A small tip for those watching this and having issues with mirror modifier. When you add the bSurfaces object, make sure you go back to object mode - press Ctrl + A, and apply all transforms. This will apply current transformations and set the bSurfaces object's position, scale, and rotation to default values 0, 1, 0 respectively. I had this issue today. I added the mirror modifiers, but it was not mirroring on my model.
As someone who's recently learned and completed a full body retopology of one of my characters, this tutorial is one I wish I had earlier. The tips you shared using your cards was especially helpful, and I used them to clean up certain trouble areas of my character's mesh. Ty Aram 👍👍
Thank you thank you thank you! I can’t thank you enough. This tutorial helped me actually ENJOY doing topology! I’m so happy and excited that I can make my models cleaner now and not feel so overwhelmed. Seriously thank you so much! If possible, would you be able to make a video about the rest of the body? Having those starting loops really helped me so I was wondering if you could make a similar video but for the body. Or even just an image showing those important starting loops.
Been watcNice tutorialng your vids for a good few weeks now, learning new sNice tutorialt each day. my worksoftow has improved so much since watcNice tutorialng
I already said in the announcement of this video that i was curious about your approach on retopology. I am happy to finally got to watch it. Not a second wasted. A lot of interesting information brought in a clear way. Thank you so much.
Great tutorial! The "cards" were an excellent way to explanation those topology manipulations. I had known about most but a couple were new to me, so this was awesome to learn. Also instead of the sculpt smooth tool, the slide relax sometimes works better for "smoothing" geometry as it doesn't affect the total volume of the mesh
LOL i just found out after i had retopo the entire face that i had the "In Front" checkbox Off. That's why it was such a hard work. Thanks for a well made tutorial im new to blender [Maya veteran] this was very helpful 💛
thank you so muh for this tutorial, i am a beginner and undesrtanding to make loops around by using quads is what i needed, once again thank you so much ❤❤
Oh, my word. This is such a FANTASTIC tutorial. Especially the bit with the cards. I'd love to have a little print out of that to remember those cuts. I've played around with retopology but I haven't finished a full character. It seems so complicated. Which means I just need to practice. This was inspiring and useful.
Just want to say thank you. I just finished retopoing my first head ever from watching your tutorial and I feel like another portion of my brain has just been unlocked. lol Also wanted to say thank you for all your sculpting tutorials. I learned how to sculpt from watching your vids! Thank you so so much! You are an awesome teacher! 🙏🙏🙏
Amazing!, It is a wonderful tutorial, you explain everything we need to create retopology in a simple and practical way, with this knowledge we lose the fear to do this process that is important for 3d models. There is a function in Blender "Grid fill" that adds the quads needed to fill the mesh, so the process is faster. (but to fill from loop to loop they must have the same number of vertices) you can find it inside the Edit mode -> the top menu "Face". Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Great tutorial, thank you first tutorial that made sense to me! (have not seen the other materials on your channel yet, stumbled in here just randomly) :D
if you want to smooth the mesh faster, select all border edge loops, invert selection and smooth everything at once. duplicate shrinkwrap modifier, apply it, re-smooth as much as needed. most important is to reapply the shrinkwrap everytime to nail the vertices at their smoothed location on the surface of the sculpt, or they will float anywhere in no time.
I've seen a lot of retopo tutorials but never gotten a handle on how many edges to add in each essential loop which is why I'm always unsure of how to do so myself. I try but when the time comes to merge the loops together into one mesh it's always mismatched and the model looks ugly. Is there a secret set of numbers that you could tell me about the number of faces per loop (eg. how many faces should be in the eye loop, mouth loop, the loop around the ear)? Knowing how many faces per loop I should have will help me in making a complete mesh.
it usually depends on the character! try to make the retopology as low-poly as possible! there are a few parts like around the eyes which should have more details so they can have more amount of faces compared to the other parts! but pls don't confuse yourself with the number! just watch this video and learn where to start and how to plan retopology! then you're always good to go👍
The only thing you should keep in mind for the loops is that you need equal amount of face for each upper and lower part of the loops. You need an even number of faces (no odd).
This is awesome! One thing I've been struggling to find is a tutorial on how to retopologize trees. Like pine trees with individual needles and millions of polys.
Amazing tutorial Question, do you happen to have a full course or somewhere to get more from you? (paid would be great) cause I really like your way of teaching and level of detail / information you provide.
BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, IF I KNEW ABOUT THESE CARDS I WOULD HAVE NOT MADE SO MANY FCKING LOOP CUTS. I thank you Ms Aram
Hey, of all the retopology videos I've been watching, this one really helped me because of your guidelines/essential lines on the face. Would you be able to do one for the body?
Great tutorial ! You didn't show how to sculpt and retopo the inside mouth to open it, cant find any tutorial on this subject. It would be so helpful! Thank you
If you’re planning on animating the mouth I think splitting all the squares around the mouth into triangles would be better. I think the area around the lips would deform better when the lips move right?
I wonder why you havent mentioned the slide relax tool in sculpting? when holding down shift and using that tool, it does a much better job of "smoothing" the edges, than the smooth tool!
guys, I made a new channel for my Tech videos. I'd love to have you there😍 check it out:👇

