    I never liked her… having only heard the stuff that gets the most radio play. But just recently, whilst working my way through her entire catalog, I’ve learned two things. First, I actually LOVE her. And second, the radio people seem to only play her worst songs. The best of the best require listening beyond the airwaves. But, oooooohhhh, the reward, for so doing! ❤️❤️❤️

      I feel the exact same way. I was one of those people who said that I liked Taylor’s “old” songs, meaning her country and county-pop songs from her first few albums. But I recently have been listening to her entire catalog and I love her more mature stuff. Now I barely want to listen to the first few albums. She’s an amazing artist. My favorite albums are Evermore , Folklore and Lover. I’m still learning about the songs on Midnight - I need to understand them before I can really appreciate them.

      @@MyGrandfathersGranddaughter basically, the thing is that the more you listen to _Midnights_ , the better it gets, because she famously is not "spilling the tea" and is being vague on this album; HOWEVER, she's subtly being multi-layered A F on this, so you keep decoding meanings on the songs. It happens both as she is ruminating on her past relationships and as they compare to the latest to come to an end (Joe). So you keep thinking about the new meanings she is finding on her past AND you keep thinking on why specifically she's revisiting this or yhat one in specific, what in the current ship could've made her think about the other one in the past -- again, she's not being super specific, on this album, about the present, just the past; then everything boils down to the confirmstion that it's over in "Hits Different" and "You're Losing Me".
      It's brilliant. I initially thought it was "good but not amazing", but it's actually brilliant 😮🥰

      I love her music, but to compare her to Shakespeare seems a tad hyperbolic. Shakespeare wasn’t a musician and Taylor’s greatest gift is her sense of melody, IMO, more so than her lyricism. She ranks up there with Elton John and maybe even Paul McCartney in that regard. She’s a great lyricist, but not a once in a millennium talent like ol’ Bill Shakespeare

    I'm an old rock guitar teacher and I recently started paying attention to Taylor. I'm not ready to trade my Beatles records in, but I am experiencing her music in a way that is just as powerful, but in a very different way. She writes from a very personal place and her lyrics without the music show what poetry is about. I'm very excited to find this channel as lots of teachers show how to finger the chords, but understanding how the progressions drive emotion is the real nitty gritty. It makes me cry, but I pick Marjorie as the most powerful song of hers. My Granny was no fun to be around, but Marjorie shows how it could be and when it is good how valuable that is.

    2:55 an additional note is that “lost in your current like a priceless wine” is also a play on words since “currant” is a wine term. I like to think she means she’s swept up (current) AND drunk (currant) on this person, which would have similar feelings of loss of control!

    I've been hoping someone does a musicological study of "Lover". The progression is basic (as it is for most TS songs - that's not an insult, it's just what usually works for pop music), but the way she uses melody is genius, IMO, particularly compared to how she uses melody in most of her other pop hits.

      @SongwriterSanctuary  5 месяцев назад +15

      Honestly in my opinion Taylor doesn’t need all the insane chords changes because when the lyrics tell a story like hers do, you don’t want to be distracted by too many things at once. When you get into a lot of her lead singles, they don’t really have the lyrics that you need to pay attention to, but in Lover’s case the lyrics mean so much that the over-saturation of overproduction or complex chord changes. And that goes for any fantastic lyricist as well

      Yeah that’s insane to even think about 🤯 and I love “Tolerate It”, partially because it’s in 5/4 time… which means it’s grouped into measures of five beats. Incredibly rare for pop music, and she pulls it off. I’ve thought about doing a video on that one too

    I would enthusiastically applaud any and all TSwift content you would like to do (and, yes, I have subscribed ), but there is something of special interest to me. I'm sure you know that there is an endless supply of Taylor-hater comments to be found on various news articles, etc., that involve Taylor and a lot of these comments focus on her supposedly mediocre talent. In most cases it is obvious that these are mere opinions based on ignorance of her discography (BTW, I never hear this claim being made by professional musicians - except for political beefs, e.g., Ted Nugent), but sometimes the haters try to make it sound like they are too sophisticated for Taylor's music. They typically imply that swifties are simpletons and that Taylormania is a sign of the decline of artistry due to the current nature of the music industry.
    What I'm trying to get at is that I would love to find some insightful analysis of her talent as a musician from the perspective of a musician. Is Taylor "selling out" by making catchy music that people love? I don't think so. Is her music so simple that it displays a lack of artistry? I don't think so. But I don't have enough musical background to address these claims in a way that a musician might. Is the "magic" of Taylormania merely marketing, or does she have a type of talent that could impress music lovers for centuries?

    • @SongwriterSanctuary

    • @gaylenwoof
      @gaylenwoof 5 месяцев назад +6

      @@TheMister123 Thanks for pointing toward David Bennet. I watched his video on her “5 favorite chord progressions” and now I have a theory. He points out that TS has taken the concept of re-using certain chord progressions to a whole new level. This is probably obvious to most listeners, but it is not the least bit obvious to me. In fact, for me, chord progressions are invisible to my conscious mind. I understand the concept and I could hear the progressions as he applied them to the songs but, even now, if you play me two songs with the same progression and ask me if they are the same progression, my answer would mostly be a guess.
      My focus is primarily on melody, rhythm, and assorted production qualities. Most swifties are focused on lyrics. My theory is that a scientific study would show that swifties are mostly like me insofar as not paying conscious attention to - or simply not caring about - chord progressions. I can’t get bored with her music or annoyed by the dominant chord progressions because I don’t consciously hear them, as such.
      BTW, this theory might partially explain the “her music is not for me” reaction, but it does not explain the “haters”. The leap to hater requires some extra social/political dimensions. What I do notice, however, is that certain haters draw on this knowledge of her music as a way to assert what they see as their musical sophistication or intellectual superiority when claiming that “she’s overrated”.

