This is the Real World Review of the Canon EOS R Mirrorless Camera. The question is, is it time to switch to a Sony a7 III, should you buy the Canon 6D Mark II or is it even worth getting over the Canon 5D Mark IV.

What do you think about this camera now, after watching the Real World Review? Don't forget you can DOWNLOAD Sample RAW Files from the Canon EOS R froknowsphoto.com/eosr/
Will add Canon into the collectioon at a later date. For now i cant go past the value of the A7iii. As always i appreciate the effort you go to with your work Jared.
Love this review - lots of work put into this for sure. As a long-time Canon shooter since the AE-1 came out I did pre-order my EOS R and have been happily using it since it arrived in my hands a few weeks ago. Just a comment about the one card slot - you can use the Canon connect app to automatically back-up your photos to your smartphone :) This should be shown to counter all the complaints about the single card slot - I've seen a few reviewers bring this up - and I used it with great success already,
Keep up the great work - you guys really did a fantastic job !
I own the EOS R ... and I love it!
My bro, pls pls test out the "live" auto transfer feature to the Camera Connect app. I'm seeing pretty great results through that.(by other YTubers. I haven't been able to save enough to rent the R yet.)
And honestly I'm quite surprised that you loved it so much but being a Canon shooter and also having seen how their cameras do better over time than they do at launch (in terms of reviews) I'm also not surprised. Lol
But pls do check the auto transfer feature. Yes, it is only jpegs, but I think that will help one hone their "right in camera" skills much better.
Will it be better then z6.?? For both photo video
The one rare moment that you don’t need a higher ISO when shooting at Knight
underrated comment
Cannot emphasize enough how much I appreciate the work you guys do on these real world reviews. I held the camera but haven’t used it extensively, can’t wait to see your opinion! 👍🏻
Trust me bro these comments really help. I did one real world review of a lens couple years ago and man it's a ton of work for sure. I haven't done a Fro style real worlf review ever since. LMAO. Having said that, I'm not as consistent and I do have a day job to think about too. (Yeah excuses I know..lol)
Thanks for the comments guys. Reviews like this typically take at least 2-3 weeks to complete, from prep to shooting to editing. It’s a huge undertaking and I appreciate that you acknowledge that.
Stephen Eckert Stephen Eckert I’m a RUclipsr myself, one man band, full time job plus RUclips. I 100% understand the work that’s put in, and I know you guys crush it, so I felt like it needed to be said. Thanks for replying and I loved the video.
@@stepheneckert4006 💯% brother:)
gotta say the same, well done JP!

I used the R yesterday at a wedding, had the adapter on with the Canon 85mm 1.4 is and Sigma 50mm 1.4 .... tact sharp every time and my thumb finger wasn't getting nearly as tired as if I was using a joystick to adjust the focus point. The grip feels weirdly smooth when you pick up the camera for the first time, but once you start using it.... WOW, talk about a great camera in the hands!
Solid Brix Studios completely agree, definitely our favorite feeling mirrorless camera ergonomic wise!
Were you trying the Wifi to smartphone as an extra data backup? My EOS R arrives this week. I just installed the Canon app to my phone and upgraded the card in my phone after seeing a review by one Travis Harris who posted a few days go some good feedback.
Mario Vaden hi, I tried the WiFi backup during a small event to immediately show photos on a slideshow, I was impressed at how quickly the photos were sent to my iPad! Not sure how it’d hold up for extensive shooting due to space, but having a card to switch out on your device sure seems like it would help a lot
Everyone usually has an angle. Froknow is one of the most unbiased people out there
Could you make an update on this R. The firmware you refer to is now available?
Best videos on RUclips! The effort you and your team put forth - it does not go unnoticed!
Solid review as always. Ive been enjoying the EOS-R for a while and so far Im liking it a lot.
Mattias Burling its nice how you always appreciate the gear instead of just basing everything off a spec sheet.
I will be waiting
This guy churning out free content of this calibre on RUclips is absolutely fantastic. Great job Jared.
Solid review! I just got my EOS-R this weekend and love how it fits in the hand. Just published a video on my YT of some photos I've taken with it and so far am happy with it!
I don't always watch your videos but I really appreciate the time, effort, and honesty you put into your reviews. And you actually shoot and post photos worth looking at. There's a lot of other Photography RUclipsrs that miss that last part.
Excellent job with this review, great detailed real work review. Thanks!
Great review brother! Just picked up the R and loving it so far!
Thanks Jared! I own the R along side an A7Rii and A7Riii and I'm eagerly awaiting next years (rumoured) 1DXii replacement, the RX. Myself, the R isn't perfect but I love it. I appreciate you don't sugar coat things! Keep kicking ass.
This is an amazing review, so thorough and informative and that is exactly what you want from a review like this. Thanks Jared keep up the great work!!
Appreciate your guys work in these videos...was really feeling the music selection too
Real world review always tops the spec hype. This is the review I’ve been waiting for since the announcement. Great job as always. Cudos to you, Stephen and anyone else involved in the production. Keep up the good work. (Once again, don’t forget Raw Talk).
