The song and choreography is taken from traditional Japanese summer festivals, most noteworthy the Awaodori festival. The song title Metari is a combination of two words. Metal and Matsuri (Japanese word for festival). It's written in both katakana(メタ) and hiragana (り) to emphasize the combination of the two words. The traditional instrument in the song is a shamisen. The words "wasshoi", "dokkoisho" and "so-re" are nonsense words used to cheer and encourage and keep rhythm. Like "heave -ho" or "c'mon!" (You've heard so-re before in Megitsune) words used when carrying a portable shrine through the streets during festivals. Including the Kabuki style moment for Momometal (which is confirmed by a Rollingstone interview article). The only thing missing is her growl "ARE YOU READY?!" that she does in the live version. (Look for it under Summersonic 2023)

At the concert when Momo's solo arrives, Sumetal tells everyone to sit on the floor, since Momometal's solo is a traditional Japanese kabuki theater performance where the audience is usually seated. It's epic to see all the concert audience sitting down

I started jamming with Tylr this song is so darn catchy. Momoko is doing a kabuki voice, a style of japanese opera. I LOVED how they gave her this sort of spotlighted intro to mark her permanet status as the new 3rd member. It was done so respectfully that it gives me goosebumps. Great reaction!

Su's definitely doing some really cool vocal things in this song, continuing on from the vocal development she has shown on TOO. Su has said in interviews that she spent a lot of time during pandemic just singing, and it seems like she put her time to good use practicing and developing new strings to her singing bow.
This song is definitely one for the live shows. They've already played it live three times and from the fancams we have seen it absolutely goes off live.

    Great reactions!
This song is full of elements of Japanese summer festivals. The Japanese love festivals, and according to statistics there are about 300,000 festivals throughout the country in a year. This is because there are about 75 000 traditional Buddhist temples and 80 000 Shinto shrines in Japan, each of which holds a seasonal festival.
Even in the small town of 8,000 inhabitants in the mountains where I was born, there are shrines and temples with a history of more than 400 years, temples have spring festivals and summer Bon Odori dancing, and shrines have spring Mikagura and autumn festivals. Please come to Japan one day and enjoy Japanese festivals.
One more thing, I should tell you that this song is a maximum homage to 'Omatsuri Mambo' by one of Japan's greatest and most legendary female singers, Hibari Misora (1937-1989). Hibari Misora made her debut at the age of 11 (her singing career began at the age of 8) and her outstanding singing ability and lovely smile helped the Japanese people to rise from the burnt ruins of WW2 and became a symbol of post-war reconstruction. She was 15 years old when she released 'Omatsuri Mambo' in 1952.

Also you need to check out the new sub unit Metalverse that finally made their solo debut at Summer sonic this weekend. They are what we use to call ChibiMetal and now they are a group of 5. They did 3 original song at their debut.

Amen to your last statement brother! They are going to revolutionise music and metal as we know it!
The one thing I will disagree with you on however is the idea that they were always in their prime. No, they never were, until now. When they started, they were still kids and the whole concept was still in it’s experimental stages. Then they lost Mikio, and then Yui, and from there they went through a storm. Yeah, the Avengers helped, but it was not the same. Now they have returned; undergone a lot of reflection. A renewed sense of purpose and drive. With a complete trio, Babymetal Death, corporate backing, and knowing what actually works musically. I truly do believe the idea of “Babymetal reborn” is not just something Su and and band are saying for lore sake. They mean it.

Female vocalists typically don't peak until 28 to early 30s ofcourse each individual is different but I would expect her to continue to sound better over the next 5 years, it is interesting watching the live fan cam of this that she seems to cope with singing this much better than The Other One songs, my guess is because this song is written for her today whereas the others were written for a Su 5 years ago

This unique and bright rhythm and melody is a mix of old Japanese folk songs called Ondo. Speaking of tradition and rock, "Livin' On A Prayer" was used as the song for a religious event in which local residents danced in a circle on August 15th, the Buddhist festival of "盆 Bon". And it is said that there was a favorable reaction from Bon Jovi himself.

