I think you just talked me out of buying the Canon 2.8 16-35 and talked me into buying the Tamron, though I do like that you can put a filter on the canon to protect the glass where as with the Tamron you cannot, thanks for an informative well set out review
I have Canon 7D, and need a zoom to cover 24 range. I have 10-18, 24mm pancake, Tamron 45mm prime, 70 200 F4 IS L and Tamron 90mm Macro. I mostly shoot landscape, but want to get into autosport and rally too. Also I later plan to add used 5D mk2 to use along my 7D. Would 16 35 F4 be the right choice, in case I happen to shoot fast cars in the middle of shady forest stages? Could 2.8 be worth that 1 stop?
Dustin, I love your reviews!!!! I wish I could narrate a subject as well as you. In my case I'd have to either memorize or read directly from a script ha ha.Truly another great review by you!
Is there a written review of this lens on your website, Mr. Abbott? I can't seem to find one. The only reason holding me back from the Tamron (G1) is the fact that I can not justify buying a whole new filter system, which costs almost as much as the lens used. Also, something I noticed in your 'Three way shootout' is that you used a slightly higher shutter speed on the Tamron. Can you recall if it was due to the light changing or is the transmission on the Tamron better? I intend to use this lens for astro. Right now a used 16-35mm f2.8 is available for about 600-650 Euros. I think it's not bad.
The Tamron is much better for astro than this lens. I didn't do a text review of this lens, as its an older lens that I had in more for comparison purposes.
I would personally, yes. The Canon lenses have slightly better AF, but a wide focal length like this isn't very demanding on AF. The Tamron is much sharper, has much less vignette, and adds the image stabilizer. It's also less expensive. The only real downside is that it is fairly big and heavy.
@@DustinAbbottTWI what would be a great lens to buy then i want a good lens for my canon 80d you know a lot of people have their own opinions but i need facts
Is it a good lens to use on my Canon 80d cause i like taking pictures and i want a camera lens that can work good for me. I heard about the 24-70 and the 16-35 and the 70-200 and go from there but i still need you to help me out please
It's still a good lens on APS-C, though the focal length isn't quite as attractive due to your 80D's crop factor (1.6x). It won't be as wide. Something designed for your sensor like the 10-22mm (bhpho.to/3dz9lhz) might be a better choice.
@@DustinAbbottTWI so let me get this right this lens is for a full frame camera and this isn't made for my 80d? So the 10-22 is the same as 16-35 wow i wish i would've known that before my wife bought me this lens lol.
@@DustinAbbottTWI can you tell me what's the difference between evaluative, partial, spot, and centerweighted meeting. +Duy Nguyen I purchased the Tamron 15-30 VC myself and love it. I'm using the Fotodiox Wonderpana filter system with it and it is a killer combination.
Focus is good, and it gathers plenty of light, but I'm still not blown away by the image quality. A new version is arriving in a month...but it will cost...a lot!
You can still produce nice images with it; there’s just a lot of more recent releases that are better lenses. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it, however!

Mr. Abbott I just saw your review and found that towards the end you say that this "lens is not good enough to shoot land scape" but suddenly within seconds you start praising "as a proven performer and a staple for land scape photographers but for photo journalists' thereby a proven performer. What do you want to exactly say and prove ? Please dlucidate.
I don’t think you are using direct quotes there. It has been a well respected lens that has simply been outclasses by a number of newer lenses. My only point is that some people still prefer this lens because it is proven (not because it is any longer better...it isn’t).
Yes I did use direct quote from your commentary. However, please quote those new lenses (maybe from other manufacturers for Canon EOS APC cameras) for the benefit of all of us. Thanks.
Why not showing some samples than talking a lot? Btw it's just a suggestion no hate. Love your review
Thank you .. I really can't wait to see how it performance again the 16-35mm f4 IS and the Tamron 15-30mm f2.
Nice review! I'm considering buying this lens, and value your opinion on gear.
Glad it was helpful!

How good is this lens
Frankly there are a lot of more recent lenses that are better, in my opinion.

Hi Dustin! Thanks for this review, as a event shooter would you still recommend tamron 15-30 over this canon?

Which lens i should buy for video shooting ?
Canon 16-35mm or 24-70mm?
Any help ?
+Jeton Zeqiri Wow - interesting choices. Are you using some kind of stabilizing rig? If not, you should go for the 16-35 f/4L IS instead.
+Dustin Abbott If a stabilizing rig were to be used, would you say this lens would do well enough?
Nicholas Clark
Yes, although be aware that it vignettes pretty heavily and it isn't very sharp in the corners at wide aperture.
Dustin Abbott
Ok, that's good to know, thanks for the help!

I do mainly basketball photography...will this lens be any good, will it be sharp? I’m using the canon 7D
A lot of people have used it for that purpose. I think there are better options now, but it will work.

I don't think so. There are so many better options available now.
