Have you considered breaking these down into slightly more manageable chunks or else releasing them with a table of contents in order to skip around to the segments that are of particular interest? I know that I at any rate like to return to particular parts of videos because there were particular lines that I felt were insightful, something like a table of contents or breaking these long videos up would make finding those lines easier (for me at any rate)
One thing I have been concerned about in the 6Dmkii is night sky photography (ie, high ISO)s. The original 6D is still highly regarded to this day in terms of performance in astrophotography. Some preliminary things I have seen show worse performance in the mkii than the original. What are the odds we can get you to do some night time/night sky photos with the 6Dmkii to see how it performs at higher ISOs? 😅
Jared Polin Fantastic review, as always, Jared. You're the best on RUclips when it comes to real world reviews and probably the fairest reviewer of all in talking about the experience. Tony Northrup used to be similar, but he's turned into more of a spec-head these days and his so-called review of the 6DII was just an insult, quite frankly. He's lost track of his roots (what photography is all about). The 6DII is not for me, but it's a good camera and you did it justice and did a great job of highlighting the good and the bad. Keep up the excellent work, it's very much appreciated.
Nothing wrong with Tony's review. He is more on the spec-to-price review and is honest about it too. He reviews are especially in-depth and really help those who are budget tight when it comes to gear.
Just got this camera yesterday and took it out for a spin. I used to shoot on t6. Let me just say, if one cant take a great photo with this camera there's something more wrong than the camera. It's awesome!
My biggest takeaway from these real-world review videos (which are great, btw) is that the photographer matters so much more than the camera. Put a 1DX Mark II in my hands and a 100D in Jared's hands and set us both loose at the same event - and I am 100% sure that Jared will walk away with the better photos. Don't get me wrong - there are important differences between cameras and when you really *need* to upgrade it makes sense to do your homework. But for someone like me who already owns a decent camera + lenses, I would get much better results spending my time and money just getting out into a place with interesting subjects than I would if I upgraded my camera.
Jared, Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into these. You could easily sit in your studio and talk but you take it out and make shit happen. Keep doing what you're doing. I've been watching your videos since 2012 and since I've started my own videography business that is now my full time income. I thank you for your words, advice and personality.
I think the no headphone jack is whatever, if you're serious about doing audio anyways you'll have a separate recorder and headphones attached to that to monitor the audio. If you're just using a shotgun mic like a Rode on camera mic you're probably not gonna use headphones anyways. Just a 2 cents.
everybody is freaking out about focus points ...wtf people ...i will not speak for myself , but the best photographers i've met in my 20 years in photojournalism and magazine career ,only uses center point for ultimate control of focusing ..i own an original 6d as a back up camera ..have use it to cover olympics and other sport events...never missed a shot i wanted....just anticipate , try to "read' the scene and shoot the bloody picture
I own 6d too. It's a great camera but for the autofocus. Tried shooting birds in flight and I was sweating. The multi point AF was very hit and miss and kept picking up background, there is just too much air in between the points. The sensor and mechanics of the camera are great for the current price, no doubt but if you are shooting moving subjects you are down to old school methods, the camer is not helping you much. I can live with it as ana amateur but the number of photos I reject after inspection is high even if I shoot at f/8 to give the AF some leeway.
spiros51731 i had the 6d and honestly that’s the only thing i hated about the camera is the low number of focus points however i just got the 6ii and the reason being was so i would have more focal points
I never had issues focusing at events, shooting wildlife with my original 6D (still in use) and now that I have got used to it, the 6D mark ii is also brilliant focusing in a fast paced scene. Single point is often what I use
I have the Canon 5D mark IV and wanted a second camera for leisure so I wouldn't ruin my good camera. So I took the plunge on the 6D2 with low expectations and just wanting it for going camping and other more risky shoots where I wouldn't want to hurt the 5D4. I'm finding myself using this camera more and more. The image quality is nearly identical to the 5D4 in my opinion. And with the articulating screen I can do different angles. Now I take them both when I have a paid shoot so I don't have to swap lenses. When mounted with the Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 it works like a charm.
My sitch exactly. I have the 5DM4, love it but I didn't want to take it to all the risky places I go. I had my 70D but preferred the full frame. I tried the EOS-R but absolutely hated it. I sold it and grabbed up the 6DM2. I have zero regrets.
@@SunnySoCal I'm very happy with it. It feels just like the 5D, the controls are very much in the same places, so it just feels right. It's solid, but not too heavy. Full frame, articulating screen... it's a lot of camera for the price.
Little tip about the focus points. if the points dont spread out wide enough in the viewfinder, use the Dualpixel AF livescreen. it spreads out much much wider(almost to the edges) and is accurate.
Current pricing has the 6Dmkii at $1200.... so I am "upgrading" from my 5Dmkii. This new 6D has MUCH more dynamic range than my old 5D, and the current 5Div misses the mark for me, with a NON-articulating LCD display. While I'm sad about some of the compromises mentioned, I am excited to get this 6Dii for $1200!!
