Thanks again for the wonderful words Hyce! 14:41 isn't quite correct - in the simulation code, I'm changing the wheel size, but not the piston size or piston stroke. I suppose that's true! If you're just scaling the wheels, you're just scaling the ratio. You've got some quantum squishy-piston madness going on there, but seriously, so cool. Thanks again for making the mod!
@@Hyce777 no worries! It's been fun to work on. Ideally I would change the animation to make the stroke look right, but I'm bad at animations so it would take me a long time to get right. Plus there are other neat things I'm working on for this mod...
I just wanted to say that your mod as really saved the late game content for me. Before I really couldn't justify using any of the steam engines because so often I found myself needing to MU several engines to pull the loads I needed to break even. I haven't played with the Duplexes yet but I love the pulling power the 4-12-2 Union Pacific arrangement has in game.
If you have 82 inch drivers , they would turn 246 revolutions per mile, so per minute that would be 60 mph so 61.5 rpm would be 15 mph. So 615 rpm = 150 mph. Once you have the revolutions per mile of ANY wheel you can determine the speed at any rpm because the revolutions per mile = the revolutions per minute @ 60 miles per hour or 1 mile per minute.
I did that the last time i rode amtrack. I counted the thumps of a flat spot to see how fast the freight was going before the tobago showed up. It was 34mph 😁
You may find the halfway-open setting on steamers' sand handle is sometimes enough to keep it from slipping. The advantage becomes that you don't drain the whole dome as quick
Just gonna say this now, Hyce. As fun and hilarious as it is when you accidentally blow up a steamer in your ES&D career save, I suggest you dump the fire any and every time your water glass runs empty. Don't even risk it, just dump the fire completely, _then_ open the injector after the firebox cools a good bit. Best way to avoid an explosion, at least in game. Plus, it hasn't worked for me every time, so there's still a chance for shenanigans!

Wow, definitely going to have to try this one. If I had any niggle it'd be that you can't choose a smaller wheel diameter for some of the smaller arrangements. At least with how I play, I need pulling power more than speed, so having a low-slung 4-4-0 or 4-6-0 would be more beneficial than a high-drivered passenger model.
I was screaming and laughing the whole time the handbrake was left on the locomotive and cars, I'm just so used to playing with Driver UI that was the first thing I noticed.

So it would have been a 2-6-2+6-2 (with the "+6-2" bit being the stuff under the tender, essentially a Triplex but with only 4 cylinders). Sadly it was never actually made.
I’m curious, what drive wheel setup is the most efficient in steam trains, like the best power to weight ratios, or size to traction ratio whichever is the correct way of putting it

Hey, I'm the moron who made this mod. Not in the current version unfortunately, right now the leading and trailing wheels just decrease the adhesive weight (in Derail Valley, adhesive weight is calculated as loco weight times number of powered axles divided by total number of axles). I like this idea though and might implement it in a later version. Ideally leading wheels would make it harder to derail when going forward, and trailing wheels would make it harder to derail when going backward (which is I think how they work in real life). But that's really tricky to code. So I might just increase the derail threshold with the number of unpowered axles. IDK when I'll get around to this though.