The amount of Time and Quality put in this review is amazing gotta love you and production teams work
Great job Jared, always a thorough real world test.
Great review! Thanks a heap.
And you've even invented a new word: “horizontical” - never heard that one before.
This is by far the best review I’ve seen for, well, probably any camera ever! Thanks for the honest & detailed review, it definitely helped me understand a few more things about the camera.
I absolutely love my EOS R and have already used it to death for photos & videos, it’s a beast of a camera. I upgraded from a 6D & I couldn’t be happier. Its a perfect run & gun for vlogging & photographing seamlessly (for me).
Seems like there’s a lot of negativity surrounding the camera from folks who have never seen one in person. I actually had a few guys at Samys camera laugh at me when they asked what body I use when I went to pick up a new lens. Almost like they’re angry that I chose this over the Sony, or any other camera for that matter? My money, my life dudes.
I dunno. I think the people who are truly salty & aggressive about this camera are either insecure about their own abilities, or just outright assholes. There are alternatives to several features, and they are afraid of change/alternatives with this new camera (“no joystick” vs just use the new touch & drag). I personally don’t like Sony’s for several reasons, but I don’t go out of my way to attack anyone who prefers it.
The EOS R works for me as a perfect daily vlogging & photo camera. Maybe it’ll work for others like me! Like you say, at the end of the day, shut up & get out and shoot. So I’ll shut up now 😂
Thanks Jared!
>> I think the people who are truly salty & aggressive about this camera are either insecure about their own abilities, or just outright assholes.
I don't think that is fair. I am a pre-Canon shooter who switched to Sony when Canon released the 5DIV. Why? Because I am a hybrid shooter, and Canon and video is still not OK. The massive crop and the absurd codec simply isn't on par with Sony. Not even close. This is just reality and has nothing to do with insecurity or being an asshole. Also, as I moved to Sony and started buying native lenses, I have to say that Sony lenses are (mostly) fantastic. Some of them have no equal anywhere, not even my best L-glass. For example, I shoot macro a bit, and use the Sony FE 90mm for that. I used the Canon 100mm on my 5DIII. The Sony blows the Canon out of the water, and that is saying something, 'cause the Canon is fantastic. The Sony still blows it away.
Also, one of the things that is *really* nice with the newer Sony cameras is the Eye-AF. For run-and-gun and for portraiture, that's a *huge* thing, and you don't know how good it is until you have tried it. On Canon R Eye-AF is still (as Jared points out) mostly useless. It'll change for sure, and I am really looking forward to that, but at the moment it is not anywhere near the same league as Sony.
So, no, having a preference for Sony is not being insecure or an asshole. Sony is simply the best choice at the moment for certain types of photography. If you shoot both video and pictures, Sony still beats Canon by a significant margin. Objectively.
Now, if the next versions of the Canon improve, I would certainly consider switching back. Canon bodies blows Sony bodies away. The Canon menu system is a dream compared to the Sony menu system. Many will say Canon colors beats Sony, but that is bovine manure. It's trivial to create a LR preset that makes them indistinguishable, and if you use CaptureOne (free for Sony owners) then you don't need a preset. C1 default color science makes Sony every bit as good as Canon. Sony already have more *accurate* colors than Canon, but accurate is not always what we want :-)
I should also point out that compared to *all* the competition, the Canon EOS R video quality is appaling. The 4K video almost looks like 1080p that has been up-scaled. Perhaps I was using the wrong settings, I don't know. I also shot some at 1080p, and my iPhone produces better video than the EOS R.
To me this is not acceptable, but par for course from Canon.
@@terjeber You are a Sony funboy, nothing more. Sony is UNRELIABLE non-pro manufacturer who havent done SINGLE recall for ANY of its FF mirrorless cameras, and had many DESIGN DEFECTS over years:
- star eating (no other manufacturer has this BIZZARE defect) - ALL GENERATIONS!
- mount separation (A7)
- sensor reflecions (A7)
- overheating (A7, A7S, A7II, A7R)
- shutter shock (A7R)
- poor weather sealing (all generations)
NOT A SINGLE RECALL FOR ANY OF THESE DESIGN DEFECTS! That says how "reliable" and "pro" Sony is. Canon made COUNTLESS recalls for many of its cameras, even for small defects. So, stop being a Sony sponsored funboy and deal with facts - Sony is NOT reliable manufacturer, and cant be compared to Canon. OBJECTIVELY. ;)
@@rmrm3602
Well, at least we Sony faboys know how to spell fanboy.
The rest of your rant is childish. We're talking about image quality here. Yes, Sony has many issues, but image quality is not one of them. The menu system is terrible (but a tiny bit better this year). They never update their firmware with improvements. They have some annoying issues in AF-C with the iris. There are many, many issues with Sony. However, my comment was on quality of output.
