I have a few Kindles that are >10 years old, and I haven't received any emails. They still work well because the core functionality of the Kindle doesn't require much processing power. Other than improved resolution, the main "enhancements" to the device are mostly marketing related - ads, book suggestions, Goodreads integration, pointless thumbnails of book covers etc. Amazon wants people to upgrade so they can (a) sell them another device, and (b) push more marketing features onto their users.

I have 5 Kindles over 10 years old. I don't remember any email from Amazon on free or low cost upgrades. Singh needs to post some of these emails on his YT channel. He forgets to mention that AMZ does allow you to download AZW or MOBI files for many purchased Kindle books. You can sideload the files into the old device (e.g., K2) using the USB connection.

My wife bought me a PW3 in 2018 and I loved using it everyday. When my friend was looking for an e-reader I sold her that one for $20.00 and again my wife bought me a refurbished PW4 last summer. Again I was totally happy with it. When new kindle 2021 came out I wasn’t going to upgrade but after hearing how awesome the bigger screen size and warm light was I decided to wait for a sale.
With your video on how to turn a Kindle Kids version into a normal Kindle I bought a new kids version on a one day sale from Amazon for $100.00. I gave my PW4 to my daughter.
My friend still uses the PW3 daily and my daughter the PW4 when she does read. My PW5 works like a champ and now…Now I am happy once again because the screen size and warm color were the two missing features that I know now make all the difference. I won’t be upgrading anytime soon. This model has more than I need to read books.

I actually just got my 1st kindle about 6 months ago and since picked up two discontinued models as backup. so
How did I last this long? I absolutely love reading on my iPad mini.but now that I've tried the kindle I see the benefits. I still read certain books on IPad mini because they are larger encyclopedia type books or have color photographs.t
And not having to charge something every few days is a wonderful benefit.e
By the time mine age out if I just have to find a different way to download new books I'll be happy.

I've had my second-generation Kindle since it was issued (however many years ago that was) but stopped reading books on it shortly after I purchased an iPhone, which was a year or so after buying the Kindle. The iPhone/iPad had/has more storage and allows me to read and listen to audible books simultaneously (which is my preferred reading method). I really appreciate your content because it put my mind to rest, as Amazon was somewhat cryptic about the announcement and its reasoning. I have well over 4000 Mobi format books and was concerned (no, panicked) that this was the first step to my library becoming obsolete. Thanks again, I really appreciate the channel and your approach to delivering content.

I recently sold my 4th Gen Kindle which I had for 11 years and "upgraded" to the Basic White (no ads)
Love it. But, tbh, I don't ever remember buying books from the Kindle itself.
I always use the online store on the P.C. or email converted PDFs to the device, so much easier.
I notice that Amazon have dropped the price of the Basic White in the UK from £79-£54.
But, that just might be a Bank Holiday (we have 2 for the Queen's Jubilee) special.
I also read online that there was a (very) recent update, but I've so far, not received it.

Enjoying your channel, and I, too, received the Amazon email indicating no more shopping on my Kindle Keyboard 3. Not a big deal, as I only purchase books with my PC. I was given the Kindle Keyboard USED in 2011 by a dear friend who upgraded to the newest Kindle. The K3 is a workhorse and I will continue to use it but will also probably upgrade to Kindle Paperwhite 5 or Signature and take advantage of the 30% off option. The K3 was the last Kindle to offer onboard audio with speakers and a headphone jack. Unfortunately, most newly purchased audiobooks (Audible) will no longer download to this device, so I use it now primarily for ebooks. Only have a few audiobooks, so, again, no big deal.

I was right! They're just discontinuing Kindle Store access on all non-touchscreen models.
I do have a Kindle 3 that isn't connected to my account, and when browsing the US Kindle Store on it, I can understand why they would discontinue access. I'm tempted to log in just so I can capture screenshots (for my own research and future blog posts) of how the Australian store looks on non-touchscreen devices, but when logged out, I can browse the US store. Once they discontinue access, they can (likely) remove the support files for non-touchscreen models, while keeping the files for touchscreen models and Fire models.

I purchased my first Kindle paperwhite last year June 2021. I loved it. When Amazon announced they were releasing the Kindle Paperwhite SE I immediately traded my Kindle for the latest version. I love it. I look forward to reading whenever I can. Before the Kindle ereader I didn't read much let alone a novel. However, With my Kindle I found an author I enjoy. I,m in the middle of my second novel by Mark Sullivan.

