My table saw is on the budget side of things and the throat plate is fairly thin as yours is. This is the first video I have found that shows how to make one for these type of saws that use a thin plate with almost square ends. So a big thank you James for this instruction, I am impressed and it is added to my "to do" list now. Thank you. Tony.
Hi Tony, no problem at all. Like you I was getting quite annoyed at the lack of insert/throat plate videos that didn't cover the budget end of the market saws, so no better time to make one 👍
I use Laminate floor scraps. Different thicknesses (10mm, 12mm etc) depending on the table saw. I made 12 (at one time) so far and have a lifetime supply.
Thanks for doing the video James, I think this looks like the best design I have seen for this saw 😄👍 I just bought the Evolution Rages 5-s last week and I have to say it's not a bad bit of kit for the money and can pretty much cut through any material you choose to throw at it, however while trying to cut the very first thin strip, the piece I cut got sucked into the blade area and it was tricky trying to get it back out again and this took some time to do, so I need to build a zero clearance plate and your one is the best design I have seen although I'm not sure my missus will be happy about me putting a piece of PVC pipe in her precious oven, especially when she goes to turn on the kitchen tap and all the water gushes out onto the floor from underneath lol 😄😄 By the way, I bet you will be popular with your neighbours if you are planning on using the machine in your livingroom especially when they are trying to watch Corrie street or something, lol 😂😂🤣 Glen 👍
Hi Glen, lol didn't end up using the saw inside in the end, such was my dedication to wanting to make the insert plate I took some holiday from work to get it done. I really like the table saw, I've used it loads, and it's always performed well for me. The zero clearance insert plate does work well, I to had all those small bit slide down between the saw and clog up the dust extraction, well worth making 👍
No, all it was was when I started the saw up, the blade kicked it up slightly as obviously the cut I had made wasn't quite long enough, I'm talking about probably 1mm. So just pushed it back down and works great. I've sprayed it blue and have used it in other videos since
AND, not to be outdone, believe it or not, you can ALSO make a pipe out of a piece of flat plate plastic. Just find a wooden pole at your local Big Box store (minimun purchase 20ft length) and calculate the width of the plate needed to complete the circular pipe circumference (pi x r squared come to mind). Then heat the plate and carefully wrap the soft plastic around the wooden pole and use PVC solvent to connect the edges, and 'voila, you have a pipe from a flat plate. Ain't RUclips Wunderbar?

Hi James, just ordered the Rage 5s after watching your review, should turn up tomorrow and the first thing to be made is this zero clearance insert and one for 45 degrees. Has the double sided tape held up ok or did you glue it in the end?
Hi buddy, glad I could be of some service to you. That's a great project to make a start on, I've had no issues what so ever with the insert plate I made, apart from 1 slightly high spot from melting the pipe (1mm max) which I smoothed out with some sand paper. You will really enjoy using the saw 👍
Because even with a plywood backing, perspex would be to flexible, the plywood wood work but would cause friction. The pvc pipe allows the wood to slide over it with minimal friction, whilst adding stability to the insert plate
An alternative to the oven is a heat gun if you have one available and you can do it outside if fumes are a concern. They use them for creating archery bows out of sched 40 pvc

