I *LOVE* getting both the Audible and Kindle version. Sometimes I listen to Audible and follow along on my Kindle. Having someone else read to you while you follow along is so calming....
I am a very very slow reader, and my patience to sit through more than 10 pages a day is impossible. This is the strategy I use, that works - helps me read about 30 pages at a time easily + I absorb all the content w/ its nuances. Quite simple, I sit with the book I wanna read, with its audiobook on Audible plugged in my ears. I read through the book at the same pace as the audiobook plays along. Anytime I slack off, the audiobook brings me right on track. The audiobook - 1) guides my pace of reading the book, 2) helps me absorb the information through two sources - visual (by reading the book) + audio (by listening to the audiobook), and 3) keeps me on track from getting bored and straying away. Go head, give it a try, and lemme know if you have any strategies of your own for an impatient and slow reader like me :)
I love it when he says that books existed from the prehistoric era. The reason i love it is that (if i remember correctly) the prehistoric era is defined as the era before writing.
I just can't get satisfaction of reading a book until I actually hold the physical paper book in my hands and smell the scent of newly bought book. Maybe, I am too old school 😅. But at least for me, paper books can never be replaced by Kindle
One use case for the iPad that you missed is for text-books. I find that PDF books with diagrams do not render well on the Kindle whereas on the iPad they are great. Thanks for the informative video.
Guys smthg very funny happened to me yesterday. I commented on a video on a french tv show channel and got around 280 likes which is great so I decided to edit the comment and promote my latest video and they deleted my comment XD
One other thing the iPad has over the Kindle is when reading graphic heavy books - text books, graphic novels, comics, all DK books, instructional books, etc. And one other plus for the Kindle, for those of us who share a bed with a partner, it's so nice to not have to blind them with a bedroom light when you want to read and they want to sleep.
I just found the Audible subscription a year ago and it has no lie changed my life. I have listened to so many books that I wouldn't have otherwise found or been able to afford. It is absolutely, hands down my favorite subscription and that is coming from an avid gamer who uses Game Pass.
me: having bought a Kindle, using it for a year and then thinking that my reading will become more consistent if I buy an Ipad. Well, now I use Ipad for Netflix and RUclips and almost never read
I probably have 5 Kindle’s but my go to is my iPad mini as a reader now. The highlight, markup, scribble on the page feature is the best. It’s also great to lookup words and have a browser handy for deep dives into whatever. You’ll be charging the iPad every few hours but who cares, totally worth it!!!! Currently reading Pale Fire which requires a lot of notes, field work, and bouncing around….here is where the kindle fail miserably .
I used to love reading physical books but once I bought my first kindle years ago I couldn't go back. The Kindle is the number one reading device, it's just so convenient. I can easily carry 2-3 books I am reading at the time and quickly read while waiting for an appointment or my public transportation. Also being able to read while in bed and not lose my location if I fall asleep is great. I also have the iPad but it's just not convenient the battery runs out or the brightness just puts a lot of stress on my eyes. Although I still go back to physical books when reading or studying something technical.
Very nice video, Ali: You would have noticed more people now prefer reading books on phones, tablets/iPad and laptops for many reasons, which includes (1) Tablet/iPad can carry between 1-200, 000 books on memory cards, (2) all books now have audio functionality, with natural voices - you can listen, pause and highlight important details, (3) can adjust brightness to your preference. If you have a tablet/iPad with up too 600 nits, you will enjoy reading books even under direct sunlight, and (4) when you have many physical books, you begin to have challenges with managing them, and moving with them around (5) and for students and people doing serious research, it is easy to Index, Search and Extract facts and key points from e-books than physical books
I know, I am very late here but, I feel creating new habits plays an important role. I was adamant not to use kindle because I love physical books. But, once I started reading books on it, I was wowed. The same happened with audiobooks, I started with my tried and tested book, listening to HP by Stephen fry. And now I love audiobooks when I am working and kindle otherwise. 😇😇
I loved carrying my Kindle and reading on the bus while commuting to college and that was a fear of mine. I was always afraid sb would take it from me. Hated the feeling, but carrying one more book with all my college stuff was horrible as well.
One thing not mentioned is that readwise allows you to scan in your notes from your physical books which then can go into Roam or Notion. I still prefer my Ipad but I like that I can still use physical books to sync to my notetaking system. It does take time to scan the pages, but you can still make it work. Love the video Ali!
What I like about physical books is that yourr completely disconnected from technology. We spend so much time on our devices that removing physical books and using a tablet/kindle instead is just a big no for me.
For lovers of classic literature: remember that many books that are out of copyright (more than about a hundred years old) can be downloaded to your ipad or Kindle for free from services like Project Gutenberg. You have a choice of download formats including KIndle.
For someone that never enjoyed writing into precious paper books, ebooks allow me total freedom to jot thoughts down and highlight, no guilty feelings about ruining them. And it’s too easy to go back to any part, instead of enduring the frustration of searching for a specific line buried in hundreds of pages. So while paper may give the experience of something tangible, digital offers an unmatched power over content. In a larger context, that ends up producing a richer experience for me.
I have a bookshelf full of actual books. I’ve been thinking about getting a kindle because my shelves are getting full. This summary has convinced me to get a kindle. Thanks for making a great video!
It's a completely different feeling when you get to physically hold a book. Personally, nothing beats the experience of reading an actual book. But for productivity, audiobooks are best time savers :) Great video as always Ali !
Actually I prefer kindle to paperback, I can choose font size which I can't do with paperback. It's easier to hold. And I don't forget page in which I stopped. And the screen is so close to the paper
I LOVE reading bookson my iPad mini and use Kindle. The books Are cheap, you can translate, mark, don’t need to carry them. I love iPad mini because the shape is light and easy to hold while reading!🙏🏽 The iPad mini is perfect to have with you. Love your videos!❤️
With ebooks it's harder to tell just how far into the book u are and how much u have left, those are big motivators for me, but I have 100% switched to ebooks for convenience.
Kindle has features of telling what (physical book) page you are on. It can also tell you how much longer in time you have left to read in the book/chapter, etc.