I like that Su's vocals have grown to the point where she can carry a song without the constant harmonizing backing track she always had to perform under in the past. In recent shows, they've greatly reduced these backing tracks or even eliminated them altogether to allow her vocals to be more prominent. Also love that this isn't one of those electronica-based tracks that require her to be auto-tuned. This is 100% Su-metal, in your face and in your ears.
Great to see Momoko being given a feature spot not only in the song but in her first official music video with the group. Very happy for her.
Great to see this collaboration and for it to kick as well as it did, especially after that previous fail with that rap idiot.

Pretty certain they were already doing that in at least 2020 (except for Moscow show) if not 2018. Doesn't matter where you draw the line, the trend is clear: more her. Although on studio albums we do see, well hear, effects added to her voice sadly.

    Great reaction, thanks!
They have already performed this song three times live. The first one when the song wasn't even released officially. 😊
Good eye with the "Megitsune" reminiscence on the visuals. That's another "matsuri" (traditional Japanese festival) influenced song. And this song and music video share with "Megitsune" several other connections:
    - Similar setup. In the beginning of this MV they are performing in a fancy traditional tea or tatami room. In "Megitsune" they perform on an actual stage called "Nohgakudo" at Asagaya Shinmei-gu Shrine in Tokyo.
    - They clear the tatami by kicking aside the traditional tea paraphernalia. They do a similar move in "Megitsune" when they get rid of the kimonos. We interpret this as they want to put aside the more restrictive and elitist traditions in favor of more popular and inclusive ones.
    - The peeping masked character in the background.
    - The chants. Being both matsuri-influenced songs it's pretty obvious that they share some of the traditional chants like "Sore!" and "Wasshoi!"
    - Also the use of traditional instruments like shamisens, etc. due to the songs influence.
Definitely it's a great song, very groovy and funky. Love Su-metal clean yet aggressive vocals here. Very cool collaboration with Tom Morello, indeed!
And very happy for Momoko on her first song and (proper) music video. And for her special feature on that kabuki style speech in the middle.
    Until next time!

It was the same with megitsune, when a song has a lot of Japanese culture in it, it is difficult to explain. Read only if you are interested, as the content may be a little removed from the song itself.
METALI is a word that adds METAL and 祭り(Matsuri=festival). And this song is a representation of a Japanese 夏祭り(Natsu Matsuri=summer festival). For us Japanese, these sound and lyrics make our Matsuri blood boil. Matsuri is the heart of the Japanese people. It is said that there are a total of 300,000 festivals in Japan, both large and small. Matsuri means a ritual for worshiping Gods or Buddha, or an event held in gratitude towards nature. 神輿(Mikoshi=portable shrine) is a carriage for Gods. In the festival, Japanese people get around the Mikoshi and carry it on their shoulders in order to worship Gods. While carrying the Mikoshi, the carriers will yell "Wasshoi, Wasshoi" or "Soiya, Soiya" or "Sore, Sore".(However, the calls vary considerably from region to region.)
神輿(Mikoshi=portable shrine) and お囃子(Ohayashi=festival music) of Matsuri have a history of more than 1,000 years and are etched in the DNA of the Japanese people.
The instrument used in the intro is the 三味線(shamisen), a three-line string instrument.
The funny-looking masks with their mouths agape are ひょっとこ(hyottoko). It has existed for roughly 500-600 years.
赤子(akago) is baby, 金属(kinzoku) is metal.
"Pii hyara" in the lyrics is the sound of a 篠笛(Shino bue=transverse flute) used at Matsuri.
"Dokkoisho" is the voice used when lifting heavy objects. The choreography when saying "Dokkoisho" is the pose of carrying a heavy object on the shoulder.
The choreography when saying "Wasshoi" is a pose for carrying a Mikoshi(portable shrine).
MOMOMETAL speaks in the middle, that is 歌舞伎(kabuki) speaking.
MOMOMETAL's odd pose is the Kabuki climactic pose.
The lyrics "Odorin chai" and "Utain chai" are in the dialect of SU-METAL's birthplace, Hiroshima. In standard language, the words are "Odori nasai" and "Utai nasai", meaning "you should dance" and "you should sing".
The lines said by MOMOMETAL come from the 阿波おどり(Awa Odori), a traditional Japanese dance. Originally by.
    踊る阿呆に(Odoru Ahoo ni)、見る阿呆(Miru Ahoo)、同じ阿呆なら(Onaji Ahonara)踊らにゃ損損(Odoranya son son)!
(The dancers are fools, the watchers are fools. Both are fools alike so, why not dance?)
    ※踊る(odoru=dance),阿呆(ahoo=fool),見る(miru=view)
It is called 合いの手(Ainote) or 掛け声(kakegoe), a call to be inserted between songs. 合いの手(Ainote) or 掛け声(kakegoe) can be wasshoi, dokkoisho, sore, soresore, ha, ho, yo, yoisho, etc.
If you are interested in Mikoshi, musical performances, etc., please search youtube for these characters and watch the videos. When the Japanese see this, our blood starts to boil.

