Let me tell you of a little known phenomena in the tech industry. There are companies like this that literally operate on hype, generate investor money, and then fade into the night. I used to love working for these kinds of companies because a) They pay above the median and b) nobody really knows what they are doing or gives a fuck. A lot of promises are made even though they are impossible to deliver, but only us devs really know that. Investors, even those who apparently "Specialise in Tech" don't know shit about tech really. They have just had some success with Tech investments and now they think they are an expert. So basically the whole company is a ruse to run on investor money knowing full-well that it will never be a going concern. I even worked for companies where they actually were pretty open about this. I was told "Get out of this company what you can in terms of experience because we won't be here for the long haul". Another company allowed me to create my own job title.
Clearly what they are doing is working. They have generated buzz with a fake mockup. This will translate into investor money, even with all the negativity as long as they spin it as gamer's unwilling to embrace the future, and whether they can paint themselves as the Elon musk's of gaming.

I've made a similar expirience 22 years ago. I've worked with an internet and telcom provider at that time. They've used a "new" technology for the delivery of their services to the customers. In matter fact they just wasted the investors money on senseless projects and too much employees. When I understood that the company is only going to be successfull as a scam, I left. Three month later the company was broke. Because after the internet bubble broke, the investors refused to spend more money into this venture.

Sure theres a lotta stupid gamers, but most importantly, there’s a lotta extremely stupid gamers who are putting our pass-time in danger and they should be shamed to the end of it all. When “people” call you toxic for having standards and trying to prevent a darker future of gaming, just stomp on their argument with both legendary boots. I've been in IT for over 15 years. The average consumer won't buy something if they don't understand it. You can convince parents to get onboard with trending things if you can convince them it's a toy. That's about it. You can't convince someone they need something until something they enjoy/use daily is broken. Natural upgrades to staples also make sense to the average Joe. My Dad didn't want a smartphone until he seen all his old friends were on FB. Now he posts cat pictures and completed color by numbers. NFTs and Web3 is a downgrade to already established systems and hardware. You'd be hard pressed to get anyone but edgey 20-somethings and teens, but even that is harder, because the average attention span is getting much worse.

One remark on why people do this: it's not just because they want a get rich quick scheme. It's because they feel that hard work no longer doesn't get them anywhere anymore, where well above average jobs still won't let them own a decent house in the city they work in, it's because they feel they need to win a lottery because the only people getting ahead are the ones either with rich parents, or those who won on of those investment lotteries. Working hard no longer gets you anywhere, and that's a shame on its own and probably the real key to this issue. People are desperate.

And I have always said that schools need to stop selling students a dream that they cannot achieve but instead nurture their talents to be the best at what they can be.

Well, i think we will always have indie games, the good part of gaming is that, in theory you don't need a big budget and a massive team like in a movie or series, just a person, a computer and an idea.
I'm not saying that making games are easier, but the tools to make it possible to do one, are much more easier to obtain than in other medias.
More easier than that would be just writing a book.

    • @thepurplepanda4

If you want an indie game that can do anything more than scraps in 5 years, you need a team and the budget starts at 80k a year.
The issue with software is the people you hire are your product, and they are expensive.
Artists however, are cheap. Most feel like they shouldnt be paid, so are easily exploited into min wage.

6:30 Those consoles look like a 3D printed enclosure for a Raspberry Pi 4. $35 for the computer, the enclosures will probably cost like $20,000 for the forming dies and 3 cents for the plastic. It might actually cost more for the shipping than for the console. All the computations are done on a server and the Raspberry Pi acts as a plug for your keyboard, mouse and TV. Built-in WiFi isn't affected by a plastic enclosure.
I predict the first 3 or 4 versions will all have issues related to thermal management. For example: No ventilation. No attention to airflow. Thermal sensors broken by a bios update that allows the components to overheat themselves until the solder holding the chips on the board melt. Bottom mounted heat sinks that burn the shelf it sits on(and also not work very well). No thermal paste/pads. Flammable plastic used for the enclosure. Some of these things specifically, other others (unspecified) will make the product not viable on it's own. Ultimately, it will come down to the content.