Isn't retopoflow all you need?
Hey what do you do after retopologising the whole body ?? Is the new mesh already connected?
A small tip for those watching this and having issues with mirror modifier. When you add the bSurfaces object, make sure you go back to object mode - press Ctrl + A, and apply all transforms. This will apply current transformations and set the bSurfaces object's position, scale, and rotation to default values 0, 1, 0 respectively. I had this issue today. I added the mirror modifiers, but it was not mirroring on my model.
How do you find out such solutions dude i need to know😢
I also set the Mirror Object to the model you're toping over and it's fixed like that.
@@Xterminator8411 That is my normal go-to for most situations!
Thanks a lot for this
The cards demonstration was incredibly helpful and you're the first person I've watched explain this very well, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!😊👍🌸
Yeah most of them weren't deformation friendly though, so put them where nothing is deforming.
As someone who's recently learned and completed a full body retopology of one of my characters, this tutorial is one I wish I had earlier. The tips you shared using your cards was especially helpful, and I used them to clean up certain trouble areas of my character's mesh. Ty Aram 👍👍
you're welcome! Glad I could help! 😊🌸🌿
this might be the single most useful video I have ever seen on retopology. this is some amazing advice. thank you so much
The section where you show various ways of terminating ngons into quad loops is great!
Not only are these tips useful, but this video is actually quite relaxing! I love the background music.
She was nice all through the tutorial and explained almost every step in details. Thanks ❤
Glad you liked it!!😊🌸🌿
This is one of the best retopo tutorials i ever seen. Thanks for sharing your techniques
Thank you thank you thank you! I can’t thank you enough. This tutorial helped me actually ENJOY doing topology! I’m so happy and excited that I can make my models cleaner now and not feel so overwhelmed. Seriously thank you so much!

Ikr!!! She wasn't lying when she said it'll feel like a puzzle.
I was mad about retology for a while... I just watched half of this tutorial and I'm relaxed by now. Thank you!
Best retopo tutorial I've ever watched for free!!! Using free add-ons no less. Thank you!
Thanks. It was enjoyable. I really liked the moments of music and flow that was between the lessons. It allowed me to digest and was relaxing.
A ton of amazing tips in this tutorial. I love the example with the cards and how to get quads.
oh thanks! glad they were helpful!😊🌿🌸
that card exercise was so good! I have watched so many videos about modeling and topology and no one broke it down that way!
Not only is this a great lesson on topology, you also sound like BMO! its very cute to listen too (: makes it easy to learn
Both of your videos on retopology have helped me a ton
Ive been watching alot of retopology videos, this by far the best and simply explained.
Greatest retopology tutorial just from the beginning alone tbh
SO glad i saved this video!! thank you so much :) - a beginner

You're an artist
Great video!Thanks for sharing!
One day I won't have to come back and rewatch this everytime I start retopologizing a new character!
But today is not that day.
Thank you so much for this video! Very well explained! I feel like this is the most helpful one on Retopology I've watched so far :)
TNice tutorials one is really good, among all other basics videos

This is master quality Aram, thank you so much!
Super helpful! Thank you!!
🌸😊
Thank u! This video really helps me :)
Aram, your video was awesome. Is there a chance that you'd show image of essential loops for full body model?
I've seen a lot of retopo tutorials but never gotten a handle on how many edges to add in each essential loop which is why I'm always unsure of how to do so myself. I try but when the time comes to merge the loops together into one mesh it's always mismatched and the model looks ugly.

After finishing the retopology, which modifers do I need to apply first? Thanks!!!
This is so helpful, thank you very much! ☺
Thank you. I just made my first custom face topology map because of this.
I like a lot how you explained everything, this is the best retopology tutorial I've seen. Will put it on practice, thanks!

Really good video ! Thank you
Great tutorial ! You didn't show how to sculpt and retopo the inside mouth to open it, cant find any tutorial on this subject. It would be so helpful! Thank you

Super Usefull thanks!
thank you so much , it worked :)
Your such a pro. I'm really impressed. hope I can learn your technieques.
Thanks for you content!
Your video is very help full for me thanks🙂
This program truly is a nightmarre.
If you’re planning on animating the mouth I think splitting all the squares around the mouth into triangles would be better. I think the area around the lips would deform better when the lips move right?
No, you'd get strange, sharp deformations.
very nice!💕
thanks!🌸😊
I wonder why you havent mentioned the slide relax tool in sculpting?
when holding down shift and using that tool, it does a much better job of "smoothing" the edges, than the smooth tool!