@@terjeber When faced arguments and facts, all funboys react the same - attack on personal level, find gramatical errors and so on. xD Sony is simply NON RELIABLE manufacturer, and shouldn't be given TRUST and money, as they are simply not worth it. Hello, not a SINGLE recall on 3 GENERATIONS of its cameras (even 3500 dollar "pro" ones) - what are we talking about?! About "output quality" - Sony has THE WORST color science in the world, and needs constant color fixing in post, especialy in mixed lighting scenarios. Also, Sony files still suffer from posterization, artifacts and color shifts - even on A7III and A7RIII - watch Maven reviews. ;)
As the photo reviews from this camera hit my feed I'm being impressed. Great review!
Wow. Some of these shots are some of the best I've seen from you in ANY of your videos. Great job!
Thank you for this very insightful and comprehensive review. The work you put in to show a wide variety of shots using different lenses in different scenerios is super helpful and very much appreciated. Nice work!
"Horizontical" 😂😆😭 (20:25) 'Love the RUclipsrs who invent their own words...
😆
Thank you for this review, including Steven's excellent work and whomever might be handling the editing on this (if not Steven). At 45:17 you say "verse" like the verse of a song. Not "versus"?
While I'm not sure if 'verse' is correct in that context, he also says 'horizonticals.' that'shis brand and I think it's kinda cool.:)
So when I buy something from adorama and ship it to Europe. What about the guarantee? If the Camera makes problems do I have to ship it back to Amerika?
Wow, a lot of work went into this review. Really thorough and helpful. Thanks Jared!
Let's get it Fro!
The best EOS R review I've seen. I feel like you've upped your game lately. Very much non bias, no Sony promotion tossed in the mix, not trash on Fujifilm by comparing it to out of focus Fuji shots. It was refreshing compared to w hat other big reviews are doing.
The passion and love you guys put in your work oozes out from everywhere.
Keep up the good work.
Jared, Steven and Dan, you guys did such an amazing job with this review. It is so well put together...I've watched many reviews and yours is the best!!! Best wishes!
paweL Pawlowski thank you!
What a great review! I bought the EOS R 10 days ago, I’m high use amateur graduating from the 60D, which has served me well. I demoed the A7iii, could not get comfortable with the feel, and patiently waited for Canon. So glad I did, I love the images this full frame is giving me. Haven’t tried video yet and don’t really care as it’s not my thing. One question for you: on your joust photos, what focus method were you using, the Expand AF Around? Your focus on that sequence was amazing, still trying to get that using at the basketball court. Thanks again for the great review.
I think they did great with the Build Quality, EVF and new lens mount! Now I’m just waiting for a little more spec’d body to really make the new system shine!
I think the R might have been used to see what’s wrong with the system so they can fix it in the next iterations, while still offering a good camera for whoever really wants to move to Canon FF mirrorless as soon as possible
Excellent RWR ma man! Good honest feedback.. and great quality video-audio. Keep up the good work Fro gang
Thank you for this. I’ve been waiting for this review.
Canon went with ergos over loading the specs sheet! That EVF, LCD, magnesium body, and intuitive menus are amazing. Imagine if the EOS R had a baby with the Sony A7III.... haha - thanks for REAL perspective.
Refreshing to hear a Nikon shooter sing Canon praise. Specs are specs, but until you put it in uour hand and actually shot with, can you really see what Canon was trying to do. Yes, no IBIS is an issue for some. But if you are a DSLR shooter, you're not use to having it. Think this is a good transition camera in the Canon lineup. Great view. Amazing images as always. Top notch video work Steven.
moo The look of the images is enough for many to buy this camera.
"DSLR shooter, you're not use to having it", unless you come from Pentax :)
@moo You are so right! I bought a 70d, I didn't like the color science. I bought an a7iii, even worse. So now I decided to fix my eos 550d, the rubber loosened and the eyecup fell off, but I'll get a new and buy some glue to to fix the loosened covering. So really, color science has gone downward. 5d and 550d classics were the peak in color science! I might end up selling both my 70d and a7iii, sticking with my 550d!
Hi, I have a Canon 1200D and I am thinking of upgrading my equipment. I will photograph products and street photos. I am between canon EOS R or Canon 850D or EOS RP. I would like your help to choose and what lens can I combine ? Thanks a lot!
You are awesome man, love your review. This deserves a lot more views!
Really like your photo style as well. With high contrast/sharpness and popping colors, will pick up your preset pack :)
This is a great review of this camera. I love my new EOS R.
Hello Buttercup. Great review.
Hi
Very good video, for now I know what to choose when I'm replacing my photo equipment. EOS R, of course.
Thank you for good tips
So I’m debating between 5D Mk IV and the EOS R. I currently have a T6i and just recently bought a 24-70 f2.8 L series lens. Any advice or comments?
Nice long in-depth review and the production value is just getting better with every video.
As a pretty happy Sony A7Riii shooter, I don’t think I agree with saying the grip is “crap”. I don’t have an issue with it and I’m pretty sure because of the high sales of the A7 mark iii series, many people don’t have issue either. I actually would personally prefer the Sony A7 series to be larger similar to the EOS R but I simply use the vertical battery grip and it pretty much solves the ergos and handling. I use it pretty much 99% of the time. Sure it’s not for everyone but I wouldn’t say it’s crap because that’s surely an opinion and not fact.
