We currently shoot weddings with a 5d4, a7r3, and 1dxmk2. The best tracking, focus, and reliable images are still the from the 1dxmk2. Still get more keepers from the 5d4 with the 24-70ii vs the a7r3 with the GM 24-70, but most likely due to the ability to fine tune focus points on the fly faster in the DSLRs. Favorite camera to use for stills is definitely the Sony. I can't wait for the next evolution in mirrorless, but for now I need the the ability to adapt to changing conditions of weddings and nothing does it better for me than the 1dxmk2. I have used the a9 and I still have trouble switching settings at the speed of the cannon. Missing a shot can be everything, that's where the 1d and d5 prove their worth

    • @michaelscoots

You can't beat the speed of the 1D X series - and overall ergonomics of the 1D series. As a wedding photographer, I find I can get my focus point and shutter there quicker in changing conditions with the 1D series than anything else out there.

Lower on the totem pole, but that is exactly why I am switching from GX8 to 6Dmkii. The Lumix has tons of great features and so many custom buttons... but the camera size would only fit a child’s hands well, unfortunately. And I always feel overwhelmed. Whereas my last EOS film camera was a dream to use.

Really love these comparison videos! One thing I think would be a great addition is a chart at the end showing which cameras won in which fields, as well as the total amount of checkmarks accumulated by each camera. These videos cover so many specs that sometimes it’s hard to keep track of exactly which areas a camera did well in, and there might be specs that are more important to some people than others. Keep up the amazing work!

I'm using 6D mkII as when I bought it Canon's mirrorless was just a gossip, and to be honest I would buy it again as RP doesn't seem to be as good (but is cheaper so I'm not sure) and R is too expensive. But I need to point that 6D II has built in bluetooth and GPS and you can select focus point on the back of LCD by just moving your thumb around the screen. Also you can use Canon Camera Connect app exactly same way you can use it with 5DmkIV. I don't think this are game changing features but probably worth mentioning. Anyway cool video and thanks for making it.

As an amature nerd that doesn't do video, the R would have been the dream, but at a $1,000 more without a good eye AF, the RP is a no brainier. I just got the RP yesterday with the RF 24 to 105... struggled deciding between the combo or the R at this price, but I don't have a lot of EF glass. But this glass is amazing..super sharp, super fast focus....the RP is a great camera.

Since the Canon 5div and 6dii are part of this video, those are the cameras to look at first. Why? Because they won't be around for very long and the mirrorless cameras will be. Maybe not the exact models but a version of them. If you want/need a dslr get them while you can. Lens mount is a consideration. Think about those features you really want or need. You may not really need a given feature or miss a given feature.
Respectfully, not all cameras need video. If your business requires video, OK you do. But there are those of us who shoot only stills. Video capabilities don't just come along for free. Though it may seem so. Having video as part of the feature set, likely effects the mix, ie. you may miss out on something you woud prefer as a result of video being included.
Finally, "if you know what you are doing." Your right, Jared.

I'm saving for the Canon R with grip and control ring adapter. I've invested in quality EF glass and like the idea I don't need to micro adjust mirrorless body for my lenses. I'm upgrading from 6D II, which is a great body within reason but the AF capabilities of mirrorless and accuracy of focus point positioning vs actual focus point position matching due to EVF is what has sold me, not to mention RF glass options. I found my optical VF with 98% coverage was focusing slightly above the actual displayed focus rectangle in VF, which totally sucks when trying to nail focus with shallow DOF, and contrast detect focus seemed to trump my phase detect focusing with DSLR technology. That's why Canon R seems a worthwhile choice for me, even though I fear that if I buy now, Canon will launch a pro R body that will leave me wishing I'd waited.

Jarod, I know you’re a very busy guy. I want to say firstly, I highly enjoy your content, and ability to break things down. I’m a little lost in a choice. I’ve been doing a huge amount of research. I started my career with the canon eos 7d. I started with it with the mentality I would learn everything I could, and push my camera to its complete limits. Small portrait sessions, big, even a couple weddings, and between the camera and really good editing, with my skill set now, I’ve achieved gorgeous images, but I’ve done what I set out to do. Push my camera to its max. A big problem is low light (dynamic range) coming back from shadows etc. it falls apart at like 3500 iso. I know my camera is way out of date and with my thought process, I was thinking about jumping into an rp for a year, and saving next season to make an r5 my main, and rp backup. So I’m thinking rp main 7d back up. Do u have any sort of advice. Yes I’m on a budget atm. I’ve seen so much hate on the rp, but it looks like a huge upgrade from my favorite dinosaur. Interested in ff, and expanding my wedding capabilities. I’m a firm believer it’s the man behind the specs more than the specs alone, but yes, it’s a time for an upgrade. Any help would be appreciated

I'd say the RP or the R are the best ones for me. I couldn't care less for video, I enjoy macro, architecture and landscape (in that order), so it would be hard for anybody to distinguish between a still and a video. And I really like the smaller size.
Coming from that, the RP doesn't offer too much additional value to justify the price, except for the higher resolution. However, this is a big advantage for macros. Hmm...

