If you dont have the LTE functionality the only way to use the phone functionality is to be connected to your phone via bluetooth or for both phone and watch to be connected on the same wifi. If you have the LTE functionality your watch will work independently from your phone - think of it as having a second cell phone. However, last I checked, about a year ago, there is a cost to activate your samsung watch on the AT&T network of around $15/month. In essence your watch has its own data plan.
For all music players other than Spotify you can control the music playing on your phone e.g Amazon music and all One plus point is that you can even access the playlist from the watch

I am using the gw4 lte and I have not yet faced any problems. It receives sms and calls perfectly and yes you should connect it to ur phone...I don't know if it will work without connecting to ur phone cos you need to use the same phone number as ur phone...hopefully this helps...

How many songs can you transfer without slowing down the watch as you need other apps and faces too?
