yep. that's why it doesn't matter if "all" that the woke propaganda in a film is is a female character or a black character - if the reason for that female or black or whatever character's inclusion is purely based on ideology? the audience knows it, and feels it.

They want to replace Luke with her. To give his role to her.
It would be okay if she was his successor, if Luke established the New Jedi Order, and she succeeded him as the leader or something, but him failing and her establishing the New Jedi order is an insult. I certainly won't be watching any of their movies as long as Rey the usurper remains. The only way to redeem themselves is to have Luke's New Jedi Order survive and be rediscovered by Rey.

Yup. Also it's funny when feminists try to create a "Strong Female Character" by making all the male characters worse at the female in like every aspect. By making the male characters worse, you're basically saying that men have to be terrible in order for women to be better than them. Which goes completely against the original idea behind feminism lol. The best shows with strong female character DO NOT basically "nerf" the male characters in order for the female characters to look good.

Exactly that. Reminds me of Stan Lee making comments about Iron Man, that half the reason he was made to be a multi-billionaire was because the audience hated billionaires in general in reality, or they were always used as villains, and thus they were challenging themselves to make a character people liked in that kind of setting. The other half of the reason was to have a logical reason he could financially back the actual creation of his armor and gadgets.
So then when Riri was introduced as Ironheart, it's pretty obvious the writer(s) involved gave her the background she had, being broke and growing up in a bad neighborhood, was to push their irrational belief that she was in the right for basically stealing Tony's legacy.

The diversity can't just be on screen.
Y'know a lot of people were angry that Jon Casdan got writing credits with Lucas Film, people said it's peak Nepotism
      Which is it
But I watched Willow and Jon actually managed to write diverse characters well. Larry Casdan though, I don't think he can.
Hollywood has many people with Talent who are diverse. Disney often has a checklist and they hire one to make "their" movie as opposed to hire a talent to make a movie.
They're notoriously rigid, and you have to have serious good will with them in order to "be allowed" to step out of their comfort zone.
WB, while looks like a total trainwreck (lol!) definitely treat their hired talent like adults. There's more creative freedom given... But of course that comes at a price. Not every movie makes a gazillion dollars...

My husband and I struggled with Castlevania: Nocturne for numerous reasons, but ultimately gave up on it because of Annette. Her backstory was compelling, but she was COMPLETELY changed from how she is in the games, originally being a pale-skinned blonde girl with a very different origin story. The show changed her race, origin, personality, and storyline - only keeping her name. They should have just renamed her and made her a completely new character. Yes, Isaac had been changed from the source material in the original show, but he was also significantly less annoying, his introduction and story well paced. We learned everything we needed to know about Annette in a single episode dedicated solely to her being sad and monologuing about a dead guy who never mattered in the first place.

I do have a sneaking suspicion that she took the Skywalker name because she was pregnant.
Watch the scene of Ben resurrecting her. He places his hand on her stomach and when she revives the first thing she does is put her hand over his on her belly. She does this before raising her head or opening her eyes to look at him. And moments earlier Ben had been cradling her body in his hands in a way that he could easily have revived her by touching hsr face while holding her: he has to specifically let her slip back down to touch her stomach.
And the loving couple touching the woman's pregnant belly is such a well.worn image now that it's become.visual shorthand.
The implication of that and taking the Skywalker name is that she is continuing the Skywalker bloodline through Ben's offspring.

Just a few recent examples include The Witcher, Halo, Velma, Star Wars, Marvel, and Rings of Power. Writers should be held accountable when they take a crap upon existing worlds and have the arrogance to think their story is better. Then the audience is blamed when the show or movie does terrible and has negative reviews.

So they rely on going after established IP's that already have a built in long term support base and hijacking them to spread "the message" more effectively. They need constant validation because they know what they're advocating isn't as widely embraced as they like to believe it is. Social justice is only really embraced at an elite corporate level, not a grounded level.

