    The Oberheim OB-X Synthesizer from 1978 is one of the legendary synths in music history. Used by Ultravox, Japan, Killing Joke, J.-M. Jarre, Rush, Barcley James Harvest and others. Here can you find the full OB-X playlist with a lot single sound demos, synth comparisions and one synth demo tracks. Enjoy.

    That thing sounds BAD ASS. I was just old enough to appreciate synth in the 80's, but too young to acquire any gear. These sounds come from a perfect moment in the Universe.

    There truly was a golden age of syths... something was in the air, the componentry was all ultra-hifi quality, and the circuit boards built by hand, sometimes even by their designers (Moog, Dave Smith...)...a million little things + insane passion and competition, plus all sorts of happy accidents and we got an explosion of awesomeness. There is NO DOUBT that instruments of this era were/are peerless and probably irreproducible...literally like Stradivarius or Guarneri violins. EMS-VCS3, CS-80, P5 & P10, OBx, PPG Wave, and of course the various early Moogs and modulars...Not a single synth since ~ 1980 (with the exception of the ultra-cool & quirky Buchla modular line) has had anywhere close to the soul these things possessed. It's a classic story of hand-built-boutique excellence Vs mass-produced garbage. I sure hope someone has a few of each in a temperature & humidity controlled vault so that posterity can have a shot at reproducing the music made with these crazy beasts!!!

    In the first 2 patches leading up to 1:50, I could hear almost everything Oberheim that I’ve always enjoyed from Prince & the Revolution, Neil Diamond, Styx, Weather Report, Chicago, REO Speedwagon, Toto, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Rush, Van Halen and anyone that played an Oberheim polyphonic synth before my first day of Elementary School in 1985.

    • @79Glitch
      @79Glitch 3 года назад +1

      I guess you have a lot to learn. If you’re into synths, literally every legendary synth is from the 70’s and 80’s. And there’s a good reason why this synth or something like a OB8 or Matrix 12 is 4 times the price of a brand new 2021 OB6 (which is already around $2,500 new):
      Modern synth manufactures can’t re-create the sound of those earlier synths because the parts and circuits are no longer available or are in such short supply that it’s not an option. So the older synths actually do sound better in many cases.
      You might want to look into some other classics from this time period: Minimoog model d, Yamaha CS-80, Roland Jupiter 8 are a good place to start. Or you could buy all three for around $50,000 (if you’re lucky) and try them out first hand.

    • @bengsynthmusic
      @bengsynthmusic 2 года назад

      @@79Glitch
      There was a period were old synths were seen as corny (somewhere in the 90s). A lot of them were ridiculously low priced. But the surge in price has more to do with people wanting to go vintage and nostalgia after the late 2000s.

    • @79Glitch
      @79Glitch 2 года назад +1

      @@bengsynthmusic I just wish I was a little older with disposable cash in the ‘90’s. Some of my favorite musicians/producers like El-P built their production styles around classics like the CS-80, which he copped in New York for some absurdly low price. Something like that will NEVER happen again, even if prices flatten out and become a little more reasonable. And I don’t feel like the new modern synths are rare enough to have that massive jump in value comparatively because people love synths so much today … I think they’re just going to keep making newer, bigger, better hardware and software synths for a long time to come. That one stretch you mentioned in the ‘90’s-when FM and digital and samplers took over-was the one time we could get a good deal on those golden era analog synths. Hopefully you had more luck and better timing than me!

    • @bengsynthmusic
      @bengsynthmusic 2 года назад

      @@79Glitch
      Oh I'm just a young 20 something enthusiast who hadn't had such opportunity and just settled for emulations. My best chance of vintage is copping DX7. The most offensive market I've seen is Jupiter 08 going for double triple what CS-80 goes for. Which's funny bc I don't see CS-80 up anywhere, yet they cost less.

    • @79Glitch
      @79Glitch 2 года назад

      @@bengsynthmusic I guess we have to look at the bright side: this is one of the most interesting time for synths because of the demand, the software innovations, the affordable hardware emulations, etc. And most of the big companies are sympathetic to enthusiast’s love of the vintage synths, so they are making new synths with that idea in mind. Hopefully there will continue to be inspiring options for years to come, and maybe some new classics. That said, Moog, Sequential/DSI, Korg … they all seem to “get it” in terms of vintage analog sound.
      And I support you in acquiring a DX7. Life is short, so never feel guilty about trying to live the dream!
      And Jup 8 is over-rated from everyone I’ve heard-in person or otherwise-especially considering the absurd price.
      DX7 is beast for pads, though; and I love the DX7 bass! I think I’m going to end up with one, too.

