I was kinda confused about the name Theobromine since the molecule doesn't contain any bromine atoms. It turns out that the name comes from the greek words "theos" ("god") and "broma" ("food"), so the name literally means "food of the gods". So chocolate literally contains godly ingredients :D
My Mock Trial coach in high school was allergic to chocolate, so when we asked him what he thought chocolate would tasted like, he just replied: "Death."
sometimes I am really happy to live in Belgium because we apparently have more or less the best chocolate from around the world, or at least that is what people say I myself haven't really tasted other than Belgian chocolate (I've had chocolate from Spain but it really isn't as good as the chocolate we usually have). And I myself must have chocolate sprinkles on my bread every morning it is pretty much the only thing I like to eat in the morning together with my cup of chocolate milk.
HugThePolice well if u don't live in Belgium it is but for me I can get some cheap (but still VERY good) chocolate. but indeed the best like cote d'or is quite expensive but really worth it :). mmm mmm mmmmmmmmmm
boomerangfreak I've lived in switzerland and the chocolate is also pretty delicious there... and it's less expensive than the chocolate from Belgium...
The word "Chocolate" comes from the Nahuatl (Aztec's Language) word "Xocolatl" and they used to make a dish called "Mole" which actually is still prepared in Mexico. The first to include sugar to the Xocolatl were the Spanish, the rest is history...
Vico Chocolate is a South/Latin American plant, so not an Italian invention. But it wasn't the Spanish who invented the modern chocolate, it was the Dutch.

