    Right I'ma save everyone here a day of troubleshooting: If you processor isn't supported out of the box (but is compatible with the latest firmware), you need to update the IPMI first using the "rom.ima_enc" file you get from the .zip file on the support page. Yes, I know the manual says something different. It performs a check first, which fails when the file ain't proper. You can try that using the .bin file the manual wants you to use. Anyway, only after upgrading the IPMI, you can update the UEFI to support your processor. Before that, the IPMI will misidentify basically every component. Don't worry about that, just update the IPMI and it'll be fine. If you only use two sticks of DRAM, from the perspective of the CPU socket: Leave one slot free, populate the next, leave the next one free, populate the outer one. Single stick of RAM: Leave a slot free, populate the next (still counting from the perspective of the CPU socket). Also, there's one Ethernet jack for the IPMI and two separate ones for the actual system, so check which one you're plugging into. See 5:12. Oh and I think the front panel IO might be mislabeled, but that could also be my cheap-ass case. You possibly need to split one of your connectors (think it was the power LED connector) into two single Duponts. See 3:14 in the video. Regarding 10:50: You do not need a compatible CPU to flash the BIOS if you're using the up-to-date IPMI.
    It's a great board imo, especially considering the price, but the documentation isn't "consumer-ready".

    Just got one of these thanks to you video, migrated my NAS from an Asrock B550 paired with a 3900X to this MB with the same CPU, the IPMI alone was worth it and I can probably sell the old MB for more than this cost.
    The flashing from IPMI seems totally safe too, it has many safetychecks when uploading a file, I could upgrade the BIOS and other firmware without issues.

    On supermicro board you can update bios even without cpu even inserted or machine booted. Would excpect it to be same. BMC basically has access to bios chip and can do whatever it like with it.

    The Aspeed 2500 in youre config is a computer in youre computer, you can update the bios from that because its a different computer and even without a working cpu or anything.And for the Locations from the 24 Pin and 8 Pin they are there because servers have airflow in the front and blast it over the motherboard to the back. the word with youre connecter that you need it connects with a "Backplane". And the Aspeed 2500 that internal usb port ist mostly for data like video wehn youre computer bluescreens and save footage there from a few seconds bevore.

    • @Miyconst

      I don't mind the location of the top side of the motherboard but the 24-pin should have been flipped 180 degrees so the click in latch is not blocked. The 8-pin CPU power should be by the edge of the motherboard not to drag the cord over the other components.

    • @Miyconst

      I would say Ryzen 7 5700(X) is the sweet spot. PBO doesn't have options for CPU TDP throttling.

    Does the ECC reporting work with this MB? It’s often that Ryzen systems supports (or rather “doesn’t block”) use of ECC memory but lack the proper reporting in the IPMI that an event has occurred and what was done.
    Also, I wouldn’t call this a server motherboard. It’s a workstation motherboard. With that said, it could still function very well as a server. :)

    I'm going to argue with you a little bit here: I agree with all your PROs, but your first 3 CONs are--if you evaluate this as a purely server motherboard--not as relevant (to me at least):
    Smarter fan control would be nice, but if this is going in my basement, I care less about whether or not the fans are in permanent blowiematron mode;
    I hardly use the USB ports on my servers so two would be fine, and is in fact typical for this type of board (and if you do need more, just add a bus-powered hub!);
    And lastly, I almost never use on-board networking, so 1gbe/2.5gbe/5gbe is kind of irrelevant to me since I'll just be adding a 10gbe or 25gbe card in one of those slots. Even boards that have onboard 10gbe, it's almost always UTP, so I still need to buy a transceiver for my switch. Would much rather be able to plug in a copper DAC directly and that's much less common for onboard Ethernet.

    • @Miyconst
      @Miyconst  Месяц назад

      Well.. I think we look at a "home server" differently. For me, a home or a private server is something that should be able to operate in a tight apartment and never noticed by other family members once set up. 🤣

    • @MatthewHill
      @MatthewHill Месяц назад

      @@Miyconst That's fair. I'm lucky enough to live in a semi-attached building with a partial basement, and a really, really big drill that I used a couple of years ago to run Ethernet down there so my home server is out of sight & out of mind. I realize not everyone has that luxury.