    Really shows how much DSI et al have compromised to get modern polysynths into an affordable realm. No comparison (if you can pay for it).

  • @soriacx
    @soriacx 6 лет назад +1

    Rightfully one of the big famous synths of the early 80s (although I'm more of a Sequential fan...), but definitely not the worst synth from Oberheim ;-) Although I'm uncertain if it is OBs best synth altogether, they made some tough competition with the Matrix 12 and the good old Four-/Eightvoice, even if you can call the OB-X a Fourvoice with memory :-)

    • @retrosound72
      @retrosound72  6 лет назад

      yes synths are a matter of taste. prophet , chroma...all are kings. for me is the X the synth with the best sound.

    • @n8goulet
      @n8goulet 6 лет назад

      I think the X is probably the best one to have. Since I cover other bands music in my band, the OB-X series are featured on more albums I would think than other Oberheim synths, and the X is perfectly capable of reproducing most of the famous SEM based synths like the Four Voice.

    • @soriacx
      @soriacx 6 лет назад

      Yes, the X trumps the Xa soundwise, but sadly it lacks one very unique element of an old Fourvoice, the individual voices. The Fourvoice wasn't just a synth with four voices, it was a big box with four synths. Granted, that was hell to set up and in no way a reliable option for live playing or for anyone who wants consistency, but the individually tuned voices were the thing that made the Fourvoice so amazingly unique ;-)
      That's why I think the Fourvoice trumps the OBX, which is not an easy task. But the four or even eight voice is just a bigger monster than the OBX.
      It's like saying to one-up a Minimoog, which is arguably a monster on its own. It is possible, but you need a bigger monster than that, which would be a Model 55 modular system ;-)

    Great synth! An actual hardware analog synth I owned back in the late eighties was the Octave Cat. I have both the OB-Xd and Mini Moog virtual soft synths. There is a 10 minute performance of me using the OB-Xd titled "Rob's Tangerine Dream Style Performance" on RUclips.

      My friend had a Matrix 6 and I played it many times with his 1000 included patches.
      My Casio CZ-101 had more in common in sound with the Oberheim OB-X than a Matrix 6 did. It didn't seem capable of reproducing any of the famous OB sounds I was looking for, especially the lead sounds. Matrix 6 I believe was Gibson made and Tom Oberheim had nothing to do with it. Oberheim in name.
      I think I made the right choice in 1986. I was much more impressed with the sounds I was getting than those in his Matrix 6. He not only spent many times what I did, but they were so poorly made his spent more time at the factory for repairs than it got in use. And my friend was an electronics repair expert.
      Were you able to load in some sound collections that didn't come from the factory?
      The sounds I'm hearing in the video were nothing like my memory of hearing those Matrix 6 sounds. Matrix 12 was a different animal though.

    • @agerven
      @agerven 6 лет назад +1

      @n8goulet: As far as I know, it was an actual Oberheim and Gibson had nothing to do with it. Matrix 1000 might be another story though.
      Of course there are differences between the Matrix 6 and the OB-X, most important of them being that the Matrix series used Digital controlled, though analog core, oscillators. Another one is the extended programmable modulation matrix, which is not present in the OB-X, -8, etc.
      So you can't expect to pick a sound from the OB-X, transfer its parameters to the Matrix 6 and get a comparable sound. That's true. In this video the OB-X is passed, slightly but clearly, through some effects. When attempting a comparable sound on the Matrix 6 you'll have a very hard time. But using the modulation matrix on the Matrix 6 you may come very close.
      Concluding, you're correct obviously. The Matrix 6 and OB-X are different synths, with different oscillators and a different architecture. I like them both, and the OB-X is awesome as demonstrated in this video. Thanks for that Retrosound!

      What do you guys think about the current versions of the OB-X from Dave Smith?
      I played one of them at Guitar Center and it didn't sound this good, but I'm not sure if I'm falling for the "analogue hype" that the hipsters are peddling these days or not.

    • @wavelengthrecords-1
      @wavelengthrecords-1 6 лет назад +1

      Totigerus Name one thing in your entire life that is supposed to be the copy of something that has actually been better than the original. Analog cannot be truly copied by digital. Period. They are two different animals completely. These early analog synths have internal design that create a sound that is unmatchable in feeling. They affect more than just the ears with simple sound. They have soul that is missing from VST's and most newer analog synths. Bells and whistles aside, going on pure sound, original old school analog, particularly polysynths, cannot be matched or beaten for warmth and uniqueness of quality. I love digital synths too though.