The Audiobook adds to the aesthetics the good narration and special effects. For example, the plays of Oscar Wilde from the BBC in Audible have the music, the special effects, the witty voices, etc. Wuthering Heights, just the audiobook, no special effects, adds so much to the intensity with good narrators. Thanks for your videos !
I think the smaller iPad is much better in terms of ease of use and comfortability when reading. I will also go as far as saying it’s similar to the kindle because it’s much smaller and can easily fit in you bag. I usually use the dark mode as it makes it feel more like a real book, and the note taking on it is amazing
@@Tttt28882 It makes the screen matte which reduces glare, but it is still not close to an e-ink display in terms of ease on the eyes/similarity to paper.
There's just something about the physical books that feels so good. I feel so much better and the information seems to stick better after reading from physical paper weather it's a fiction book or my med school books. It can never be the same as reading on a device
I love all methods and it would be hard to choose...but if I HAD to...I would choose an iPad. When I'm taking notes, I use a split screen with Notion on one side and Kindle on the other and take notes right on the spot or copy/paste quotes into Notion, etc. I also use the slide over feature for a couple of other references I might need. It's a set up that has positively changed my life and productivity. 🥰
If you already own a copy of a PDF you can email it to your kindle and even convert it to use kindle's format so you can use fonts. All Settings>Your account>Send-to-kindle-email. Email the PDF to that Email address and if you want it converted make the email subject "convert"