  • @MarkPMus

I love the 6D M2 and the 7D2 as well. The 7D2 is great with a long zoom lens like the Tamron 70-300 for street photography, because you can be a long way from your subject and still get the benefit of the crop factor (eg about 420mm on the above lens). Its 65pt auto focus will still allow a lot of coverage of the frame and allow for rule-of-thirds style portraits. On the other hand, the 6D2 maybe will need a little cropping with street photography and you have to be a little closer to your subject. In very busy places, with a 24-105 lens such as the Sigma, you need to be a little nearer your subject, but even if you have to allow for the 45 pt auto-focus in editing and crop a wee bit, the resolution is still about 25 megapixels. More than the 7D2. The 6D2 is fabulous though, for portraits and for subjects such as architecture and landscapes, that can't answer back and ask, "Why are you taking my photograph?" If you have time to frame your subject, the 6D2 will always give the best results. My answer to those who point to either camera's slightly out of date video capabilities is, can you really tell the difference between 1080p and 4k? Especially when viewed on an iPad or even a 27" i-Mac? I would guess that in blind testing, the answer would be no in either scenario. The 6D2 and 7D2 have video capabilities that will thrill anyone moving from their mobile phone - even if that has 4K. As Jared points out, it's the glass in front of the camera, and even the kit lenses associated with an APS-C (18-55mm), will give much better results than a tiny piece of plastic on a mobile that has been stuffed in a handbag or pocket, and has never been cleaned.

What do you think will give me the best picture quality? Canon EOS RP, m6 mark ii or Nikon Z5. I'm only interested in taking photos, jpegs. I'm a casual shooter, I'm into street photography, portraits, sunsets, etc No action photography or video. I'd be using one of these cameras with a kit lens, at least for the first year. I know their specs on paper, I know that Nikon has got in-body stabilization, two card slots, weather sealing. But I won't be shooting to make money at weddings or in bad weather. Based on the sample pictures I've seen online, Nikon and m6 seem to produce sharper looking jpegs. I do like to crop, so the amount of detail matters to me. I've held all three camera in a store, and the RP felt best in my hands. Btw, I'll be stepping up from Panasonic G7, and the RP isn't much heavier or bigger. But again, it seems that the photos it produces are not as good as the other two. Your advice please.

I only shoot stills so the video capabilities are not important at all to me, I shoot architecture and have a TS-E 17mm as my main lens for internals and externals. I now use a 6D mk2 as (previously had 1Ds in 2003 to 2006 then 5Dmk1 from 2006 to 2018! Still works never failed me, would love to see the shutter count.) I need a second body for location shoots so I don't need to swap lenses, after all the reviews I have just purchased the EOS R as offers everything I currently have but up a level. (The articulated screen is a must for me now, as shooting interiors in tight spaces means I can push the camera right into the corner and still see the screen as I can manipulate it back towards me! - The focus peaking will be great as the hardest thing with the TS-E is manual focusing on such a wide shot. The build in level also means I can shoot handheld for externals and get everything plumb & true. Speeds up my workflow no end for daytime exteriors! I was more than happy with my 6Dmk 2 but for minimal extra the EOS R will become my main body (I use the vertical battery grip with both) I also own 70-200mm F/4 L IS, 24-105mm F/4 L IS MK1, 17-40mm F/4 L, 28-300mm F/3.5 - 5.6 L & a MKIII 2x extender as well as the TS-E 17mm F/4 L as detailed above.

There is no single all-purpose body, each of these have strengths and a common audience of buyers. Mechanical vs mirrorless doesn't make the picture any better. Most cannot buy multiple bodies to shoot optimally for sports with a 1dx2, landscape/portraits with 5d4 or R, timelapse with R. Instead most will hope for the best buying what they can afford like the 6d2 or RP and do just fine.

Glad you mentioned the fact the vary angle screens don’t stick out straight....really made that feature bittersweet for me on 6dii. Moved to 5dsr and never looked back. Also the AF and arrangement of AF points on 6d vs 5d/7d series... It’s too bad, there’s a lot I liked about my 6di/ii but canon is intentionally crippling the series to distinguish between it and 5d/7d

Jared you missed on GPS built in 5Dm4, also I am more interested in lower ISO and I think that the mania of high ISO is overrated. My last comment is, why would anybody buy another DSLR instead of mirrorless ??? I do have both 5Dm4 and EOS-R and I didn't use the 5D since I got the mirrorless ..... In the future the IBIS is a must, can't do easy 5 axis in the lens.