Rarely for me so far this sounded way better than the live - but recordings were poor and I'd guess the crowd are still picking up on the song. For me it's a bit like a 2023 Gimme Chocolate - way left of field but still great - and I agree - it definitely has an "old" feel for me.

    Babymetal Metali (feat) Tom Morello:-
Babymetal have joined forces with Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine for a new single ‘Metali’.
The new song is the latest in the Japanese kawaii metal band’s series of star-studded collaborations, and sees them partner with the Rage guitarist for another up-tempo, electrifying track.
The group first teased the release last week and, according to the press release, ‘Metali’ is “officially the first song by the newly reborn” group - now consisting of SU-METAL, MOAMETAL, and MOMOMETAL. It also confirms that the single was created with the vision of their crowd forming a circle pit at a metal festival this summer.
Babymetal - METALI (feat. Tom Morello)” was released as a digital Single in 2023. The Japanese Title “メタり” has a distinctive style of kana usage. It is written as the nominal form of the made up verb “to do metal”.
This song is characterized by the classic metal style of the Japanese band, combined with some j-rap touches that distinguish it from previous releases. And of course, the subject gets more frantic through the classic guitar style of Tom Morello, which fits quite well in the musical
    Lyrics Translation:-
It’s the metal-village festival metal song
    festival, festival, come together
make a ring, make a ring
    let the party horns dance1
brothers and sisters of metal-village too
    festival, festival, come together
make a ring, make a ring
    sing together
    like that, like that, heigh-ho2
you’re a fool if you dance, and a fool if you just look on, so let’s dance3
you have to dance and become a fool
like that, like that, like that, heigh-ho
you have to dance and sing
you have to sing and dance
everyone has to dance, dance dance,
    we don’t go home.
    dance, dance
dance, like that, like that, heigh-ho
    shake it, shake it
    like that, like that!
    sing, sing!
sing! like that, like that, heigh-ho!
    shout, shout!
    like that, like that
    heave-ho! heave-ho!4
    heave-ho! heave-ho!
    heave-ho! heave-ho!
    heave-ho! heave-ho!
the people asleep wake up and heigh-ho!
    heave-ho! heave-ho!
    heave-ho! heave-ho!
    heave-ho! heave-ho!
    heave-ho! heave-ho!
    everyone and anyone5 heigh-ho!
~~ you’re a fool if you dance, and a fool if you just look on, so let’s dance
but if you dance to also be a fool
    when you dance
do the metal, do the metal! ~~6
    heigh-ho
    heave-ho!
    ….
(shortened for translation, more heigh-ho and heave-ho follow until the end)
Paper horns blown into to celebrate:-
"These are shoutings used at traditional festivals. “sore” and “dokkoisho”. This is the same sore used in Megitsune.
lyrics sung during the Awa Odori festival. This is a farely long sentence translated but shorter in Japanese.
more shoutings used at traditional festivals. “wasshoi”.
the Japanese phrase used here literally translates to “the cats and bamboo lids also” which has the meaning of “everyone and anyone”
This part is spoken in a traditional way of japanese theater, called kabuki".