I'm still using my non-touchscreen kindle 4 (2011) and Paperwhite 1 (2012) and they still work really well.
I side load all my books so not having a store is no problem at all.
Newer models are better but the text on older models is at least as readable as a newspaper, it is completely fine to go through a book.
Kindle 4 is very light and has physical page turn buttons(!) so it is worth keeping around. I also changed the battery once.
If anyone baulks at the price of a new model, look at the older used models, still a lot of life left in them and can be found for very cheap.

I got the email a few weeks ago. I still have a 3rd gen Kindle that I have used since 2010 or so. It it amazing how well it still works! I recently was gifted an older paper white (which is great because I have never had a Kindle that was backlit), but I will probably pick up a new Kindle with the discount. I am a little torn between the new PaperWhite and Oasis though. I still miss the buttons and I am trying to decide if Oasis is worth the price increase for the form factor.

The Voyage replaced that on 4th November 2014. The Paperwhite 5 came in on 17th October 2017. The Oasis 1, replaced that on 2nd December 2017. The Oasis 3 arrived for me on 23rd October 2019. I have been using a Kindle since April of this year. I finally decided to try one after I was trying to read an ebook in the car on a tablet and the glare was too much and it kept reflecting light around the care. Bought a used Kindle Gent and liked the e-ink screen so much I bought a new Paperwhite 5 for the backlight and bigger screen to also read comics on it. Love it and have been able to read the amount of books I did back when I was in school. Being able to take my Kindle anywhere is great.

That was my take too. I have a Kindle 2 with keyboard, which still works quite well and battery life will still let me read a couple of books before recharging. I saw the email and wasn’t too worried because I don’t think I’ve ever bought direct through Kindle (or now my Kobo). I’ll use my laptop, order something, and then download on the Kindle, just as you said.
I didn’t see the part about 30% for an upgrade though. I just checked my email now and there was a link to a FAQ that listed the offers. In Canada, it is $50 for books, and same 30% discount.
I’m tempted, not because I need another eReader but because it would make a nice gift for someone (Eg. my mom who keeps trying to read books outside on her iPad which is difficult with the sun shining…yeah, gonna get her a proper eReader). Thanks for mentioning that Maneetpaul…I’d overlooked that offer.

The batteries can be replaced to extend the life even more. Older kindles can actually be maintained with replacement parts. All you need is a cross head driver and something to pop the cover on the back off. Batteries can cost as low as $10. These kindles may never fully stop working.

    • @MrDeadhead1952

@@nikobuerk346 I am aware that the batteries are replaceable, but to be realistic the majority of kindle owners are not going to be replacing them as most are not that tech savvy and the process of actually replacing them is not straight forward with delicate ribbon cables to be dealt with.

Hello there! I enjoy your videos so much! Now that the MOBI and AZW3 formats are being abandoned, the best way we have to send books to kindle is with Epub. However, using the "Send-to-kindle" options means that we no longer see the covers as thumbnails. Now, this is a bit of a nitpick, but is there any way moving forward to use the "Send-to-kindle" option (so I can sync with my phone app) and keep the covers on the thumbnail? Thanks in advance!

Can people "side load" books to their kindle. I still have the Kindle Voyage. It does not have the warm light but it does have a 300 dpi resolution. I have a Boox Nova 2 with a 7.8-inch screen and the high resolution. The Voyage is much lighter and is my "go-to" device for reading. The finger press page turns buttons on the Voyage allowing one-handed use is important. I tried the newest paperwhite but as above my preference is for page turn buttons. I predict that Amazon will release a new version of the Oasis soon.

But the point you're missing is some people prefer the page button feature, and in my opinion the higher PPI count hardly makes a difference when you're thoroughly immersed in your book. The text is just as readable on a 167 PPI as it is on a 300 PPI. It's all just salesman exaggerated hype.

Sorry, I should have pointed out in my previous point I respectfully disagree, as I wouldn't want to come across as being abrupt, but when comparing the 167 PPI to the 300 PPI Kindle, even though I noticed the 300 is sharper, it didn't hardly make a difference to the reading experience i.e. the 167 PPI is still just as readable and very comfortable to read.@@Maneetpaul