Hi Jared. Thanks for this comparison. I am late to the game but planning to upgrade to a full frame from a Canon T7i. This video has been helpful. One thing I haven't figured out yet: How will NOT having Bluetooth on the 5D Mark IV effect what it does? Right now, I can open the Canon app on my phone & download photos to the app. Will that option go away with the 5DMarkIV? Thanks for taking a moment to reading this. I appreciate your videos! Angie

Great video Jared as always. From some of the things you mentioned about the 5D Mark IV, I’m feeling a lot better about my 5D Mark III. Looks to me like the Mark IV wasn’t really a REVolution over my Mark III per se, as much as it was an EVOlution...and maybe not as much of one as people would have wanted at that. I’m still saving my cash right now for a Nikon Zed 10 professional-grade mirrorless camera. That camera doesn’t exist yet, but hey...details!!!

Cool comparison; but it leaves an empty spot and me wondering... why did you omit a brick for the 5Ds/5DsR? Although it's the oldest beast of those, it's still a current camera along with the other ones you included. Perhaps more of a niche camera, but should win hands down for Canon shooters who shoot architectures, landscapes and studio work.
Personally, I'm not even tempted to change it to any of these cameras - only Canon's rumored high-res mirrorless camera will likely change it.

      @mk0x55 5 лет назад

@@froknowsphoto, well thanks for your quick answer. To me the camera blows the other ones out of the water for a lot of my shooting. It only has competition outside Canon's lineup from cameras like Nikon's D850/Z7, Sony A7R3, or Fujifilm GFX.
How often do you update your camera (I mean if you mean the firmware)? A replacement (not just a firmware update) for the 5Ds-line shall arrive in the end of this year or during the next, so if you mean that kind of update, it will be updated almost certainly.
It is true that it doesn't have the noise performance of its competitors, but you can still use ETTR and for static scenes even mean stacking and exposure blending to achieve results that can compete with all of its competition + MF cameras out there. Something I use quite often and am very pleased by the results. Based on this, I don't call the camera dead, but still the best one Canon has to offer me. :)

I found my answer now if they will just come out with it already.... Autofocus and Subject Detection
Utilizing Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF Technology, the EOS R5 will be capable of making ultra-high-speed autofocus calculations to match its immensely powerful high-speed shooting capability of 20 fps. Subject detection adopted from the Live View AF tracking system in the EOS-1D X Mark III brings Face, Head and even Eye tracking when People detection is set, providing ease and accuracy when capturing stills or video. Detection of Animals will also be possible for the first time in a Canon camera, effectively tracking the whole body, face, or eye of cats, dogs, or birds for speed and precision.

I’m not going to spend over $1,200 on my first body and glass because I’m not experienced enough to do that. A d810 was a great camera when it came out and if I can grab a used one for $800 and grab a sigma 85mm 1.4 I think that’s a good place to start. I have done some portrait and street photography. What are your thoughts about a beginner looking for a full frame on a budget? Are there better options for less than $1200?

I have watched a few of your videos and I think Im ready to decide on the 6D Mk ii. Im upgrading from a Canon T2i, so basically anything will be an upgrade that will make me go wow. I have decent glass that I would like to continue using. from other videos you have I see the 6D Mk ii has decent iso, fast enough shutter speeds, and even though that 6.5 frames a second shooting or just the 21 frames of raw in burst isn't the greatest, that's still is a helluva lot better than what I currently have.Plus Im pretty good at capturing what I like, so fps means not much to me. Im sticking with Canon because I know they are built well. My T2i has about 400000 on the shutter count and it's still functioning. Im going to let my wife use that to get use to the whole DSLR thing as she has never used one.
The only thing I am stuck on is I like the crop sensor with the EF zoom lenses. While I love the full frame idea to upgrade (like I said I feel pretty much there for the 6D Mk ii) I was wondering if there is a crop sensor camera that does well with the higher isos? The 80D seems lacking. If there is one, then I have more thinking to do.

Can't wait to see what the 1DX Mark lll is going to offer, for now the 5D Mark IV is awesome. How about learning how to hold a camera instead of IBIS, you do realize that you don't need IBIS it's just a marketing strategy hyped by Sony. Optical stabilization is better than IBIS. Okay maybe IBIS is good for video, if that's what floats your boat! Great video Jared, this must have been hard for you since your a Nikon/Sony shooter hahaha
