I drove an artic and I absolutely loved it. I would love to do it part time on the weekend or whenever I'm free. It's such a joy, and the size feels incredible. The only thing I don't like is when you drive in unfimiliar areas where the roads can get narrow or blocked completely by road works. Than can be stressful because you're constantly worried about getting stuck.
As a Sheffielder, Hillsborough is such a pain to drive in. So many bus gates and one way systems. I get annoying just driving in a standard car to hats off to you!
This probably gets easier with experience but as a normal car driver, this just looks so difficult. I always respect bus drivers for being able to navigate such a large box on narrow roads with all the parked cars. But HGVs are on another level with the joint and having to reverse with it. Even if i had the ability, this job would stress me out too much.
Depends on the bus and the lorry combo - a normal swedish bus has a pretty large overhang in the rear so if you don't plan ahead and watch your mirrors you will side swipe a sign, another bus or a car or a truck WHILE driving forward.... A normal 25 m comb scandinavia lorry doesn't have that behavious, and so while at least going fw they are a bit easier - but think about weight. If the road edge is weak stay away from them....
Worst store deliveries I’ve ever done are the express/smaller stores in towns. Got told to get there at 6am as the car park will be empty at that time. Backed it onto the bay, they were short staffed so one guy on his own unloading and me, took over 2 hours to tip. By the time I got back into the cab, car park was full, barely any room to get out and lots of SUVs.
I have a class 1 license, passed in 1997. Boy these trucks are so quiet and easy with automatic now! I had a spl;itter and a range change to contend with and sometimes double de-clutching too, it's a different world, would love to drive a modern truck now, tempting.. I have no CPC though, I passed before that was a thing.
@Robinmuk I've just got mine back after 25yrs of not driving. Don't let the CPC thing be a barrier - Do it online and it's just 40 hours of boredom and you're good-to-go for 5 years. Good luck! 👍👍
I did Aldi Coulsdon and the instruction was to call an hour before arrival. I did this but the girl I spoke to didnt pass the message on. It turns out that they need this time to put cones out in the carpark as you have to drive into the car park and screw right around to get onto the bay. So when I turned up there was a line of cars parked across the turning circle. Ended up waiting until each one had loaded their shopping then put a road cone in that space, then sit back in the cab until the next one came out and repeat for about 15 cars. Then get on the bay, tip yourself, put 33 pallets in a space big enough for 10 pallets and job done.
I was surprised that we never got the same driver. If you are delivering to the same stores then you learn the quirks of each store, whether you park at the front or the rear, or the side and if there is an obscure lane that you need to access, or a one way system. Miss that and you have to drive around again. And then you know that Yorkshire Water have decided to dig the road up on 2 sides of my shop
Ive had to call ahead a few times, usually in greater london when security have to lift a gate for you to drive under a store, a real pain in the arse when they dont answer! Great to see your channel growing so fast! Im hoping my channel blows up soon too! All the best 👍
I Always admire the HGV drivers who make our stock deliveries. Watching them drive such a large and sometimes long vehicle makes me nervous!. Thanks for this insightful video!
Nice video. I did almost 4 years milk deliveries in and around London. Mainly Asda and Morrisons. Good experience because i use to start afternoon and didn’t get so much traffic. I didn’t get any assistance from staff but can’t complain to much.
I did this job too. Was hands down, one of the worst jobs I’ve ever head. This was when Arla were going out of their way to take the piss out of their agency staff though, things might have changed now.
@@nohandle747 nothing changed. I was lucky because at Aylesbury dairy afternoon shift only have big stores, maximum 5-6 drops. Day shift it’s a completely different story. 10-12 drops, maybe 15 drops if you work in Hatfield RDC. 😅
Couldn't handle this at all personally, I got my class 1 but ended up ditching it within months. Got my PSV license instead and ow with less than 2 years experience I am already doing international coach holidays all summer, double manned and staying in hotels every night with full breakfast and meal paid for. Personally I like interacting with all the passengers, know some would rather work alone with their own space which is the only benefit I can see for HGV driving nowadays (with even this compromised with full time trampers having their cabs given to agency drivers on days off.)