I went for the Sony A7 series for the mirrorless features and not the compact size, although it’s a nice perk for certain situations when you want to go small. A Sony A7Riii and 55mm f/1.8 would be a hard combo to beat for image quality and size. I actually was sort of hoping for an A99ii sized mirrorless body from Sony and l happen to also like the fully articulating screen on it.
I have handled the EOS R and I like it. It’s about the perfect size.l, doesn’t need to be any smaller than that IMO. The lens are killer but the body has too many short comings for me to switch from my Sony A7Riii. Maybe Canons EOS R-Pro model will be the one that solves all the issues. We’ll see. I have yet to try the Nikon Z models, I’m a little more impressed with Canon but it’s more the lens I think.
A couple of points. One of the reasons this camera suffers all comes down to the sensor alone. In mirrorless the sensor is much more important to the performance of the camera than in a DSLR and this basically comes down to sensor read speed. The Canon EOS R sensor has the slowest read speed of any FF at ~ 1/8s compared to Sony and Nikon’s 1/15-1/30s (depending on bit depth). Slow read speed is why they could not offer full frame 4K, slow read speed is why the camera can’t do AF tracking at more than 3fps, slow red speed is why the eye-AF is not fast. I can understand this is more a 6DII class camera, but it’s still dearer than the A7III and Z6 which have proper sensors for mirrorless and offer much better performance. Canon should have developed newer sensor and while they were at it added BSI. The reason we don’t have IBIS is also due to sensor performance. Canon will release a premium model in about 6 months at Photokina in May 2019, and to be taken seriously this camera has to deliver on all fronts and that will only be possible with an all new mirrorless optimised sensor. If they can do that they might just have a very desirable camera as the EOS R gets a lot of the basics right. Canon has also said higher end models probably won’t have the silly touch bar and hopefully have better button layout, joystick, dual cards and dual digic CPU’s, as a single digic is also struggling with the DPAF, it needs more processing power than regular PDAF in a DSLR.
You won’t see a mirrorless sports camera for a few years, 1DX III will launch next year for the 2020 Olympics, as will Nikon D6, they have no answer yet to the A9 and A9 II will probably release within 12 or so months too.
I agree I would get this over a 6DII in a heartbeat but if I was also doing action work I’d still get the 5D4. However based on performance I”d get the A7III even though it has a lower res EVF and LCD. Nikon Z6 might be the sweet spot with better ergonomics if you can live without eye-AF.
No particular suffering. To quote one of many articles "The EOS R System with RF mount and Dual Pixel CMOS AF delivers unrivalled optical excellence, the world’s fastest autofocusing and faster communication between camera and lens.".
@@TallTreesClub Wow, you quoted a marketing brochure, I guess it must be true. Seriously dude!
Im shoot still with a Canon 5D mark iii, I'm looking into a new camera. I wouldn't be using this for video and 90% of the time I shoot everything in manual, would this be an upgrade?
Hi. Like yourself, I am also a left eye shooter. In your experience, is using the touch and drag convenient since your/my face takes most of the space? My nose isn't too big. Thanks.
Best review of the EOS R!!!
Just bought this camera and honestly I prefer this camera for photography than my A73. Yes the A73 is better on paper but hands on I like it better than the A73.
Yes, I agree! The EOS R fits so well in the hand. Sony cameras all-around just fit my hand strangely. To each their own! :)
Ex-Canon shooter, current Sony A7III and A7RIII here. I also gave this a go, but for me, the eye-AF is something I simply am not willing to give up. Also, I am a hybrid shooter, and Canon and video at the moment is a joke.
I am hopeful though. This is so far the first (and then the Fuji) real challenge to Sony in the mirrorless space. It's not there, but it is getting there.
Unless Canon gets real on video though, they are not going to de-throne Sony. Remember, Sony currently sells more FF mirrorless cameras than Canon sells FF DSLRs.
I should also point out that the EOS R video quality is appalling. I mean, terrible. It's so far away from the competition in quality that I'd be ashamed to release that camera to hybrid shooters.
@@terjeber Remember, Canon is BY FAR the leading camera manufacturer. That claims of Sony selling more FF mirrorles than Canon FF DSLR are made BY SONY, and not by independent research, like this one:
photorumors.com/2018/08/01/2018-canon-nikon-and-sony-market-share-latest-nikkei-bcn-and-cipa-reports/
@@terjeber other than the 4K crop in canon video, what makes it a joke? I've seen the tests with Armando and Potato jet and from what they've concluded, the Canon was better in almost every way. What the sony was better at was dynamic range and lowlight. IBIS in the A7III was not special as well. So just curious to know what exactly makes the video a joke. I'm saying this from a neutral point of view as I am currently deciding between the A7iii, Xt3 and EOSr
Im in the same boat, I’m thinking of selling my A7Riii and buy an EOS R stills. I have an A7iii that I use more for video so I won’t be totally hindered with the 4K in the EOS R. Reason I want the EOS R is for the 50mm 1.2 such a beautiful lens
Great job Jared and Steven!
