I'm a huge advocate of teaching babies simplified sign language. I work with a 17 month old and before he was walking he had already learned simple words like "food" and "more" and even "where/where is it" Tongues are really hard to manipulate and babies are able to understand concepts a lot earlier than they are able to verbalise. A signed language helps babies communicate their needs earlier and also helps with later language acquisition.
My step mother taught simplified sign language when my sister was little and It worked great. They were able to communicate easier and she started to speak verballly at a young age with a great succces. It reduced the number of frustration which children and their mothers have when not understanding each other. I will do this with my children as well.
I am constantly reminded by my baby that if I were in his situation as an adult, I would be constantly freaking out. Waking up in a strange place? New noises and experiences every day with no context to understand them. Discomfort that I can't explain or fix on my own... All I'm saying is babies are extremely chill considering the craziness that is life.

I always find people talking about the genesis of language in children really interesting. I was a “feral kid” (not of the raised by wolves type, but of the extreme neglect/treated like an animal/raised with the family animals/as one of them type), and it took 6-8 years of speech therapy to teach me to talk fluently when that situation stopped. So I still kind of remember learning to talk (something a lot of people seem not to?) because it was later in my childhood than most and such a Weird Experience.
My dad convinced me that every seven years human she'd their skins and that you could use them to buy stuff. I was very confused when my seventh birthday rolled around and I didn't get a skin I could buy stuff with.

As a sufferer of childhood trauma, the neuronal connections interests me. Because, even after 20 years since the onset of the trauma, I can remember some of the worst of it so vividly, and especially the feelings I had at the time, I wonder if my brain kept those pathways open because of the stimulus. I have complex PTSD, and I've heard of theories that childhood onset of PTSD actually rewires the brain due to its plasticity at that age. It sounds like that's the connection.

typically babies leave the uterus once the outside world offers more than being inside the uterus. Babies cry at birth automatically to help them start breathing, not because they want to go back in. (Source: my mother (who is a medical professional) told me this, I was almost born at 26 weeks rather than 40 and so she was told to eat a lot of protein and other things to make the uterus a more hospitable place for me to be.)

I think the weirdest thing for me personally and my development was how my hair changed. I had super curly hair as a baby, toddler, and young child. Then at around 5, it started getting straighter, until by the time I was 6 or 7, I had totally straight hair. Then when I hit puberty? Went super curly again. Now that I'm done with puberty it's not QUITE as curly as it was when I was a teen, but it's still very curly. It's just.... tamer now lol
I experienced something similar. I had curly hair when I was little, in third grade it became straight and in sixth grade the curls grew out after the straight hair! So it was curls with spaghettis at the end.
I have baby blue eyes. Spent 22 years thinking they were just blue. Got into macro photography and decided randomly one day to take a photo of my eye. It has little speckles of gold in the right eye. It's really cool because looking at normally shows no color difference. Eyes also have a very intricate and beautiful pattern about them. Kinda random but pretty cool
when i was about 11, a bunch of my friends and I coded are own alphabet and memorized it. we could read and write it. these days i only remember a couple letters. Use or loose it I guess

My hair and eyes changed color after I was born. I also apparently made up my own language (I was speeking words just not in any language my parents or anyone around me knew) as I learned to speek English. According to my mom when I first started at preschool she would get asked if I was adopted since according to them I had an accent .
I started to talk at 1, then at 2 completely stopped for a year. I only pointed and grunted until 3 when I suddenly started talking in complete sentences and taught myself to read a tiny bit. Humans are weird.
I used to have really brown eyes until I was about 14 or something, when I noticed my eyes becoming paler. Now I have grey/blue/greenish eyes with a brown circle around my pupils.
That melanin thing happened to one of my brothers. When he was born he had goldilocks which was really weird and I guess somebody thought it was a product of an affair but nope, years later his hair became black and straight... which is weird. Well I think the reason for all languages having things like verbs and nouns is more of a thing about describing and differentiating actions and objects because otherwise you as an example couldn't hold apart a bird and a plane who both fly or you wouldn't be able to pinpoint their similarities since you don't have the word flying to describe it, so it might be hard wired into us but only because it is a necessary thing to have in a language in order for it to cover the needed complexity of the human communication

My eye color changed up until I was a junior in high school. Weirdly, my eyes went from mainly brown to mainly green. I also have central heterochromia, though, which might be part of why my eye color is wacky. The genes controlling my eye color is wacky.
My hair colour changed twice. I was born with dark brown, almost black, hair but it quickly lightened to blonde. It gradually darkened back to brown though around my early teens and that's what I'm stuck with now. Eyes stayed brown throughout though.