I think the difference between what guys like Ditko and Kirby did with Spider-Man and The Thing and what modern writers do is that they would base the characters on their actual selfs and experiences but would treat the characters as a son. Modern writers write like it’s a revenge fantasy starting off explaining why the world is wrong and hates them and by the end they have powers because they are them and they needed to do to be happy show how they were the best all along. But instead they take existing properties, with fanbases large and small (but almost always equally impassioned) and subvert/insert those characters there to almost always disastrous results. Most popular IPs from the 80s on have, in this last 10 years or so, have been subjected to this and have nowhere near the clout they once did. The "climax" of almost all these girl boss movies is the main character realizing she was awesome the whole time. Her only obstacles were the constraints unfairly placed upon her by society. The universe then bends around her will and desires, seemingly out of nowhere and for no other reason than she's so self-evidently amazing. The only thing she learned was to believe in herself. It DOES have to do with being woke though. There's a literal checklist that Disney uses to produce these "strong, female characters" and it includes removing literally every aspect of what makes a character compelling, along with several other diversity and feminist pillars: there _has_ to (even at the expense of the talent and quality of the production) an even distribution of racial and gender-based characters (except for white people; there can be little to none of those), majority of men in the female-led movies are depicted as wholly incompetent, evil, and/or inept, the female characters cannot be saved by men, they can't have learned anything or have anything explained or mansplained to them (which is so sexist it's laughable), female characters cannot have any perceived weaknesses or significant struggles, it's perfectly acceptable and even encouraged for female characters to demean or diminish their male counterparts for the sake of propping up the female characters, female characters must be stoic, strong and essentially adopt all the "toxic" masculine characteristics they're absolutely against depicting in men, love and motherhood is seen as "weak" and unimportant compared to being a leader and business/political-related accomplishments, etc.
Go through anything female-led produced in the last 5+ years, especially from Disney: you'll not have to look hard to find these attributes. And it doesn't need to be that way in order to have great, "strong" female characters. As you pointed out, Ellen Ripley from Aliens, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Trinity from Matrix, Sarah Connor from Terminator, Zeo and River from Firefly, and even Catniss from Hunger Games: all of them strong, all of them with weakness or struggle to overcome, all of them embrace the concept of love and family, etc. You'll practically never find that in modern movies especially from the likes of Disney. That's seen as weak, unimportant and "outdated". It's ridiculous. Clearly evident more than ever by the likes of Rachel Zegler in her Snow White interviews: THAT'S the real motivation and philosophy behind many studios like Disney now. They're selling a message, not relatable and timeless stories. It's going to be the subject of their own demise, and they absolutely deserve it.

And that reply makes me think you never actually went through Starkillers story, as it was miles better than Rey's. Adding to Fardfox, he was only able to pull off the crazy shit he did because of that training with Vader and his best friend PROXY programmed to try to kill him on a regular basis, the latter you see come up a lot in game. PROXY has been doing that for many, many years. And despite that power, he still couldn't beat Palpatine in either the good or bad endings. He sacrificed himself to let the other founders of the rebellion escape and start the alliance, which is a way more interesting founding of the rebellion than in disney canon.

They sweep into a community, call everyone evil racist transphobes that hate women, and then force the show/game/comic series to fit their world view while reviling everyone that actually likes it. The reason that the woke mentality forces bad writing is because of the rules of it. For example you cannot show a woman as weak or in distress because thats bad. But those things are also an endemic part of the heroes journey. Wokeness holds back important aspects to storytelling and drama by design, making bad writing a feature not a bug in wokeness. It applies artifical rules that hold back writers and the creative process. Rather than focusing on what makes a compelling story the concern is about toeing the line of rapidly changing rules that have nothing to do with actually writing a good story.

If it is supposed to be a white character that got race swapped to black for diversity quotas, then it's woke. If it is a European historical figure that got race swapped to black, that is hyper woke. Erasing Europeans from our own history to give black people representation where they are not entitled to representation is woke. Interracial romances are woke. When producers want to promote interracial relationships by giving a white female character a black husband or black boyfriend, that is woke, since that is aimed at promoting race mixing to young white women to try and get rid of the white race.