Great Review ! thanks for your hard work.
This is a perfect review.
This is the only review I was waiting for amongst the popular youtubers who review gears. I will be making my decision based on this review.
Nikhil Chandra , I got this coming from a 5D3 user. Also got the xt3. I’ve been using the canon M line for years now so I was already “trained” on how to use the evf and touch drag focus instead of playing “space invaders AF” with the joystick. Once you train yourself on how to use this camera you can’t go back!
I kind of agree. Its just that i love ovf because it gets rid of the colors and contrast and helps me focus on the sole purpose of the viewfinder... Composition. But i totally understand a huge section of people preferring evf. I will choose it for video myself. As for the joystick.. I rarely use it anyway. Its good for sports and wildlife... But for what i do landscape streets portraits etc.. I still rely on focus and recompose with centre point.
Every system has its place... Right now i am sooo tempted to get xt3 or the eos r and see what the hype is all about... Its not my need but want haha
Great review! I know a lot of hard work went into this video and I hope it helps people out. Also just wanted to say that your Wonder Years preset is my absolute favorite! I want to use that preset on all my photos!
Glad to hear wonder years is working out.
Great in-depth review Jared, thank you for the effort put into making this !
I love the images I’m getting from the eosR, this system is going to win the mirrorless war. The R is a great entry point and the lenses are the building blocks. Sony have some great tech at the moment but they are limited by a small throat diameter on their mount and this flaw will be the one canon will exploit as it’s so key to where they are taking this system. The eye focus and FPS will be solved. The sensor is in the works and Canon will win the day
I see this statement "small throat diameter" often. Why is it a problem? Remember, the flawed Sony throat diameter is wider than the current Nikon throat (DSLR). What could possibly make this an issue for Sony lenses?
Terje Bergesen why do you think Nikon increased their mount diameter so much on the Z. With the short flange distance this is especially desirable. For making fast distortion free glass. Canon have always had that advantage on DSLRs and have. Which is why most Sony jumpers have been reluctant to leave behind the lenses. Canon have redesigned the whole geometry to improve this further with the R and all the lenses Released are getting rave reviews. Including the 24-105 zoom which is their best ever. Go check out some real world reviews even Tony (rhymes with Sony) loves the R lenses
@@teslar1
I have absolutely no doubt the new Canon R lenses are great. Good Canon L glass always was. To answer your first question, I assume Nikon increased the mount diameter to make it *easier* to make good glass for their new cameras, but that was not my point. My point is that at the moment, Sony sits on the throne of just about every type of lens for 35mm cameras anywhere. It seems that making distorion free, sharp, excellent glass for any focal length is at least possible, even with a narrow throat.
The story is that a narrow throat is particularly problematic for wide-angle lenses. So how come the Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM blows the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM out of the water in almost every possible way. *Significantly* sharper, better transmission, less vignetting, better transmission etc.
Is the problem on the long end? The Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS eats the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM for lunch. There is no competition at all. The Canon is, comparatively, as soft as vaseline on your front element (only a slight exaggeration).
Is it a problem for non-zooms? If so, why is the Zeiss Batis 25mm F/2 sooooo much sharper than the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM, at every aperture?
I keep reading that the narrow throat of Sony is a problem for lens designers. If so, it seems to be a problem Sony and Zeiss really have no problems working around. The Sony 12-24 is an excellent zoom. In fact, there is hardly any length where there is not a Sony lens that is shaper, with less distortion, less vignetting and less CA than anything offered by Canon for their EF mount. So, where is the problem?
1/ Sony has some of the best glass in the industry at the moment. I am seriously looking forward to properly tesing Canons new glass, I have no doubt it will be very good, and if it is better than that of Sony, that'll be spectacular. At the moment however, Sony has the best glass for 35mm cameras, mirrorless or DSLR. Seriously.
2/ Your insinuation that Tony Northrup is a Sony fanboy is childish and ignorant. Tony has been a Canon fanboy his entire career, while his wife, Chelsea is a Nikon fangirl. They have both been seriously critical of Sony at every single release. Their praises for Sony over the past two years is rooted in the fact that Sony has released the best cameras for their (and mine) use by a good margin since the Sony A7RII. The A7III and A7RIII are still significantly better than the EOS R, and the A9R is an improvement on every single DSLR on the market, perhaps with one or two exceptions.
Oh, and please do not brand me a Sony fanboy. I have been shooting Canon since I got my AE-1 a long time ago, and if Canon had released a single camera that met my requirements, I would still be mainly shooting Canon. At this point in time they do not. My requirements are not absurd. I want
1/ Excellent auto focus - Canon delivers
2/ Excellent image quality - Canon delivers, but are a little low on super sharp glass, Sony is better here
3/ Good 4K video capabilities - Canon does not deliver. Not in the DSLR space nor in the mirrorles space, the 4K video quality of the EOS R is a joke compared to the competition. I shoot 90% 4K even if I deliver in 1080p only, since 4K downsampled to 1080p blows any video shot in 1080p out of the water with a HUGE margin.