Trough my childhood I used to use words I tought were made up stuff, much later learned those were real words from a language only my grandma was fluent in, I was never introduced to it formally and don't remember hearing those words particularly from her yet somehow they popped in my mind from time to time, not their meaning but their composition even their proper accenctuation

In regards to eye colour, what about people who have changing eye colours all their life? Not to sound like a fanfic Mary-Sue, but aside from one rust-coloured ring around my pupils, my eye colour shifts between green, blue, and grey. My mother's eyes also switch from shades of blue and grey, while my father and both my sisters have brown eyes. Most days, my eyes settle in the green-grey realm. I'm 27, and it still shifts regularly. Is it a fluctuating level of melanin? Or what? I've also seen this trait in a few other adult friends, and I've always wondered about it.

How do I know I had an ovary. It became malignant with stage three cancer, that's how.

My first cancer was in 1997 and took the form of testicular-ovarian type cancer. I’ve always seen myself as being gender fluid because of my sexual development. Chemo and cancer surgeries took of my female type organs and some of the male organs. Over the the years the need to present as some form of female has been strong. My remaining testis has never worked well and I cannot take estrogen because it could cause the hormone driven ovarian cancer to return. I will not take testosterone as my personality is female. My phycologist suggested plastic surgery to look more feminine. My insurance may not pay and advance form of surgery is more that we can afford. No easy answers
I am one of those people whose eye color changed ar puberty; up until 13 yo I had dark brown eyes since then the color changed to very light hazel with green outer ring. My hair color got lighter too but my eyebrows kept their dark color. My dad has green eyes and is rather blond and mom has dark brown eyes. Talk about epigenetics and how hormones switch genes on and off. It's marvelous how the body works, don't you think?
Not all linguists buy the innate grammar thing. There's perfectly good evidence that children are just capable of analyzing stimuli and working out how language works through trial and error. I mean, that's what they would need to do even if they did have an innate grammar because all languages have different grammars. The similarities between human languages can be explained by them all being very very distantly related to each other. In fact if children did have an innate grammar you would assume there would be more similarities between languages.
fun fact! cats also do the entire eye color change (born with blue eyes, change later) thing. around rthe first... 2 or so weeks after opening their eyes, kittens eye colors will normally change to a different color, unless they have white on their body (as cats need white on them to have blue eyes, normally over 30% white i think, however people are working on a breed of cat that can have blue eyes with little to no white!)

The title actually describes the content of the video pretty well. It is true that, like Buzzfeed articles, the video itself is a list of weird things. But I don't think that's a reason to dislike the video.
Item #2. I wonder if that's what causes the isolated kids to never gain the ability to speak, or it's very basic. If their brain never used those neurons, it makes sense that they would've been broken off and dissolved. This could mean that there may never be a way to repair the damage that was done to those children. It makes the crime of their parents even more horrific. Luckily it doesn't happen (isn't reported?) very often.

My mum, my daughter and I rarely shiver when we are cold. We get an 'electrical' feeling go down through our body from our heads to just past our hips. Just after that we give one big shudder and that's all.
When I was little (I don't remember exactly at what age, but I was younger than 4 years), and my aunt called us on the phone, I answered it. Instead of saying hello or her name, I said "ears" (but in greek). I think I said that because I put the phone on my ear (like everyone does). That was really weird. I didn't know I said something wrong at that time, but a few years later when I grew up, I understood that I said something really weird. Now that I'm done with puberty it's not QUITE as curly as it was when I was a teen, but it's still very curly. It's just.... tamer now lol
I experienced something similar. I had curly hair when I was little, in third grade it became straight and in sixth grade the curls grew out after the straight hair! So it was curls with spaghettis at the end.
I have an adult friend who got a parasite in Africa (he was cured) but as a result, or coincidentally, his hair became permanently curly.
I have baby blue eyes. Spent 22 years thinking they were just blue. Got into macro photography and decided randomly one day to take a photo of my eye. It has little speckles of gold in the right eye. It's really cool because looking at normally shows no color difference. Eyes also have a very intricate and beautiful pattern about them. Kinda random but pretty cool

My hair and eyes changed color after I was born. I also apparently made up my own language (I was speeking words just not in any language my parents or anyone around me knew) as I learned to speek English. According to my mom when I first started at preschool she would get asked if I was adopted since according to them I had an accent .
I started to talk at 1, then at 2 completely stopped for a year. I only pointed and grunted until 3 when I suddenly started talking in complete sentences and taught myself to read a tiny bit. Humans are weird.
I used to have really brown eyes until I was about 14 or something, when I noticed my eyes becoming paler. Now I have grey/blue/greenish eyes with a brown circle around my pupils.