Great review! I bought this body as soon as it came out , and as an upgrade from the "original" 6D. As a landscape/macro photographer, I needed the fully articulated screen and the increase in megapixels. I don't care about frame rate, since I shoot carefully composed photos (i.e., SLOW), and I don't care about video (but yeah, the omission of 4K is dumb). I, too, read about the supposed deficiencies in regards to dynamic range, and in practice I found those complaints to be bullshit, and obviously made by people who are clueless. I do agree that the focus points clumped in the middle is stupid and a PITA to deal with, but this review never touched on shooting in Live View, which I do very often. In Live View, you can focus from edge to edge. My only other nit to pick with many reviews, including this one, is the whining about the single card slot. Seriously, how often do you all have a card fail? I've NEVER had that problem, even going back to cameras that used CF cards. I use high-quality cards, mostly SanDisk, and have never had a problem. So, the single card slot complaint is just silly.
Okay number one year landscape photographer you should never be concerned with Focus points you should know how to Zone Focus.. number two since when is SanDisk the best cards? Are you whining about not having 4K your eyes don't even see that way it's a headache.. most people don't even have the computer storage or processing to edit. I think it's Ansel Adams Ted take beautiful exposures without l live view I think you should be capable of that too.. you needed a fully articulating screen really you know some of the best landscape photography has been done with medium and large format last I checked there was no articulating screen
Yes, thank you for this video, this enabled me to make my final decision, I need to go from one body to two bodies to shoot with 2 lenses. I keep my 6D1 and I get the 6D2. The two main problem with 6D1 are : autofocus tracking of moving targets, and the lack of articulated screen. Those two are solved there, so BOOM. And now 3 years later it's just 1500$.
Hey Jared, you can recompose and use continuous focus. You just have to use the back button focus, release it and recompose. The shutter button will not focusing after that if it was deactivated on the shutter button. That what I do all the time with my 6D and all its focus points in the center of the viewfinder... I agree, recomposing is not the ideal way to do, but I deal with the gear I have... I use back button focus for years and I can't go back to the shutter button focus, that's so much more efficient...
I own a 1DX Mark II and I've got this camera as well. I am not a Canon fanboy, I also own gear from other brands like Fujifilm and Sony, it just happens that I really like Canon's system and reliability. They get the job done. I think the 6D Mark II it's a good and cheap FF Canon camera, Canon cameras are built like tanks and are easy to use all day. Is it perfect? No camera is, and Jared it's on point when he says that this is a business, I never expected the 6D2 to be a cheaper 5D4. If this is going to be your very first 2K camera you would probably consider other options depending on what you are shooting or interested to shoot or If you do video or not. But if you are a 6D user looking for an upgrade, 5D3 user looking for a second body or you have invested in Canon glass, don't be afraid of the bad reviews of this camera, Its really great, I'm liking it a lot, with the same friendly Canon ecosystem, same colors as my 1DX2, and like this photographer is saying, if you know it's limitations and know what you are doing you will get very good results giving you back your investment really fast since it's cheap. In order to judge this camera you have to put it against other $ 2K FF cameras and always try it on your own first. After all, we all have different needs, styles and workflows. Nice Review.
Uriel Santisteban To be honest. I'm strongly considering this camera because I love canon Glass. My only problem with this is the exclusion of the Dual card slot. it seems more of an underhanded move then negligence. But I'm not in a position to get a 5D model so it seems I don't have a choice.
Had mine for a year now. The only thing that genuinely bothers me is the viewfinder area. Beyond that, I love this camera and use it professionally every day. Seem to be a lot of "professionals" that only shoot manual and don't like handholding, but then complain about all the missing handholding features. hmmm.
Your real life reviews are my favourite reviews on RUclips! It's not all about specs, but about how you can apply what the camera can or can't do in the situation. Thanks so much for doing this series! :)
Lots of very valid points. It's the photographer not the camera. Stop worrying about specs and work on technique. My 6d is plenty good enough but as a semi-pro I need more than one camera. At about 2000 frames a week I worry about shutter life more than anything. All I can say is that compared to all my old film cameras and working in the dark room, life is simple now. Seems to me the biggest worriers about all this are Wedding Photogs that screw up and need the DR to save their ass. Ask about DR on Kodachrome 25. You had better understand about lighting with that, how to use gradient filters ON the camera, not in post! This camera looks like a good value to me and since I invested in Canon 12 yrs ago seems like the way to go-on a budget
I have a friend who is wedding photograph and he makes over 900.000 shots with the original 6D and the camera is still fine. His 6D II has about 500.000 shutters and is still fine as well. So don't be afraid, that your 6D have to much shutters. 😉🙏🍀 They are very robust.
Gee you talk a lot of sense, Jared .... and you take great photos, too. Really good review, thanks heaps! I've had my 6D II for a few weeks now and it's absolutely, in every way, perfect for me ... couldn't be happier!
That’s great to here! I know I’m late but I’m looking for a new camera and I’m really not sure wether to upgrade to the 6d mkii or the 5d mk iv. I’ve been doing photography for around 6 years so I feel I’m ready to make a big jump from my 700d to a full frame higher end camera. Is it worth the huge price difference between the 6d mk ii and 5d mk iv? I do wildlife and aviation photography and I’m not sure which one is best value for money 🤔
Thanks for the review Jared. These are the types of reviews we appreciate. Not some person holding the camera in their studio and talking about it in front of the camera. I appreciate you going out and really putting it through the real world testing. The fact that you're sharing the raw files for us to decide is a huge huge step up in reviewing cameras and gear. Thanks man!
I brought this camera, second hand, about two months ago. I purchased a Sigma 24-105 F/4 Art lens to use with it. I am enjoying it. It is a complement to my Canon EOS 90D.