4/ Good 1080p video quality for when I need to shoot, quickly edit and deliver in a hurry. 1080p on the EOS R is an even worse joke than 4K. 1080p on the EOS R is unacceptably bad.
Please note, I tested the EOS R, and if I shot images only, it would be on my Christmas shopping list. I shoot images *and* video, and I don't want to drag multiple bodies around. So the EOS R is not on my list.
The reason I went to Sony was that when I shot with Canon (5DIII - and some times the 6D at the time) I also had to drag my Panasonig GH4 with me, with extra glass, adapters and all that. The A7RII and the A7III that I switch between now, both do better video than the GH4 and at least as good images as the Canons. The A7RIII is better than the 5DIII was for my use, but I am not a sports shooter. For "fast" action (kids soccer games) I now use the A7III (not the RII - its a little slow, but not unbearably so, but the A7III is much faster) and I would chose that for this kind of photography over then 5DIII any day.
sweet review, was deciding on this or a7iii, gonna go with the sony i think
puds boi A7iii is still the mirrorless camera to beat, especially for the price. They’re hard to get though as it’s super popular.
I really appreciate your in-depth review, you really covered all the bases. i have to clarify that on the 6d2 you can put it in live view and with dual pixel AF you get a huge white box the covers the vast majority of the screen and you can simply touch the screen to move the AF points. It also has the ability to enable touch shutter. Most people miss this and i do understand in the optical viewfinder the focus points are very limited and there is no joystick to move the AF.
Hi! Do you think is better to take EOS R or Z6 or Sonya7iii for new photographers and portraits, i dont care about videography .. which choice i go with? I like the colors in eos R , and i hate the small body like a joy! I start the game from 5 months and i want a better choice for future
Nice camera, nice review.
Thanks for the large effort you put into these reviews. Real photographer, real photos, real review.
Hi sir ,
I'm a beginner photographer ,I would like to buy a new camera, which one could you recommend Canon EOS R or 5D mark iv (I can't afford a RF lenses so I ll go for ef lenses)
Thank you ...
Just bought my 6D Mark II last year. Any options to trade in for a EOS R?
Canon, you bought me. I wanted to switch to full frame so I will definitely buy it soon.
BTW. Jared, thanks for the excellent review! I appreciate that eventhough you are a Nikon shooter, you can do an objective review. Thumbs up!
Hi
I don't shoot video and most Tubers so far just griped about video specs, yawn. This is a more useful review for a stills shooter like me, so thank you.
Hi thank you for the review, it’s very good, I’m profoundly deaf so had to relay on the subtiles.
So think lost quite a bit of what you were suggesting in terms of, what to buy.
I’m an enthusiast amateur, I’m running various older/modified canons for astrophotography and 6D mk 1 mainly for super Macro via Mp-E and some general photography with a range of EF lenses. The 6d is pretty old now and was thinking of getting the mk2 as an upgrade but wondering now re maybe a 5d (not sure which version) or this new EOS R? Would my MP-E definitely work with the EOS R? Any general thoughts?
i Really enjoy these videos! Amazing job Guys!!
Canon colors look great. Vivid and pleasing at the same time.
And Sony colors suck HARD. Biggest difference is there...
BEST R Review
Thank You! You are the only person to point out the stray line issue (at 40:26)! I rented and tested the EOS R and had the same experience. Worse yet... I was shooting on a tripod at 100 ISO f5.6 with the included RF lens in a low light museum and taking single shots - first shot was sharp and clean. The very next shot was BLURRED! Like someone moved the camera during the shot. Problem is, I was controlling the camera remotely with the iPad to remove camera shake as a factor. I first considered this to be an issue with a bad SD UHS-1 card. So, I switched to a brand new card. Later on, I had the SAME experience happen again! And then later, the stray line issue occurred. DEFINITELY something that Canon needs to address immediately. This alone has stopped me from investing into Canon's wave of the future. Bad SD cards you can avoid. But a camera that randomly has an issue that could ruin "the shot" is risky!
Hi Jared, please can somebody answer after 3 weeks of waiting for password reset in gearvault. Thanks
I've just moved over to Sony from the Canon 7d MkII. I was worried it wouldn't be as good as the 7Dmkii for wildlife shooting considering it isnt touted much in that department (still stumped as to why) and that Im using an MC-11 adaptor and 150-600c. Ok the EVF takes bit of getting used to but the AF is so damn accurate its kinda scary good and improved more after the recent firmware updates. I couldn't wait any longer for Canon to bring out something that is as fast as the A7III and probably charge more for it. 8 fps manual is no good for what I need a camera to do. Sorry to sound like I'm jumping on the bandwagon but Sony really have nailed it.
We tried the EF500mm f4.0L IS on the EOS R with the adapter, the AF and burst (3fps) was unusable ... did not work at all for us.. the AF of the 5Dmk4 is of a totally other level in terms of tracking... on the Sony A9 it did great , just like this : ruclips.net/video/JQJa9u3Cdg4/видео.html
The DR was not that good of the EOS R , whites are quickly blown out and shadow recovery did gave a color shift tot blue/purple and noise, the D850 in our photo group is the best in sensor quality but the perfect Canon 500 did a better job on the A9 then the 200-500 on the D850, optics did gave the edge at the end..
