"Wasshoi! Wasshoi! Wasshoi! Wasshoi!“ Good reaction, but I really don't get where you were coming from with thinking this was subdued in any way whatsoever,😲 this song is just 100% energy from start to finish. Maybe it was just you trying to be quiet if your wife was asleep that was subdued ... listen again and turn it up.🤘
You must know the live performances of this will be completely wild and the crowd will go nuts! 🤘🤪🤘(That has already happened).
Su-metal is the lead vocalist, Moametal and Momometal were certainly doing their part with the call & response. Also this was Momometal's first official music video since she was revealed as the official new member in April and she even got her own solo part with the spoken kabuki theatre section.
The song title translates as 'Metali' (or 'Metari') which is a fusion of the words metal and matsuri (festival) - no Bloodywood or Indian in this, it is all Japanese.
They are inviting us all to dance - I may have this a bit wrong, but there is something in the lyrics (I think in Momometal's kabuki section) about we are all idiots or fools - the idiots who watch and the idiots who dance ... so as we're all here and we're all idiots why just watch, we may as well all dance.
The song is about a Metal Village holding a metal festival, so they have included all the matsuri shouts everybody would be calling out as encouragement to the people carrying heavy floats etc like "Sore, Sore", "Dokoisho" and "Wasshoi!".
This is what Tom Morello said:
"I am a big fan of BABYMETAL, a band that is both power rocking and constantly surprising with dizzying musical twists and turns. I’ve been trying to work with them for some time and when they sent me the demo of METALI!! I knew I could rock that shit like crazy!"
_Wasshoi wasshoi!_
I don't remember following your BM journey but I'm glad to see you already this amazing group and came back to hear this new collab song with guitar legend Tom Morello.
They recently went on a live tour at Asia and later Australia, hopefully you had the chance to see them live.
We got another banger for Japanese festival or any festival around, they performed this recently at Summer Sonic and hopefully they will do the same at Blue Ridge Rock, Aftershock or Louder Than Life and get the crowd going nuts with this.
It's their first song released with this new BM reborn and formation.
I heard it before the release because they premiere this at Apocrypha - Another One show, and someone leaked this on a fancam, it was fun and really unexpected but everyone was having a blast and even started with a Kami Band solo after a while without it.
The song title is Metali!! (metal + matsuri, which is a Japanese festival) and you can hear it in the spoken section when one of them (MomoMetal) is doing the Kabuki moves style, she's the new official member of this group since April 1st, no Yuri or Yui is no longer with this group since 2018 officially.
The lead singer stage name is SuMetal and the other OG member is MoaMetal.
Just so you know "wasshoi" is another shout used in Japanese festival when men are carrying the shrine, similar to sore and soya you can hear in Megitsune and Karate.
I can totally see why they pick Tom Morello on this, the groove, the catchiness, the super energetic jump and those typical 90's vibes at funk or alternative metal live concerts.
You're not the first one finding Indian vibes, i got some Punjabi MC - Knight Rider the moment I heard that intro lol Only thing here they're using traditional Japanese instrument called shamizen, just like during Megitsune, so it's 100% Japanese. Fun fact, KobaMetal is aware of Bloodywood and he likes that band.
Next suggestion:
- Believing live at PIA Arena MM 2023.
Thanks for sharing this and see you next time.🦊🤘🎸

You were spot on with your comments! The theme of the song is Japanese matsuri (festivals). You may have seen the big parades walking (or rushing) through the streets, often with big, colorful shrines or wagons. The „washoi“, „sore“ and „dokkoisho“ chants are the typical chants you‘ll hear during the festivities. So naturally this song is going to really shine live with the crowd participation.
There are also other cultural references like the small tea tables, the masks, the fans and much more, and the spoken part in the middle reflects the typical tone and mannerism of Kabuki theater.
Wonderful! Thank you for sharing and enlightening us on some of the references that went over our head :D
Yeah, the wearing of shoes/boots on the tatami, kicking over the chabudai, and the hands punching through the Shoji... in the first minute of this song, they both paid tribute to, and "scoffed" at so many traditions!
That's the interesting thing about Babymetal. Everyone has such a different take on their music. Since Metali has come out the general consensus has been that it's one of the most high energy songs they've done in a while. Yet there have been a select few who were bored by it. It's all subjective so no wrong answers. It's just interesting.