At my age [71], I am going to buy this camera for my travel logs and home video. This will replace my 70D and I like the explanation you gave in many of the photo's. and the Pro's & Con's.
A few months after this review, this is still the best review of this camera. You are one of the few reviewers who actually understand the target market for this camera: consumers. The other reviewers bashed on this expecting that an entry-level consumer camera to perform on par with their pro level expectations.
What I do with the 6D is I use only servoAF and I remove AF from the half press shutter, then I depress the AF-on rear button while I need to focus. Of course I still have the problem with the only center point being capable, but I can recompose in a servoAF situation. Single shot AF really sucks in any moving target situation.
Awesome review as usual Jared, fair fun, and professional. I own the 6D mkII since the release date and extremely satisfied so far. I don't film, so I don't need 4k. For ME this is the perfect addition to my kit beside my 70D and the money invested in L lenses. And I have so much fun reading the iPhone photographers bashing it !!
Nice review. Concerning the "zone af" modes, consider that - by design - the camera tries to focus the nearest subject to the camera, in the selected area. This is mentioned also in the user manual. So, if the selected area covers a zone with objects at different distances from the camera, and you want to pinpoint the focus on a specific part of the frame, the zone af option is not always the best choice. Sadly, differently from other models, like 5d mark IV, 1dx mark II and 7d mark II, there is not the option to select a single af point, with the addition of a "cluster" of af points surrounding it (af point expansion), in the way that the camera begins to track from the selected af point, and automatically change the af point during the "af tracking". Concerning the area af coverage, for sure the 5d mark IV is better, but not by much. The 5d mark IV offers an additional column of af points per side, and you pass from a horizontal coverage of 38-40% to 53%. Consider that the 80d has a 62% horizontal af coverage, and on the 7d mark II is even better (70% and more). In every case, I think that the problem is due to the small size of the body: to use a larger af unit you need to upsize the secondary mirror, and this requires space. Indeed, the 5d mark IV is bigger and heavier. With an aps-c sensor you can use a much smaller af unit, to obtain the same coverage, and hence the size of the body is less relevant. For the same reason it is difficult to construct a viewfinder with 100% coverage, since the pentaprism and mirrors of the 6d mark II are much larger than those of an 80d, and the body sizes are very close. At least, if you want to maintain the camera body compact.
Zone AF ALWAYS focuses on the nearest point within the selected zone. The Canon equivalent of Nikon's Dynamic AF is AF Point expansion which is not available in this camera.
You continue to make me impressed by the 6D2. I almost exclusively use point auto focus, and almost always center weighted, in my style and preferred subject matter. I do not feel that the scrunched up AF points will be an issue, though I will miss the spread on my 80D, since I do occasionally use the zone AF (maybe 1 shot in 100). I am semi-pro, mostly an enthusiast gone crazy. I can not justify the cost of a 5D4, but the 6D2 is an attractive prospect to start getting into full frame. I may take a closer look at the new 90D when it releases and I can put hands on later this month.
Good review. However a point: saying that 1/8000s for shutter speed is found in more expensive gear is absolutely wrong, since it is found in smaller bodies such as the 70D, the 80D and the 7D mark II. So why, since they are a business, would they offer less (yet relatively smaller, but still smaller) features than the lower bodies that cost half the price if not the same? Yes, I get it's an "entry-level", but it's still a 2000 dollars camera, not a 350 dollars with rebates.
Giuseppe Pipia APS-C shutters have to travel less distance to cover the frame, hence it is a bit simpler to have higher flash sync speeds (ie 1/250) and faster shutter speed (ie 1/8000) without the more advanced designs of the FF shutter
Oh come on! Like it is something very difficult to manufacture! If it were present only on the 1DX then yes, I'd agree with you, but not on this case, since the shutter mechanism is pretty much IDENTICAL for any full-frame camera. They just have to do some messing around. Not talking about flash-sync speeds, but also that 1/180 is ridiculous, since they could have done it easily to 1/200, updating it from the 6D mark I, instead keeping it the same.
The Sony A7II has 1/8000 shutter speed and it is their entry level FF camera. Plus it has more features and a better and faster focus point spread across the sensor for $500 less than this junk.
For the shutter to go 'faster', the 2nd curtain just has to start earlier. This renders your shutter speed/time. Now if you want to eliminate rolling shutter effect for as far as possible, the curtains have to travel faster at short shutter times. But that is something that only becomes visible with very fast moving objects.
He never said it was only in expensive cameras. Its just the way you choose to hear it. He said it is in expensive cameras. that doesn't exclude none expensive cameras. Listen to it again.
Many thanks for cool and good video explanation, need your help, taking into consideration limits of my budget I have some difficulties to choose, I stay between 6D mark II and Canon 90D, which one you can recommend? I know that 6D mark II full frame and 90D is crop sensor... I will be focused to photo and video 50/50... which one you can recommend? 6D mark II or 90D? Many thanks in advance
Hi Jared. Thanks for the great YT channel. When you say the 6DMKii has old technology, are you mostly referring to the lack of 4K? Is it also the use of an 80D AF system that isn't sized to the larger sensor? Is there something else that's not current? I think I could live with these 2 deficiencies. I have no desire to have a hybrid digital camera anyway. I just want a photo setup. My current camera is an EOS Elan 7E film SLR. I've been using Provia and Ecktachrome E100 in it. So I might not miss the dynamic range that the 6DMKii lacks. And I usually use lock focus and recompose, since the Elan 7E only has 7 focusing points. But I do hate shelling out $1,400 for an out of date camera body. A big plus toward this camera for me is that I have a very nice Sigma 28-105 f/2.8-4 aspherical lens that I won't part with. So much so that I will wait until Canon comes out with something I'll be happy with and stick with my Elan until then (market shrinkage). Another thing I like about the 6DMKii is that it isn't top heavy with buttons and features. But the price needs to come down, or is that the price of admission to the inexpensive world of digital photography? I bought a $400 scanner recently, so that has me putting on the brakes as well. To sum up, is this the camera for me ($1000 - $1500) or should I be patient?