Sony is unreliable manufacturer, just look at all manufacturing defect they had over years and never done a single recall (star eating, sensor reflections, mount separation, poor weather sealing, overheating)... Chosing Sony over Canon is not pro choice.
@@rmrm3602 Ive not said the A7III is a pro consumer choice in terms of weather sealing, I cant speak for the A9. I cant say wither those other aspects you mention are accurate either but in terms of how it performs as a wildlife camera with the MC-11 and Sigma 150-600c its very impressive for the price and non-native combination efficency. Canon arent offering those kinds of speeds and options in the EOS R. I also think the lcd mode dial is a bit like trying to re-invent the wheel. How do you know what mode your in when the camera is off, certainly if you need to select the right mode in the moment. Sony have kept that aspect simple and give you more useful dials to use. Canon do have an upper hand on colour but I cant say the colours on the A7III are as bad as people make out. There are videos which show how the blue bias in the green/yellow tones can be adjusted in camera or adjusted in post. Personally for stills I dont find it much of an issue.
@@kaak4737 The D850, 5Dmkiv and 1dxmk2 where my other choices. I couldn't justify the 1dx2 unless I was a paid full time professional and you don't really need 14 fps for general wildlife/sports. Its also big and heavy for what I need and too damn expensive. The d850 is awesome as is the 5dmkiv but found the A7iii more balanced in fearures. The AF is sublime and was only concerned if the MC-11/150-600c combo would be fast enough for wildlife. Its is more than capable and thats all that matters to me really.
I dont have the luxury to test primes but I will say some of the features on the Sigma 150-600 such as the focus limiter seem to be unlocked/more useful for controlling AF. The image stabilization in combination with ibis is also very clever. You can leave it active and will dis-engage/ limit when shooting at fast shutter speeds.
Great video!! Appreciate all the hard work put in, along with the unbiased review. FINALLY, someone who doesn't base an opinion off of a spec sheet and USES the camera in the field, like a real photographer. Of course you have the (no surprise here) SONY users saying "Mine is better", but your experience in the field USING the camera can't be denied. A camera shouldn't be based off of a spec sheet. It's the whole user experience, and of course the final result that matters most. In your case, the user experience and end result was fantastic (Minus the few things you mentioned that need work, that I agree with you on) and that is what matters. Again, thanks for your hard work and the hard work of your team. I would confidently trust this review to make a buying decision if I was in the market for mirrorless, which is a testament to your unbiased, rational review.
Nice review of this review
Alan Wrobleski's review of William Manchester's review of Jared Polin's review of the EOS R was breathtakingly honest. SO glad to read a review of a review of a review that doesn't just look at word count or number of lines but really drives home the point with a succinct one line which tells all. Less is more.
What do you think about the 5fps of this camera for sports like basketball, soccer?
Totally agree with you on the top lcds and lens rings. Just extra frills. And the extra lens controls I find just make things more complicated. I know the controls on the body intuitively, and use many different lenses. The lenses all have their controls in different places, some with control rings and some not, it just adds an unnecessary level of complexity.
Yay,! He loves Canon. Yay
Hahahaha my thoughts exactly! I try not to be a fanboy but man my eyes lit up when he did the wrap up.heheh
Excellent review. As you say, if you are coming from a no-camera situation, the similarly priced A7III is probably still your best shot, both in terms of features, but also in terms of native lens line-up. It seems though that Canon has done a better job with adapters than has Nikon, so this is great news from Canon.
Also, when you think about card slots, AF-speed etc, this is a $2200 camera, vs the Nikon that is a $3400 camera. To me, Canon has priced this well, and Nikon is doing some sort of drugs here. I can't see a single compelling reason to buy the Nikon mirrorless at this point in time. If you are coming from nowhere, just buying a new camera, the list currently seems to be Sony, followed by Fuji, then Canon and somewhere much further down the totem pole, Nikon.
This camera is *not* the one that is going to stop people moving from Canon to Sony when they go mirrorless. Canon still is significantly behind the A7III, A7RIII and not to forget the A9. At the moment. But what this camera gives Canon users is the possibility of the future. I am sure Canon will release bodies in the $3K range that will significantly out-perform this first model. Probably give Sony some competition in the mirrorless market. That is great for everybody.
Nikon? I don't know. I am preparing for the wake. They are currently not doing what they need to do.
Nikon is just a DSLR manufacturer basically (and at this moment Canon is not that different....Pro Press DSLR's that are unmatched due to the weight and sturdy build). D850 STILL seems like a beast of a camera to me, and that is probably where Nikon should stay, a manufacturer that just makes very strong camera's which you eventually can take with you into warzones (D5, D850) without being worried about getting dust or moisture on your sensor because it's covered with a mirror and shutter curtain and weather shielding. With Sony A7III...I am not so sure if it can handle abuse like the Nikon D5 or Canon 1DX Mark II can.