I honestly think the Tom Morello solos were meh as well but, on the other hand, if he started shredding, would it fit the song at all? he did do a nice job of adding an accent to the music.
As far as the cultural stuff, it's always a bad idea to over-think Babymetal songs. Just go with it and have fun. You don't have to know anything about Japan or Japanese culture to realize it is obviously a party/hype song.
I think people overlook the "featuring" part, or they totally misunderstand what that actually means🤣
Subscribed. Meatli is 🔥. Hope they play this when I see them in a couple weeks. 🦊 🖖❤
It was a song featuring Tom Morello not a Tum Morello song he just bringing a bit of himself into it and he and the girls looked like they are having fun . The fans definitely will watching a live performance. Hope i see it performed when i see them 😁🤘🏼🦊🤘🏼
Hey hey! This may help you understand Metali:
1). Summer festival song, meant to be fun and energetic.
2). You’re right, definitely live song w/ call and response.
3). Cultural and other significance: first legitimate new song with newest official member Momometal. She does the spoken Kabuki part.
Kabuki theater is meant to be performed by men only, so Babymetal breaking barriers of restrictive tradition (also see them kick the tea sets away).
It’s Festival season in Japan, so this song definitely caters more to Japanese crowd. But, it’s a fun and energetic banger for everyone as well.
Cheers! 🤘🦊
Thank you! I love that they are breaking boundaries and challenging cultural restrictions in that way :)
@@twodudestalkmusic you’re welcome! Someone else suggested Andrew Hartley’s channel who breaks down Babymetal’s lyrics and cultural reference in detail. Maybe helpful if you’re interested!
Whose Yume?? 😅😂😂😂😂😂 also i have NO idew how you guys thought this was subdued lol hesviest most fierce vocals of any BM song and the heaviest guitar riff ever lol
Many apologies, I got mixed up with Yui Mizuno, the former backup vocalist. Thanks heaps for the comment. we really appreciate it!!!!
Well that's fine, great reaction you guys are cool 👍 I find it interesting because personally I actually got surprised by this song because of certain aspects totally opposed as you guys expected maybe, things you don't see very often in BABYMETAL wich is pure Japanese approach with the instrumentation and SU's vocals are very different here than usual, about the other girls they usually don't sing much guys lol I would say this song actually might be one of the most if not the most "heavy" in terms of vocals, there is a lot of vocal layers more than what they usually utilize. The guy on the left mentioned about it being designed as live (still being a studio version tho) and maybe that's the reasons that for you guys made not vibe much with the song I guess? Because it was a more raw recording and you didn't expected that? Well, anyway different perspectives are interesting, no problem about that 🦊🤘🏼
"it doesn't seem to have as much drive as they usually do"
....WHAT?!!!!!! smh....WHAT???!!!
Well if you only heard songs like Road of Resistance and Arkadia for example this really doesn't have as much drive as those songs:D
@@Tyyppl speed does not equal drive. Arkadia and RoR are amphetamine fueled speed competitions. Metali is a punch your face, gut driven, gang jumping rhythm beat.
I honestly haven't seen another reaction that doesn't think this is one of the best BABYMETAL songs for many a year. But as you say, it is made for live audiences.
Thanks for watching! We definitely appreciate that we seem to be in the minority on this one.
We are definitely fans of BabyMetal, but not every song can be our favourite hah
Nice reactin!!Thank you for your great analysis and understanding of BM. I want you to enjoy BM more.
It was the same with megitsune, when a song has a lot of Japanese culture in it, it is difficult to explain. Read only if you are interested, as the content may be a little removed from the song itself.(I'm sure you have an idea of what you're getting at, but I'll write it down in a nutshell.)
It is quite impossible to translate the lyrics into English, so only the background and words are explained.
METALI is a word that adds METAL and 祭り(Matsuri=festival). And this song is a representation of a Japanese 夏祭り(Natsu Matsuri=summer festival). For us Japanese, these sound and lyrics make our Matsuri blood boil. Matsuri is the heart of the Japanese people. It is said that there are a total of 300,000 festivals in Japan, both large and small. Matsuri means a ritual for worshiping Gods or Buddha, or an event held in gratitude towards nature. 神輿(Mikoshi=portable shrine) is a carriage for Gods. In the festival, Japanese people get around the Mikoshi and carry it on their shoulders in order to worship Gods. While carrying the Mikoshi, the carriers will yell "Wasshoi, Wasshoi" or "Soiya, Soiya" or "Sore, Sore".(However, the calls vary considerably from region to region.)