Just upgraded my 6D to 6Dii, was gonna get song 7aiii but switching all my lenses to sony is CRAZY expensive. going 6Dii from 6D makes sense financially, plus it does what i want it to do :) flippy screen, full frame, good AF.. 4K and All-I would have been nice but o well!
Great review. Finally a real life review Instead of a "pixel peeping" review. I love how people expect the 5D MK4 in a 6D MK2 body at the 6D MK2 price. I see this all the time. Watch the Nikon entry full frame users will now want the new 850D in the entry level camera!! Canon, Nikon, etc., all have to make differences between models. The great thing is for buyers, if you don't like the camera you have a lot of choices to buy something that you think is great. For those who missed all the 5D MK4 things you can just buy the 5D4 or even an old 5D3 camera and stop knocking a camera you don't even own.
I agree a thousand percent on the statement that a Photographer makes the camera. If you are a good photographer, you can make it work. I am a tweaker anyway. always adjusting my work. I need the full frame sensor as a starting point. Thanks for the great review.
Great review Jared! So many bad reviews out there of this camera, and they all focus on tech specs. But I like how you bring all the negative hype down a notch by consistently reminding us that skill is, at the very least, as important as the gear we use. I think you did a great job with this review and I whole heartedly agree that most critics are blowing this more out of proportion than maybe it should be. For me personally, the biggest negative is the price. I would be happy to pay 1300, maybe even up to 1500, for this camera, but 2000 is the only thing holding me back. Other than that, I would be content with the pros and cons of this camera for a more reasonable price. Thanks for the review, best I have seen yet for the 6DMii!
Noticing the reds are oversaturated, especially on skintones. Have you noticed a big difference in color rendition between this camera and other Canon models?
Jared, I really like and appreciate your real world reviews. I think people get very hung up on specifications versus how workable the camera is in actual use. I also appreciate that you just tell it like it is... the good and the bad... without coming across as brand biased. I think that the truth is that most of the full frame offerings from any manufacturer these days likely outperforms anything we photographers can do anyway. I have the Canon 5D IV and I know without a doubt it is a more capable piece of equipment than I am capable as a photographer.
nice review, I got this camera a few weeks back. I have gotten some great shots with it and some super grainy abominations. It's my first full frame and I'm still learning it. Overall if you're on the fence and are watching videos to see if you should just pull the trigger. You will be happy.
Amazing review! thank you very much. I´m using a 70D, and I´m thinking on this camera to upgrade my quality. What do you think? does it worth the investment? Thank you and cheers from Uruguay!
BIG Thanks to you, for the detailed 'Real World' testing of 6D mark II, really helpful for ppl like us who might think of upgrading from the current APSc sensor. And sharing of the RAW Files helps in clarifying all the speculations and also giving us an idea of how much of an improvement this one wud be.
One can argue that the 6D2 is good as in "good enough". But the question should rather be what camera offers more for the money. What camera is the best buy? The 6D2 has similar DR as the much cheaper 80D where the 80D has more spread out AF points. Buying a used 5D3 can also be a better choice depending on your priorities, not to mention the other brands.
Marek Bartnik Why shouldn't they be compared if they have similar image quality? The only thing that differs is the angle of view and depth of field given a lens. I've seen 5D3s at 8000 exposures (as good as new) for about $1500, which should be enough to motivate people to consider it as an option.
Marek Bartnik Whatever your personal opinion is on used cameras doesn't dictate whether someone else might find a used camera with better IQ a better choice. It's up to everyone to decide for him/herself. And no, full frame is not always superior. The 6D2 has older tech than the 80D, which makes them comparable in terms of IQ. It's in fact the lenses that makes all the difference, not the sensor.
Oscar Baez Soria, yes, given the SAME lens at the same aperture. But with an equivalent lens (larger aperture than FF lenses) you get exactly the same IQ. Watch Tony and Chelsea's videos and you'll know what I talk about. Also, sensor generation matters. I doubt that a 5D original beats a 80D for instance. Size isn't everything.
Jared, seriously considering ditching the 6D for the 6D Mark II purely because of it's improved Auto Focus, would you agree on this? I'm finding the 6D is missing focus even with fast L series lens and is more susceptible to back focusing in certain landscapes.
Great review! I just bought this camera! My last camera had a fixed 50mm lens, 6 focus points (I think it had that many) and 6.3 Mpixel sensor. Its easy for us to forget that SLR's were fully manual 'Stills' cameras with no auto focus or electronics for decades before the digital age. Its only recently people started relying on them for video too. I'm blown away by them having GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi. Now if we can just make a zoom lens for under a $1,000! 😀
About the lack of joy stick though, you can actually scroll the AF point up down with you thumb using the back dial, while scroll the AF point left right with your index finger, using the top dial. Which is much faster than the joy stick. The reasoning is, say, if you want to move an AF point 5 steps to the left with a joy stick, you need to press and release 5 time. But with the dial, you just slide the dial 5 clicks in 1 single stroke. Working with you thumb together with your index finger on the fly is faster than clicking with you thumb alone. You just need some time to get used to it.
