I think his argument just lacks a bit of consideration of other factors. Yeah maybe some people might create a character that resembles their looks but I don’t think it’s the majority. I think people. Hose their characters by much more standards then “I want myself in the game”. My best friend (male) ALWAYS chose to play female characters in the soulsborne games. I (female) almost exclusively play male characters because I want my character to fit the story, environment and the task at hand. For me it doesn’t feel right to play a female character in dragon age because I’m up against a serious threat that requires my character to be physically strong, an exceptional leader and a terrifying monster when he needs to be. So I chose to be a dark qunari warrior. And I think for me it’s just the archetype of the hero or warrior that influences me when creating my characters. And since this archetype is a predominantly male archetype my characters are almost exclusively male. Only character I chose to play as a female was a recreation of lady Maria from Bloodborne after my first playthrough cause I wanted to experience her story. And I played her in Elden ring after my first playthrough (as a male). So yeah..

Asmon: Almost 80%, probably higher of people will choose a race similar to what they are''. The way this was phrased suggested that when being able to choose between races and species, people would choose same/similar races rather than other species.
WoW community is 64% horde with over 35% of the population being elves(different species, not race) of some kind and almost half of the characters female(with a majority of elves being female, and I doubt there are that many women playing wow and that female elves are almost monopolised by women). You have to include the Kul tiran into the human race for it to go over 10%. And that is just in modern wow, I could not find any reliable data for tbc bc.
Being something we are not in real life can be a big part of roleplaying for far more people than you realise, especially in fantasy settings with magic, which do not exist in real life, your argument for why other races dont count.
We live in a world that is getting worse by the day, with a possible nuclear war on the horizon. Many people who play video games play them to take a break from reality or outright escape from it, many of them will not want to self insert themself, instead they will want to be someone new.
But not all people play games for the roleplaying element, there are also those that are just in it for the gameplay, and among those there is also the men that rather than staring at the backside of a man for hours on end would prefer to look at a womans.

Also, orcs are ripped, which I seriously doubt most wow players are, but then I wouldnt know for sure as I havent played modern wow since legion and classic wow since beginning of tbc. OW2 being [partially] free is not something I give Blizzard any credit for. They didn't do it because it's the player-friendly thing to do. If they could've made a lot off it, they would have in a heartbeat. Half the maps aren't even balanced for the changed player count, there aren't any noticeable changes to graphic quality, and it overall just feels like OW1 patches, not a new game. They would've sold the PvP mode too if they were confident about the reception of doing so.
Same goes for loot boxes. They didn't suddenly wake up to it being unethical game design; they designed the game with it fully in mind and reluctantly changed after the fact.

What about the heroes in Apex? Those heroes (afaik) have different abilities. Obviously having fun takes priority over looking like yourself.
People play as women? Maybe it's just me but I tend to play first as myself for story games and then if I play it again (Mass Effect for example, where I play a guy first), I'll play as a girl so that the voice acting feels fresh (because fun/freshness took priority).
I did go with the default white dude in Fallout 4 (I'm mixed race), but that's because IMO it's somewhat the intended face for the male character, and the voice matches the face. Same for the female character.

If you have the option to create a character, do you really always try to re-create yourself or an image of yourself?
Aren't RPGs about roleplaying? Creating a fantasy that isn't necessarily real and playing in it? I get that sometimes you want to have a player-insert, but do you really ALWAYS create yourself? Does your stance change if the character appearances have stat differences (WoW racials), or would you still choose a black human?
Also, you said that "If I’m playing a customizable rpg, my character is going to be black" and "There are people like me that just plays whatever character looks the prettiest". So do you choose your character based on your race, or being aesthetically pleasing / looking nice?

Nobody is arguing that the mmo fanatics of Asmon's stream play diverse characters, but if you put the average person in front of a MMO character select screen, they would make a character of their own gender and race, it's not fucking rocket science man. You do whatever you want, but don't act like you represent other people because you're insecure about your decisions. I tend to make my characters unique and diverse as I can, because I come from a D&D background and I enjoy challenging myself in the creation of a character, but I don't argue that the trend among the vast majority of people is to self-insert. have some sense. Here’s a solid argument about the whole “race and character” debate if we are REALLY generalizing a lot of the nuances in this topic. In my humble opinion, I don’t think an overwhelming majority of players are creating their characters based on “themselves”.
I do however, believe that an overwhelming amount of players create their characters based on how they’d like to be conceived in-game by other players, while providing themselves some level of relatability from their characters (so they don’t feel detached from their characters). Which in other words, instead of the “real themselves”, they are creating these characters on the “idealized themselves”.
Now of course this is a broad assumption with no empirical back up, but so does Asmon’s personal opinion, so I think this could make for a good argument against it.
My ACTUAL opinion on this topic is it is personal preference, there’s no way I believe that can statistically prove either point of view. So Asmon saying 80% are doing this, it might as well be because he is doing this, same as me saying it’s because of that, it’s confirmation bias.
But as an audience, watching this debate starts with Asmon dealing with the trolls intelligently (like not starting a poll) and ends with him stating anybody disagreeing him is a moron is quite sad to be honest.
Having confidence in your belief is good, but when said belief is lacking in foundation or based purely on personal experience, it can also be dangerous and misguided. There’s a thin line between confident and opinionated.

