sad part is that's exactly what happened, result is a half baked scrapped PvE and an abandoned original for 2.5 years that was kept alive through the sheer dedication of the playerbase who will be ignored and unwanted in the "sequel" in order to get a Casual fanbase, i am a casual myself but i respect dedication the OW1 community is on the same level as the Titanfall2 community and TF2 community when it comes to respect

It's hard to feel disappointment without a sense of surprise or some other negative emotion from an expectation not being met. Even if PvE content did come out I wasn't expecting anything special out of modern day Blizzard. If it came out and it was good then i would have been genuinely surprised. EA deciding to scrap content they promised and that the player wants because pve focused content doesn't make as much money as pay 2 win mobile content isn't a surprise it's just business as usual. I can't call myself disappointed because given the studio we are talking about this situation does meet my exact expectations but I can still say I'm disgusted I was right.

The irony of the live service model when handled by companies like Blizzard is that if they focused on quality and fun, they'd get players who'd be willing to buy stuff.
Instead they focused on money making schemes which is ultimately driving players away.
I suspect the execs know this, though. Theyre not interested in long term profits. Just in being a fly-by-night game company now. Hype people up, take em for their cash and ad revenue, then bounce. So what if the current execs get replaced? They got theirs, and the players are suckers for falling for it.

I definitely disagree with Asmon’s take on the raised skins prices “not really being an issue”. Plus saying “I just care about the content” is hilarious because 75% of the content in OW1/2 is skins and other cosmetics, so Asmon is basically saying, “I only care for content, except for the most numerous and cared about by the fans part of the content”. If we go by Asmon’s definition of content, we haven’t gotten new content since after OW2’s launch, and before that we hadn’t gotten new content since Baptiste, because Blizzard’s only forum of “regularly updating” OW1/2 was adding new cosmetics, mostly during seasonal events or pre and post OWL tournaments, with minor sprinkles of balancing updates that usually that place during or around the time of some seasonal events that fix an actual issue many asked for, a new balance only the pros asked for that mostly everyone else disagreed with, and some special 2 or maybe 3 changes that literally no one asked for that either make a random hero now more OP or trashier.
Pre price skyrocket, skins were atleast 43.82% of the fun and motivation/drive to play and improve in OW (totally trust those figures without question). The grind didn’t feel as grindy when it was for a cool skin that like changed the hero’s ultimate voice line or something that you wanted and was realistically obtainable but you didn’t have the credits for (back then when the skin purchasing system wasn’t buyable and only by RNG through getting credits for duplications of owned cosmetics or rewards directly from a loot box themselves, usually rewarding extra credits then if you just got a duplicate). If you wanted that skin, you either: worked for it by playing the game (which wasn’t really that hard, you could get 6-8 boxes in around in couple of hours through the arcade every week by winning 9 arcade games). Which weren’t very hard but still if you lost you still got tons of exp to level up for a like 8 minute game, and back then leveling up gave you a free loot box each time, and it took 4-5 games to level up for most people, except those with like gold border portraits, they had to work a bit harder to level up) which if you didn’t get want you wanted you just rest or something and try again later or double down if the skin wasn’t continuously available and pray you make it in time or wait till the anniversary event so you can get it later. Or you bought the loot boxes, reducing your balance while reducing the amount of time you have to play to get the loot but it still didn’t guarantee you’d get what you specifically wanted, so you hope the boxes gave you enough credits to buy whatever you wanted in the first place or hope the box itself gave you the skin. And if it didn’t you either spend more money, mald and ragequit to desktop, or just go to option A. You could easily get plenty of skins in OW or Fortnite by just playing the game semi-frequently, you didn’t get any skins because you rarely play them. Same way you don’t get fast food for just being able to order it but not, you won’t get food without ordering it, vice versa you won’t get skins without playing.
Also a sidenote (a long one at that, so scroll down only if you wish to see a wall of text with no Tl;dr at the end), but getting skins in Fortnite without paying is not difficult, as someone who played in 2017 and dropped it after a few weeks and came back just recently out of curiosity I’d actually say you’d have to try harder to do it unintentionally, you just have to play the game semi-consistently to get them. One of my boomer parents whose been a gamer they’re whole life picked it up one day around 2020, and now plays it as their primary time waster and used “it’s free” as a reason for why they play so much. I came over one day and noticed they had tons of legendary skins from crossovers and from the base game, I saw they had a Geralt of Rivera skin and said I didn’t know they were a Witcher fan, they said they never heard of it, so I asked why they’d spend money on it then and especially since it’s free game and they looked at me confused and said they never spend money on anything. They just got them from just doing some challenges and it appeared in their inventory and showed me some stuff, and yea, you just need to do some challenges and you can get legendary skins pretty easily, you just need to be around when the challenges or crossovers pop up and you can get some nifty shit without paying a cent. This is why Fortnite has such a high player base and retention rate, not just because “kid dumb, kid play gam made for baby”, it’s because it’s updates regularly, like ACTUALLY regularly, not OW regularly where you get patches or the same recycled event from 2016-17 with some 6 new seasonally locked skins every 2-2.5 months, I mean time between updates is 4 weeks maximum, and when it takes that long it usually brings big difference like the map changes, storyline developments (oh yea, Fortnite managed to all that while Blizzard just can’t manage to while pooling most of it’s resources into a story mode) or changes in available weaponry. Making the game constantly refreshing and replayable to new or returning players. Epic’s been able to do this since Fortnite’s BR release essentially, when they were still a fairly small indie dev, Blizzard hasn’t been able to this as a major AAA company. Not a very good look.

