i figured that someone who revolves their entire kit around clapping, could do it really fast. Mahito was probably pouring too much energy into the 3rd arm to focus putting pressure with the swords, Todo realizes the loss of pressure and uses his last split second to clap his hands, just my headcannon tho
maybe instead of clapping, the real ability was to activate the switch with some any kind of initiator. Clapping was the initiator for when he was using it for combat, but the fear of death/reaction time of his brain was able to initiate the switch when he couldn't use his hands to do it.

The fight scean in Shibuya does a fun thing where it usually shows the POV of the weaker fighter missing information and not seeing what the stronger fighter is doing. And for 3 Frames exactly, Todo's hands are out of Sight. Todo moved so fast like, Mahito we did not see him clap his hands during that moment. He clapped his hands and that's what happened.
I think it's clear based on the editing of their fight that Todo is capable of perception blitzing Mahito with brief bursts of explosive movement. Building off of this we also see that the sword arm Todo swapped with was snapped in order for it to be a separate third subject for Boogie Woogie (many people don't seem to think about the sword being snapped for some reason which clearly indicates that Todo broke it.) Based on this my impression is that; 1.) Todo blocks the strikes 2.) Mahito attempt Idol/Idle Transfiguration 3.) Todo sees the attack coming straight at him launched with the confidence that he can't use Boogie Woogie. 4.) Todo quickly snaps the blade and claps before the intact blade or the Idol/Idle Transfiguration can hit him (based on how he's above Mahito he might have even tossed it upwards before clapping) 5.) he claps and counter attacks.

Nanami did that subconsciously and not intentional, relying on cursed energy is not viable and risky since mahito affects the soul directly in a blink just like todo clapping mahito's hand in the final battle

Uhhh, my personal theory? Based off what you said by him being able to swap as long as there's a clapping sound, I believe that when Mahito tries to slap him with that third arm when Todo was holding onto the swords, Todo uses the smacking sound the hand made upon contact with his abdomen to swap places with one of the swords so he can kick Mahito into an elevator.
With new things being shown in the manga, almost anything clapping against something can count as a clap. So I’m just gonna say that he clapped his toes together and that’s how.
I think it's plausible that Todo could've clapped his forearms together. His arms could definitely be spaced out enough after stopping the blades that pulling his arms together, paired with Mahito trying to swing the blades in, would create a loud enough clap to be able to trigger Boogie Woogie.

I feel like how Mahito was though, it wouldn't fit with his character. He was frantic, and maybe stupid at times. But he was brutally efficient even if it was just to mess around. I think he was fully intent on going for the killing blow with IT instead of just trying to deflect. when you look at 1:36. The sword seems to be the transfiguration and the extended hand seems to be his own. This anime is bizarre (in a good way) so I love these theories.

if he swapped places with mahito's sword, then that means that he should have appeared at mahito's arm, but he didn't, instead he stayed there and then the sword was on the ground and mahito's arm was back, this can only mean one thing, mahito's arm and therefore arm was below todo and todo swapped that arm with the sword.
The sword was not on the ground, it was in the air where Todo was. Mahito's arm can't move, and if it did that would imply Todo can cut people in half by swapping away only part of their body. You have identified another problem with the scene and mistaken it for a solution.
Todo used mahitos hand clapping against his abdomen to activate his ability before mahito could affect his soul. What is a highfive, but a shared clap. He also does it later, with a literal highfive to mahito.
Todo doesn't have to slap himself, if something makes a sound as he activates his CT, it works (vibraslap) and mahito open palmed his stomach pretty hard, so it made a clap, and todo activated his CT.
if you notice, right after the clap you see mahito has only one blade hand instead of both, it's my theory that while mahito put his technique into the third hand on his right, his og right hand turned back to normal but he was not concentrating on transfiguring todo with that hand. So Todo in his genius uses that pressure that was flying at his face and turned his hand from gripping to clapping mahito's hand
The writer/creator mentioned he forgot to draw or detail it, but Todo brought his hands inwards quickly and let the back of his hands clap together. And boogie woogie is activated by using two fleshy (or specially made artifice) coursing with energy to activate the technique. Because he says boogie woogie is dead after his slap with mahito to bring yuji in. Lost one hand, and his other was thankfully protected mostly by his own energy, but mahito s energy still burned through enough to cause a sudden warp that causes enough friction to burn his hand and fingers. But Todo didn't know it was just slight enough to be healed by the greatest jujutsu healers. Then an artifice able to be made that used his energy gave him the ability to activate boogie woogie again.
I think I might have an actual explanation, but forgive me if I am wrong. Within the later chapters of the manga, it's showed that Boogie woogie's rules on what sound is made to activate the technique. Basically, Todo can choose when to swap, even if he doesn't clap which we see when he fights hanami and Mahito. It does not state, however, that he has to be the person that claps. for all we know, Yuji could've clapped off screen to let Him switch. That, or he got that dumpy.

It is my cannon that he clapped his cheaks simply because it fits with his character and I love I can say that. That said, Its also crazy that its actually possible in universe for that to be the case because of the BS that is binding vows.
I think he did a squat adn then stood up really fast and the sudden expansion and closure of his gigga ass cheeks reverbrated so hard that it begun to sound like a clap unlocking his unknown hidden power.
This is meant to be an effect created by the way the scene is animated. You are meant to feel the way Mahito does in this scene where todo claps so fast you dont even see it happen. A similar thing happens earlier on whenever Yuji is in an elevator shaft with Mahito and appears to get hit by an ability only to be shown outside the elevator as if he teleported, these scenes are animated that way to allow the viewer to feel the confusion and speed of the characters alongside the villian. I feel like it really enhances the scenes especially when watching them for the first time, because you too get to feel how disorienting yujis speed or todos boogie woogie is.

This is meant to be an effect created by the way the scene is animated. You are meant to feel the way Mahito does in this scene where todo claps so fast you dont even see it happen. A similar thing happens earlier on whenever Yuji is in an elevator shaft with Mahito and appears to get hit by an ability only to be shown outside the elevator as if he teleported, these scenes are animated that way to allow the viewer to feel the confusion and speed of the characters alongside the villian. I feel like it really enhances the scenes especially when watching them for the first time, because you too get to feel how disorienting yujis speed or todos boogie woogie is.