I really love the ordinary analogue book. The feel and sound of paper is special! 😊 The more I've searched for study techniques and thought of travelling, the more I see a use for the electronic books. I don't want to take notes in a physical book, in an e-reader/tablet it's totally ok! 😄 With an e-reader I can take several books with me when travelling!
A ton of public libraries (at least in the states) have Kindle books available as well, you can find them on your phone and wirelessly send them to your device when you check it out. And it automatically returns itself!
For really book lovers the electronic book can never compare to the real thing: the touch, the smell, the whole ritual and magical experience.... everything. Of course, the ebook is a great invention because you can easily carry it everywhere but is a total different experience.
Life is really hard for us now, in 2021, because we have too many ways to read.’ -Ali Abdaal 2021 Yeah, I definitely can’t think of any other reason why life is difficult in 2021
I recently bought a kindle paperwhite (amazon discounts). It’s amazing when reading books in bed at night. Before i got a kindle, iPad air often burned my eyes when reading. And it’s too big too. I think i sleep better these days 😁
I missed two topics in your video. One is the blue light topic, where of course reading a paperbook is the healthiest way for your eyes, then PC, phone, iPad scrrens are the worst. For example I also had to switch my 28" desk screen to eye-saver mode because after 8 - 11 hours working and doing private stuff, I felt some kind of little pain in one of my eyes. Second topic for me at least worth to mention, is that buying Kindle books, means actually buying only the license to access the books, you don't own them. So far I know you can for example not just export them / save them as a pdf or other kind of file. Maybe even third aspect, some people like also physical books because they look nice and they enjoy having a library on the wall but of course having many books it also leads to space problems, what is a disadvantage. But at least if you want get rid of the physical books you can sell or gift / donate them.
I used to love hardback physical books. For some reason, they become better 'friends' then the kindles. But since my work as a doctor requires a lot of traveling, the portability factor of kindles are unmatched. Medical books and pdfs, however, are best read on iPads. Great video, Ali and Eid Mubarak!! :D
I love Kindle books for college text books. It's easier to highlight, created flashcards and sync to Readwise and Notion. But a regular physical book is nice when you just want to read. Holding the physical book to read in my comfy chair and drink a glass of wine is such a nice feeling.
@@bmoreka That's unfortunate. Perhaps your college has restrictions on how their curriculum textbooks are sold to students. My non-profit college always recommends the best ways to save on textbooks and provides links to other site apart from our college bookstore. Maybe reevaluate the college you're attending and their motivates for why they don't utilize textbooks sold on Amazon Kindle?. 🤷♀️
Physical books are the best! Audiobooks is my second option. I always bring a physical book with me. And on my phone an app or on RUclips are also audiobooks when you finish your book as alternative. It is also nice to listen to audiobooks when doing house jobs. Much love. xx
I love my Kindle as well as Boox Nova 2. I also have an audible subscription. Just a note in that if I am walking or riding a bike I only have one ear for listening to an audible book as I need to be aware of my surroundings to prevent being hit by a car.
After trying tons of audiobooks and ebook, I still find fidelity, longevity and power of photo recall of information with books far superior. Would love to see a test on that!
Another very good experience which is similar to reading via Kindle is reading in a reMarkable device. The main difference with Kindle is that with reMarkable you can upload PDFs thus reading and taking notes on nearly everything (articles, magazines, books).
kindle has helped me a lot in building my vocab. English is my second language and being able to quickly search for the meaning of words I don't understand is very convenient.
I love the smell of books - both of new and old ones. Also, I never toss a book. It just feels wrong to me, but that's just me. I take very good care of my physical books even while carrying them in my bags. Digital books are definitely much easier to carry around and easily accessible if I find some free time on my hand to read them.
Recently I’ve found reading on my iPad more enjoyable, but there are certain books I will always read in paper or hardback. I would probably get a kindle one day as well 😁. For some reason I’ve never got into audiobooks but I do love listening to many podcasts so maybe I will get into audiobooks eventually
I use the Samsung Tab S7 all the time. Reasons- 1) I usually download polished epubs, and convert them into mobi that suits tablet use case using Calibre. This makes up for NO COST. Although, I do pay for cheaper books. But I most readily academic books for free using calibre which are otherwise very expensive. 2) COLORED HIGHLIGHTS.- This is a feature u missed in the video and it actually kills! I color code my highlights. For example- yellow for raw facts or absolutely crushing insights which I got to remember, pink for negative attributes of something, blue for positive, and brown for anything which lends to better understanding or a usable anecdote. 3) Screen- I think an amoled screen does the job pretty well for reading in night with the least brightness setting. Unfortunately, the Tab S7 pro is way too big (just like your iPad pro) for my taste, so I use the tab s7 which is good as well. 4) Search and convenience- The best thing about reading a book on the Kindle app on a tablet is that if you don't know about something or some place, your tab has all features to get you to that understanding. I achieve this by having Google Earth and Wikipedia integration so if there's anything I don't know, a tap takes me there! When it comes to audiobooks, I think they are great for fiction (which I almost never read), and self helf (Which I do). But for non fiction, it really doesn't work. Sometimes, I play a non fiction audiobook while reading the same on kindle. It helps in better memorization and involvement while reading.
Fun comparison! I have to say that I find the iPad or a physical book really helps when you want to flip through the book and find a specific page / section for reference. Or for example when you are reading a novel and want to check back like: what was the connection again of that character last chapter. To just flip back and see what you missed. (I especially do that with thrillers as I'm like. Woah woah! What did I miss? Plot twists) those are terrible on ereaders. 😅 And I love that I can just screenshot and send it to a friend when I have a nice paragraph if you're on phone/ipad.
Ive been buying books, and my books collection begin to pile up. So i decided to sell it away to make room to buy more books. Then I realise i doesnt like to deal with buyers who eagerly wanting to bargain a price of second hand books. Thats when i realize maybe i should get kindle instead. Thank u for the video Ali😎
@@KarimAdib I am for the most part (it depends on the book). But in truth I speed read normal books so I consume them pretty quickly regardless of method. I don't really share Ali's issue with taking notes on audiobooks, but I guess it's each to their own.