神輿(Mikoshi=portable shrine) and お囃子(Ohayashi=festival music) of Matsuri have a history of more than 1,000 years and are etched in the DNA of the Japanese people.
The funny-looking masks with their mouths agape are ひょっとこ(hyottoko). It has existed for roughly 500-600 years.
The masks were originally used in 神楽(kagura). Kagura is a dance dedicated to the gods. In the film Your Name, Mitsuki danced dressed as a 巫女(Miko=shrine maiden), which is also a type of Kagura.
The counterpart to the Hyottoko is a female mask called おかめ(Okame) or おたふく(Otafuku). Okame and Hyottoko masks are sold at Japanese 夏祭り(Natsu Matsuri=summer festivals). Masks have long been a familiar part of everyday life in Japan, and these are sometimes used in anime.
The Japanese consider foxes and cats to have strong spiritual powers and fear them. At the same time, foxes are enshrined in shrines as messengers of the gods.
The instrument used in the intro is the 三味線(shamisen), a three-line string instrument. The shamisen has been used in Japan since the 15th or 16th century. It appears to have originally come from China.
The fan-shaped object held in the hand is called 扇子(Sensu). It is a tool to cool yourself by sending wind to you and can be folded into a stick shape.
Text on the Sensu is in 赤子金属, 赤子(akago) is baby, 金属(kinzoku) is metal.
ぴーひゃら(Pehyara) in the lyrics is the sound of a 篠笛(Shino bue=transverse flute) used at Matsuri.
どっこいしょ(Dokkoisho) is the voice used when lifting heavy objects. The choreography when saying "Dokkoisho" is the pose of carrying a heavy object on the shoulder.
The choreography when saying わっしょい(Wasshoi) is a pose for carrying a Mikoshi(portable shrine).
It is called 合いの手(Ainote) or 掛け声(kakegoe), a call to be inserted between songs. 合いの手(Ainote) or 掛け声(kakegoe) can be Wasshoi, Dokkoisho, Sore, Soresore, Ha, Ho, Yo, Yoisho, etc. There is nothing set in stone, and during the live performance, it is OK as long as you shout words similar to those uttered by MOA&MOMO in the atmosphere.
The lyrics "Odorin chai" and "Utain chai" are in the dialect of SU-METAL's birthplace, Hiroshima. In standard language, the words are "Odori nasai" and "Utai nasai", meaning "you should dance" and "you should sing".
MOMOMETAL speaks in the middle, that is 歌舞伎(kabuki) speaking.
MOMOMETAL's odd pose is the Kabuki climactic pose.
The lines said by MOMOMETAL come from the 阿波おどり(Awa Odori), a traditional Japanese dance. Originally by.
踊る阿呆に(Odoru Ahoo ni)、見る阿呆(Miru Ahoo)、同じ阿呆なら(Onaji Ahonara)踊らにゃ損損(Odoranya son son)!
(The dancers are fools, the watchers are fools. Both are fools alike so, why not dance?)
※踊る(odoru=dance),阿呆(ahoo=fool),見る(miru=view)

I going to have to check and see if iou guys have a BabyMetal reaction playlist because I don’t remember seeing your channel.
Welcome though.
Hi there! This is our first reaction video for a BabyMetal song, although we are familiar with their previous albums over the years.
Understood
BabyMetal began in 2010 there were Suzuka Nakamoto age 12 Moa Kikuchi and Yui Mizuno (Yui left in 2018 due to health reasons). Both Moa and Yui were 11 years old All three girls were friends and classmates who attended an idol school/group (Sakura Gakuin) founded in 2010 by Amuse Talent Agency for girls 10 to 15. Themed around school life (they attended regular school as well) the girls would learn and train at vocals, dancing, public speaking and etiquette, etc., graduate at age 15 and then move onto whatever entertainment path they chose or that suited their talents.
