your money on guns, alcohol, women or drugs, dont tell me what to do with my money
If you're going into a P2W game, knowing its P2W, you're going to pay or you're f2p to begin with.
So is it just a yearly tradition to pretend like "This one thing ruined Blizzard"?
Dollar is to Buck as Pound is to Quid
Attic Jesus you are my new fav streamer thanks for the hard work bro
Asmon logic here is just crazy. Going deep in the game to show how deep are its problems will only bring more people into the game. Look at how many people started FF14 because of him. Look at how many people started lost ark because of him. Heck, I never liked pay to win games and I started playing lost ark after watching him. I even felt tempted to try Diablo immortal too. The denial of his influence just doesn't make any fuckiong sense.
Reminds me of a "documentary" where a guy ate nothing but fast food to showcase the damaging effect it has on the human body.
“What do you guys not have phones?” turned into “what do you guys not have wallets?” real quick
172k for bellular is pretty kewl. I hope you guys actually go and support their channel. They are also a game making studio with some type of pc release in the work for a survival game. Been watching them for years.
11:00 "So you buy the crests with real money and then you use the crests to get a higher chance..."
Close.
Blizzards reputation is already in the toilet. They truly are a cancer on the gaming industry
You could travel to every iconic place in the entire world for $600-$1800 for a weekend each, or you could max a character in Diablo immortal
They didn't even talk about immortal and shadow system.
This system is ground breaking compared to other mobile p2w games. Evil genius.
The question I really have is, how much did they spend on developers' salaries vs how much they spent on studying the psychology of addiction and how to perfectly take advantage of that.
Hmm, at this point you can just outsource that research to a company specializing in data analysis and collection such as Alphabet-corp. Activision already has that information on lock.
I don’t play these days but why people keep ranting about a game nobody is forcing them to play…? If it were me, I would made it more expensive so F2P would play another game.
i disagree with the initial statement. After Warcraft 3 ref*cked and Diablo 2 Resuwrecked and WoW Shadowblands Blizzard doesnt have a Reputation left to ruin. Add the real life scandals and people jumping the ship....Blizzard is dead.
And in my honest oppinion they already f*cked up Diablo 3 by eleminating difficulty and taking the "dark horror" out of the game that created the dark horror fantasy genre
22:35
I’d argue that it wasn’t horse armor it was game line. Although, I do remember saying to myself “why did I buy this? That was stupid of me.” And I never bought dlc again unless I thought it was a TREMENDOUS value.
And even before Game Line there were modifications to cartridge and floppies
People are only even talking about this game because as Diablo in it`s name, Grafic is absolutely generic and it's the most pay to win game out there.
Can't wait for this to carry over into retail!! Just got your BIS on the newest raid... sweet that will be 4.99 cents to equip it. What you don't have PayPal on your phone!?
49:11 GunZ the Duel did this back in the day. People who want better equipment that gives more health and armor, guns that do more damage, and healing items that heal a lot more would spend money for it and they only last like a month and they'd have to buy it again just to have an edge on the normies.
I think some people missed that Asmon was totally being sarcastic and facetious.
Times like this make me miss Totalbiscuit. His gaming journalism was on a different level. The only one who came close was Adam Sessler.
Sess ain't what we was but I feel you. Yeah tb would be leading the charge to murder this game lol.
Oh, TB would be ripping blizzard a new one with his coverage
Imagine a world where horse armor was never added in Oblivion and Quantum TV never reviewed Elden Ring.
Who needs reputation? Reputation doesn’t pay your luxury lifestyle. Only money does and that’s what they get either way. There is no place for any kind of idealism or ethics.
It's called diablo immortal, because you have to be immortal to reach proper end game without paying.
They made it to be played on servers so noone could play it singleplayer offline and mod the pay to win out
Honestly, I'm with McConnell on the argument. He's an absolute whack, but he knows his own sht got together more than Asmon does.
19:29 Lazy eye. Almost puked. Caught me off guard.
I played DI for about 20-25 levels. Saw how horrible the p2w aspect is and quit without spending a dime. Whales gonna be whales however.
What extension does he use to adjust volume? like in 1:10