I'm a store driver. £49,700 for a 40 hour week. Handling 200+ kg roll cages on and off a tail lift. Reversing into busy car parks. We had a new starter recently, 1st day totalled 2 cars. It was also his last day. That's life. Survival of the fittest.
as a new hgv driver, i started driving for spar right off the gate. from a Category B car licence staight to C+E. man its a challenge, granted theirs urban trailers, but i wouldnt try to get my car in never mind ereverse an artic lol
@@SirCodezyy tried to squeeze through a gap instead of waiting for them to move. My employer says they don't mind paying you two or however many hours wages if you get stuck somewhere. Far cheaper than shelling out 10 grand on crash damage. If you're late, you're late. They'll never pull your chain about it. Just be safe. He took a risk. Now he'll never get such a well paid job as this outside of petrol tankers.
@@Nickbaldeagle02 Oh dear, unlucky for him! My goal for my career is to gain plenty of experience so I can become a European HGV Driver like my uncle. He loved it, constantly showed me pictures of the views he saw but don’t worry he told me all about the bad. Watch out for immigrants in your trailer, slashing your trailer, taking your diesel etc. But I could see myself being quite happy to drive a HGV for my career.
Bit of a dicky thing to say really. And that’s exactly the type of talk that puts people off doing the job. You’ve got to try your best to get the experience and if planners/transport want to send new drivers to awkward places that’s their issue. Everywhere you go there’s good and bad stores, sending a new pass driver to a bad store is incompetent (as usual for planners). Drivers are supposed to look out for each other and we’ve forgotten that.
I've done 31 years on the road delivery drivers don't get more we all wished we did . But just could not work in four walls . I jump back and forth from lorries to coaches . Both you go home worn out unless you run out of hours then you don't get home .
Take my hat off to you guys, i couldn't do it. I'm not a professional driver but i do a lot of miles and hate every single one of them. On another note, saw an artic reverse into a really tight gap the other day, super tight, driver done it in one with cars and obstacles all around him and he done it in seconds. He got out and looked about 14 years old! Well done mate, be a tough world without you guys.
To be honest once you get a feel for the size of the vehicle it becomes as easy as driving a car(sort of). Motorway driving is way easier in an artic than in a car, you've got such good visibilty. Now when I get back in my car and go on the motorway I feel like I have no idea whats going on around me.
Never drove a truck, have driven a forklift to take pallets off a truck though, but do work running a store, and given my uncle owned a trucking company, always showed respect to the drivers. Most came to us before opening, dark out and cold, so a cup of coffee, place for them to warm up breakfast, a bathroom & some hospitality went a long way to the drivers also being reliable & doing the best by us too. Our Drivers sometimes would have deliveries for dozens of stores, depending on whether it's pallets, milk men with crates, perishable, alcohol, some trucks we have to hand unload 120-200 cases of wine, if they put the pallets in the wrong orientation. Feel for the drivers on those drives. Without you guys, we simply do not have a store to run.
I do store deliveries too and I felt your pain on the second drop. Risk assessment says reverse in, but you could have easily drove in and turned inside haha. But no where to stop and go in and check first. All my drops are pains in the arse like this 🤣
The stressful bit is when other cars don’t want to wait and let you turn…..they try to get in between you or come in behind you when you are reversing….so you have to constantly look and wait and stop for them which takes longer and eventually holds up more traffic
I drive a rigid in rural Finland tbh the challenging spots are what makes my job interesting. The only thing that I dislike is when in the delivery information it is specified to call the customer beforehand and then they don't answer. Full respect to you and keep up the good work
I unload these things quite often at my store and every time I'm stood there thinking I wish I was driving it.. We are lucky our yard has had three wagons innit before, brilliant access.. I cant imagine the others are as easy as ours. Tipped a whole trailer of cages and pallets in 23minutes the other day. New record
Best deliveries are always the ones where they stand and watch you spend 10 minutes reversing in to a tight yard, then they tell you they want it on the other bay right on the other side of the store.
How the hell did I get here? One minute I was watching Osprey chicks on Loch Garten and the next minute I'm here. Well, after watching this fantastic, super interesting video I'm well and truly down another rabbit hole. You've clearly got the perfect temperament for this fascinating job, nice an calm with a touch of humour. Fantastic upload and fantastic commentary, cheers Raul, subbed.
