    I thought pregnant women's smell would get hypersensitive as a form of defense mechanism keeping them from eating spoiled or poisonous food, because this could damage the baby.

      Thats most likely the case but scientists are too scarred to confirm anything without a buttload of evidence behind it, I agree with you though

      I also think that it works as a defense mechanism, in order to detect all sorts of things, including predators (back in the early days of humans), not just for spoiled foods. (just my thoughts)

      My father refers to it as being immortal. As a joke I guess. He'll grab something hot, like a cast iron pan that has been on the stove, and then we'll do the same and immediately draw our hands back because it's just too hot. And were like, "We can't touch that, it's too hot." And then my dad is just like, "For a mere mortal."
      Apparently it comes with being Chinese. My siblings and myself didn't get enough Chinese in us I guess. Apparently the Chinese have a high tolerance for heat.

      Same thing happend to me when I played guitar constantly. The reason behind it was I just got loads of callouses on my fingers. When I was building my airplane same thing with my hands, in the beginning the sheets of aluminium would cut me all the time, when I finished my hands got so tough it was hard to cut them.

    I took care of a sick cat when I was in Taiwan. She looked weak and never comfortable and had a runny nose and saliva hanging out of her mouth and her fur was falling out. As soon as she got pregnant she got healthy. Her nose stopped running, her fur grew back and she looked great and had tremendous energy. She stayed that way all the while nursing her kittens. Then as soon as the kittens stopped nursing she got sick again and went back to looking the way she was before.

    My boss has a crazy good sense of smell when she's pregnant. She stepped into our huge grocery store market and immediately smelled gingerbread, as if it was baking.... which it wasn't. Finally somebody found a box of frozen gingerbread tucked away in a freezer. Mind you, we sell fish. And meat. And fried foods. And dozens of more products in that same freezer. She could smell through all that!

    I just thought I'd applaud your presentation. A few of the posters say, "Women's bodies are not 'out of control' when these hormones flood the body and amazing changes happen. What you described was exactly how it was for me. While they possibly did not have these seismic changes happening, or were unaware of them, or were already 'possessed' by demons and it was 'no big deal', being pregnant for me was all that you described. AND nothing can be more sudden that being full blown 9 months pregnant one minute then deliver a baby the next and be completely NOT PREGNANT. Now that is a crazy ass situation and takes some women on a roller coaster from hell, in terms of sudden fluctuations in mood and physical being. Good job! Women rock!

      Well what I have noticed from cats is that the find a nice place to give birth as nesting behaviour but because humans give birth in hospitals I guess cleaning and organizing babies things is something to put that behaviour to good use I mean most mammals find the place they’ll give birth in and then stay their with baby(s) until their old enough to go somewhere

      If you get pregnant and give birth just once, your body may go through some insane, very uncomfortable, and sometimes downright shitty changes, but you will also go through some VERY beneficial physiological and psychological changes. For one, your skin will become much clearer and healthier. There are many other benefits, but I'm out of time for today, ladies! Do some research and you will see that I am correct :)

I'm not entirely sure of that facts behind this, but if you have a darker skin color and race, such as Hispanic, indian, African, native American indian, and so forth, then you are more likely to have it and not lose it. my cousins are Mexican and they still have thiers.

      The skin darkening also includes the nipples, areola, armpits, and labia. The nipples and areola enlarge and become darker in all pregnant people, and the color usually fades over time, but they never go back to the way they were before pregnancy. .

      Please consider it if you can do it, we have too many humans already.
      That rather pragmatic view aside, growing up in a foster home is probably the worst way of growing up, including having only one parent. I mean, 0 is distinctly worse than 1.

    • @theincarnationofboredom207
      @theincarnationofboredom207 7 лет назад +2

      well, it is better when you think about it. humans are overpopulated just like dogs and cats, and what do people say about cats and dogs? "adopt don't shop". or, in this case, "adopt, don't create more humans then we need"

  • @Moose_Head
    @Moose_Head 11 лет назад +2

    To address 1:25 :
    I'm no doctor, but it seems a heightened sense of smell would aid in the avoidance of icky things. Olfactory receptors detect certain chemicals in the air, and those most identified as "bad smells" are often produced by potentially harmful creatures. For instance, methane is perceived as unpleasant because we don't want to accidentally eat many of the bacteria which produce it. Heightened smell could have allowed pregnant women to detect smaller quantities of these bacteria, and find cleaner places to gestate or give birth before sterilized delivery rooms were a thing.

    Awesome video ^_^
    Here's one use for morning sickness: it lets the mother know she's still pregnant. I know of several mothers who have had multiple miscarriages (poor ladies) who are grateful for everyday that they are sick, because that means that the baby is still doing well. They get scared if a day comes during that first trimester and they're not sick. They're far more prone to call their OB or midwife right away in that case.

