I still have my kindle keyboard & I’d use it when I was offshore on oil rigs and the 3G was amazing. Ten years later and it’s still going strong! Fell off top bunk, been moved, dropped and forgotten about for a couple years & she still works! Best Christmas present I ever got myself 😂

I get so nostalgic for this model. I was gifted one as a teenager. I was in the hospital a lot, and this lot me through a lot of lonely days and nights. I read a lot. It also really cemented my love for the eBook format, and I've been primarily buying and reading eBooks since then. I also used that Kindle for like 7 years. I thought of replacing the battery for it, but what changed my mind was the higher pixel density and contrast on newer readers. Nowadays I use kobos.

I have 4 kindle keyboards. Bought 3 additional ones from Woot for $12 when they were available in 2018. Can't give up my clicky keys. An additional benefit is that this kindle will work in much colder temperatures than a touch screen. You can even wear gloves, which you can't with a touch screen. TTS works with sideloaded books, not restricted to just Amazon purchases.

This was great. I inherited my dad's Kindle Keyboard when he died a few years ago. As you say, it's built like a tank and I do like the physical page turn buttons. Plus the screen resolution is perfectly acceptable. But I decided last fall to buy the latest Paperwhite, thinking that surely, after 10 years of advances, it would provide a much better experience. Sadly, it really doesn't. The touch interface it slow and erratic, and the speed is really not much better either. Even the screen seems to have hardly improved despite the backlight and higher PPI. And frankly, the Kindle app is still miles better than the interface on the physical Kindle devices. I think that e-Ink still has to get about 5 times faster before I'll really like any Kindle device.

Hmmm, odd. I do know that most devices if they lose ALL battery (like, not just dead....but dead for a long time) will not charge again. It takes a little bit of charge for a device to accept a charge (which is why they recommend storing devices at 50%). Not sure if that's what happened for your first device or not.

I have the oasis as I’m disabled & the weighted side means i can hold it much more easily than other kindles, my arm doesn’t tire as much, plus the orange light really helped me read as my eyes were getting red & sore with the blue light, although the Paperwhite has that feature now. Here in Mexico people still have some Kindle Keyboards but, because as Latin Americans we have this tendency to use everything until it breaks or stops working, there aren't a lot of these devices on Marketplace unless they're quite expensive (some people collect them).
Take good care of your Kindle Keyboard, it seems super practical and as someone who is not very into touch screens (unless i have to clean them frequently), I would have loved if Amazon kept on improving and keeping the features of this model.
At the moment I have the Basic 10th gen, it's nice, very useful but, just like I wrote before, I clean it very frequently with a dry cloth to remove any fingerprints. I guess that's just me being obsessed with cleaning 😅.

I completely agree! I've been using a Kindle Keyboard since they first came out. I've gone through 4 of them over time, mostly 2nd generation. I usually buy them off ebay or wherever and I always make sure I have an extra one tucked away in the closet ready to go if the one I'm using stops working. (They cost so little the security of having a backup is not a big investment.) I finally got a Paperwhite a few days ago from Woot for under $30 to take traveling with me. (So I wouldn't have to worry about taking my external reading light.) I am NOT a fan. Having to move your thumb to touch the screen when you want to change the page is a real distraction. On the keyboard version, with its perfectly placed buttons, you never have to move your thumb over or even break your reading stride. You just gently press down from where you're naturally holding the device, even one handed, and, viola, new page. Perfection. And I can't tell you how often the Paperwhite does things like not changing the screen fast enough or going multiple pages forward. Maybe this is a function of it being refurbished and maybe I'll get used to it over time. But, overall, not impressed.