Thanks for the info. I'm currently in a warehouse which has got a bit tedious! So did my HGV Class 1 and 2. I've got a job interview for Class 2 delivery work tomorrow. So hopping it goes well.
Probably didn't pick up the phone because there is usually only one person working back door/deliveries at a time because these supermarkets are always super tight when it comes to hours.
In the UK drivers get paid crap, absolute rubbish. Even in the US it is getting bad. But there still are some jobs, like Walmart trucking, where if you give them your life they will give you 100k a year. You'll be sleeping in truck stops with gunshots and h o e s, lose years of your life from the constant work, and be all alone. Maybe get in and get out at best. For some it's a lifestyle.
Job well done. I don't miss multi-dropping or doing store deliveries. Got it easy now on nights just going to the hub in the midlands then back to South Wales
I drive a wag and drag, it's 62 foot long and has the turning circle of the moon!! I absolutely hate going into towns and cities with it, but have to at times. I also hate having to reverse it in the dark and rain with stupid people walking behind you while trying to back into somewhere! 😢
I'm a lorry driver who drove a 7.5 tonne flatbed for travis perkins and I lasted a month at the job. Too stressful London streets are a pain in arse and I must have got two parking tickets in a space of a week when I was there. I've gone back to driving a 3.5 tonne mon-fri, £22 p/h No weekends and i'm not delivering in london anymore. Early start and early finish. Anyway good luck to you my friend👍

Gives me PTSD ! Had 1 place i had to go to fairly regular and i never knew how many cars would be in the car park i had to reverse trhrough, really tight entrance with old buildings where the second floor was wider than the first, the overhang was invisible in the mirrors and my left leg was shaking coz of the long slow reverse. My heart was racing before i even got there with the stress and anticipation. Then when tipped the exit would be blocked as someone "just nipped into the shop" for 20 mins !!"
Hillsborough Barracks, you probably could have span round in there if there been no other trucks in there. I deliver to the door in the corner for the fireplace shop

I seen this thumbnail and I was thinking that's the road into my hometown... And it was! I've never watched any hgv videos before and RUclips recommends one that was filmed in my small hometown. Very odd
I've always done store work. Sainsburys and now waitrose. Some yards are stupidly tight but it keeps me fresh lol always treated well by office and store staff. . The pay is over £20 an hour and home every night . General haulage is like £13 an hour, sleeping out all week and spoke to like shite
I did stobart tesco just after I passed my class 1. I can drive a rigid anywhere but sadly I don't think I'll ever drive an artic again. Oh, and that looks like sheff- I binned there for 12 months.
I could never do this, or I could physically do it but I would be stressed and not happy. i seen truckers do crazy shit in cramped cities with spotters and they have to make crazy tight moves because thats the only way they can fit. I don't know how it is in europe but you can never smoke weed due to random testing on your off times, a 260lb huge man cant even drink a 12 oz piss beer at the bar or a gathering drive completely sober... but when you have your trucking bus license you lose it for blowing just above 0 lol. literally sober much much lower than the limit but it dont matter. Mad respect to you guys because we need these guys but i would feel like a teenager, not free. I will never work a job where my responsibility extends pass the time clock, vacation or layovers. apppreciate you guys tho.

Ive been driving buses for 28yrs job for life they said? Not any more, the jobs going down the pan.. Seriously thinking about doing my Class 1 and switching careers...
I did this for 6 years in Canada, all trailer sizes, but often 53ft! Blocking traffic both ways to reverse off the street, motorists freaking out cause youre holding them up, just trying to do your job 😆
Used to deliver to that part of Sheffield for Warburtons in a class 2, wish they gave us delivery instructions like you, we just had to figure it out for ourselves, horrendous.
I haven't done store deliveries since I started driving trucks for a fish factory. And that was only in a rigid. It didn't pay well so I went on to HGV for a mining company and after 5 years to DG long haul work. The mines and DG pay really well but you have too learn too live in the truck for weeks at a time.