    Willow and Lover are my two faves of Taylor's songs and I only just discovered them both in the last few months. I've always liked her and her songs but considered her just someone who writes some cool, catchy tunes. But I currently work with a student who adores her and I wanted to know what she was talking about when she brings up Taylor. So I began a deep dive and my eyes were opened! This woman has such an amazing depth and range! Her song about her grandmother, entitled Marjorie, is also a moving piece which uses her grandmas own recordings in the background (she was an opera singer back in the day). Enjoyed this video!
    There’s SO much Taylor content out there, BUT very little in-depth analysis. I would love something like that! Especially something that could try to approach it from an “objective” standpoint. I know it’s impossible eliminate all subjectivity (especially when it comes to art), but I would love to see someone who really knows music to give it a shot.
    I’d really like to see an analysis of Tolerate It from the album Evermore. I had read that the time signature is a bit unusual time signature, likely making it harder for Swift to write to. I’d like to understand why this particular time signature could be challenging for a writer and if you can spot some things she did to adapt to it.
    I also read (in Wikipedia) that one reviewer thought the song would have fit well on her Folklore album because it had similar musical elements. I’d be interested to know what, specifically, the reviewer meant. In other words, how are the two albums different in terms of “musical elements”?
    If you’d like to do this type of deep dive into Swift’s music from time to time, I think there’s an audience for it! 😊

      Thank you for the thoughtful response!! “Tolerate It” is actually on my list- the 5/4 time signature is SUPER compelling and I’m actually very impressed that she was able to use it so effortlessly. The lyrics are super powerful too so I think it bears an analysis. Keep an eye out!
      I’m glad you feel that way about the in-depth analysis videos! I definitely want to do more. I don’t necessarily want to become the “Taylor Swift guy”- this channel is dedicated to good songwriting across the board, and there’s so much of it- but I also understand that there’s a huge audience of Swifties, and those videos would be in higher demand, so I’m gonna do my best to strike a balance. Stay tuned!

    she often has these clever play on words, like in : You know that my train could take you home
    Anywhere else is hollow. trains are also hollow 😯
    yes, I agree that her lyrics calling back to other songs is intentional, and the fandom goes wild for it.

    Taylor isn't very good at coming up with new themes for songs, although a few exist, but she somehow comes up with unique approaches to the common ones when one would think no one could come up with a new take on love stories and breakup songs.

      @SongwriterSanctuary  5 месяцев назад +4

      We all share the human experience, so it's hard to come up with COMPLETELY novel subjects/themes. But I agree- Taylor's takes on the same old classic human experiences are always fun and innovative

    • @willinguyen1
      @willinguyen1 5 месяцев назад

      The same themes are recycled in all of music. It's all trite. But Taylor has a very fresh take on them, particularly in her excellent and original lyricism.

    • @robertvirnig638
      @robertvirnig638 5 месяцев назад

      @@SongwriterSanctuary I agree that most genres, especially contemporary music limit themselves to some simple themes but the rock music I grew up on in the 70s and 80s tackled a wide range of issues. For instance anything by Metallica as well as Rush and Pink Floyd and many others. Taylor does touch on some varied and important issues such as in "You Need To Calm Down," "The Man," or even the silly "Shake It Off." But these songs make up a small amount of her catalog. I'm a big fan of Taylor and I'm glad that she uses her large platform to put out some songs with important messages.

    Thankyou for making this video about this song. I don't really understand music like I don't understand chess. But I do like watching chess videos because they explain what is really going on in the game so I can understand. Well, that's how I feel about your explanation in this video. I wonder who this guy is? He reminds me of someone who gets shipwrecked on an island and he's always looking out to the horizon trying to find a way out. What he doesn't realize is that he gets shipwrecked exactly where he is supposed to be because that was his destiny all along. And there is nothing out there for him because the island was always meant to be his home. It just took him a while to figure that out. And how he figures it out is that he finds a Genie in a bottle that changes his entire life! And she is the most beautiful Genie you could ever imagine!😀
    Anyway, I wonder who this guy is. Do you remember a long long time ago there was this strange story about Taylor falling in love with some ultra rich guy in Asia? Nothing ever came of that story. But if you look at the timing of that story you'll see that Taylor's music changed after that starting with the Lover Album.
    Anyway, if this guy is a real guy what her music is telling us is that she has fallen for him with her whole heart. And I got a feeling that this guy feels the same way too.😀
    Anyway, thanks again and I found it very interesting cuz there was a lot of stuff in this song I never understood before but after you explained it I realize it really is a masterpiece!😀💖🎆🌋👑

    Aaron wrote the music… unlike her work with Jack, Taylor writes to track with Aaron and I think when she does that, it brings something special out of her. She said in her Long Pond Studio explanations that often his music gives her feelings and that then inspires her to write based on those feelings. Unlike her coming up with the song and then she and Jack fiddling with it, either as co-writers or just as a producer. Both Taylor and Ed Sheeran became super prolific working with him and just couldn’t stop making music… love that about him.