When he was born he had goldilocks which was really weird and I guess somebody thought it was a product of an affair but nope, years later his hair became black and straight... which is weird.
And as for me, it was kinda the opposite thing. My hair started black but it didn't turn into golden hair, instead my hair was straight, really straight and in recent years, about age 17 or so (I'm currently 22) my hair started to curl.

The first one happened to me, I used to have big blue eyes, but at the age of 8 or 9 they became green (my hair became darker, too. it's now very dark brown instead of just brown)
Well I think the reason for all languages having things like verbs and nouns is more of a thing about describing and differentiating actions and objects because otherwise you as an example couldn't hold apart a bird and a plane who both fly or you wouldn't be able to pinpoint their similarities since you don't have the word flying to describe it, so it might be hard wired into us but only because it is a necessary thing to have in a language in order for it to cover the needed complexity of the human communication

Generally speaking, I'm amazed at how much knowledge kids can hold, and I how eagerly curious their minds are. Child prodigies are a brilliant unique bunch. Their minds and gifts are highly advance, yet at the same time, they are just regular kids. Fascinating.
My eye color changed up until I was a junior in high school. Weirdly, my eyes went from mainly brown to mainly green. I also have central heterochromia, though, which might be part of why my eye color is wacky. The genes controlling my eye color is wacky.

My hair colour changed twice. I was born with dark brown, almost black, hair but it quickly lightened to blonde. It gradually darkened back to brown though around my early teens and that's what I'm stuck with now. Eyes stayed brown throughout though.

Trough my childhood I used to use words I tought were made up stuff, much later learned those were real words from a language only my grandma was fluent in, I was never introduced to it formally and don't remember hearing those words particularly from her yet somehow they popped in my mind from time to time, not their meaning but their composition even their proper accenctuation

In regards to eye colour, what about people who have changing eye colours all their life? Not to sound like a fanfic Mary-Sue, but aside from one rust-coloured ring around my pupils, my eye colour shifts between green, blue, and grey. My mother's eyes also switch from shades of blue and grey, while my father and both my sisters have brown eyes. Most days, my eyes settle in the green-grey realm. I'm 27, and it still shifts regularly. Is it a fluctuating level of melanin? Or what? I've also seen this trait in a few other adult friends, and I've always wondered about it.

Six months ago I found out that I carry the genes for both ovarian and breast cancer. My first cancer was in 1997 and took the form of testicular-ovarian type cancer. I’ve always seen myself as being gender fluid because of my sexual development. Chemo and cancer surgeries took of my female type organs and some of the male organs. Over the the years the need to present as some form of female has been strong. My remaining testis has never worked well and I cannot take estrogen because it could cause the hormone driven ovarian cancer to return. I will not take testosterone as my personality is female. My phycologist suggested plastic surgery to look more feminine. My insurance may not pay and advance form of surgery is more that we can afford.

I am one of those people whose eye color changed ar puberty; up until 13 yo I had dark brown eyes since then the color changed to very light hazel with green outer ring. My hair color got lighter too but my eyebrows kept their dark color. My dad has green eyes and is rather blond and mom has dark brown eyes. Talk about epigenetics and how hormones switch genes on and off. It's marvelous how the body works, don't you think?

Not all linguists buy the innate grammar thing. There's perfectly good evidence that children are just capable of analyzing stimuli and working out how language works through trial and error. I mean, that's what they would need to do even if they did have an innate grammar because all languages have different grammars. The similarities between human languages can be explained by them all being very very distantly related to each other. In fact if children did have an innate grammar you would assume there would be more similarities between languages.

Item #2. I wonder if that's what causes the isolated kids to never gain the ability to speak, or it's very basic. If their brain never used those neurons, it makes sense that they would've been broken off and dissolved. This could mean that there may never be a way to repair the damage that was done to those children. It makes the crime of their parents even more horrific. Luckily it doesn't happen (isn't reported?) very often.

When I was little (I don't remember exactly at what age, but I was younger than 4 years), and my aunt called us on the phone, I answered it. Instead of saying hello or her name, I said "ears" (but in greek). I think I said that because I put the phone on my ear (like everyone does). That was really weird.
