Finally a tutorial on masking that doesn't assume I already know what masking means, and actually uses an example that is realistic to what a beginner would do

This "paint the shape you want, then invert the mask" technique is brilliant. Thanks for sharing

I've been looking for sculpting mask brush tutorials for a couple of days and found some good tutorials, but not quite what I needed. Then, Ryan appeared and, as always, it was EXACTLY what I was looking for. You're a godsend, man! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

wow, i wish i knew about both the mask tool, and the dynotopo setting, earlier, would have been super useful...... defiantly going to be using this in the future.

I was following a different tutorial that required me to use the mask tool to add some inscriptions to an axehead. Couldn't get it to work. Figured I should step back a bit and look at the mask tool itself so I'd at least know what it was I couldn't do.
So while I still can't get it to work, I at least understand the problem better now. Thanks!

This video is an excellent demonstration of how much you can get done with just the masking tool, and I highly recommend combining it with the info from Blender Secrets "Hard Surface Sculpting Tips" Part 1 and 2. Thanks Ryan!

tysfm! Ive been wondering this for sometime, and seen tutorials were there is heads being scultped, and always seen that dark mask, and realized thats exactly what it was , a "mask"! Also, the dyno topo thing thats what ive been trying to figure out as well, but did njot know how people turned it on. never seen it done, it was like people had it turned on as blender loaded up.

This at least makes me a little less overwhelmed, thank you. Trying to resculpt an old Gamecube model to use as a 3D Print. I wanted to sculpt some of the details that were originally made through texturing, but I've been struggling like crazy just to get the sculpt tools to do what I want lol
Half barely do anything, and tools like Clay, that are supposed to "add on" in fact cave the model inwards. Masking should hopefully help a lot, the only issue is I can't really see what I've masked lol

If they’re doing the opposite of what they’re supposed to do, go into edit mode and alt+N and flip normals. That should solve that, or alt+N and either recalculate inside/outside. One of those usually solves the issue for me.

When I use the Mask tool to paint, nothing shows up. The Mask Overlay is turned on.
It's the same with Subdivision Surface applied or not.
    ...
Upgraded from 3.2.1 to 3.6.2 and that fixed it. Bug in the system.

hey it's me again 😅I'm desperate about something small again and am searching like crazy on Google. I thought there was a function to make the masked area invisible so that i can see inside the body. Or am I stupid and that's not possible with the mask, and another mode/funktion? 🙈 Thanks. And great Tutorial as Always 👌

Rotate tool is on the menu of brushes near the pose brush on the left and there’s the rotate button near the bottom too.