Audible to listen while driving or doing chores around the house. Kindle via iPad for textbooks in split view. Kindle unlimited for stuff I don't care to own. Physical books primarily for non-fiction that I keep on my bookshelf in my office.
Wow! Just some advice. Get a Remarkable and you will love it. I'm loving mine and until I tried it I was doubtful. However, it will amaze you and yes it feels like writing with a pencil in a notebook. Plus, it sinks to your computers
I think the notetaking rating about books should be higher. The main thing i love about physical books is that i can just flip through my favourite pages/notes. I cant do that with a kindle or an audiobook
The quote "you're probably not buying an iPad to read books, that's a weird use case for an iPad…" reminds me of the first version of the iPad. I specifically bought it so I could use it to read the several hundred PDFs e-books that I'd collected, but wasn't reading on my computer!
i was scold because i sit on a book few years back. when i getting older, i realize author spend years and put a lot of effort complete a book. so please respect the books as we respect the author.

Literally I was looking for this comment
I came here to say this, but I knew in my heart it had already been said.
😂
Exactly my thought!
I just can't get satisfaction of reading a book until I actually hold the physical paper book in my hands and smell the scent of newly bought book. Maybe, I am too old school 😅. But at least for me, paper books can never be replaced by Kindle
I don't read almost any, but i fully understand what you say, i don't think it's old school at all!
@@kyf_ I am proud to be old school. So even if it is, I am happy 😂

One use case for the iPad that you missed is for text-books. I find that PDF books with diagrams do not render well on the Kindle whereas on the iPad they are great.
Thanks for the informative video.

Left out my favorite format, reading ebooks on my 40” TV connected to my computer. I can take notes with my wireless keyboard in my lap. Love it!
How the hell is that convenient lmao

this is the reason I choose Kindle over Android/Apple tablet, I know that I would distracted easily by other apps haha :')
I am considering a kindle for that exact reason. I use my iPad for reading but it is really easy to get distracted
The part where he started throwing books beat my heart.
I love the smell of a physical book. For me, that adds to the wonderful experience of reading.