You know, the irony of all of this is that I don't think they ever gave a shit about OW2 in the first place. Even when they announced it, I felt like it was just a marketing push to distact from the PR scandals they were under at the time (Blitzchung, the toxic workplace, and a societal crackdown on lootboxes), kind of what they just did here.
"Hey, we canceled OW2's entire point for existing and aren't sorry, but look at all the new content in our roadmap" sounds a lot like what they did at Blizzcon years ago of "Hey, we're gonna put a vague announcement at the start about how we're sorry and then immediately tease Diablo 4 and OW2 to district you from what we did and how hollow our apology was."
It tracks. Put up a big announcement to save some face, delay a couple years worth of updates and characters, then "give up" trying to make something new and just land right back where they started with a new storefront and pricing model that's somehow even more predatory.

What made blizzard great was their risk-taking and investment in player delight, first and foremost.

Donno how many remember that but Overwatch 1 was put together from the scraps of a failed/cancelled MMO that Blizzard was working on. Before it launched, they said it would include PVE and PVP content. And it made sense - they could reuse some quests/zones from that MMO that were finished and make them into PVE content for the new game. Except, when OW1 launched, PVE was nowhere to be seen and it was "coming later".
The only reason I followed the news and withheld from buying the game was because of that missing PVE content. After Killing Floor 2 (which I played for embarassingly long hours), it looked promising to play a Blizzard game that is similar and I liked the cartoony style. But that content never came, they kept delaying it and eventually started the whole OW tournament shenanigans and I knew it was never coming. So I never bought the game.
OW2 was announced and despite being a blatant copy of OW1, it still excited me because now PVE was back on the menu. Then I heard it was delayed and a whole lot of OHNOEs started coming together with the strong sense of deja vu.... yet again. Now that it seems it is cancelled, yet again, all hope in Blizzard is gone and I don't give a F if they even make OW3 with it. It's been what, SEVEN YEARS, and there is still no trace of that PVE content that I wanted. FU Blizzard, for the N-th time.

It ended up worse than we all thought. They added the PvE missions, but only if you spend $5 more on the battle pass. The reason why Overwatch 2 came out was because of the League. They needed to support the league with major updates and changes that weren't coming until Overwatch 2 came out. So, they released the game early to continue supporting the League so they could make money on it.
Now, here's the reason crux of the problem. Overwatch League is dying. Now that China has pulled out of Western Delovoped games; all the Chinese Leagues have been disbanded. Over League managers are also pulling out because they lost tons of money on this League. So, the reason for pushing the game out early backfired, and now we are left with a game that's now very good, with its PvE content piece mealed into the battle pass nobody wanted, just to get crappy cosmetics no one really wants.
Like you; I said everything was going to be fine, they just pushed out the game early to support the Overwatch League. But after this, and the announcement that the Story content would be added to the battle pass, I was done. I uninstalled the game and haven't been back since. That was just after the Diablo 4 beta. I don't even support my OWL team anymore. I totally washed my hands of Blizzard as a company and refused to give them any more of my money. I bought Diablo 4 second-hand just to see how the game played, but I have not spent any money on it. In fact; I don't even play anymore. I have way too many good games that I want to spend my time in.
