The Oberheim OB-X Synthesizer from 1978 is one of the legendary synths in music history. Used by Ultravox, Japan, Killing Joke, J.-M. Jarre, Rush, Barcley James Harvest and others. Here can you find the full OB-X playlist with a lot single sound demos, synth comparisions and one synth demo tracks. Enjoy. The OB-X playlist ----> ruclips.net/p/PLe08Lbpy8pPbR3dUZoZjD7AV-J36-EOB5
200 great synths and combinations. 200 vid's of great playing style and good demo's. by watching your video's i started to love those good old analog dreams, keep them for life, one day you will only find cold sounding workstations and digi-synths in the stores, if that day comes we can say: i am glad i bought those good old analog synths.
For me, the thing that makes this synth so special is that it is the sounds of Flash Gordon, from 1980. Ming's theme, the square-wave lead on Arboria, etc. It was also used for many of the sound effects - weapons, ships, Ming's hypnosis ring, etc. As a little kid, I remember watching it and wondering what the hell I was hearing.
no doubt this is one the best sounding 8 voice even going about long before the jp8 brings a big smile on my face thanks marko u play it great know the sounds well :)
I like the Sonic Projects OP-X. It doesn't sound exactly like an OB-X or OB-8, but it's close and with EQ it's almost impossible to tell the difference. Tape saturation helps too, Variety of Sound ThrillseekerVBL is the best I've found.
I think there are some pretty good VST's out there, and with that said you can keep them. I really don't think you can reproduce the randomness of electricity with a digital program. This synth is one of the most amazing machines ever built.
Amazing sounding synth. I'm not that familiar with all the famous players of the OB-X, though many of the sounds on this video could be straight out of Rush's 'Signals' album (check out 'Subdivisions' for a good example). I'm pretty sure Geddy Lee used it extensively on this album and most probably on the 'Moving Pictures' album also. Fantastic sounds you're getting from it Marco, so full and rich!
I'll never forget the day I sold my OB-X (pro road case and all) for $600 and watched it drive away sticking out the back of a Chevette hatchback. Sadder and sadder as the years go by... :(
Thank you so much for this, a real pleasure to listen to. If I may add a couple more obsercure references, hear many shades of the Rock & Rule and Robotech soundtracks as well.
Herzlichen Glückwunsch auch von mir zum 200. Video.
That section you called 'Depeche Mode' actually reminded me of the kind of 'never ending' Sega Megadrive RPG video game that I happily spent many hours wasting my life away playing back in the early 90's when I should have been studying at college. I'm only now discovering the sounds of synths on RUclips, where have I been all this time???? Amazing sounds and great musical ideas, thank you.
OK, so I was looking at the OB 8 because that is more of my price range and also availability but will I be able to get some of these similar sounds with the OB8? Thanks
@retrosound72 Is there any other synth that comes close? I trust your recommendation. I have a dsi poly evolver and it's great but looking for something strictly based on analog like of this quality and purity...thanx in advance...peace
I guess it depends on whether your a collector or just trying to use it to make music, plus the beauty of soft synths is they will never break. The arturia SEM V is only 99$ to download, and the direct emulation of the OB-X would be the OP-X from sonicprojects and they have many diff versions to suit your budget starting at 50$. And the sound is very genuine as well.
@Booger6995 A pad is typically a sound with a slow attack. It get its name from the fact that it would be used to "pad" a mix and fatten up existing sounds. These days, a lot of "pad" presets on synths wouldn't be very appropriate to use as padding. Listen carefully the chorus in She Is Suffering by Manic Street Preachers for an example of a pad sound on the choruses.
A thing I love about the Oberheim SEM is that when you cranck the resonance of the filter, it doesn't take the bass out, like in most analog synths. The OB X is based around the SEM voice components.
getting the software version from Arturia is much cheaper now. Still, Tom is actually re-releasing the original SEM hardware module and the Two Voice Pro on his website. tomoberheim com p.s. OMG @ 4:43
well, my problem with software is that you pay up to 500$ for what has no worth anymore after you have bought it. A physical synth can be sold in case you get problems or something. p.s. absolutely ;)
No midi? how do you record with an amazing synth like this? I want one soooooo baaaaaaad... I am stoked for you to own this synth...are they hard to find? This is my dream synth!_!
Wow, what a gorgeous sounding instrument. A lot of it is very Boards of Canada-esque, but maybe that's partly to do with your progressions too. Is it going through a Space Echo or something?
A "pad" pads out the sound between bass & leads - this would be my dream pad machine but I think I would lose myself for months playing this beauty. I've started saving so at £45 a week (stopped smoking and putting the cash I would have spent into a glass jar on my desk LOL) it will take an age and hope I can catch the ever increasing prices on these wondrous machined...

Nothing like a synth pad to calm an anxious soul.
Don't have a word for this piece of art. One and only OB-X. The sound is so huge and alive!
The '60s, '70s and '80s were the golden years of synths and organs! :)
In my opinion one of the best analog polysynth ever, up with the Yamaha CS-80 and the Jupiter-8
Don't forget the Akai Timbre Wolf.
Those are among the "Gas-giants" or synths.
just insane!! that sound..omg
These Oberheim boards are unparalleled. They definitely helped to shape the sounds of the 80's. Everybody used them.
The Oberheim OB-X and Matrix 12 are my absolute fave synths.