Key Kobayashi was a music producer for Amuse and heard Suzuka sing at age 9 and was impressed with her strong vocals and stage presence. Kobayashi was a fan of heavy metal but believed that the genre had become stale and tired (especially in Japan) with metal bands getting old Kobayashi believed the genre needed to be reborn (BabyMetal means the birth of a new metal genre). Kobayashi felt that Suzuka had the ability to front a metal band and that her vocals and presence could withstand the metal guitars and drums. The fusion of Jpop and Metal began. He placed Moa and Yui as backup singers/dancers and a phenomenon was about to result.
At first Amuse showed no interest and the girls had only financing from Kobayashi. They performed at strip malls and small venues using clothes borrowed from friends and family. No money for a real band they had friends dressed in homemade skeleton costumes pretending to play instruments to a backtrack. They became a sensation (these young ladies paid their dues). Amuse saw the potential and in 2012 hired the best session musicians Japan had to offer (The Kami Band) who tours with them today (now includes world class musicians from the USA for tours outside of Asia).
If you choose to explore more of BabyMetal I suggest reacting to LIVE performance videos as this is where they shine.
They have over 60 LIVE songs/performances and each one is different. They are fearless exploring many genres and have the respect of the legends of Metal such as Metallica, Slipknot, Rob Zombie, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Judas Priest and more.
Avoid Glastonbury LIVE performances as the sound production by the BBC (who was in charge of that festival did a terrible job - mics not turned on, incorrect volume levels, etc.)
Suggest reacting to these for a start.

At their concert in Yokohama on April 1 it was announced that a permanent third member Momoko Okazaki (who is also a graduate of Sakura Gakuin and has been appearing with them LIVE since 2019) has officially become the third member.
Their new album in my opinion that released March 24 is amazing with so many different styles.
Good luck and hope to see you again.
Absolutely is a hype song meant for the live show. I'm guessing there's no coincidence that it came out2 weeks from the start of the north american tour.
They played this live in Japan the day before this video came out.
They way they time and set up everything they do is pure marketing genius.
😉😉😉🤘🤘🤘
Yes, it's sure that this song is inspired by Bloodywood (they often play Bloodywood's songs before the show starts), however, we should not ignore that the melody, the chants, the groove and the musical instruments, not to mention the Kabuki-style spoken words at the mid-part, are purely traditional Japanese, not Indian.
Thanks for watching! We are acutely aware that a lot of this is traditional Japanese instrumentation and references. It was simply a basic similarity we were pointing out :)
@@twodudestalkmusic Oh, of course I did not intend to blame you! Let me apologize if you felt so! I rather thought that it was kind of interesting that the style of Bloodywood can be applied to express Japanese traditional music.
@@twodudestalkmusic Hibari Misora's OMATSURI MAMBO is another source of inspiration, in addition to Bloodywood: ruclips.net/video/V-SBrD80_rk/видео.html
「昔のBABYMETALが戻ってきた」と思った。
Shamisen, not sitar; Japan, not India.
I don't know what BABYMETAL you've heard, but this is BABYMETAL getting their kawaii back!
I agree with Grington300. Not sure how you think this is slower or subdued. This song is pure BABYMETAL. Amazingly fun, crowd hyping song with so much positive energy. I feel it looks like the girls are dancing towards me and into my home, telling me I am going to dance whether I want to or not. 🤘🦊🤘🔥
Sorry. This song is a metal village's metal ondo, so it is an extremely Japanese song that tells you to shut up and dance without being stiff. There is no typical development in metal. It is rather beautiful in its single-mindedness. It's not highbrow to ask for high-mindedness.
Not a good reaction, sorry.
The guy in the left was skeptical before the reaction and didn't get anything about the song, specially because of the cultural gap as he said. And it's funny because he noticed that this is a song to be performed live... since this is actually a "matsuri" (festival) song. The guy on the right just followed his friend. So my suggestions would be: one, be more open minded specially BEFORE the reaction because I knew you wouldn't like it beforehand. And two, build an own personalty.
Great you are not bouncing off the walls and stating this is the best thing you have ever seen. It proves you are not just going for views with your reaction. In addition, you acknowledge that you maybe missing cultural aspects of the video.
For me this collaboration blows away the dreadful Babymetal song called Distortion, with Alissa White-Gluz. The live version is not as bad.