As a diabetic I only allow myself real chocolate on my birthday. I do occasionally eat sugar-free chocolate but it is hard to find good stuff and it is actually fattier than the real thing.
tetsubo57 I would suggest Splenda, but most diabetics can't actually eat that either as they use maltodextrin to give the product volume and that is digestible and causes a spike in people with insulin resistance.
Bribing people with chocolate? GENIUS! Awesome episode! I wish that you added the fact that Cocoa or Cocao starts off very bitter and all of the sweeteners and fat is what usually makes Chocolate more desirable. Most people think that chocolate is sweet, but it's actually very bitter.
Hey, cool video. Just a simple correction, not all chocolate has milk fat added. In fact, most high end chocolates (fancy wrappers and generally over 70% cacao) only have cacao, cocoa butter and sugar. Larger brands will also use alkaline in the process. But milk fat is only used for milk chocolate. At least, that's my understanding.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention the alkaloid and psychoactive stimulant phenethylamine that chocolate contains. PEA (phenethylamine) is used to manufacture many pharmaceutical and recreational drugs. It is also known as the "love drug" because you're body secretes it when you are nervous and first falling in love with someone. There is an amazing book called PiHKAL that is based all around the drug and it's many substitutes.
Yeah, when i first clicked on this, i was expecting to see the alkaloid too... Maybe they simplified this video, or debunked it?? I believed in that alkaloid too... :(
+Hewro 123 well theres always carab and i have my suspicions most chocolate over here in america isnt actually chocolate....man im so sorry ill pour out a cup of chocolate milk for you.
Terrie Moulton I don't care for it either. I don't dislike it, but I don't really enjoy eating a normal amount of it. I generally will turn down candy that is mostly chocolate, like a chocolate bar. I'd just take a bite or two, then unless someone else wants to eat after me it would get wasted.
Yaassss got me some white chocolate today and I will treat myself to it later with some of my favorite music Delta Parole and Brendon Urie turned up loud!
Your awesome hank! I wish you were my science teacher you make science so much fun and I laugh through many of your videos. I've learned far more things like this than I do in a class room. I'm quite curious why that is but it's fun ^.^
I know that this is an old video but especially relevant to me today. I got a free chocolate chip cookie today. I have been chocolate free for a while. I know that I can't eat just two chocolate cookies. When I eat any chocolate something goes off in my brain to make me want more and more. I'm not addicted to anything else. Just chocolate. There has to be something in it to cause this craving.
I really like SciShow because it explains things with concrete and sources but most of all because i always crack laughing with rhis guy haha keep going i support you
Smart. I like that. You needed a commercial for your chocolates so you made a whole show for you commercial and sneak the chocolate in at the end. Nice.
If cats can't taste sweatiness, than why do so many people say cats will drink anti-freeze because it is sweat. Is that just a myth, or do cats actually drink it if someone leaves spilled anti-freeze on the floor?
Dogs tend to drink anti-freeze because it's sweet. Cats may mistake it as merely water. They also tend to eat sweet treats because it contains fat and they like fat. The reason cats can't taste sweetness is because they split off from the early ancestor of Bears back when they were strictly carnivorous but dogs split off a short while later (despite bears having more genes similar to a cat than dogs,). This gives dogs and bears a long snout, long tongue, and a taste for berries that never seemed to go away in dogs despite going on to become almost strictly carnivorous again. That taste for sweets came in handy once they were domesticated but doesn't serve a lot of purpose in wild dogs.
My old poodle ate an entire plate of brownies when she was 7, ate an entire chocolate bar at age 11, and lived to be almost 16 years old. She amazed even the vets. Not every dog dies from it.
So we should abandon ethics for the sake of profit? Haven't you heard of the "not in Harry's name" campaign, which is allegedly supported by Hank Green?
Was wondering about vitamin supplements and whether or not they work. Heard in the news again about them and wondered what Sci-Show might think on the matter.
Dark chocolate is the best. None of that sugary milk chocolate crap. Chocolate is like coffee. If you need to add milk and sugar, then it is not good coffee. Savor the organic state of chocolate.
If you put fake sugar and fake milk sure, coffee will taste like crap. But full-fat milk and REAL sugar? Yeah, it's still good coffee then. As long as you don't DROWN the coffee in the milk and sugar though.
IceQueen975 The quality of the milk and sugar is irrelevant to what she is saying. She is saying that coffee and chocolate do not need milk and sugar to be savory or palatable. You are known to have an uncultured, unrefined taste when you need to add unnecessary ingredients to a perfectly fine product. Black coffee, dark chocolate, dry wine, bold beer, uber stinky cheese -- leave it alone. Be open to its unaltered taste.
***** Oh I know there are many who prefer black coffee and dark chocolate like my best friend. I just don't think it's fair to say those who prefer either with sugar and milk (like myself) have no taste; we just have a different taste and neither is better then the other.
My grandparents has a dog. And guess what? It eats chocolate. Seriously, it does. It's been fed chocolate since its early life and now it's 6 years old. I am confused why nothing lethal is happening to it.
Dogs are like people and every other living thing in that EACH DOG IS UNIQUE. Some people are allergic to milk while most are fine with it for example. We say this is good or bad for a species based on how it affects the vast majority of it.
okay firstly, if you live in america, the chocolate is most likely 99% milk or 99% artificial flavoring. not a lot of theobromine. secondly, they might not be giving them enough chocolate to be lethal. you probably have to feed a dog a 1 pound bag of dark chocolate to kill it. though i'm not legally responsible if you feed your dog chocolate and it dies or gets sick.
Chocolate isn't sweet at all. It is bitter, very bitter. There is an old stereotypical poster that was made showcasing cultural stimulants: a Turkish man with his coffee, a Chinese man with his tea, and a heathen of the New World with his bitter chocolate drink. It wasn't until wide cultivation of sugar cane in Europe that chocolate was sweetened. It was traditionally prepared bitter, with some roasted chilis to offset the bitterness. As for cats and dogs... Forget the sweetness in our modern day chocolate... theobromine, like caffeine is an alkaloid. And like all the other naturally occuring alkaloids in plants, they taste bitter. Some more toxic than others, bitterness is likely a tell tale sign that something may be toxic and should be avoided. Cats can detect the bitterness, and are thus... not that into chocolate. Dogs on the other hand, they may have evolved so close alongside humans that they may have evolved taste receptors for sweetness, even though they are carnivores like cats. On the palette, sweet mutes bitter, and may very well also mute the warning signal in a dogs brain, hence why dogs may like to eat chocolate. They taste the sweet of a chocolate candy first, and any hint of the bitter alkaloid goes undetected. There was some problems with the information about this episode, but still a good watch nevertheless.
It's weird, how my cat just goes after chocolate like crazy. If I leave a doughnut that has chocolate on it, on a table, my cat immediately tries to lick the chocolate off. Same goes for jaffa cakes, he always tries to lick the chocolate off. Since I know it's bad for cats, I don't let him do that, but I can't watch over him all the time, so he gets away with it from time to time.
My cat loves peanuts and especially peanut butter. Weird as. I don't get too worried if they get into chocolate. I looked it up once, and the LD50 was something like 1/16th of the animal's body weight in baker's chocolate, so my cat would need to eat like a whole pound of milk chocolate, and I can't even do that.
Great video except one thing: you said Theobroma and Ilex are "cousins" which isn't true. The Ilex' and Theobroma are NOT closely related. Ilex is in Aquifoliacaea and Theobroma in Malvaceae.
I used chocolate to quit smoking. Well, I quit with the patch but got off the patch with chocolate. Every time I had a craving I would eat a piece of chocolate and soon my body started having cravings for chocolate. Gained some weight but haven't had tobacco for over 7 years, now.
Uh...my dog eats chocolate... a LOT. He's been eating chocolate since he was 1 year old, and has even eaten one of my extra-large family-sized chocolate bars by himself when he got into the cupboard. Is he abnormal? Or is he NOT A DOG?
Quazz Princeton My great grandmother's chihuahua absolutely loved chocolate too. It seems sometimes dogs can handle it. Even though smaller dogs are extremely susceptible to chocolate poisoning, it could eat entire bars of chocolate with no problem.
Recently you've been covering all my favourite interests, poo, coffee, chocolate, and trash. Ok maybe the last one not so much but you have catching my attention lately.
+grimelex i think women have more sweet taste receptors than men do of course that hasn't stopped me from being a chocolate black hole from which not even dark chocolate can escape
I believe there is an interesting science aspect to the crystallisation process of chocolate coatings. Professional chocolate coating is crisp and has an almost shiny surface, whereas home coatings often end in coagulation or a softer, matt surface. The extend to which my hear say knowledge reaches is that a specific heating/cooling cycle is required to form a single crystal for the end product. This might be the topic for another science of chocolate video :)
I was kinda confused about the name Theobromine since the molecule doesn't contain any bromine atoms.
It turns out that the name comes from the greek words "theos" ("god") and "broma" ("food"), so the name literally means "food of the gods". So chocolate literally contains godly ingredients :D