>> With Sony A7III...I am not so sure if it can handle abuse like the Nikon D5 or Canon 1DX Mark II can
It can't. Not even close. I'd love to see Sony build larger, heavier and more durable bodies though. We'll see what the future brings. Not that I plan on dropping by parachute into a war zone any time soon :-)
The Z7 appears to be a very well built camera:
‘This is not marketing department weather resistance. This is engineering department weather resistance. Anything that can be sealed has been sealed. I’m impressed, and I will say for future cut-and-paste blurbs: this is as robustly weather sealed a camera as we’ve ever disassembled.’

Thank you so much for this amazing review i have been thinking in which canon full frame camera i should get and this video was very helpfull!
Great video. We appreciate all your efforts.
Has anyone else noticed “Real world review” is spelt wrong in the thumbnail? Lol
Ooops! My eyes read it right, will fix it after lunch!
Great review and sold
Man! That was the best camera review I've seen for a long time, well done.
Hello Jared. I'm tempted by the change to replace my Canon 6d (version 1) but what else pulls me back is the adapter, because I have my EF lens kit that I do not want to replace with the new ones, I would like your advice; I have a 24-70 f2.8 L (version 1) that I refuse to stop using. Thank you very much for your contribution. Sorry for my English (I'm still studying) Greetings from Entre Ríos, Argentina.
Please make the most wanted video. That is Using EF-S lens in EOS R !!! Consider the fact that ' most canon users are using efs lenses and apsc cameras globally' .. All are aware of New mirrorless release. People need to decide whether or not to keep their crop lenses. No exclusive video on this topic. How is the image quality (usable megapixel, focal length, pixel peeping comparison etc) and video quality !
Chickenthandoori ef-s lenses on any full frame sensor will just give you incredibly harsh vignetting. it'll look like a black frame is around your subject
It works fine. As soon as you mount an EF-S lens the camera jumps into 1.6x crop mode, which means your photos will be about 11mp instead of 30mp. It's great for video though.
Ebrahim Saadawi you're a moron. Lenses do NOT affect megapixels. The megapixels come from the sensor inside the digital camera. The lens just allows light to be focused on the sensor to render an image. A 11mp camera will ALWAYS be an 11mp camera.
@@dramamine755 he is right though, an efs lens will leave you in crop mode in which about 11MP of the 30MP sensor is properly exposed.
This is why the efs lens is good for 4k as the EOS R does 4k at 1:1.
Jack Maclain that's a digital crop by 1.7x. It supersamples the 4k to make it look better. However the lens does affect megapixels or video quality. I am right. You are half right. The other guy is all wrong. AN OPTICAL LENS DOES NOT IMPACT MEGAPIXELS.
And when comes the Nikon Z7 Real World Review?!
PuddinPants So you tested it already?
PuddinPants Better for me, I already have a D850 so I can save the cash😁
@PuddinPants lies! The eos R is garbage!
@PuddinPants what was so bad with the Z7? I have the Z6 on preorder and am considering cancelling it.
@PuddinPants thanks for your input. So do you own the EOS R? Is it a much better camera?
I just got my A7 III with no intention of buying this camera, but Jareds review videos are always amazing. Great job as usual.
Ur real world review and video work have always been good but this is one of the best review video I have seen from Steve. Great b roll and a roll. Keep up the good work
Great camera. This is a great starting point for anyone at this point. As you said, this should be bought ahead of the mark 4 unless you are a hardcore pro who beats their camera day in day out. Yes some of the specs are bit let down (in video) but there is pretty much nothing to complain in stills. and with that 28-70 and 50 1.2 , canon has really shown intent. Optics is a major part in any system and Canon knows it. They are no.1 for a reason.
And again, great content quality man. The hard work shows in the review. I just realised I have watched every notable review of yours in last 4 years and I hadn't even subscribed you...now I did :) Cheers.
Lol! Glad you subbed..hehe
The price of the camera doesn't complement canon's lack of ingenuity. I'll wait for the EOS R ii? Awesome, "Real World Review, Thank, you.
Looking to replace my 5D Mark II as it is old and outdated. I'm strongly looking at mirror less and like the option that I can still use my current lenses. To be 100% certain, I wouldn't have any loss of quality from using the adapters with my 70-200 2.8 II lens and 24-70 2.8? It doesn't change my lenses around in any way? I want to be certain of this before I make a decision. At least until I have the money to get the newer lenses. Thank you for the in depth review.
Fantastic review, Jared!! Thank You!
i'm a semi-professional and i love this camera!
Jared "Off the Rip" Polin
Looking to upgrade and this helped me a lot. Love your reviews. Thank you.
Thank you Jared for your EXCELLENT reviews ! You put up the best content on the web in this category !
Great review, well made, constructive, this is what I call a proper review actually showing the shoot not just talking about it.
12th comment [and 38th A7III purchase in Ontario]
What’s the big problem with the on/off switch?? It’s like the same spot as on my 80D