When characters are gay and it plays into the story - that's fine. IMO, in the cartoon Kipo, the MC develops a crush on a guy she's adventuring with, and he explains that he is gay, which kills off any unnecessary romance and leaves the characters as friends.
Otherwise, just throwing in the fact that an MC is gay without it making any difference to the story or character development is terrible writing. It's like describing a character and saying "he had a dog throughout his childhood and teenage years". Ok, how does it affect the character? Is he now an animal lover and will prioritize saving animals over humans, for example? No? Then there's no point in adding that.

I mean this in the sense that characters should never directly *PROJECT* the writers' views but that they should *REFLECT* the writers' views for instance within Amazon's TV show, 'The Boys' where the writers' views are clearly left leaning but this doesn't impact the characters or the story in any way that made the series bad (At least season 1 - 3 I haven't watched season 4 yet) as it is a satirical take on American politics and attitudes. Just look at Velma as an example, nowhere near enough people were buying what was being sold to justify more of it being created, but more of it is being made and Mindi is getting more work despite the massive flop because it supports the message and destroys more of what the people they despise love, not because people are buying it.
Edit around 33 minutes in: Jesus dude, people have been repeatedly *not* buying these things, not supporting them, not rewarding their creation whenever possible and they still get made. It's not hard to not watch something, it's much harder to speak louder, even with their wallets, than the people who are in the next office over from the executives that make the funding choices and can talk directly into their ears.

I think the main problem is that these sorts of characters do not have any character at all. At some point, these writers graduated from their woke universities and decided that sexuality, race, and gender are personalities. They can not write anything that is good or original on their own so they jump from source material to source material to use it as a political platform. It is what they have been told to do in schools for a long time now, why are we even acting surprised. It is literally just about 'pushing the message' or ''making a statement' or any other crap like that... professors literally use those phrases.
Then there are the big companies that do not really care, they just don't want to get canceled so they tolerate it. People like to feel and appear righteous, though only when there is no danger to themselves. That is why political issues are so popular today. What did Disney do with the black guy from the poster, when it came to selling tickets in China? Yep, they removed him. That same mentality has seeped into modern writing. I also think the lack of proper villains for these characters is also a problem. Villains that act as a counterbalance to the characters. Like Batman v Joker, Sonic v Eggman Robotnik, Spider-Man v Goblin/DocOck/Venom, etc.

I feel like a lot of people don't like "woke" characters because usually they don't fit the story or they don't build up the characters to fit their ideal. But most of the time I feel like they are shoehorned in, they don't matter, and many times they can be annoying because they may not respect other people within the story we care about OR the story when focusing on them don't respect the characters that we have learned to love previously.

Nobody walked in and hated Rey bc it was Rey. We started to hate her bc shit always seemed to work put for her and she managed to do...impressive feats...to say the least with nor training of any kind. She just...did it. Only good part in all 3 of those films was the 2nd one when she was trying to "feel the force" and luke smacjed her hand with a branch. And thats just bc it got me way offguard lol. Oh, and the hyperspace suicide sword...that was cool and totally unexpected. Not to mention the whole idea of the 3 movies where "it doesnt matter where you came from, its where your going" and yet Rey denies her heritage and says shes a skywalker. Itd have been WAY cooler, if she walked as a proud Palpatine

LMAO OMFG Hyperspace suicide sword what a great way to describe that shit XD HAAHHAA and yea i entirely agree here she was stronger and more skilled with the force than ANAKIN the chosen one ever was despite him supposedly being trained at the jedi Temple on coruscant by one of the best knight in the jedi order the fact that she didnt have to do anything in order to tap into the force is bullshit when literally no other jedi has ever done that shit its only after intense meditation and training that they achieve those abilties but Rey for some silly reason could just do whatever whenever she felt like it ..... Ships flying away she grabs it with the force something no one but StarKiller has done and his was fully explained and fleshed out as to why he could do it and we loved that shit but no they legit just gave her the ability to literally whatever it was she needed to to move the plot along with ZERO explanation as to why other that ......... she the emperors daughter which still doesnt make any fucking sense cause the sith still have to have training to be able to master the darkside of the force they dont just spontaneously get powers out of nowhere

People who disagree that woke is bad story telling always disingenuously claim that's the arguement because they can actually refute that. Basically instead of addressing the arguement you create your own and say see I'm right.