I still shoot with the (old) 6D and I absolutely love it. Even now in 2018 with so many new camera's on the market. At some point you realize you can make almost every shot you need (and I have to say, the 20Mpix of the Eos 6D are more than enough for 99% of the things I shoot). Oke, heavy cropping might be a problem with 20Mpix compared to the many 40+ Megapixel DSLR/Mirrorless camera's but the good thing is that it will force you to go closer to the subject faster because you know you can't crop so much in post (and it depends on how big you want to print your photo's in the end ofcourse).
I have the 6D2 for a month (coming from the original 6D). I love it. Easy and quick to use. I do not care for vdo (my iPhone has 4K ...). For still photos it's perfect. Each camera has its pros and cons, but I 'm a simple amateur and it seems to me when I read all the anti 6D2 comments, that everybody's a professional photographer, which I am not. So , 6D2 is a very good gear. And my ambition is not to move up tu 5D4 but rather to go for a 7D mk3 as a second body. Cheers ! (NB : I move Canon Glasses ...).
what's the point showing retouched images and called it real world review. when you purchase this camera it does not come with photoshop skills as well
"Retouching" and post-processing RAW files is not the same thing. None of the portraits have been retouched. Having stated that, the processing of the samples is so heavy-handed that a lot of information about tone and color are being buried. I re-processed some of the RAW files. I was not impressed.
Petru B. Because you would retouch/ grade in the real world, if youre just taking the files out of the camera and uploading them to facebook then get a simple point and shoot lol. Dont come just to complain
Kiran Bharadia lol, show me a raw unedited file , i want to see the real contrast and sharpness not a filter output. I can crank up the settings or shoot hdr, but that got nothing to do with performance of the camera
also, Reuters has implemented a new worldwide policy for freelance photographers that bans photos that were processed from RAW files. but you know nothing about that because you are just an amateur.
I like it. Show the end result and not a bunch of flat ugly jpegs. Also, if one has money for this camera one knows how to edit and evaluate edited images.
Something I noticed (and that bugs me about my current Canon - a 60D) is that when you showed us the files in your Studio you always had to crank up shadows by 20+ points and reduce the bright lights by at least -10 points in each and every shot in order to get a good picture. Why is that? Is this a Canon thing or a general thing? Why can't one get proper, more balanced exposure of pictures out of these cameras? Could you comment on this?
My first full frame on a tight budget? Jared here is one big thank you for an honest & balanced review. There are better cameras if the budget was flexible, I’d choose Nikon today. I’ve Started with Canon and have gathered a few lens and accessories. After the many troubling reviews posted the mark ii prices have been beaten down. I found one for $1200 new. 6D mark ii for $1200 and I said “sold” after seeing that you could get some nice shots with nice colors and enough dynamic range. 👍
Aww, man. I was just at the Ren Faire the other weekend. Must have missed you by a week. Keep making the quality vids - I've learn a lot from you in the past few years!
I just bought one of these used for £850 with 5600 shutters actuations... so basically new. The shutter on my 6D MK 1 failed a couple days ago and I needed a working camera ASAP cause I do some professional work. I'm looking forward to using this, I use back-button focus so the issue with focus points probably won't affect me much. I heard about the 'issue' with dynamic range after buying the camera which is a little bit of a let-down, but realistically probably won't be much of a problem. I'm hoping to get some good use from this upgrade. Thanks for the great video, this was very informative and provided me some additional confidence in this camera body.
Jared Polin I'm looking at the grain for ISO2500. Im not saying it's bad, just looks to be more noise than my Fuji's. I shoot a D750 too and the cropped sensor Fuji's compare very well. I think up to 6400 where I shoot the FX / DX gap is negligible now.
The 5d Mark IV's 4k is pretty much not usable. In these reviews, I wish you guys would take photos at sunset where you are pointing at the setting sun so the sky is completely white or the ground is completely dark and see how the camera brings it back when you have to bring it back by more than 2 stops. My d750 does very well at that, I want to see how the 6d Mark II does.
I saw a post that said this camera has touch focus on the vari-angle screen that is anywhere on the screen. I didn't hear you mention that. Is that because it doesn't work?
One advantage of mirrorless cameras like the latest Fujis - they have an electronic shutter which goes up to 1/32,000s - you can shoot f1.2 on a sunny day and be okay. If that's what you need in a camera ...
Great review Jared Polin, but I do wish you would give a little more of your opinions you were a tad diplomatic in places and I got the impression you were holding back. Was waiting for this camera but have been so disappointed with the reviews and it had put me off. Am primarily a landscape photographer so the dynamic range issue is a concern as i quite often pull shadows in a single image and don't want to have to bracket. But then I came to a realisation, I'm coming from a 60d from which I have always gotten good results, the 6d mark ii has to be a good improvement on that right? Would appreciate your opinion thanks
Gee, for god sake, this camera is bad compared to the competitors. Its not a BAD camera, but if you compare to whats in the market, its just meh. Not enough contrast in the images to test teh dynamic range. Dynamic range is something you dont care until you care. Overcast day isnt a really problem to most cameras, too much light bouncing around.