Yes, you then have to make a zero insert plate for 45° cuts, but this is the while point in a zero clearance insert plate, you make them to suit the needs of your cut
MY zero clearance plate was made by gluing a large sheet of quarter inch fiber board as large as the table saw to a 2 X 4 then clamp the 2 X 4 to the fence and adjust for the known thickness of the 2 X 4. Then raise the blade. No need to remove the current backplate. The ONLY thing you have to be correct about is your measurements. I ran the 2 X 4 through the surface planer to make it a solid 1 1/2 inch thick. Then some notches for my clamps, then glue it to the fiber board. So if I wanted to make a 2 inch cut on something (for example) I just moved the fence 3 1/2 inches from the first edge of the blade then clamped my zero clearance plate down. Zip away. Done. AND after a while from repeated use in different measurement settings if need be you can always pull the fiber board off the 2 X 4 and put a new sheet on it and you're good to go again. For the number of times I've ever needed zero clearance - I have yet to remanufacture my first piece. Given that it clamps to the rip fence, it's always straight and true. And removal is quick and easy. The ONLY issue I've come across is dust collection. With a zero clearance plate you don't get the air flow to evacuate the dust and it can accumulate in the hose.
Wow, that's an impressive message, and it sounds like you have quite a cool set up there with your zero clearance plate. I don't have a stand alone planer or thiknesser so I use the zero clearance plate a lot for truing up stock.
Hi, yes I've seen that done before, but both my miter saw and table saw have 255mm blades fitted to them, so I don't own a smaller blade. But thanks for mentioning it.
At what temperature did you set your oven? Brilliant way to flatten out the PVC! Thanks for showing me how save some money by making this for my table saw!
It was trial and error with the temp, I just put it on a medium heat, and kept checking on it until it was pliable. Didn't want to turn it up to much incase it melted
I considered using the saw, but the amount of plywood left attached to the pvc was about 0.5mm so I thought I'd get a more accurate cut with the router
OK I understand. My circular saw has the same arbor as the table saw. So sometimes it is convenient to put a circular saw blade into the table saw. But if you don't have a circular saw that idea doesn't help you much.
Haha, no it didn't, because it's not melted it doesn't leave any smell at all! If you put it on a medium heat so it just heats it until its pliable it will be fine
If PVC pipe does become hot enough to catch fire, it releases dioxins into the air, which are harmful to both humans and the environment. ... Even when PVC is just heated, it also may release carcinogenic vapors that can cause cancer. Not something I would put in my oven.
Great idea, and good video showing how you did it. Thanks. But the bit at the end where you're ripping the wood down, I'm amazed you still have two thumbs :O
I agree. I try not to be one of the safety police, but the boatd was 1 1/2"....the rip piece plus blade was about 1"....so yourthumb was 1" from a spinning blade. Believe me, nobody days, "i think i will go cut my fingers off." But you keep putting them that close and it will happen

Good idea. But I will say to be very careful using a table saw to cut pipe as it was not designed for the use. I can attest as I am now missing the end of my finger by doing so.
Unless you live in the middle of the brazilian jungle there is probably a piece of plexiglass in some shop in your neighbourhood... so this nonsense with flattening the pipe is ridiculous....
When you watched this you must have been listening to it in the middle of the Brazilian rain forest as clearly you didn't hear me say, I'm using up some scrap pipe. I would of had to have bought a sheet of perspex if I did it your way, which wasn't the point of the video

You really should credit other people for your ideas when they've been copied. Izzy Swan?
Helps if you read the description box before commenting
Brilliant tip but you really were dangerous when cutting the strips at 6:00.. always push the piece in between the blade and the guide
Imagination is the true sign of intelligence
what the about the awful dust extraction of this machine? this is the worst point of this saw ....
That's evolution power tools for you! But this video wasn't about that
Make a plywood insert much kinder to the blade.
This is a multi purpose blade, it's designed for cutting wood, metal, plastic etc
Good idea. But I will say to be very careful using a table saw to cut pipe as it was not designed for the use. I can attest as I am now missing the end of my finger by doing so.
Did you cut it off cutting a piece of pvc pipe like he does?
yak yak yak get to it already
There is a reason you can skip videos you know
Ha ha so you are “Banksy “ lol
I wish I had his money! Lol
So Scottish, even the wall.
Mile's wrong buddy. Mile's 🧐
Sounds more like West Country, although not as far west as Cornwall (been out the UK for 20 years so my accents are a bit rusty)
@@markgreatrix5511 your not to far out, much better guess then Scottish 🤔
Unless you live in the middle of the brazilian jungle there is probably a piece of plexiglass in some shop in your neighbourhood... so this nonsense with flattening the pipe is ridiculous....
When you watched this you must have been listening to it in the middle of the Brazilian rain forest as clearly you didn't hear me say, I'm using up some scrap pipe. I would of had to have bought a sheet of perspex if I did it your way, which wasn't the point of the video
...this video (as is) has no point at all.... sorry
To you maybe, but thousands of other people think different. Maybe you don't have the creative mind this is aimed at
@@satman1w You are a troll. Some people make things others (like you) talk shit.
It's so sad that Englishmen can't speak English.
As to what bothers you?