    Do you think the heighten since of smell ties back to cave times? Think about it, you have to stay away from danger and if you could smell a tiger, or what ever animal during those times, the safer you would be and for the baby. A defense mechanism. So if you smell smoke a few feet further away before approaching it, you know you can go a different route to prevent 2nd hand smoke.

    Honestly, my morning sickness has been mostly in response to things that are not good to have near me or my growing koosh. If the kitchen isn't clean I can't go near it. I'll register smells/sights that disgust me without actually taking 100% notice of them and it can take me forever to narrow it down. The worst is that I can't be the one to narrow it down because if I expose myself to the area of disturbance too long I get sick. The great thing about it is that It does keep the house cleaner.

  • @tiff0795
    @tiff0795 10 лет назад

    The whole morning sickness correlation to smell thing relieved me so much because I can't smell anything except super strong things. They're normally so strong I can taste them (molded cat poop, vicks, chlorine) so it's good to know something good could happen about this!

      You say that, but let's be honest, womb envy is only a thing because some woman was offended by the concept of penis envy and had to turn it around.
      I don't know of any man who would rather have a womb. Like, the idea of carrying a baby to term is just awful. Who would want that? How unpleasant is that shit? So unpleasant, right? We're totally okay having penises and all of the other physical and social benefits that come along with having a penis.

    • @SBG812
      @SBG812 11 лет назад +17

      ***** Womb envy has nothing to do with literally wanting a womb (and neither does penis envy for that matter; as you suggested, it's more about the societal benefits, not the anatomy itself). It does, however, explain how men are more obsessed and driven to create a legacy and leave something behind that matters. While women are certainly capable of making lasting impacts on the world, there are few greater achievements that LITERALLY MAKING ANOTHER HUMAN. Women get to do this, so anything else is bonus. Men don't have this, so they spend their lives trying to do something amazing, but subconsciously they know they'll never produce anything as great as what a woman can. THIS is womb envy.

    • @16YOPC

    It has been suggested that the heighten sense of smell is due to a pregnant body being at a heighten risk of susceptibility from food poisoning. With a better sense of smell you can tell if food is spoiling sooner.
    If you think about it this makes a lot of sense, since refrigeration is a fairly recent invention in the history of man kind.
    Interestingly, the elderly is at increased susceptibility for food poisoning due partially to a progressive decrease in sense of smell.

      That wasn't really body shaming language in any way really, since it wasn't saying anything either negative or positive in relation to a woman's body while pregnant, rather offering an observation as to what occurs with the huge number of hormones a woman's body releases when pregnancy occurs. Pregnancy is a perfectly ordinary thing to occur but it isn't a normal state of being for the majority of ones life and as such the extreme changes that do occur can seem out of control in relation to the SOP for a female body.

      blackcatkuroi Nothing is "out of control" in a normal pregnancy. The processes that occur in pregnancy are quite controlled and precise and normal and claiming that women have "totally out of control bodies" in any context is shaming. That just the truth. It is also extremely hypocritical of him to use the word "crazy" in this way when he has another video where he says that word should not be used informally, or at all. So yeah, bad video.

      Alright, I see where you're coming from with the phrase "out of control" and where you could pull the body shaming from that sentence, if that's really what you're digging for here, as there is absolutely nothing shaming at all about this video. The phrase here for "out of control" harkens back to the beginning of the video though, where he states that your body is "capable of a lot of amazing, weird, and unusual stuff whether you want to control that stuff or not." Out of control refers to your control, your conscious control. You ability to control a thing. Pregnancy processes are all done separately from your conscious decisions and oftentimes your body, while undergoing a process that is natural it is also stressful and taxing and uses a lot of the resources a female body produces. It can seem out of control simply because you can't control it consciously, which is why I linked the phrase back to his original statement of you controlling it consciously. You can argue the language point here all you want, and you would have your linguistic ground to stand on, but that was what I took from the statement.

    Grae, its an imperfect world. The best we can do at this point, is keep showing we are not going to be hostile in asking for equality, but show we will be persistant. Its sad though. I thought people were better than that.

    You changed the very nature of RUclips with this video, Hank! Instead of unyielding bickering about religion, we got unyielding bickering about gender. Well done, sir.

    Why is everyone arguing? I never understand this behavior. Hank was merely putting forward some pregnancy facts uncovered by science...
    Anyways, Congrats to all the pregnant ladies here. My Sis is in her 30's & pregnant right now for the first time, it's very exciting! Thanks for the interesting info Scishow.
