    This is the third NAS video I've seen today. I think the universe is trying to tell me something.
    Also, this channel is a gem!

      Or maybe it's finally time to build your own NAS and you are searching for the best option? If you need it - build it, even if it's a tiny box with just two mirrored drives, you will like it.

    I have this board and the only issue i had with it was that the front heatsink was awkward as hell to remount after adding an NVME SSD. The rest of the the board is pretty decent and runs my 3900x just fine. I got it on sale for ~€150 (after conversion from my currency) so I'm pretty happy with it

      @Miyconst  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah.. the front M.2 heatsink mount is kinda a joke but it works.

    can you please explain setup at 4:32? what kind of expansion cards were used apart from PH43-B?

  • @jagildown

    Interesting. I was looking at N100 motherboards like ASRock N100DC-ITX, has 19v jack too and it's supposed to draw around 10-15 watts without the drives. No ECC and limited PCIe lanes unfortunately nothing is perfect 😅

    • @Miyconst
      @Miyconst  5 месяцев назад

      The ASRock board has even less connectivity than Odroid H4+ but costs more, if I remember correctly.

    • @jagildown
      @jagildown 5 месяцев назад

      @@Miyconst Yeah the H4+ is a beast for the space it takes! for tiny builds it's a no brainer.
      Only 2xSATA ports for the Asrock but it has one PCIex4 slot and one M.2 port ( ⚠Both run at x2 mode only) so I think it should be possible to add 2xSATA ports (maybe 4 with the right card?)
      I can find the ASRock N100DC-ITX for ~145e on reichelt, and I the H4+ at 180e (shipped & 20%VAT incl.) but I guess this will depend on region and availability. Since I already have DDR4 RAM the N100 would be cheaper even with expansion card but not that far, honestly both options are really good especially compared to Synology NAS prices 😅

    • @Miyconst
      @Miyconst  5 месяцев назад

      @@jagildown don't forget that H4+ also has an eMMC storage that can be used for system installation while the M.2 X4 slot can be used for an NVMe cache drive or an M.2 to 6 SATA ports adapter.

    So... do you still have that VERY small 4liter itx case? You could build a VERY nice mini ITX system with that B550i

    • @Miyconst
      @Miyconst  5 месяцев назад +2

      I still have that case but it's really limiting so if I would build a system, I would much rather print a MODCASE EVO instead.

    Gigabyte B550i Aorus Pro ITX is really a good ITX motherboard for the AM4, it is the best AM4 ITX from price & performance in my opinion. Better than the ASRock B550 Phantom Gaming-ITX/ax.
    After more than 2 years of almost continuous 24/7 unRAID operation and it continues to run without any problems, I bought another Gigabyte B550i Aorus Pro ITX for a small mini gaming PC in Fractal Design Ridge Black.
    The advantages of the motherboard are that it really supports ECC (which is a disaster for AM5 in ITX) and I can fit a lot of NVMe* as well as SATA SSDs*. There is only one disadvantage (if that is really one) there is no USB-C header on the motherboard.
    Here is my unRAID config;

    What software did you use for your new NAS?

    • @Miyconst
      @Miyconst  5 месяцев назад

      I went with TrueNAS Scale.

  • @jammsen-z8y
    @jammsen-z8y 5 месяцев назад

    Why not? Because AMD on NAS is very high idle power draw, if you want performance and good idle you have not other chance to get Intel. Every NAS forum will tell you the same, my own 5700G NAS draws 70w with everything lowered. AMD is just not a NAS thing for idle power draw.

    • @Miyconst
      @Miyconst  5 месяцев назад +1

      While 70W sounds much for idle power consumption we need to compare apples with apples. What Intel alternative or the same performance / features can offer instead? 5700G as a NAS CPU is a very odd choice if you ask me.

    • @jammsen-z8y
      @jammsen-z8y 5 месяцев назад

      @@Miyconst First of not every NAS is the same, some do only Storage and a Raspberry PI is enough for that, others do Docker and VMs, where you need the right Architecture and a little more UMPF. Im running Unraid and you need a primary GPU for that (non-Headless), meaning you have to have an iGPU when you want to pass your Nvidia or AMD GPU to a VM, in an optimal scenario. Alternative to 5700g would be a 14700T or a 10850k or even some good i5s in the 12-14th gen range. The Unraid Discord and Forum have a lot of recommendations about this, this aligns with the Data-Hoarder Discord, all tell you if you dont need to watch power-prices and need good performance go AMD. If you life like me in Germany and are Top3 of Most Expensive Price/Watt Worldwide, you need to watch the Watt-Meter to not bleed dry on that money in addition to buying the parts in the first place. They always recommend Intel for that reason. Happy to give you sources if you want me too.

    40 w idling is not good.

  • @tehehe5929
    @tehehe5929 4 месяца назад

    You should not take Americans seriously when they talk about power consumption being okay. Their energy prices are so low that they spew nonsense. 70W idle is atrocious. B550i with Ryzen at 40W is really bad too. Intel CPUs are usually better at idle power consumption (assuming similar generation of hardware). Motherboards vary wildly in their power consumption as well (depends on how many additional hardware features they have and how well energy saving features work on these, what's worse no reviewer reports on this) - for some reason MSI boards consistently use less energy than competition. I would consider anything above 20W to be inadequate, ideal would be below 10W with disks spun down. You really need to have PHD in order to choose best hardware and it is really deep rabbit hole to go into. It is way easier to just buy synology or qnap and forget about it all (you won't have to maintain software as well) and spend time on something more productive.

      Speaking of MSI.. did you see this video? ruclips.net/video/XRk7XthEHkI/видео.html
      I do agree about the power consumption but disagree about ready-made NAS solutions.

  • @vollhorst140
    @vollhorst140 5 месяцев назад

    Something is not right with your power consumption. My bb55i / 5600g, 16gb non ecc uses only 18w idle in Linux. Measured without mouse keyboard & screen. I tweaked it a bit in bios but not much.
    Nevertheless a good video and a good review. Thank you.

    • @Miyconst
      @Miyconst  5 месяцев назад

      We have too different setups for a direct power consumption comparison. 5600G is a single die CPU, 5600 is a CCD + IO die, I have twice as much and ECC memory. Still, if you think something is wrong on my side - please share your BIOS settings with me on Discord.