Thank you for looking this up and sharing it!
Is it just me or did Hank sound adorable when he said "Poor kitties, they can't taste sweetness."?
Wow. I made top comment. Cool. :D
He sounded adorable, because he is adorable. Also: "This one has peppermint on it." 😊
Just you. I wanted to strangle him.
Autumn the Border Collie Hank is an adorable person. Reminds me of a puppy.
IKR HE IS JUST ADORABLE!!
A nice benefit of being human is the ability to enjoy chocolate. Win. :)

Rhyannon Ashford funny, for that same reason i call avocados death fruit.
Chocolate logic: Take something extremely bitter; add lots of sugar.
Gotta be alert!
Omg I love those Milano cookies with the bits of candy cane!

how do artificial sweeteners work for you?

This is very late. Like, 7 years late. But I eat unsweetened baking chocolate. It's actually really yummy. And doesn't bother my blood sugar.
This was both the longest and bestest ad for a chocolate bar I've ever seen.

why was this deleted then added again?
Because what's better than a video of the New Year about chocolate?
that doesnt explain why it was deleted.....
Dark Red Scorpion It was submitten at 31 and they said, "fuck it", and re posted it as a video to start of the year.
Happy New Year, Hank and SciShow team! Great video to bring in the new year. Can't wait to see what science will bring in 2014!
FUN FACT "Theobroma" means "Food of the Gods."
CTVadim and chocolate comes from “Xoco atl” which means bitter water in nahuatl, the language of the aztecs.

And chocolate.
Yes, as weird as it may seem, there are people that hate chocolate.
Happy New Year's Everyone!
cat can't taste sweetness?? no wonder they are so grumpy all the time.
As the video mentions chocolate is toxic to both dogs and even cats so never ever give it to them⚠️
Aww that was cute! =3 "Poor kitties, they can't taste sweetness." that was so cute!

Hershey's != chocolate.
Have you had milk chocolate?
I can't eat more than one bite. I also dislike those people who just buy a completely chocolate cake it tastes awful.

What is the best chocolate to eat? And what if u ate milk chocolate, what is the right amount to eat? I would like an answer to these questions
nice christopher walken impression at the beginning there, hank.
Can you do a video on what cold pressing is and how it impacts foods? Thanks SciShow!
Happy New Year, Hank!!!
Can you make an episode about the science of chronological order of siblings? How it genetically and socially affects who they are?
Hank is so nerdhot! Love the guy!
*immediately searches for chocolate around me*
I believe there is an interesting science aspect to the crystallisation process of chocolate coatings. Professional chocolate coating is crisp and has an almost shiny surface, whereas home coatings often end in coagulation or a softer, matt surface. The extend to which my hear say knowledge reaches is that a specific heating/cooling cycle is required to form a single crystal for the end product. This might be the topic for another science of chocolate video :)
it's BHT