Fantastic demo and wonderful sounding OB-X, Marko! 5*****
The Oberheim is indeed a dream synth !
btw :Congratulations with your 200 th demo : )
I hear Rush - Afterimage at 7:22...man I'm getting inspired here!

yes the Flash Gordon soundtrack, what a sound! here a bit FG feeling: Oberheim OB-X Analog Synthesizer "Memories" ;)
congrats for the 200th video.. these sounds are completely amazing.
The pads and strings are sooo beautiful. Definitely in the same league as the Prophet-5.
Fantastic sound!
STILL my favorite synth after all these years. Thanks for the great video.
The sound of this synth is unbelievable. I think Japan used this one quite a bit and they had some 'unique' sounds shall we say.
Happy 200!
Thank you very much for all your extensive "vintage" treasures sound demos.
Wonderful sounds! Thank you for 200 of those videos!!! :)
Wow... how beautiful the wooden case of that synth! :o And look at those heat sinks at the rear part!
:)
Great demo. The Brass sounds of the Oberheim series, in particular, were always very remarkable. I find the sound of the synth very 'Jarre-esc'.
Absolutely, that's why the great Miles Davis used one ;-)
no doubt this is one the best sounding 8 voice even going about long before the jp8 brings a big smile on my face thanks marko u play it great know the sounds well :)
Looks like you need a double-X stand for that monster. ;) Cool demo of an übercool synth! That Oberheim brass is just.. just WOW!
@retrosound72 Ok ...I will do some research and check availability... thank your for your time and all that you do...
You could do an entire movie soundtrack for an early 80's sci-fi film with this thing!
I like the Sonic Projects OP-X. It doesn't sound exactly like an OB-X or OB-8, but it's close and with EQ it's almost impossible to tell the difference. Tape saturation helps too, Variety of Sound ThrillseekerVBL is the best I've found.
OB-X for the win!!! it's the early 80's Tangerine Dream sound;)
thanks for the clip and the presentation

now, that is an awesome synthesizer !!!!!!!
Dude, I LOVE THE BLUE HOUSE SLIPPERS. Total Stage persona! You da man!
Wow great sound!
:)
Thank you so much for this, a real pleasure to listen to. If I may add a couple more obsercure references, hear many shades of the Rock & Rule and Robotech soundtracks as well.
thank you for watching!
fanTASTIC 200th episode....
blew me away
amazing. Just amazing.
gorgeous sounds there.
tell me...where the hell do you keep all your synths ?
agreed! yes Japan used the OB-X a lot together with the Prophet-5.
Wow!! What a beast! Great to hear it in isolation. Love your videos welk done! :0(
It's just beautiful
Herzlichen Glückwunsch auch von mir zum 200. Video.

Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@rhydermike THANKS. Always wondered where the name had originated. Now we know.
Awesome demo as always!, by RS.
Glad you liked it!

thank you for watching :)
It's because it's very close to one of their songs, Agent Orange
Good device. What massive radiators on the back panel. It is necessary to install in it the midi interface, it is a usual procedure in our community))
The Oberheim Pad sound really reminds me of the music of Minecraft, Especially when your Exploring the Nether, Simply Beautiful :)
:)
Super Sound

Thanks for show
this is fucking massive.
yes the synth and the sound. ;)
OK, so I was looking at the OB 8 because that is more of my price range and also availability but will I be able to get some of these similar sounds with the OB8? Thanks
The 6:30-7:00 segment is reeaallly nice. thanks.

I hope that with the release of the new Oberheim OB-6, Two voice SEM, eurorack SEM Plus etc, vintage OBs see their second hand prices lowered.
+Javi GI think not. sound and concept are very different.
Pure adrenaline!
thank you!
wow, that big heatsinks can hurt you.
J Cesarsound yes it`s hot ;)
which part of my soul do i have to sell to get one of these
@retrosound72 Can you explain why they call a pad, a pad? Never could figure that one out.
The brass sounds remind me of Tangerine Dream's soundtrack to Wavelength.
:)
i like that brass sound at 4:42
I think this track really gets at what the X does better then anything.
my god I have a juno 60 and ind i thoght it was fat. Now I know what is fat
;)

My fave OB; nothing else sounds like those fat filters

Which depeche mode song is that you play?
No midi? how do you record with an amazing synth like this? I want one soooooo baaaaaaad... I am stoked for you to own this synth...are they hard to find? This is my dream synth!_!

+infindebula I also hear Crystal Castles. But it's the most BOC synth I've ever heard. Awesome.
Van Halen.....times flies.....Thanks!!!
Were these velocity sensitive?
so silkyyyy....one day will have one
What synths in your opinion can compete best with this Oberheim obx?
The Oberheim FVS
how does the expander compare to this?
Man there's one for sale right now on eBay
They want a pretty penny
But you just can't touch the OB-X
It's worth it's weight in gold...
FLASH GORDON 1980 SOUNDTRACK
The Swell... Never better!
A "pad" pads out the sound between bass & leads - this would be my dream pad machine but I think I would lose myself for months playing this beauty.
Trotzdem super video :)
do you think its possible to make these sounds digitally on a computer? :(
No way
but what synth can substitute these kind of old school devices? reaktor perhaps ?
200 times compliments!!!! :-) Max
it has a very dark sound
tell me if my deutsch is correct - Retrosound gefellt mir :)
1:22 Vangelis "Beaubourg"-Sound ... ich lach mich schlapp ...

Sounds like Zelda Majora's Mask OST for the spooky sounds.
✨🙌
Enormissoum
Sounds very John Carpenter's soundtracks.
