This video is the reason I have started sculpting digitally, no experience, no previous ability but the goal, through hard work is to have an end finish like yours!
I modeled a face that just happened to have a quarter view of his face, it was a character from Fire Emblem. The character was middle aged and therefore had wrinkles so I thought it was good opportunity to practice with the Clay Buildup brush. I was surprised at how good it was coming out. This video confirms that choosing a quarter view face was better than using a frontal view. Thank you!
I used to be quite good at sculpting, but I haven't done it much for the last couple of years. This made me want to dust off those old skills and finish a couple of models I left half-finished. :)
i literally have that photo saved in my reference pins, i just saved it today before seeing this video in my recommended. what a crazy coincidence that i had been intending to do the same thing this video does, with the same photo! lol
Great work dude! Just a kind advice - as a professional traditional artist with a lot of experience in anatomy, i suggest you take a few lessons in anatomy as well. People who want to sculpt need to realise understanding and practising anatomy in tradional way/drawing,painting/ is the best and fastest way to improve your sculpts.Especially the basics. The rest is technical knowledge. Cheers!
Thanks for the input! You should try digital sculpting, your comment suggests this is more about digital vs traditional rather than anatomy. The medium is just a medium, you can learn anatomy through many means, I don't think traditional is always faster than digital (I've studied anatomy, both through digital sculpting and traditional drawing/ books, I don't think one is superior to the other). Can't compare with traditional sculpting though, personally I don't have much experience there. Also the rest isn't just technical knowledge, there are other fundamentals that matter as well, form, shape language, etc. Anatomy is one piece of the puzzle! That said makes me want to do another anatomy full study soon, been a while i need to brush things up. Cheers !
@@yansculpts hey buddy,i am not saying which is better, i am trying to say that both compliment and help each other. like a symbiose... if you have great drawing skills and you are familiar with the anatomy it will help you tremendously in your digital sculpting. and the same way around.. if you are used to sculpt digitally, you will have better understanding of proportions and perspective in your drawings.
I like your videos with a pinch of education. You explain a lot more information than if I had to figure it out on my own and by the way I really like your sculpting workflow it's so satisfying.
bro you uploaded this at the perfect time because I have not been getting any better at sculpting and it's because I was doing only front facing portraits, giving up in the middle because my block out was garbage, and I just kept using references I didn't find very fun. Thanks for this.
Indeed, she have an amazing look. I like the way you make the hair and that rotate of the face open my eyes, thanks, I'll keep trying to learn ;v/ stay healthy.
I love your videos. They are so well-made and entertaining. We are finally starting to learn to sculpt in uni next month. I can not wait to get my hands on it 😍
Remesh. Do it once you've got all the detail you can out of the resolution you currently have. Try not to increase the resolution too high or too often.
What's the touch screen tablet called? Edit: maybe consider making a guide for some great tools a sculptor could use, i checked your channel but i cant find any mention of the the tools you use. you could also consider putting your equipment into the descriptions of the video for people like me. :)
Hi Yan! Thank you for making me start digital sculpting❤ I’ve been sculpting since I’m a kid and now I’m finally getting into the 3D. I’ve been learning blender for a few months so it’s only natural that I do sculpting in it as well. My frustration is that my niche is realistic organic bodies and Zbrush seems to do it so much better… now that blender sculpting manager has been fired I feel like I need to switch to zbrush since blender sculpting won’t get the attention it needs. Your thoughts on that?🙏🏻🙏🏻
Hey there, I know what you feel like regarding blender vs ZBrush, if you have a tablet with pen I believe they have a free or pretty cheap light version of that too. There is also ZBrush core and the free one ZBrush Core Mini which you can start with. Zbrush right now is pretty expensive so I'd try out the other ones first. I have also heard that 3D coat has some sculpting but I am not familiar with that software.
its for sure not a 1 to 1 copy since there's many differences between the sculpt and the reference but u mentioned at the start thats not always the plan so great work after all
I'm not a big fan of sculpting because I like creating characters I can use in videos and games, but it's still informative to know what I'm looking for in character creation
Great video congratulations. I would like to ask you about your Huion screen, I'm thinking of buying one for myself, but I'm worried about the ergonomics for my back, shoulder mainly, I spend many hours working and I use a common graphics tablet and I don't feel any fatigue, my fear is to invest in the screen and end up not being able to use it because you spend a long time using it and end up having ergonomic problems, to conclude, I would like to know your experience with this type of screen and if a Huion full hd screen is good too, thank you very much for your attention.
Screen tablets are not as good as normal ones in that sense sadly, for me the biggest issue is the neck, it depends on the person. This is why i have it almost upright
Question: Do you spend a ton of time in your material node editor or building hair curves that you edit out in the final video, or do you have a way to have that stuff already set up so you can stay on your tablet without breaking the flow too much?
Hey, please i would like to know of the easily identify the cheek contour line (line running from the cheek to the jaw)of the of any Realistic face, if the image reff is at an angled view like the one on this video.
One question on the reference. Are you using that reference on a separate device/ screen or are you using the reference feature in a way i haven't discovered yet? In either case, how would i set up my reference?
Would this be an easy thing to do for a beginner at blender? I’ve already made plenty of sceneries but I never really made characters and I really want to make one for a school project
Hello! May I ask, are you comfortable with that way of sculpting or do you do it just for the videos? I mean with the position of the screen in that way and also the rest of your body
Im good with the screen, uncomfortable because I have the camera behind me and I have to sit offset, the only bad part (nothing to do with the angle of the screen)
really informative question: you do the paintings in shading mode. is there any way for render mode to paint like this? I hate texture paints and vertex painting! the one that you do in sculpt mode is organic.
I'm currently learning blender with my 6 yr old. Would it be worthwhile to get a stylus pen for him to learn with or something to wait til we level up a bit for?
Given your pose your stuff without a skeleton, at least in the case of this sculpt. Would this sculpt be able to be used for animation with a rig? (Not counting the retopology process)
You can always rig anything, question is how complicated the animation is and what you need to use it for, it might not be ideal depending on the case.
I’ve met her in a workshop few years ago, so surprised to see a familiar face in my learning videos. Excellent work !
Oh no way! Nice, and thanks!

Niiiiice!
Hello! May i ask how you split the mouth to open it at 5:55?
Im having a hard time opening it like that
unless you simply sculpted it inwards?
How do you manage to paint on such a dense mesh without freezing the PC? or is there any retopology process that is not shown in the video?
Bah no secrets, also isn’t that dense, how far can u go?
is that tutorial 3d printing friendly?
I have been enjoying your videos and have been learning a lot! Are your characters usable in video games or are they purely for aesthetics?
You can always retopologize depending on the use
What matcap are you using?
Congratulations on the work
First one in blender
Can't thank you enough,
since when did you practice sculpting ?
Im just curious, before texture painting, was there no need for UV unwrap?
What program/app are you using?

how long did this sculpt take roughly? i know its sped up but it still looks like it only took you a few hours merely
As you said one of her key traits is her upper lipp being bigger than her lower one... 2 seconds after that you made them both about the same size...
to level up faster just get good not that hard!!!!!111
really informative
question: you do the paintings in shading mode. is there any way for render mode to paint like this? I hate texture paints and vertex painting! the one that you do in sculpt mode is organic.
Yeah I rendered her u can see it in the end, just use a color attribute node
