You don't HAVE to put your hand under the ball to carry. Anytime you try to guide/push the ball horizontally (instead of down/on an angle) or pause/loose control of/fumble the dribble, it's a carry. It wouldn't have been a gather either, as he dribbled again afterwards. The problem was he did his stutter steps, realized he had an opening to his left, but the ball was at its peak height in the dribble which led him to fumble the ball as he made his move. That's a carry. It's NOT a travel, though.

He literally went from freethrow line to freethrow line only dribbling the ball 4 times. He took 9 steps from halfcourt to the freethrow line and the ball bounced twice. At the rate he dribbles the ball he could go the length of a football field and bounce the ball 20 times. And yes he did both travel and double dribble. That is what was called.
True, but again the studder step is one of the most difficult moves to perform in the Basketball. One small mistake can be led to a violation . In this video you can see he loses the ball while attempting that move by his own. That's a travel in any league. Good Call

For everybody that's calling this a travel you don't understand basketball. You can stutter step all you want as long as you keep your dribble. The ref didn't call travel he called palming
Absolutely true. When you perform an open dribble, technically you are not in possession of the ball, it's open for anyone....therefore steps shouldn't be counted. Not sure if this applies to this video, but the definition is correct. Been playing the game for over 20 years competitively, and use this often.
Why do people say that having a ring makes you a good player?Think about bench warmers. They barely play, and they still get a ring for doing nothing. So it's not like one person is getting a ring.
Kind of a ticky-tacky call, but the correct one nonetheless. MJ was carrying, it was one of those rare moments where he got indecisive with the ball and screwed up.
mj admitted to missing 2000 shots, 29 game winning shots, 5 dunks, 24 layups, and travelling/double dribbling 7 times, but thats what made him good.. he made mistakes
That's not 'traveling', it's called 'palming'. It's when you turn the ball over in your hand and delay dribbling it to the floor. In extreme cases it can turn into 'double dribble' when the ball is in your hands for an excessive time - you are essentially holding it - before you put it on the floor again.
@tmanx1 he didn't travel or double dribble, it looked awkward so the ref called it. it doesn't matter how many steps you take in the middle of a dribble. a dribble is down and then up, you could stutter step 5 times in that motion and it wouldn't be a travel. a double dribble is when you stop dribbling and start dribbling again, he did neither.
even a blind can tell it's a travel just by hearing those 5-drum-roll-steps he took w/o the dribble, MJ still the GOAT tho & forever will be i guess.. much respect. ;-)
Michael Oh Yep, i get that Bro, you could definitely take as many steps as you can before getting a hand at the ball to continue dribbling or pick it up to pass or shoot it, it's logical & acceptable of course, We see stuff like like that happens in fast-break situations, where the ball handler would advance the ball by dribbling (as if to bounce-pass the ball to himself) & chase-it-down to catch-up with it, But it was definitely not the case here, as the ball was never advanced & need not be chased-down in any way, it never even left MJ's wingspan all along, he just made an obvious miscalculation as he made his way to the basket, he carried the ball way too long while trying to do the hesitation-move when he should've dribbled it somewhere between those multiple steps he took & therefore called with the Dribbling/Palming-Violation which is correctly-fair. Kudos to the Ref right there. Anyway, as I've said, I have much respect for the MAN, Michael Jordan is still the Greatest Of All Time !!! ~ain't no basketball-violation can take that away from him tho.. ;-)
all palms are carries but not all carries are palms. Therefore if a palm happens it will be called a carry in the nba. palming is a term used in other levels of basketball. the commentator said it too. just because it's not exactly said in the rule book doesn't mean it has no penalty. the rule book also doesn't say elbowing someone in the head is a flagrant 2 foul but thats what ends up happening.
Don't think there's such a violation in the rules as "a carry". The reason a "carry" is a violation is once you put your hand under the ball, you've stopped dribbling, and the rules apply as if you've stopped dribbling and picked it up. If you start dribbling again technically its a double dribble
Palming is the same thing as carrying. Although not mentioned explicitly in the rule book, you'll find in Section 4, II, a, 2) that a player can't start dribbling again after "he permits the ball to come to a rest while he is in control of it." That is called a carry. While it may not have been the case here, that rule does exist. Also, was it really necessary to call me a "dumbass"? Greetings from the raving lunatic.
One thing good about it is; he didn’t complain. He knew that he travels on that play. I’ve seen not just a few but many of his pivot steps are traveling violation. But you can only see and tell them in the replay. Even referees in his time said that they can hardly see the steps when Jordan moves to the basket because he’s too quick. However, in the replay and slowmo, they’re evidently a clear violation. And many times Jordan was also called for the steps violation and he conceded to the call. This only means that he oftentimes outsmarted them.
This is a travel before, but for now it is not. As clearly ball is not under his palm and rolling on his hands. Michael jordans move is the start of evolution of basketball and becomes exiting and interesting.
I love how everybody freaking always defends Michael Jordan when it comes to stuff like this but whenever anybody claims this on Lebron everybody always says he did it's bullcrap.
Look closely at his left foot @ 0:20. He actually takes SIX steps. The ball doesn't bounce again until about a half second after he steps with his left foot @ 0:20. MJs still the greatest, but he's not perfect u guys. He's human. But this video lets us know that even the best of the best make amateur mistakes.
Your absolutely correct about the rule book...BUT he DOES palm the ball and continues motion...the refs cant call "palming" so in the rule books it is stated as traveling. So yes, his royal airness traveled unfortunately.
i'm nearly being serious when i say this.... it should be illegal to play in the NBA if you have too big of hands cause technically this isn't a travel except for the fact that jordan has such monsterously big hands that he can pick up the ball with one hand in between dribbles ....which is pretty much what he does here....
Funny how everyone gets butthurt and tries to save their precious Jordan when it clearly was a travel. Chill out people