"Look at WoW facebook group, 80 percent there will look like they look like their profile photo." ... If you look on data on races in retail WoW, "human-like" races (humans and elves) don't make more than 45% of characters created in the game (The data from 2019 I could find). So if Asmongold claims that 80 percent of people there follows his "People will try yo look like themselves." trope, the Facebook group don't represent reality then. (Or 35% of playerbase in real life resembles an Orc, Troll or Tauren more than they resemble Human or Blood-Elf.) So, absolutely useless as an argument. ... His claim was that most people will choose to look similiar in the game as they look in real life . The counterargument is that it would mean that 80 percent of characters in the game would be of "human-like" races. And you cannot dismiss it with "But Orcs aren't in real life." because, if Orcs are not in real life, that's the definition of something you will not choose by its very definition as "similar to you", yet a lot of people do, so it's self-evident that a lot of people don't choose their characters in the game on the aforementioned basis if they have a chance otherwise.
I am not saying there isn't this factor (It definitely is.), I am just saying that in this case Asmongold argument is just pulling numbers out of a hat without any ability to back it up. In this case, all Asmon has provided is logically inconsistent claims and anecdotal evidence.

excluding fantasy races like orcs, excluding pre made characters like most games have. strictly MMOs and rpgs and certain other "create a character" games like far cry 5. his point is generally that people enjoy playing characters resembling their own race/skin color in real life. the counter points are all about the gender of the character or what about this one character with a set race, like Liu kang from MK for instance. regardless if you make a female character, being a male IRL, his point is most people would still make that character the same skin color as them IRL.
to this effect I agree with him, it just was poorly articulated lol.
even I am currently playing far cry 5 as a female character, as a male IRL. even though you almost never see your character model, which I forgot when I made it at the beginning of the game. I still made the character white..... until I found a clothing shop and realized I could straight up play as citra from far cry 3.

I think you're absolutely right, the big problem is he purposefully called out WoW as his example which is made up of mostly non-human races and is predominantly Horde which only has blood elves as a reasonable approximation. If he had used, as you said, far cry or dark souls or something else where you make a human self insert he probably wouldn't have gotten as much push back.
I think in every game where I have to make a self insert human, I either make an idealized version of myself or a hot girl but whenever there's an option to be a fantasy race I always pick something non-human because it's different and unique, like why would I want to make the 50 millionth human when I can make an Orc or a Hrothgar or something else that's a lot less common.

27:00 I used to play as a guy character in fantasy games, and I wanted him to be basically what I'd wish I'd be in that fantasy world. So I tried to make him as close to me as possible, but much more masculine, a full set of hair, no glasses. After I broke up with the last girlfriend I had, I've been mostly making a female character. I can confidently state that my choice of character creation represents and reflects on my desires or lack of something from IRL. I wouldn't be surprised if ASM is right that statistically speaking, most people make characters that represent their race, but I think the bottom line is that *people just make characters that they want*. What influences that, which they want in a character, it can be many different factors. It doesn't need to be based on appearance. It just so happens that maybe most people just don't have anything better or original to want from a fantasy character, so they "self-insert", instead of making an interesting character. So you see a lot of people make characters of the same race, appearance or whatever. I think asm is on the right track with what he's going for, but he's wrong in regards to the bigger picture.

I once suggested on reddit that the next mass effect game main character should actually be a batarian, because there's so much story potential there to look at the events of the previous games through the lens of a batarian, where someone like shepard is going to be a more complicated figure.
No matter how much shepard united everyone against the reapers, their decisions killed 300,000 batarians, even if it was a 'choose the lesser evil' situation where the real culprits were people who didn't listen to shepard for too long. You could go so many ways. Factions within batarian society who have a more nuanced take and try to take lesson in how the event is an example of the consequences of government systems who don't do enough until it's too late, whereas other factions let what happened with Shepard validate their speciesism against humans. Then there's the whole fact that they're also pretty much a nomadic society now that's been splintered from so much of their civilization being destroyed. There's A LOT of potential there.
But at least in the wee midnight hours when I posted it, everyone fucking hated this idea because no one wanted to play as a batarian. Because of course. People want to be able to choose what they look like and the ability to make characters that look like themselves. Playing as a fem shep or male shepard fundamentally feels different as well, even if you're fine with either.