Needs a 1 frame to get a good photo in action (sports) but you are not a professional sports photographer. You shot Hockey, you have a camera that shoots 12 fps and you know how important fps are important to predict some shots. Try shooting a professional sports event that you need to nail the shots. I shoot with a 5d mk iii and 7d mk ii (sold 7d mk ii), and it was muuuuuuuuuuuuch easier to get the moments on the 7d mk ii, than on 5d mk iii in soccer. For other sports I can handle very well the slow fps on 5d mk iii, but in soccer I find that 10-12 fps is a must.
Jared, you joust! I learn something every time I watch your videos... I have an ancient 5D Mk II and am invested in Canon glass. This seems like a very logical upgrade for me... Where do you recommend I look for the best price on this body?
If you are coming from a 5D II (as I was) you will love it. Apparently though, this reason is not acceptable to some people. If a camera does not behave like a 5,000 dollar camera for 2,000, it sucks and that is all that matters. All the entitled negative vitriol on RUclips gets exhausting.
Maxim Muir , thanks for your input and definitely appreciate hearing from a 5D Mk II owner... I am looking for improvements in the ability to shoot at higher ISOs as I shoot with available light. It appears that improvements have been made as far as noise is concerned. Jared's complaint about the zone autofocus is justified. I tried it long on my 5D and it didn't work properly. However, the follow focus on the 6D will make shooting live action much better than my 7 year old 5D! Once you nail it on the first shot that is... To Jared Polin, I learn something EVERY TIME I watch you videos! My photography skill level was elevated after I bought the 'Getting Out of Auto' video in December 2013... I've been shooting RAW since!
@Mark Jones-from my limited tests in high ISO, ISO 12,800 is a touch better than ISO 3200 on the 5DII, and it definitely does not have the purple blooming in the shadows @6400 like the 5D mark II exhibited, so that performance should please you very much. I do see purple blooming creeping into 25,600, but I doubt I will ever push it that far. Regarding "poor dynamic range" at low ISO. This does not phase me, since most of my shooting is tripod bound, so I routinely do 5 bracketed shots -2, -1, 0, +1, and +2 for everything in live view in high speed burst, and I can either process the balanced shot, or blend all five. I never want my shots to have a flat HDR look, so I always process back in some deep shadows, but it gives me flexibility. And yes, I know it can't be used for moving subjects, but that has been my established shooting style since the days of 4x5 view cameras that I used to shoot. Tripod adverse people who insist on 15 stops of dynamic range should look elsewhere, instead of being resentful that Canon did not give you a 5,000 dollar camera for 2,000 dollars. The articulating screen is a dream come true for a tripod bound shooter like me, and the touch DP autofocus is great. Yes, I am fully away of all the complained about limitations-if Canon had included an articulating screen on a 5D mark IV, I probably would have gone that route, but they didn't, and so here I am enjoying the camera anyway. Mark, if you want to see samples from a non celebrity, you can check out these recent shoots of mine with the 6D Mark II: anscochrome.zenfolio.com/p207514531 anscochrome.zenfolio.com/p110793138 anscochrome.zenfolio.com/p185139854 anscochrome.zenfolio.com/p757138859
Short way to say Canon's two camera's are just embarrassment. I mean 5D m4 and 6D m2, this is not what we hoped for. Just take look in to Nikon D750(3 years old camera) and D850. That's what Canon should be realising, not this ....
Just a quick heads up regarding the ISO issue you brought up. You can set the lock button below the rear dial to deactivate the touchscreen, so you don't inadvertently change settings.
I think he actually did a great job of showing what the camera can actually do quality wise. Not very many are doing that and sticking to stat sheets rather than showing us the goods.
Monroe Tolbert man...is beaten by a aps-c camers in dynamic range 80d, its price is higher than nikon equivalent with little specks after 4 years (d750) , im not bias-ing Frono...i like the dude...i just think its a rip off camera to the Canon customers!
Hi Jared. I bought the Canon 80D and was not really satifyed with the pictures, so i upgraded to the Canon 6D mark 2. Do you think it is a good choise?? I also just got the Tamron 24-70 mm f2.8 VC G2. I know that the Canon 6D mark 2 does not have 4k, but I only really care about the image quality
Here's to making "Real World Reviews" where you use the camera and supply you guys with files to determine if it's for you or not.
I want a side by side shootout with the 5d Mark IV. I did one with the D750, but I don't have a 5d Mark IV to do with.
You're a very humble dude
Jared, Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into these. You could easily sit in your studio and talk but you take it out and make shit happen. Keep doing what you're doing. I've been watching your videos since 2012 and since I've started my own videography business that is now my full time income. I thank you for your words, advice and personality.
+FhornPatrick thank you for the positivity.
Why don't you just buy a black magic and stop expecting a Stills camera to make professional movies with
if the footage can look good... if it autofocuses well, why bother? specially for people who aint passionate or video nerds...
everybody is freaking out about focus points ...wtf people ...i will not speak for myself , but the best photographers i've met in my 20 years in photojournalism and magazine career ,only uses center point for ultimate control of focusing ..i own an original 6d as a back up camera ..have use it to cover olympics and other sport events...never missed a shot i wanted....just anticipate , try to "read' the scene and shoot the bloody picture
word!!
