- How to manually update the software on your old Kindle Keyboard 3G!
I had trouble with this so I wanted to share how I solved it. Not sure if many people even still have a Kindle that old. More life related videos to come. Figured I might as well document my journey. Hopefully some people will find my experiences useful or entertaining. haha

Finally someone who knows what he is talking about. It was impossible to find the instructions, but you had it.
Clear and it works. I went from 3.3 to 3.4 with USB connection on Windows. Shows how useless Amazon is - can't even realize they should have these instructions easily available.

Thank you so much! I decided to buy another Kindle Keyboard. I gave my last one away. Later I bought a paperwhite and didn't like it as much. So I found a used but never used kindle keyboard online and bought it. I thought I had wasted my money. Same problem you were having! I took it to the library and their IT guy talked to his coworkers and made another appointment and nobody knew what to do. So, I sent this to that IT guy and will now make another appointment! (I no longer have a computer.) You're awesome!!

still have mine (yellow light)...have a Fire, and will soon be receiving an Oasis. Soon my books can again be carried in my purse again. I could not find any original kindle USB cords, generic ones did not work except to charge, but computers would not detect. Finally some xbox micro USB cords I had did work! Thank you, great content!

Thanks for posting this. A year later I just changed out the battery for a friend who loves their old Kindle Keyboard, but has not been able to use it because of dead battery and lack of the most current updates. Trying this tonight to see if I can get it working for them. They are older person who gets intimidated by the newest technology, so trying to get this going as I think they can still download library books from the local system onto their Kindle if I can get it going for them.
Thank you! I updated a kindle keyboard 2nd generation in 2024 :) I have to move the file once and re started but it didn't work. I delete it and move the file again and this time I got an "Update your kindle" and now is working.

oh my gosh - thank you! the Kindle I've dug out / inherited needs ALL THE UPDATES. I thought I could get it to do it's thing over lunch but the Amazon website is so unhelpful, so thank you for taking the time to do the research, have a live chat with Amazon and sharing the info.

Thank you so much for walking me through this! I heard starting in Aug, access to the store will no longer be supported for 3g, but we can still use via wifi for 3rd gen (keyboard)?
So helpful! Amazon needs to figure out how to support their products better.
Technically they still support them, it's a blessing they didn't make these old tablets obsolete. Y'know, like a certain fruit company we all know.

The state of my Kindle (and the age) is the same as yours. I've followed the steps but the option to update the software is greyed out. Amazon support has been less than helpful. Any suggestions?

I just got off with Amazon chat and they are telling me they have no software/firmware update for my kindle 3. Same start serial number as yours. If you have the web address for that fix, could you blast is out so I can get my Kindle 3 up and running.

Hello thanks for the help, I have followed the process, my kindle shows 3.4.3 in latest version but the update kindle is still whited out and cant be used. Why is that and how can I fix it? I also can register my kindle account and the password and email is correct. please help.
Same issue here. I can't update to the 3.4.4 version. I can install it but dissapears when I try to update this final version. All the others worked perfect, went from 3.4 to 3.4.3

My computer won't recognize my kindle. When I plug it in it doesn't show the usb screen it only shows that it is charging. I have restarted my kindle a bunch of times, factory reset it at least three times, tried a different usb cable, and I have left it overnight to make sure it is fully charged and still nothing. Please help me.

I think I did the update a few years back. Took me a while to figure it out too. Have to say the Kindle keyboard still works fine as an eBook. But the browser feature is pretty much dead now. Can't check emails or anything anymore. Also foreign fonts support is missing so now there are Chinese ebooks that I've brought on Amazon and won't even download to my Kindle.

Heyy i have this one kindle, just bought it from a secondhand store online, but the big issue is this kindle unfortunately is a managed device, and the wifi is off, i know that this kindle have no support from amazon anymore for it 3g, but i thought the wifi must be can be use, but as i said it is already managed to not to connect to wifi from the previous owner. And i also cant factory reset it, after i ask the issue with Amazon CS it said bcs this kindle already old so the wifi can't be use. But i think, its not bcs of it, its just already managed by the previous owner maybe for their child. And it just dead so they sold it. I really want to make it become can connect to wifi. Sadly i cant do the factory reset

this model of kindle is genuinely timeless. It was perfectly fit to purpose when it was made, with a laundry list of nice side features. Everything we got since have been distractions. Only nice addition would have been a usb type A port to plug reading lights into (fuck backlights)
Hi, I still have the problem where I go to download the kindle update but it says the file can not be supported, no matter what number of update it is, can you help?
I can only speak for my experience, but when I would download the file and try to open it, it would always say "file not supported". However, I found out that you're actually not supposed to open it, but simply transfer the file onto your Kindle when it's connected to your computer. Once you transfer the file, safely disconnect the Kindle, go to the Kindle settings, click Update Kindle, wait for it to update, then restart it. I had to do that for every single update.
@@ryankanno2562 did you need to register the kindle after every single update or just keep updand restarting until you get to the end?

I still have two of these machines. One is stuck on empty battery, the other says critical battery but after a bit of charging has turned on. When I plug it into my PC it does not recognize it. It'll charge it but doesn't pop up. I've tried multiple cords, different USB ports and two different PCs. Does anyone know what I can do? I've tried googling for the drivers, but only find sketch websites that I'm hesitant to download from.
Never mind. I found another cord and it worked. Apparently the two original kindle cords are no good. But the update was not successful unfortunately.

I think I screwed up. I had already figured out the drag and drop, and was following the instrux on Amazon but I think I skipped one of the updates. I had an older version (I don't remember exactly which one now) so I updated to the next step it called for, but I got distracted and I think I skipped over an intermediate update. Now I have the 3.4.3 installed but still cannot connect to the wifi and can't seem to go backward to a previous version either to try to correct my mistake. I did a hard reboot (hold power for 40 seconds as another comment suggested). I also did a factory reset wrongly assuming it would put me back to the old software but now I'm worse off than before because now it has erased all the info and I have to re-register it. Not going to bother with that until/unless I can get it hooked up to the wifi again. Gah!!! If anyone else has this issue (possibly skipped a step in the update process) please let me know if you found a resolution!