For everybody that's calling this a travel you don't understand basketball. You can stutter step all you want as long as you keep your dribble. The ref didn't call travel he called palming
Jordan being the greatest of all time is what I saw
Jordan is the reason why the NBA is so pathetic, today.
Absolutely true. When you perform an open dribble, technically you are not in possession of the ball, it's open for anyone....therefore steps shouldn't be counted. Not sure if this applies to this video, but the definition is correct. Been playing the game for over 20 years competitively, and use this often.
Mj did that shit 24/7 wit them limited ass moves lls
Why do people say that having a ring makes you a good player?Think about bench warmers. They barely play, and they still get a ring for doing nothing. So it's not like one person is getting a ring.
Kind of a ticky-tacky call, but the correct one nonetheless. MJ was carrying, it was one of those rare moments where he got indecisive with the ball and screwed up.
Agreed. The right call (if any) is palming. Not one point did Jordan pick up the ball and stopped dribbling.
mj admitted to missing 2000 shots, 29 game winning shots, 5 dunks, 24 layups, and travelling/double dribbling 7 times, but thats what made him good.. he made mistakes
PG: Magic
SG: Jordan
SF: Bird

HE DID PICK UP HIS DRIBBLE, once he gripped the ball, and that's exactly what he did, he can't take a million steps with it in his hand.
That's not 'traveling', it's called 'palming'. It's when you turn the ball over in your hand and delay dribbling it to the floor. In extreme cases it can turn into 'double dribble' when the ball is in your hands for an excessive time - you are essentially holding it - before you put it on the floor again.
@tmanx1
he didn't travel or double dribble, it looked awkward so the ref called it. it doesn't matter how many steps you take in the middle of a dribble. a dribble is down and then up, you could stutter step 5 times in that motion and it wouldn't be a travel. a double dribble is when you stop dribbling and start dribbling again, he did neither.
even a blind can tell it's a travel just by hearing those 5-drum-roll-steps he took w/o the dribble, MJ still the GOAT tho & forever will be i guess.. much respect. ;-)
Rulebook says step count doesn't matter as long as you didn't pick up your dribbling.
Michael Oh
Yep, i get that Bro, you could definitely take as many steps as you can before getting a hand at the ball to continue dribbling or pick it up to pass or shoot it, it's logical & acceptable of course, We see stuff like like that happens in fast-break situations, where the ball handler would advance the ball by dribbling (as if to bounce-pass the ball to himself) & chase-it-down to catch-up with it, But it was definitely not the case here, as the ball was never advanced & need not be chased-down in any way, it never even left MJ's wingspan all along, he just made an obvious miscalculation as he made his way to the basket, he carried the ball way too long while trying to do the hesitation-move when he should've dribbled it somewhere between those multiple steps he took & therefore called with the Dribbling/Palming-Violation which is correctly-fair.
Well of course he didn’t complain 😂 he literally knew he traveled and it was obvious asf

Agree 100% but many times he traveled also, and not called. It only means that he outsmarted them.
@@paeng46no you haven't you I/diot
@@memeox5068no it wasn't you m0r0n
@@paeng46and many times. No travels. I/diot
This is a travel before, but for now it is not. As clearly ball is not under his palm and rolling on his hands. Michael jordans move is the start of evolution of basketball and becomes exiting and interesting.
Lol MJ makes no mistakes...Some people make MJ wayyyyy more than he really is.
that shouldn't even be a violation. the dribble was never interrupted.
I love how everybody freaking always defends Michael Jordan when it comes to stuff like this but whenever anybody claims this on Lebron everybody always says he did it's bullcrap.
Yep
Look closely at his left foot @ 0:20. He actually takes SIX steps. The ball doesn't bounce again until about a half second after he steps with his left foot @ 0:20. MJs still the greatest, but he's not perfect u guys. He's human. But this video lets us know that even the best of the best make amateur mistakes.
Horance Grant's glasses were EPIC
The beautiful thing about this video is, Jordan didn't complain a bit. They called travel on him, he's back on defense with his mouth shut.
see mj knew he did it and didn't complain or nothing . unlike today's players
Your absolutely correct about the rule book...BUT he DOES palm the ball and continues motion...the refs cant call "palming" so in the rule books it is stated as traveling. So yes, his royal airness traveled unfortunately.
50% of michael jordan fans have never seen him play a game in their entire life
if youtube was around during the Michael era... there would be comments like "jordan traveled"
I don't care. He's Michael Jordan. He can do whatever he wants to
This video is quickly approaching lightsaber status.
He wasn't called for traveling; he was called for palming (carrying) the call.
@Legendfever whoever said that? he's the GOAT. doesn't mean he's perfect, but is closer to perfect than any other NBA player in history
Every basketball player travels and palms the ball, there isn't one basketball player who doesn't
i'm nearly being serious when i say this.... it should be illegal to play in the NBA if you have too big of hands cause technically this isn't a travel except for the fact that jordan has such monsterously big hands that he can pick up the ball with one hand in between dribbles ....which is pretty much what he does here....
So it's a travel big deal. Still the GOAT
i like when people try to make clever comments to be a badass on the internet