    1. Mother's who still breastfeeding, need to collect the milk frequently (Usually 3-4 hours, but it depends on a lot of factors.) or it will have consequences: if you don't do it your body will stop producing it and the more problematic one you will leak. Sounds stupid but it's really embarrassing so you need to be cautious about it. And you need a peaceful place to do it where no one bothers you.
    2. Who stole the milk actually robbing a baby from his/her food. And stealing from children is really low level.
    3. Breast milk expensive and a lot mother struggleing to produce it. So they try to collect as much as they can to be able to give the most for their little ones.

Not to mention the baby formula shortage that is happening. Stealing the breast milk is just cruel. Women want to breastfeed and they want to keep their jobs as well, so a lot of employers offer a comfortable place where they can pump. It’s usually just an unused office with a mini fridge.

It also doesn't even reflect reality, most of the real world is NOT diverse, there are many countries like Japan that are 80+% nationals, with very few outsiders. Or, for example, if the game setting doesn't make sense to be diverse(Like maybe half of the world got destroyed or you're in a very isolated place like a small Island) then that's perfectly fine. I wouldn't EXPECT there to be a wide diversity of races/colors/etc if I'm playing a game set in a small town in Greenland or Alaska or something, or maybe a game set in an Eskimo village.

@@TheOnlyGhxst My issue with this whole conversation is that people act like "over representation" is inherently bad or something.
If people don't care about "representation" then it shouldn't matter if they made an entire cast indian for "no reason." They have nothing to do with the story, or they're character, they just happen to be Indian, and gay, and they're non binary or some shit.
You can't tell me people wouldn't get triggered, even if the game was good. Complaining about adding these kinds of characteristics implies there HAS to be a reason for a character to be that way, and that they don't need a reason to be a cis straight white dude. The truth is that there doesn't have to be a reason, and it doesn't harm anyone to add representation to more media. Literally the ONLY reason to complain is that you have some weird feelings about whichever characteristics they're focusing on.
In reality these companies are being scummy and trying to bribe sales with diversity, that's true. The problem is that this basically has no real bearing on the game anyway. If a game is bad, it was always gonna be bad, it just happens companies have ways of selling crap. There's no difference between a game having CGI trailers, "Forced" diversity, preorder bonuses (like NMS), etc.. There's nothing inherently wrong with a company using those things, the issue is companies use these to hide their lack of good games.

A large majority of people that do that are self-inserting. There are exceptions definitely, but i feel that is the majority. It causes the data to be skewed by ignoring specific groups. It's like asking a group of amish people what from of transport they use, and then using that data to say that most people use a horse and buggy for transport.

They also start leaking after a while, and it's not just a fews drips either, it's full on stream squirting. Turns out japanese spicy cartoons get that part very accurately. Pumping will solve the problem.
Also, if you don't stimulate your milk production by breastfeeding or pumping regularly, your milk supply will dwindle until it stops altogether. And, as any research will tell you, formula is just a very poor substitute for breast milk for several reasons.

If I have to be a human and I opt out of being a thicc woman... then I will look like myself otherwise whats the point? Immersion? I can have it without looking like my character. I think people who constantly make themselves in games probably have some issues that they need to work out. Maybe depression. Maybe need to feel that they are important or something else...
Or you have those people who complain that they want to play as their skin color because a lot of games don't have many "black" skins. I am hispanic I don't see too many games with a lot of hispanic "skins" outside of very regionally places games where "hispanic" is the primary demographic.

14:50 it's very simple ... The breast produces milk depending on how much The baby demands. So if a baby sucks a Lot , The breast produces a Lot, if The baby drinks a little The breast produces less.
So The baby should be on The breast every 2 or 3 hours ,
So The hours The Mom is at work, if she doesnt milk them , The breast is gonna think The baby doesnt need that many, so it produces less.
Basically , if we didnt have fórmula or technology, milk production would be a matter of life and death.
One day on not freeing The baby can very well dry The Mom.
So it's like a machine... If You stop for a while , it begins to slow down.
It's consistancy, You can't interrupt it or You Will spend a couple of days bringing it back up.
So what working women do is, they keep pumping on schedule, and freeze or store Their milk.. so when she is at work , someone is bottle feeding it to her baby at The house.
Tl:dr milk production is bases off demand. Women have to pump at work, because it would lower significantly milk production, enought to stop production altogether. It's a machine that uses demand to produce .. The breast expect to be sucked every 2 hours or so. If You are at work, The breast thinks The baby doesnt need it.
Ps.. My baby momma's we're lazy fucks, i used to Hold The pump every night while they sleept, both of them did The same for All 4 kids.
The breast never produced more than an ounce at a time, because they just didnt Care pump or wake up to feed baby. Yeah i learned All about breastfeeding because All My babys didnt tolerate fórmula and The lazy assholes of Mom skipped everything breast related.
One of Them literaly tasked me to Hold The pump every night 2 or 3 times a night.
Never got any of them to produce to baby feed. All My kids sadly had to endure Bad tummy aches All of Their baby lives. I used to have horrible FIGHTS because of this, i used to not understand and wish that i was The one with breast so i could feed them, i wouldnt have missed a single pump.
So tl,:dr mothers cannot stop pumping or Their milk production lowers very very low that in The natural world The baby would die.
Please if You are a woman, don't do this to your husbands, breastfeed your baby, please it's your job, not his.