11:50 it looks like lots of room until you comit to it. i reckon you would end up not getting your read end past 90 degrees with the building to your right and it could end up getting jammed during busier hours. reverse seems like a way to remove liability from the yard and put it all on you in the street. ah nvm its a smaller trailer, makes more sense
I think I’d find this job really hard trying to navigate all the sharp streets and dealing with load it’s self it seems a lot more responsibility compared to a Home shop van. Home shop drivers earn around £50 “To Insure Prompt Service” extra a week doing 35 hours, plus the free brekkies from the cafe deliveries and restaurants and free drinks and crisp from customers, if you don’t mind dealing with the odd disgruntled customer it’s a decent job.
The drop in Sheffield. Why do they not put a notice of some kind on the door so you know where need to park up. How many drivers like you get there and wonder which of the many doors you need to aim for ? Crazy.
Not in northern ireland im afraid. the company thats got the poundpand contract over here are paying drivers an average of £12/hr. same with home bargains🤦♂️

My absolute nightmare job haha - I can barely parallel park. Respect to you guys.
It's all in the practice. With experience you will mark out your next move before your inner eyes as if the road was a blackboard.
Yup good call.. Tour coach driver is an upgrade from hgv!
Something to be said about freight that loads itself
I'm a store driver. £49,700 for a 40 hour week. Handling 200+ kg roll cages on and off a tail lift. Reversing into busy car parks.
We had a new starter recently, 1st day totalled 2 cars. It was also his last day. That's life. Survival of the fittest.
Bloody hell how did he manage to total 2 cars?
as a new hgv driver, i started driving for spar right off the gate. from a Category B car licence staight to C+E. man its a challenge, granted theirs urban trailers, but i wouldnt try to get my car in never mind ereverse an artic lol
A true professional. Very calm. Very interesting indeed. Respect to you and that hard work from Portsmouth UK.😊😊😊.
Thank you for the appreciation
@@harleyhunt6073 what has driving a forklift got to do with driving a truck 💀
I do store deliveries too and I felt your pain on the second drop. Risk assessment says reverse in, but you could have easily drove in and turned inside haha. But no where to stop and go in and check first. All my drops are pains in the arse like this 🤣
With the second drop....i wouldn`t mind betting there is usually cars parked up the back and that`s why your instructed to reverse in.
@@stackit303 That was my guess too, but the instructions could have explained that (plus a map with location of where to park)
I always go onto Google maps, find where the best way is, then put the exact spot on my satnav.
Never fails!
You randomly popped up into my recommended and you are in MOLD, my childhood town I grew up in.
I’m so shocked
The stressful bit is when other cars don’t want to wait and let you turn…..they try to get in between you or come in behind you when you are reversing….so you have to constantly look and wait and stop for them which takes longer and eventually holds up more traffic
That happens a lot if you drive in London. I don't know what it is about London but everyone seems to be in rush
That second drop was tight with those traffic lights, but textbook manoeuvres.
I drive a rigid in rural Finland tbh the challenging spots are what makes my job interesting. The only thing that I dislike is when in the delivery information it is specified to call the customer beforehand and then they don't answer. Full respect to you and keep up the good work
I wish I had your reversing skills, I don’t even like reversing on to a bay. Hopefully in time I’ll get to your level.
The world depends on truck drivers. I wish you all the best ❤
Nice video Raul you seem a relaxed sort of guy who takes things in your stride wish I was like you when I’m driving trucks
Awesome vlog, Man. I would lose my mind doing store deliveries.
You make it look so easy, I love watching these! I'm sure it's not easy though, you just have the skill :)
This guys funny. He's so chilled 😂
Ahh a bit of Truck driving vid after a terrible day at work
the little things that makes someone's day.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I was like “I recognise that street” then I heard you say Mold and I was like “holy shit that’s where I used to live”
I think its truly amazing how u driving such a large lorry respect to u all
That takes some skill that dose
8:11 With a 4 On 4 Off rotation you get 3 Weekends On, 3 Weekends Off and 2 Weekends with a split On/Off Off/On.
i was just thinking as you reversed out the gate to turn "well that's how the gate got damaged " 😂😂😆 then you said it
This is exactly the kind of content that i've been looking for. Keep going!
When did Arnold schwarzenegger do class one driving lol love the video dude
😄😄
We, didn't have instructions, mate, we did by instinct, but your a good driver! .
