    This technique is amazing, I wasnt overly happy with how my runes came out using the clay strips tool. Shame I didnt save an archive of my axe head just before starting the run sculpting but I guess I'll just have to make another sculpted axe after this to try it out!

    This is exactly what I'm looking for on my current project! And you mentioning Face sets, I may have a solution from what I know. Especially considering you can smooth the edges of face sets, you can go to Options on the Mesh Filter and enable Auto Masking: Face Sets. Then in the remesh settings, enable Preserve: Face Sets. That will make it so the Face Sets are a mask, and remeshing it doesn't clear the face sets you have. I just joined you discord yesterday, and am excited to participate in your next challenge! Keep up the great content! AND THANK YOU!!!

    • @devonashby4924
      @devonashby4924 3 года назад

      Just tested that out, and doesn't quite work since it's everything else but the face sets you want masked. But in testing, I did notice you can also 'Preserve' the mask in the remeshing options. So that looks like the better way to still go. For the indent cuts, you could also alternatively turn the face sets into meshes and then cut into the mesh with the Boolean tool. Thank you again good sir for this tutorial!

    Thanks for this, Grant! I used to think these kinds of designs were mostly achieved using the knife tool. I hope we can get to see you do this again but using an existing image file for the mask (as a stencil perhaps; I'm not sure if this is possible). I would love to draw my rune designs on 2D and "kitbash them it in". Great and concise content as always. 😊

      I tried this technique by creating a new mash brush with a strictly black and white image, same as creating a new draw brush with a texture. As I recall, didn’t go to well though so it was a little disappointing. You can draw in pictures obviously by creating a new texture brush etc. but the results are not as fine as drawing with the mask tool as Grant has done here.

    Awesome technique but set mask falloff to smoother, sharpen the mask, and then you will have super smooth mask for object. Just in case if you are making something emissive then extract the mask after inflate, set it as surface not as mesh.

    btw In the Remesh popup menu, there are checkboxes for preserving Paint Mask and Face Sets.
    Also in the Option popup menu on the right side of the Remesh popup menu, you have checkboxes to get global settings for different Auto-Masking, as Face Sets! to use with most sculpt tool, including the Mesh Filter!

      @@Hitsujioyaji Interesting even so. This is not the same thing, but I started thinking. What if one would render or take a screenshot of the area one would want to sculpt details on. Then make vector shapes over that image and save as SVG. Then open the SVG in PureRef and overlay it over Blender so the sizes of zoom and image placement match. Then mask over the details? I don't even know if it would work or if it would be worth the work. I think this subject is very interesting!

    • @Ziflinz
      @Ziflinz 3 года назад +1

      This works fine with the Mask brush. You just need to assign it a texture and set the stroke to "Drag Dot", Strength: 1.0, and Falloff: Constant. You can then invert the mask and use Mesh Filter + Inflate (or just the Move tool) to extrude it. You will have to get the brush radius to match. So since there's no way to save off a mask in Blender, this is probably the best way. Just copy a screenshot into PhotoShop/etc. as a base layer and draw on a new layer there. Then bring it in as an alpha... Hopefully Blender will add "layers" one day soon so that it's not a giant pain to go back and fix/update things.

    Nice looking axe, but doesn't look practical because if the blade was stuck in a tree or something, the chopper part could get pulled out of the wooden handle because it of its shape. The only resistance would be some rope and the wood, which gets more and more space between it and the blade in time. So, it looks cool, but a discount store like Marcs has hatchets for under $5 and they would all last for basically infinity.

    Hello everyone,
    maybe somebody has some time to help me with this peculiar problem concerning masks:
    My computer could so far handle everything that Grant did in his videos, even the small voxel sizes, which makes me believe it might not be a performance issue:
    My mask and the mask-drawing just does not behave the same as Grants mask does in this video. Mine is very slow and stuttery and even though I am using the same brush radius and strength and all the same brush settings it is not nearly as fine-grained as Grants mask brush. I cannot really draw on my mask because it kinda lags a lot (I do have a drawing tablet and the scultping so far has worked out fine).
    As I said I dont really think it is a performance problem because my computer so far could handle everything in this tutorial, I am probably missing some weird setting that makes it bug out for me.
    My mask just seems to behave weirdly all together...
    *One update on this*:
    On any other mesh my mask works perfectly fine (so it is indeed not a performance issue!) it really is just the mesh of my axe blade on which the mask somehow does not work. Does anybody have any idea what could be the problem with a mesh so that the mask would not work properly on it?

      I ran into this. In case anybody else is having this issue, if you still have the mirror modifier (or any other unapplied modifiers) active on the mesh then it will impact performance. Just apply the modifier and performance should improve.