The Original 6D is still current, just know its limitations. I still use mine, I can't find anything that much better to encourage me to switch.
spiros51731 i had the 6d and honestly that’s the only thing i hated about the camera is the low number of focus points however i just got the 6ii and the reason being was so i would have more focal points
When mounted with the Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 it works like a charm.
the image quality is very similar, people started commenting before having it.
Hi Tom, do you still feel the same way?
My sitch exactly. I have the 5DM4, love it but I didn't want to take it to all the risky places I go. I had my 70D but preferred the full frame. I tried the
EOS-R but absolutely hated it. I sold it and grabbed up the 6DM2. I have zero regrets.
Scott Bowen would you say it’s still worth getting thinking about grabbing it with the 50mm new for $1300 ?
@@SunnySoCal I'm very happy with it. It feels just like the 5D, the controls are very much in the same places, so it just feels right. It's solid, but not too heavy. Full frame, articulating screen... it's a lot of camera for the price.
Just wanted to let everybody know: I got myself a used Canon 6D Mark II and loving it.
Little tip about the focus points. if the points dont spread out wide enough in the viewfinder, use the Dualpixel AF livescreen. it spreads out much much wider(almost to the edges) and is accurate.
This. Works fantastic on my 90D when needed!
Focus and recompose: do you really want to relay on the autofocus system to guess what's to be in focus? I WANT to chose what's in focus.
Bet you also want to miss the majority of shots and be slightly out of focus 90% of the time :)
Uriel Santisteban is single card slot is a big problem??
@@Rudra27394 Remember the days when you had just one roll of film loaded into the one camera? How did we survive?
Had mine for a year now.
The only thing that genuinely bothers me is the viewfinder area.
Beyond that, I love this camera and use it professionally every day.
Seem to be a lot of "professionals" that only shoot manual and don't like handholding, but then complain about all the missing handholding features. hmmm.
Your real life reviews are my favourite reviews on RUclips! It's not all about specs, but about how you can apply what the camera can or can't do in the situation. Thanks so much for doing this series! :)
9:40 bc they totaly had carbon fiber basses in the Renaissance time
Lots of very valid points.
@@alexandergrafvonrothenstein Mine made it to 200k and needed a new shutter. Have it for another 2 yrs.
With my old 80D I learned very simply to grab the focal point and recompose- actually helped composition.
How did it do??? Download RAW files here froknowsphoto.com/6d2/
Jared Polin You are best RUclipsr ever !!!
Jared Polin Thank you for providing the Raw-files. They really show what's going on inside that Sensor. Thanks Jared!
Great review, Jared!
Don't know what is worse, the 2010 sunglasses or the blueish/purple edits.
Šta ga zajebavaš Davide :)
8:38 “horizonticals”
Ashton Wadsworth and several more times after that lol
Lol anyone else catch the tiny white bugs crawling around the camera at 7:30?
Ha Yeah realized that after I filmed it, was freaking out thinking they were on me after viewing the footage
Yeah I started smashing my computer screen because I thought it was on it!
There are some in Jared's hair now, plenty of room ;)
This is what happens at a renaissance fair. Everyone in the medieval times had body lice so why not the camera also. Straight up nasty!
+ObelixCMM that shady ass joke 😂😂😂😂but I still love me some JP over Tony cockiness; JP all the way.
Gee you talk a lot of sense, Jared .... and you take great photos, too. Really good review, thanks heaps! I've had my 6D II for a few weeks now and it's absolutely, in every way, perfect for me ... couldn't be happier!
thank you.
Thanks man!
thanks. I've been sharing raw files for years at this point.
I'm not 100% sold on this camera. I do want to upgrade, but I'm wondering if it would be better to keep saving money for a 5Div instead.
opwave79 what’d you end up doing? I’m struggling with this right now, also with choosing this, or the 5diii
@@CharlotteGottfried Same here with me, not sure if i should get this or 5d mark iii but 5D mark iii is 7years old camera in 2019
You are like one of the very rare people who shares actual RAW files. Much appreciated.
I brought this camera, second hand, about two months ago. I purchased a Sigma 24-105 F/4 Art lens to use with it. I am enjoying it. It is a complement to my Canon EOS 90D.
Great review! It's nice to hear other comments about the 6DII instead of complaining about the DR
At my age [71], I am going to buy this camera for my travel logs and home video. This will replace my 70D and I like the explanation you gave in many of the photo's. and the Pro's & Con's.
73 agora (2020) 👍🇧🇷
I appreciate you shooting with all these different cameras for the viewers.
One of the more logical and practical reviews I've ever seen. Focusing on real world results and not just specs is so much more helpful. Good job man!
A few months after this review, this is still the best review of this camera. You are one of the few reviewers who actually understand the target market for this camera: consumers. The other reviewers bashed on this expecting that an entry-level consumer camera to perform on par with their pro level expectations.
hmm ive a 70D and im thinking of an upgrade but im not shure if i should buy a 6Dii or a 90D. what do u think?
I dunno about the camera but the production quality of these videos are over 9000. And I love how you edit things...
Finally an honest review of the 6Dii, not based in tech BS. This camera simply gets the job done.
Ricardo Villagran Vicent yes it does ! I own it and I’m happy with it .
Jared thanks for the great work with this camera! You are one of the best RUclipsrs in photograph of the Worldwide. Thanks a lot.
Matthias has some thing to say about that
31:57 wasn't the af system (multicam 3500 dx) used to some extent in the d4/d4s, d750, d800/d800e, and d810 as well as the d7200 and d7500?