I totally agree with you
I like to read physical books when I'm on the street because my city is very dangerous. No thief robs books.
🤣🤣 you make a good point.
I loved carrying my Kindle and reading on the bus while commuting to college and that was a fear of mine. I was always afraid sb would take it from me. Hated the feeling, but carrying one more book with all my college stuff was horrible as well.
That is where audio books come in. BTW my phone was snatched as I came home from work a few days ago. The fear isn't misplaced
Valid point.
I’ve started reading so much more this year. I love audiobooks for commuting and doing chores. Getting a kindle has been game changing though 😊
Not sure about kindle but kobo has this feature. It tells you how far you are and how many pages is each chapter
Kindle has features of telling what (physical book) page you are on. It can also tell you how much longer in time you have left to read in the book/chapter, etc.

The Audiobook adds to the aesthetics the good narration and special effects.
Problem with the Ipad, no matter the size, is that the screen is not easy on the eyes.
@@synen does the paper feel type of screen protector help??
the word you are looking for is comfort, not comfortability
@@Tttt28882 It makes the screen matte which reduces glare, but it is still not close to an e-ink display in terms of ease on the eyes/similarity to paper.
My favourite method is reading and listening the book simultaneously :D
I so agree with the Kindle. I've only got mine for less than a year but I feel like I've read more books than I've ever read in my life.
For me, it feels **great** to read on kindle, far more than a physical book. It is better in every single way imo.

Life is really hard for us now, in 2021, because we have too many ways to read.’ -Ali Abdaal 2021
Yeah, I definitely can’t think of any other reason why life is difficult in 2021
I recently bought a kindle paperwhite (amazon discounts).
I am from Russia and I use audible! It’s huge! And it’s no problem access to library everywhere of the world
I usually end up reading ebooks because I cannot wait for physical books a lot of times :)
I have found zero of my textbooks on kindle

Physical books are the best! Audiobooks is my second option. I always bring a physical book with me. And on my phone an app or on RUclips are also audiobooks when you finish your book as alternative. It is also nice to listen to audiobooks when doing house jobs. Much love. xx
I love my Kindle as well as Boox Nova 2. I also have an audible subscription. Just a note in that if I am walking or riding a bike I only have one ear for listening to an audible book as I need to be aware of my surroundings to prevent being hit by a car.
You could also use an online library as well. Like overdrive or libby, which send books to your kindle, or you can read them in your browser
After trying tons of audiobooks and ebook, I still find fidelity, longevity and power of photo recall of information with books far superior. Would love to see a test on that!
There actually has been some research that suggests that recall is superior with physical books.
The kindle has been a game changer since you can change the font to dyslexic friendly font. Completely changed my reading experience
For some reason I’ve never got into audiobooks but I do love listening to many podcasts so maybe I will get into audiobooks eventually
plz recommend some audiobook?
I have a good listening skills so I consume most of my books through audiobooks at 2x to 2.5x speed. They're God sent🙏
The best way to read is what you feel best. Ali Abdaal cannot tell you that
I use the Samsung Tab S7 all the time.
Reasons-
1) I usually download polished epubs, and convert them into mobi that suits tablet use case using Calibre.
Bro if you made this video a week ago, I could’ve used the information for the essay I had to make on this exact topic.
Better late than never!
Pretty sure he made it back then
Fun comparison!

Physical books are worth reading if there are illustrations/pictures in them such as the illustrated Da Vinci Code book. Also nothing can compare to the tactile feel and scent of paper.
Audible to listen while driving or doing chores around the house. Kindle via iPad for textbooks in split view. Kindle unlimited for stuff I don't care to own. Physical books primarily for non-fiction that I keep on my bookshelf in my office.

I’m 100% audiobooks. It’s working really well over the last 2 years. Either through audible or the local library. 30+ so far this year
The quote "you're probably not buying an iPad to read books, that's a weird use case for an iPad…" reminds me of the first version of the iPad. I specifically bought it so I could use it to read the several hundred PDFs e-books that I'd collected, but wasn't reading on my computer!
