There is supposed to be a small amount of play to allow for heat expansion. Once warmed up the components expand and will have much tighter clearances and therefore much less play especially considering how hot they get.

I have the exact same engine in my 1996 L200. (4d56T) recently had the fuel pump rebuilt and it made an amazing difference. How much psi you planning on running on the new turbo?

Not so good if there’s lot of in and out play. But side to side if it’s just a few millimeters is O.K

Curious why you’re going to put the turbo pressure relief valve back in? Wasn’t the whole reason for plugging that to make higher psi?

The reason to plug it was because of the struggle to obtain a new one or replacement. It's protection for your engine.

My Dad is not a Mechanic by trade and it used to be a hobby for him. He does not like working on cars anymore.
Your right about the heat expansion and oil pressure for the turbine. It just felt like my OEM turbo was tighter.
Since I am building a 2nd engine, I am having the Injector pump properly rebuilt for it and making sure everything is in top condition for the new engine when it's running, I only plan to stick with the stock PSI, I want this machine to endure a long time. The after market Turbo from China is rated to 14.5PSI boost while people in the community say the OEM Turbo's can deliver 17-18psi before you have any issues.
Reliability is what I am going with. I don't want to have to spend big money on fixing a car in the future, I want to save my money and stick with this car to get me around. Currently the engine has 12PSI boost. And the Valve is also their because I want to prevent the blown head-gasket from blowing again with the additive in the system.
We will see how long it lasts.

MichaelTheMEKHANICAL ok thanks for responding. I recently had my injection pump overhauled and boy what a big difference that made! I was truely surprised at how much power I gained from having that done. I run 12ish psi on my turbo too. I have a 2.5 L 1996 L200 4d56T engine 4x4. It goes great and goes where other 4x4’s cannot. Love my little old Ute.

Is your dad a mechanic by trade or is it more of a hobby for him?