22:42 I'm a white guy and I usually make my characters a black female if I can, because I like it when my characters are as different than me as possible. This entire idea that we need characters to look like us is absurd. I love Moana and Encanto, and they don't have any white people in it. I love Beauty and the Beast and it's all white people.
Saying that people enjoy playing their gender/race more than another in videos games may be true, I'll give you that. In your example of 1000 people surveyed I wouldn't be surprised if more people answered they prefer characters that look like them in real life.
But this is different from the original premise you made where we should be creating characters that reflect us in real life. Just because people might subconsciously pick a character that represents themselves does not mean that people who decide to are doing so just because.

I have to say I disagree with asmon saying absolutely 100% without a doubt people pick characters who look like them and if you disagree you're ideological and banned.
There's the aforementioned fact that people don't always pick human characters. It doesn't outright disprove your point granted, as you mentioned you're talking about only when people pick human characters, but it does show that people don't always pick whatever they think looks similar to themselves in the broader sense. Some people just want to be an orc or a dragon. Similarly there's the point on gender, there's a very large portion of male players that play as female players simply because they like the eye candy. I know more male players who are playing female characters than female characters playing female characters, and it's a very common meme in the MMO community, so it's clearly apparent that "similarity" is not the only deciding factor here.
FInally onto the topic of race, this is where there's at least a debate to be had, but it's not as 100% obvious fact black and white as you make it out. Me personally, I wouldn't be *surprised* if what you were saying is the case as I personally do pick characters that are at least tangentially similar to my race (I'm asian so I usually pick asian/white characters), but there isn't really much to back up the claim (at least from what I could see I couldn't find any studies on it), so to state it is just a black and white fact and anyone who thinks otherwise is just dumb/wrong is a very disingenuous claim to make as we simply don't know if that is the case.

I have problems with historical incorrect representations of a Middle Age settings as an example, playing in a pseudo historic setting in the Slavic region (Witcher TV show and even worse The Wheel of Time TV show) and have disappropriate numbers of PoC characters. It breaks the immersion. Period. The Wheel of Time goes so far, that the main protagonists, who all grew up in a little village up in the north, are Indian, Aborigine and other races. Like in such an isolated town, after all that time (they live there for hundreds of years) not all would look the same. Things like that drive me nuts.
And i hate that nowadays in the first hour playing the game, there has to be characters, that must tell for no reason that they are gay. Like as if we could not find that out by our self later in the game, maybe let them find their love in an RPG. But no, we have to have a mile high sign written "SHE IS GAY SHE LOVES WOMAN." What? My guild leader is literally a Canadian Native American and Highmountain Tauren are one of her favorite races and her main. It is understandable why she would relate to that despite not looking at all alike. They just make their character to their appeal, whatever they think looks cool, or to their backstory like you said. If they're from the far north then they'll of course be white, if they're from the desert then they'll be black or tanned.
The fact that Asmongold disregarded anyone who doesn't play human characters immediately disproves the whole point of his argument. The argument stems from people wanting to play characters that vaguely represent them and to say that his argument isn't about that is intellectually dishonest. If they're not playing human characters, then they clearly don't care that their character represents them which takes down his argument.
Even if we just take people who play human characters, given how well known it is that a lot of guys play female characters, and a lot of girls play male characters for that matter, I'd say that alone amounts to at least 20% of people who play human characters.
What I also dislike about his argument is that he said that he *thinks* that most people play as characters the same gender they are, even saying that it was a guess, and that he wasn't sure about it, then calls someone stupid for saying that they think more people play characters the opposite gender to them and that it's "common sense" even though he said himself that he wasn't sure.
I generally agree with a lot of what Asmongold says but man was he off the rails this time.
I think if he gave a more reasonable percent like 50-60% I don't think as many people would have really argued about it, but 80% is a hell of an assumption.

And I don't think people with a bad self image would make a character intentionally representing themselves.
