@@davesmith6794 Rush didn't have the OB-X on Hemispheres, as the synth wouldn't come out until the year after the album's release. They did use it on Moving Pictures (the Tom Sawyer growl, probably also the chords in The Camera Eye) and Signals (Subdivisions, The Analog Kid, Countdown, probably more).
Always loved the huge sound of this monster. For me there is no 'best' analog synth as they all have pros and cons. I do have a fondness for the P5 and JP8 though
back in the old days where I'm from, they designed synths that sound very nice without concern for roadies backs. those oberheims were damn heavy ;got hot when left on for a few hours. like loading a casket full of lead. the sound live....oh my. a well record analog device is great but live is where they shine
Yep. Heard both Van Halen and Rush in the brass sound. I'd guess they both took the brass preset and tweaked it a bit to get the sound from Jump and I'll Wait as well as the sounds used throughout Moving Pictures and Signals, though I believe he found or got very close to the settings Geddy might have used for Witch Hunt in a different demo of this absolute monster.
Faszination pur!!
Vielen Dank @retrosound72! :) ruclips.net/video/dQzth1wRO9Y/видео.html
Awesome old analog sounds, throughout "old component signature", Definitely divine "filtered sound" with this superb OB-X... Excellent coming weekend to you with new analog surprising inspirations ! ;-))
The best polyphonic Oberheim, next to the 8 Voice. The other "Curtis" ones after that, I like a little less. I just wish that my OB6 had 8 voices and individual panning, not this fixed spread pattern...
Oh, interesting. I was always under the assumption (and also read this) that the OB-Xa was used for "Jump". It does sound like it to me. Or is it a different album you are referring to?
I never understood why the Xa is more popular than this one. To me, having a Curtis makes the Xa less unique sounding and closer to other options like Prophets.
fantastic demo. dunno how i missed it till now. favorite moment: 6:38 Sun comes up..;) its the type of sound that compelled me to get the ob-x in the first place. sad and somber quality like no other machine. well that, and intro to Tangram Set 2 ;)
Tis true! I may never kiss a beautiful she Robot, whilst travelling through the stratosphere. But in my sound imagination! Well the dream becomes intertwined with reality!!!!
Wow. The 80s had a good laugh on us. Some genius marketing wiz started recording the rich kid losers that would never amount to anything while they got high and f**cked around on their OB-X for a few hours because it sounded cool and convinced us that it was new age musical enlightenment played only the wise elevated souls that were worthy of its message. Ah hahahahaha!!!! (But shit, it really was cool to get really high and listen through your headphones as you floated on your water bed so, all is forgiven,) ;) Thanks for posting the video!
I know the band Queen used the OBX on the "Flash Gordon" soundtrack and "Hot Space" album. Rush used the OB-X (and OBXa) on the "Moving Pictures" and "Signals" albums.
Prince used OBX on his albums from 1979-1984. The group he founded and produced The Time use OBX on their first album. Back in 1980. Just graduated from High School I wanted this synthesizer so badly?
Moogs are lead guitars they want to be heard above all. I love the OBX and the CS 80. But for lead I love the mini moog. Would not sell the obx. Really want a CS 80.
That's a synth! This filter design sings. Where can I get the circuit layouts? I have to solder one myself and see where the magic is located. Nice demo btw!
You are a pro. I say that because you are able to tweak the sounds in a way that gives it nice um is the word reverb? What I'm trying to say is that the tunes don't sound so yuck when others experiment with it.
@@retrosound72 NO. Van Halen used the OB-Xa on Jump which had completely different (i.e. Curtis vs discrete) oscillator and filter circuitry. Dude where do you find these synths in such mint condition? Did you buy these new back in the day and keep them under armed guards 😉 I had the OBXa back in the day, sold it for US $400.00 in 1988 (a fair price to get for it back then) Never really regretted selling it till I saw what they are selling for now days on ebay 😳 Thanks for the memories.
The sound of a future that never happened and never will, and that we still continue to dream of.
:)
Out of every synth Oberheim ever made, this one is my favorite. I know that is saying a lot, but this sounds so rich and lush.
:))
My Rush loving heart is melting... Oberheim oh my god 💙
:)
I love the sound of this all over Hemispheres!

I think these synths became iconic because of the way they were used by many talented musicians producers
Very expensive and so only for studios or groups with money
Greatest Synth ever made. It is even better than the later releases of Oberheim Synths OB-X is the best.
Synthesizers like this one were a force to be reckoned with.
:))
Especially the force required to carry them up & down the stairs in/out the club you were gigging at! 😁
This beast has the S.E.M filters which give it that pure oberheim sound were as after the obx they used the Curtis ladder filters.

incredible sounds you have made here sir, the ending was emotional.

Didn't Van Halen use a OB-Xa? Both are great though!
on the album he used OBX. on tour he used obxa because it's more stable and holds tuning better