Asmongold advice: "Stop consumming content you do not like." We would not. Unfortunately, they give us what we want at first then transform it later into something else entirely. That is the problem. If they were clear about what they would do, be honnest, we might actually like and give a chance and not be outraged. They should create their own characters and write them good! We will be happy. But they should leave established characters as they have been known and liked.

I think the problem with "anyone can be the Mandalorian" is that, at least for me personally, they did take the time to prepare us for our main character to be sidelined. I really like Bo Katan and her story in Season 3 but the problem is that it would've served better in her own show or with proper build up this season for her story to be the dominant one in season 4

    • @NameIsDoc
      @NameIsDoc Год назад +13

Exactly if the story was gradually ending with Bo slowly taking up more and more until the duo can retire it would have been a nice handoff. Some people will leave because they like the original characters but it wouldn't give the audience whiplash.
Passing the torch is a DIFFICULT process in media yet not impossible look at JOJO where each chapter is a new character who both respects the past and builds off of it in their own unique way. Even when another past character is dragged through the mud in the manga...IT 100% fits his character and works naratively even as it was a character's decision that they knew was flawed and came from a flawed place.

Unfortunatley the "Anyone can be the X" though process seems to be used as an excuse to replace characters with a creators new pet project. I think these same people saying that now would be horrified if the next creator came along and did to their character what they've done to the one before them.

@@Doddzer74 yeah if Bo gets replaced by a white guy they'd flip out this isn't because they like the idea of a mantel being passed on. Its because they want to have the feeling that they took a cultural touchstone away from people

And that's the problem. Star Wars has done what marvel has done, where they are now setting things up in different shows. For example you had to watch Book Of Boba Fett to understand the the start of season 3 of Mando. It completely sidelined Boba Fett and derailed the show. Now with Mandalorian.
Just give us a Bo Katan show and call it good, there is plenty to work off her character.

It's kind of hard to say "if you don't like something, don't consume it". Cause you basically have to consume something in order to know whether you would like it or not. Generally what happens is you don't watch the next thing of the same creator but it's potentially bad because you could just watch something that was bad, not watch the next thing which was better and then watch a third thing that is bad because you heard the second one was good. Meanwhile the creator sees you watched first and third who were the worst.
Especially in movies, not so much in video games that have replayability ofc. That's why you kind of have to get reactions, discussions about things (even tho it becomes a twitter shitshow I suppose) and not just "checking if product was consumed".

I believe my first experience with woke character was in Fahrenheit. The cop girl, Carla, had a gay neighbour who was a literal cardboard of a character who crushed any of your potential sympathies by bringing the pack of tarot cards into your investigation work.
Game could literally throw him away for no value lost. He was a first for me, but definitely not the last.

The whole reason why self inserts are seen as a bad thing is because almost every time the reason why the writer put exactly themselves into the story is because they weren't good enough to make a decent character and so that reflects on how the story may turn out

  • @shiniesglitters5424

The issue I have with the "woke" stuff is a lot of shitty writers are using the LGBTQ & Minority community as an excuse to write shitty characters. The race or gender identity of said characters is then used as a shield against proper criticism of said shitty character(s).

  • @Gronnrag
    @Gronnrag 10 месяцев назад +20

Some of my favorite piece of litterature I've read were self-inserts, the kind where the author is literally isekaied. The authors were just very aware of themselves, their flaws, their strengths... So essentially they're just another character with the plot point of being completely out of their element. And as someone who loves reading about cultures clash, "fish out of water" scenario, and outside context problems, those kind of self-insert are basically the only place I can consistently read what I like.
The overwhelming majority of self-insert are still shit though, but Disney and their pals can't argue that they can't afford someone who knows what they're doing. They just don't care : make movie, name it "Star Wars", and make profit is what they thought, and it turns out they were right.