Job well done. I don't miss multi-dropping or doing store deliveries. Got it easy now on nights just going to the hub in the midlands then back to South Wales
wow the city is spotless very clean
I wish I was you, you're so good, so calm. You make it look easy
That's because it is.
I drive a wag and drag, it's 62 foot long and has the turning circle of the moon!! I absolutely hate going into towns and cities with it, but have to at times. I also hate having to reverse it in the dark and rain with stupid people walking behind you while trying to back into somewhere! 😢
love this man
I'm a lorry driver who drove a 7.5 tonne flatbed for travis perkins and I lasted a month at the job. Too stressful
London streets are a pain in arse and I must have got two parking tickets in a space of a week when I was there.
I've gone back to driving a 3.5 tonne mon-fri, £22 p/h
No weekends and i'm not delivering in london anymore.
Early start and early finish.
Anyway good luck to you my friend👍
who do you work for that pays £22p/h 3.5 tonne driving??? I drive a 3.5 tonne mon-sat for half that?
@@ross6509My mate runs his own haulage firm,
I haul movie sets all over the UK and ireland.
I'm off to bray in ireland next week🇮🇪 It's who you know in this game.
You have to chase the money
@@stephenm6100 fancy giving me a job mate? £22 an hour sounds like heaven for driving a 3.5tonne
Jeez some money for driving a van any more jobs although I’m a Manchester lad living in Castlebar west of Ireland
I could watch these videos all day mate 👍 top man
Gives me PTSD !
It's not just haulage industry, the jobs that are hard to fill are generally payed better than other just to try & fill the roles
Hillsborough Barracks, you probably could have span round in there if there been no other trucks in there. I deliver to the door in the corner for the fireplace shop
Nice drive Raul. Good luck with the northern lites photography. Remembering the Imola chats on route. JW
Thanks pal, hope to see you on the next run 🍺
Used to do High Street deliveries on contract to Spring Ram delivering bathroom suites to all the diy stores....and no we never got paid more..limited hours to deliver to stores..9-5...some even closed at 3.30..job was crap..all hand ball..used to do London west side no place to park
I would call you chilled too. Excellent job matem❤
If you guys wanna learn to drive a lorry, start playing euro truck simulator. You can learn a lot from this game which will prepare you for the real life lorry-driving. I've played over 70 hours and understand this business much, much better now. Great video.
Ive been driving buses for 28yrs job for life they said? Not any more, the jobs going down the pan.. Seriously thinking about doing my Class 1 and switching careers...
Have you done it?
Getting my license soon so it's cool to have some insight! Thanks man.
How's it going?
I did this for 6 years in Canada, all trailer sizes, but often 53ft! Blocking traffic both ways to reverse off the street, motorists freaking out cause youre holding them up, just trying to do your job 😆
So chilled this guy, love it 😊
That impressed me.... I was nervous for you.
Used to deliver to that part of Sheffield for Warburtons in a class 2, wish they gave us delivery instructions like you, we just had to figure it out for ourselves, horrendous.
I work for Aldi. Some of our stores are a challenge because we go in through the car park
I haven't done store deliveries since I started driving trucks for a fish factory. And that was only in a rigid. It didn't pay well so I went on to HGV for a mining company and after 5 years to DG long haul work. The mines and DG pay really well but you have too learn too live in the truck for weeks at a time.
11:50 it looks like lots of room until you comit to it. i reckon you would end up not getting your read end past 90 degrees with the building to your right and it could end up getting jammed during busier hours.
reverse seems like a way to remove liability from the yard and put it all on you in the street. ah nvm its a smaller trailer, makes more sense
superb!!!! champion!!! you are fantastic.
Really enjoying your videos.
Fantastic Raul thank you for an insight into your life
So funny hearing your accent mixed with Welsh 😂
The drop in Sheffield. Why do they not put a notice of some kind on the door so you know where need to park up. How many drivers like you get there and wonder which of the many doors you need to aim for ? Crazy.
Nice to have proper mirrors a lot of our wagons have the digital mirrors they are very bad
Take my hat off to you. You've just gained a subscriber!
Nicely done bro ! Calm & level headed wins the day.. 👌👌👌👌
Not in northern ireland im afraid. the company thats got the poundpand contract over here are paying drivers an average of £12/hr. same with home bargains🤦♂️
Aww bless with your cute little trailer