Watched this again after 2 years. Still true today! You're $8 purchase was indeed a steal. They seem to go for at least double that on Ebay, and most of those are "non functioning" and meant to be used as parts. I still have my dad's Kindle Keyboard and as you explained, in many ways, it's superior to the current Kindle iteration. Rumor has it that the next model Kindle will include physical page turn buttons! [ PS - if you're an avid reader, $300 really isn't that much to pay for a device you'll be using many hours a day. Provided it doesn't drive you bonkers that is, like my Kindle Paperwhite does to me! ]

I really love mine, my mom got it in 2010. The real issue is that there is some sort of battery problem. When I first started using it again a month ago after years of not reading, if it wasn't plugged in at all it would instantly freeze. After using it for a month or so while plugged in it is able to stay functional for a couple hours. The first problem I end up having is that it won't sleep when I flick the power button, and the green light won't show when I flick either. The kindle still works otherwise. If it autosleeps I have to reset the kindle, and if it isn't plugged in while loading it will freeze.
If I keep reading after these symptoms begin to show, there is a risk of the kindle freezing before I can save my progress in the book. I am able to save progress by hitting the home button, but all of this just makes for a bit of an annoying experience. I can't really read unless I plug in when it comes down to it. I am uncertain if a new battery will even really fix these issues, and am uncertain whether a new battery or a new entry level kindle would be better. Otherwise I love this thing. Its thin and I love the page buttons, and being somebody who loves and uses old tech (like my computer I built in 2014 or my iphone 6s plus from 2015) I really want to hang on to my kindle keyboard but this issue is really bothering me and I can't find much info about it.

I have the older 12 year old Kindle (Kindle 3) and also the newer Paperwhite. Interestingly, at least in daylight, the display on the older Kindle is superior to the newer one. At night it doesn't have the backlight, but I also have the older cover (which is still in good shape) and has the pop out light. Having the side buttons to turn pages is also superior to the touch screen, especially if you happen to be reading while you are eating for example, so you don't get the screen all dirty. It is also incredibly robust - and in fact has outlasted a number of my newer Kindles. So I suspect it is actually better made. In many ways, it is the "Lenovo Thinkpad" of Kindles (before they went down the chiclet path). The newer ones are lighter, so depending on how you like to read, i.e. if you like to lie on your back and hold the kindle with one hand, the newer ones are probably more ergonomic.

I do, however, want a "basic bitch" cheapie e-reader that'll read all the epubs that I have on my phone. I don't need all the fancy options. I don't need high refresh rates. I just need to be able to load up the file and turn the page.

The thing to add to this is the kindle store is no longer supported on them. That's not an issue for me as it works fine otherwise and i order the books on my phone anyway, but something to be aware if anyone is thinking of getting one. They work perfectly well otherwise though, and swapping the battery out is really easy so id even say buying one with a dead battery for next to nothing and changing the battery would be a good buy.

Got one for 12 bucks in marketplace. Updated it, and it runs rly well. I added an external reading light with clip on because it doesnt have a backlight

I purchased my Kindle Keyboard G3 back in 2012 and having installed the 'Bible Study Suite' have used it virtually every single day for the past ten years and it has never let me down. I like being able to grab it without worrying about touching the screen and accidentally booking a holiday in North Korea or having to continuously hold it by the edges when reading, I just grab it and I'm on my way.

One in black pebbled leather and one in dark tan pebbled leather. Very bright lights on both. Will cost you a bit when you find a seller with a working one though. Although plenty sell them as "broken or for parts" but this usually means they are untested since they don't have a kindle to try it out on. Sadly this is a gamble. I was originally intending to get an e-reader from a thrift store because, well, I'm cheap. And I don't really need one. The new features seem nice, but half the reason I want a reader is so that I can use a dim yellow lamp to read by, not some backlight look like a phone. On RUclips I only find reviews for newer models. Besides you. Looks like there might be benefits to these old ones, too. In Canada, it seems Kobo is more common these days than kindle. I'd like to load PDF's and Epub into it if possible. I have old vacuum tube data sheets and such that would be nice to view on an e-ink display. I'll keep an eye out. Maybe even an old Sony would do..
