This is a mouth agape revelation. The Doctor Gal doing the testicle readings was soooo funny. This is great but I cannot fathom why I had not heard about this before. I had a vehicle like one of these years ago named "Thunder Dome" and was a beetle body on a jeep wagoneer chassis with a trailer chain locker for the rear deck and a rollup door panel over the engine for rain cover. Front fenders made out of more rollup door panels. Only glass was a windshield and it was licensed for the road.......that was in 1989. We used it for nighttime roadwarrior chases on a dry lake near Reno during a full Moon with other strange vehicles. Armed with water balloons and fireworks. Too much fun for anyone then.
As fate would have it, I sold her to a fellow in Susanville, CA who had bought property that had a 1949 Willys Station Wagon sitting on four stumps with no running gear. No doubt "Thunder Dome's" body was scrapped. @@theartmannchannel
While it's had it's changed over the past 10 years, and many hard-liners have fallen by the wayside or have opened up smaller satellite events, Wasteland is still "Wasteland". There are so many different tribes to find and spend your time with that it's very easy to find one that fits your own vibe. It's not too big that it carries itself away and not too small that you can't find a place where you feel comfortable - it's the perfect size. Granted you might get some "elders" who started at the beginning who will tell you that it's not the same, etc. (and by all means, many of them are right), that doesn't mean you'd even notice. It's more related to how the event was experienced in the beginning compared to what it is now. The reasons they joined or appreciated it may not be present anymore. But for a newcomer, it won't matter whatsoever. If what you see entices you then you absolutely need to go, you won't regret it. The only regret you'll have is if you DON'T go :)
'Wasteland' weekend looks like a lot of fun. The artistic creations of the 'Mad Max' cars, trucks and shelters are excellent. Really gives the atmosphere of 'Mad Max'.
I implore to anyone who has seen Wasteland online to ABSOLUTELY attend one! There has never been anything like it. Granted it's swelled up and changed a lot over the past several years (I started in 2013) but the event itself and especially the people, make it such a wonderful place with an experience you will get NOWHERE else. Not even Burning Man.
@@theartmannchannel burning man is far from what it used to be now its a fascist utopia run by big corporations pretending to be small. it used to just be a big rave in the desert
We actually have a lot of ex-Burners who go to Wasteland and many have actually replaced BM with WW for many reasons. The community is more tight knit, you get a more specific experience and overall the attitude is just different. You'll feel it as soon as you go and like most of us, you will fall in love with it immediately. Seriously, if you do anything "adventurous" in your life you should absolutely go to at least one. But like many good things, once you go you'll be hooked. In fact the best years to go are those after your first visit because you will have met lots of different groups of people, might get yourself into a tribe (best way to go), or might even prove your mettle in costume-work that you get to join an "inner city" tribe. Those in the inner-city are what's called a "360 degree camp", meaning you're there as part of the attraction. Everything you have that's visible to others MUST be "period" or in other words, of the Wasteland aesthetic. But honestly, if nothing is preventing you from going, I implore you to go, you will not regret it!
This is what cosplaying is about and being part of a wholesome community event to partake in and act some awesome wasteland scenarios with good judgement of course ha ha, but none the less awesome to see wonderful community.

If you're wondering, yes, there is a high percentage of open/poly types at this event, but that's of all ages and there are plenty of "normal" people who go as well. The age range however is mostly in the 25-35 range, not so much in the over 40 crowd. However a lot of us started going ten years ago and we've thusly aged into middle-age but have no intention in stopping our attendance.
Good call on spaghettios. My dad had a race boat that we went out in on the weekends when I was young...a few cans of ravioli, beanie weenies and dinty moore stew inside the engine cowling meant we always had a hot meal ready.