The Canon equivalent of Nikon's Dynamic AF is AF Point expansion which is not available in this camera.
perfect video!
thanks to you, I could make my choice.
I just bought the 6D mark ii!
Especially that it is now at 1100 € new! :D
I'm about to buy this camera, worth it?
Nice pictures of the glass blowing. Always nice to find unique subjects
thanks Robert.
Great review as usual! I guess I'll stick to my original 6D and original 5D mkII for now!
Have you noticed a big difference in color rendition between this camera and other Canon models?
i wish you would list the gear you used to shoot this video :)
True. The quality is a screaming hell yes
It's a Nikon D5
Nikon D5
11-24mm, 70-200
fat lip asked for video.... your gear list is for photos!
Dude this is why I like your videos, you tell it how it is. Your not bias, just telling facts and what you've experienced with the cameras you review.
Andres, it is two years later. How did the 6D Mii work out for you? Thanks...Rich
Just picked up a mint 6d ii for under 1k in 2019 as an upgrade for my 60d. Awesome camera!
This is where I'm coming from as well!
Using 60D too and thinking on upgrading to 6D2.
Under 1k? Where? Help me. =)
I just bought one to replace my 60D too 😁
I replaced my ancient 350D with it and oh my god..
Sorry, the sensor is VERY important in IQ. A FF has better IQ than a crop, given the same lenses. So you are indeed INCORRECT.
9:30 Cello made from the finest medieval carbonfibre!
Jared, seriously considering ditching the 6D for the 6D Mark II purely because of it's improved Auto Focus, would you agree on this? I'm finding the 6D is missing focus even with fast L series lens and is more susceptible to back focusing in certain landscapes.
Why the images look so unnatural? Is it your editing?
Maybe it's your screen.
René G The contrast is turned very high in post.
That's his style of editing, high contrast and saturated colors
Too much contrast.
You can see his contrast slider in Lightroom is like 70+
Great review! 😀
Sigma 150-600mm F5,0-6,3 DG OS HSM Contemporary is a great one under 1000 bucks. Depends on what you want tbh. He got a great review on that Lens too
Renaissance fair is perfect place for 6Dmk2, new and old at the same time 😁
About the lack of joy stick though, you can actually scroll the AF point up down with you thumb using the back dial, while scroll the AF point left right with your index finger, using the top dial.
Yes, it is an entry level FF, but isn't an entry level camera
Saint Claire Yeah Canon has entry level cameras for a few hundred bucks
Saint Claire i shot photos with 6d i and it looked just as good as Mark 3
It was only lasted about a year before it was replaced 6DMARK2 2017 and EOS-R 2018.
Was this video shot with the 6d mark ii?
A little late but it has been shot with the D5 as said at 4:20 😀
what's the point showing retouched images and called it real world review.
when you purchase this camera it does not come with photoshop skills as well
"Retouching" and post-processing RAW files is not the same thing.
Hey Jared. Amateur photographer here. What the thing in the hotshoe? Thanks.
Finally❤️... Waited for so long for this video!!!❤️
hope you enjoyed it.
27:46 It's called a lance.. hello!
Lol, love this movie
ruclips.net/video/NbDJECWjDcU/видео.html - I thought the EXACT same thing when i just watched this...
If anybody happens to find my comment or fro himself would you still recommend this camera in 2019 for portraits & landscapes at $1300 ?
If you find it at something around 1000 (you can also find it cheaper) you make a deal
Aww, man. I was just at the Ren Faire the other weekend. Must have missed you by a week. Keep making the quality vids - I've learn a lot from you in the past few years!
I really enjoy Jared's real world reviews. I even watch them for cameras that I would never even remotely consider buying. Like this one.
thanks.
Jared please what about a review on the 90d
Nice one for pointing out the shared 9 stop dynamic range with the D5.
You said it yourself Jared, no dual card slots. This is a no go for me, especially at this price.
What did you mean by "if you want more weather resistance, look at the 5D MkII"...where does the 6D MKII fail?
The images are noisier than my Fuji Xpro2......FF is losing its benefits IMO....
huh? I had no issue with noise.
*"Horizontical"* - Jared 2017
Hi Jared! How would you compare the 6d mkii to the 77d for still images?
That is some aweful amateur postprocessing.
Wiktor Kasz the point was to show how much you can do not how well he’s not selling the pictures neither sharing them in social media
I saw a post that said this camera has touch focus on the vari-angle screen that is anywhere on the screen. I didn't hear you mention that. Is that because it doesn't work?
I have the original 6d and 1/4000sec + f1.4 + bright sunshine = 😑🔫
you know they sell ND filters right?
get an ND filter and you're set! :)
Eupix nd filter. Nothing is going to save you at f1.4. Can't blame the camera on that one
It sucks at 1/8000 too on my 5dmkiv even at 50iso..In fact , without ND filter , every camera fail at this game.
I agree. Hopefully the D850 sparks competition so consumers win. Why can't they do what the 5d MK ii and 1DX MK ii have done to the market. Shame
Fuck nikon!
Just a quick heads up regarding the ISO issue you brought up. You can set the lock button below the rear dial to deactivate the touchscreen, so you don't inadvertently change settings.
Sorry...you didnt convinced me...you were trying hard to look good this camera
He's giving an honest review. He didn't seem biased at all.
UH82NVME that is your opinion...can i have mine differently?
You most certainly can. However, commenting on a live public forum invites the opposition.
