Reviewing the 2007 first-generation Kindle 16 years later!

  • The Kindle changed the world of e-books forever when it launched in 2007. At $399, it was priced like a category-defining product because it was, with an array of features that has never been matched since. Sure, modern Kindles are lighter, look better and have glowy lights, but this monster had a full keyboard, SD card slot, a scroll wheel, and free 3G. At least until they turned it off.
    So let's rewind, do a battery swap (you could do that too!), and look at this revolutionary 2007 gizmo from a modern perspective.

    That thing looks like it came out in 1987 not 2007.

    Another great show. Not only fun to revisit the first Kindle, but great to realize the many tech advances in just the last 15 years. Good job.

    Funny how every generation they take away features from devices and make them more throwaway. Replaceable battery, headphone jack, memory card, speakers, who needs that stuff?

    Super low reflectivity screen and replaceble battery is what i want to see on modern e-readers.Also phisical buttons is a nice touch.

      I am in need of a replacement battery. Seems my Kindle has died and I think it’s the battery. Where do I find one ? I have first generation.

      A Kobo Libra 2 is the closest you'll get to something like that now.

    Cool video I love watching videos about old tech. Super surprised that it costed $399 back in 2007. 😮

    Amazing how far we’ve come and crazy to think how far we will go in another 15 years.

  •  7 месяцев назад +1

    Kindles are around for so long that I really thought they existed in the late 90´s. I am curious about the keyboard... what would you use it for? Take notes? Thanks for the video. Oh, and it´s amazing that you could load a new book and read it! How were ebooks sold back then? You had to download them and send through USB?

    • @LeeClontz
      @LeeClontz  6 месяцев назад

      There's been a Kindle Store on the Kindle pretty much since the beginning, but USB worked fine on this unit since the wireless format isn't supported any longer.

    This would probably be a lot of work and take a lot of time but, I think it would be fun to work on these. Maybe add a diffuser screen with led for a front light. I also wonder if there is a way to convert it to 4g so you could deregister the device. What do you think?

    • @LeeClontz
      @LeeClontz  Год назад +3

      It definitely feels more hackable than any of the new ones. That said, the screen resolution and refresh rate is… pretty bad. It’s fun to play with because the interface is so peculiar and novel but you wouldn’t want to daily drive this thing in 2023.

      i think there's a chance you could hack it to use usb for networking and maybe, maybe even connect to amazon's services through that? I'm not sure how much you'd have to modify it or whether amazon's servers would work with it though, since the Kindle isn't designed to use the actual Internet and the other isn't gonna expect that model of Kindle at all, especially through a path not involving whispernet/the cell network

      Some really weird design decisions, but it’s so technologically audacious that it’s a fun device to revisit.

    Heyy i have this one kindle, just bought it from a secondhand store online, but the big issue is this kindle unfortunately is a managed device, and the wifi is off, i know that this kindle have no support from amazon anymore for it 3g, but i thought the wifi must be can be use, but as i said it is already managed to not to connect to wifi from the previous owner. And i also cant factory reset it, after i ask the issue with Amazon CS it said bcs this kindle already old so the wifi can't be use. But i think, its not bcs of it, its just already managed by the previous owner maybe for their child. And it just dead so they sold it. I really want to make it become can connect to wifi. Sadly i cant do the factory reset

    Nice video. My only nit to pick is that the program you'd mentioned several times is pronounced caliber. The creator just spells it like a Commonwealth nation would. Libre may be an ideal, but it is not part of the naming.
