The biggest plus on plastic mags is moisture and freezing. Metal mags love to collecto moisture and especially in winter might freeze shut if your're unlucky
However... some steel mags will have fitment issues with some AK's. Filing will be needed. But known to also be the case with poly mags. Tapco mags for example... I have a buddy who I train with a lot that loves steel mags when I love poly mags. Good video.
I have a US palm one of the newer ones in that won’t fit in anything I have. Galil ace, draco, psa ak. I’ve had better luck with steel and bake lights.
I like the flat side Bulgarian polymers. The Circle 10 polymer magazines are too overpriced. I would like to add a vintage Russian bakelite to my collection, but not at $100 a pop.
have all kinds of mags inlcuding tula plum, steel, circle 10. But have an issue with ur comment on tapco - have a bunch of them and have never had one issue with them. Lot of ppl knock tapco AK mags but they are solid imho. Also they fit just fine in most of my AKs too.. So good fit, not one issue - tapco good to go for me. Last pickup was the new production bulgarian AK47 steel and the polymer with steel reinforeced AK74 - still have to go shoot em - feel good and loaded ammo good. We shall see if they function good.
Steel is the standard AK mag - with an enamel finish rust is a non issue. Even with a blued finish in Vietnam and Central America and Africa and elsewhere rust was a non issue. Steel mags are heavy. And carrying 210 - 300 rounds in loaded mags is like an additional 5 - 10 pounds. All day on a long patrol. For weekend warriors and others not a problem. Polymer mags, the best ones, are bulky - Elite XTAC and reinforced US Palm. Circle 10s are bulky. XTac Fakelites and real Bakelites are nice. Then there are reinforced slab side Bulgarian polymers - for the money probably the go-to mag for reliable use and extended carry. All other AK Mags, Magpul and Tapco and AC Unity, etc. are best left to the range or not bought at all when Korean steel is the same price or cheaper: Korean mags have come a long way. Steel mags are excellent, tanks. Good polymer mags can be had for the same price. If you have to carry, it really is hard to beat Bulgarian Steel Reinforced slab sides or XTac Steel Reinforced Fakelites. Even with a traditional laminate or wood furniture AK from a quality manufacturer like Arsenal, Zastava or if you're fortunate Chinese or Russian the Bulgarian Steel Reinforced slab sides would be a go-to which wouldn't look too awkward or AR-15 poseur.
Steel mags are heavy, they rust, if the get deformed they are usually toast. Did I mention they are heavy and they rust? Poly mags, if they get deformed, they usually bounce right back, worst case you might have to replace the floor plate or follower but the mag body typically remains in tact. They do not rust and are essentially self lubricating. I've seen poly mags run over by trucks and tracks and continue to work. Not so steel mags. Best bet, buy whatever is least expensive and readily to hand, but choose poly first if you have the choice.
They’re great mags! I run em in my GF5, Zastava M70 and WBP JACK! I like the Bulgarian steel mags and yugo mags but the yugos don’t fit in my GF5. My GF5 like Bulgarian, Hungarian and Romanian

My take from the comments. Buy cheap offshore aftermarket junk becuase quality is too expensive 🤣. Sorry but 50 bucks for a circle 10 is not that expensive. Most pistol mags are 30 to 40 bucks and you all buy those all day long.
@@gungnirstrategic those AFTERMARKET bulgarian mags certainly are lol 🤣🤣🤣. Cheap and junky 🤷♂️. When you're paying 50 to 100 for ONE MAGAZINE then you're getting the quality stuff. That weight difference isn’t as noticeable as most claim.
I hate polymer mags, the feed lips deform and the mags don't seat. Steel all the way.
I bought 6 Croatian steel mags new and none of them fed reliably, tabs are welded on too high. Would definitely avoid those.
