    The other problem with using the Eagles is that Sauron is alive and active. This is the being that was able to shroud the sky in darkness all the way to Minas Tirith, and in the books Boromir mentions that "he can govern the storms in the Mountains of Shadow that stand upon the borders of Mordor. He has strange powers and many allies".
    The Eagles are both powerful and large: Sauron would notice them the moment they entered Mordor and would bring them down, capturing the Ring. It is different when Sauron and the Nazgul are dead and his armies are in chaos without him, allowing them to fly in and out without opposition. However, carrying the Ring to Mount Doom is mainly a stealth mission, and the Eagles aren't helpful there.

    • @guardiansoulblade2673
      @guardiansoulblade2673 5 лет назад +12

      Suaron also thought that whoever had the Ring would start using it to challenge him and since Frodo wasn't using it, Sauron didn't know where to find him until he got to Mount Doom and Claimed it. At least in the book anyway.

    • @godcaoss

      Also, the divinity in LotR (Iluvatar) does not interfere very directly in the world of men, being this the reason why Gandalf came to earth with half power. Eagles are sent by Eru (or Gandalf's master, can't recall right now), and since the stated above, he would not interfere directly in the matter.

      I actually planned on writing something similar but decided not to. Giant birds that normally nest on the other side of the continent are kind of noticeable, and we KNOW Sauron has his own huge winged creatures. Going unnoticed for as long as possible was kind of the felloship's whole point...

  • @DZatheus
    @DZatheus 5 лет назад +19

    There are three small things that I love about this movie.
    How Frodo says to Aragorn "it's taken Boromir" meaning that he understood that it was the Ring that made Boromir try to take it from him and puts no blame on the Gondorian.
    The second thing is the first words that Boromir says when Aragorn goes to him after defeating Lurz are "They took the little ones", completely forgetting his wellbeing and in a way saying "leave me here and go after them".
    The last one is how Boromir felt he let down everyone and failed them and had no hope for humankind and he was hopeless that he couldn't save his city and was about to die heartbroken then Aragorn finally steps up and lifted his spirit before his passing. What a moment, I can't go through that moment without weeping.
    The extended versions make Boromir such a great character.

    • @joeg6478
      @joeg6478 Год назад +1

      Boromir says "I didn't see it" which i took as a callback to the earlier extended scene of the disagreement btwn him and Aragorn about taking the path thru the Gap of Rohan. Boromir initially took offense at Aragorn's distrust of bringing the ring anywhere near mankind. It wasn't till Boromir experienced how quickly he became corrupted causing him to "see" Aragorn's decision that all men could be just as easily corrupted leading to the realization that his people can't use the ring which made him lose the hope that brought him to the fellowship in the first place. Aragorn uplifts him in his final moments by revealing he was strong enough to avoid the Ring's temptation plus pledging to use the strength of his bloodline to ensure "our people" don't fail. This pledge proved to Boromir that his ppl wouldn't need the ring to save themselves if they had a leader like Aragorn. You're right that the extended cut showcased much more than the theatrical release how Boromir's fall and redemption personifying the weakness and nobility of mankind worked to re-affirm Aragorn's faith in men and himself. Boromir's sacrifice basically made Aragorn a king.

    Oh, hey! I actually know something! The reason Elrond didn't shove Isildur into the lava is because they're related. Elrond is half-Elven, and his twin brother Elros chose a mortal life. Isildur is a decendant of Elros, which is part of what gives Numenorians their long life (distant Elven heritage in the bloodline). By this, Aragorn is also Elrond's great-great-etc-great-nephew. This, in turn, is part of why Elrond agreed to raise Aragorn after the deaths of Arathorn and Gilraen.

    So, as a fan from as far back as I can remember, I need to correct Eric a few times. Keep in mind, I'm just making sure the proper info is given. Firstly Elrond did not make the horse heads in the magic wave, that was Gandalf's addition to the activatable river enchantment. Secondly, Elrond holds Vilya, the ring of Air, which likely grants healing powers along with the standard concealment from evil that all the three had. Thirdly, Aragorn got a magic sheath that would keep his sword sharp and untarnished by wear. Lastly, galadriel had nothing to do with the inspiration to make the silmarils, they were inspired by the two trees that had originally produced light for the gods before they made the sun and moon. There was another but I forgot it in my enjoyment of this. I also have some side notes. Gandalf, Saruman, Sauron, and all the other Wizards are called Maiar. The Maiar are the servants and assistants to the Valar, who created all of existance. To all fans who watch the movies, I highly suggest reading through the books, and the Silmarilion, so you can see the true depth of the story that these books conclude. Blidewave, you guys are great and I love how deep you guys dig into whatever your watching, and how much you get me thinking too.

    NOOOOOO! SAURON MADE THE ONE RING BY HIMSELF IN SECRET, TO BETRAY THE ELVES AND DOMINATE THEM. Celebrimbor was the Elven master smith who created the 3 by himself, so even though the One dominates all the others, the 3 were never corrupted. Sauron then attacked Hollin, where the Elf Smiths lived, and took all the rings except for the 3. Sauron then gives the rest to 9 great kings of Men and to the 7 Dwarf Lords, hoping to dominate and control them, but the Dwarves only become greedy and aggressive, the Elves hid their rings so only the Men were truly cursed.

    Gandalf is the Maia called Olorin. He’s existed from creation. The Gandalf who came back was the same being. Maiar can put on bodily form like clothing. The body died but Illuvatar (the One, the creator ) gave him a new physical form (a new suit and haircut) and sent him back to finish the mission. The type of being he is, though, is spiritual (that is, a spirit...like Sauron). Sauron and the Balrog are also Maiar.

    Oh Eric, Eric, you forgot Sauron DID forge the One Ring, him none other :) (HE was also the one who taught the Elves how to forge them, he was their teacher), all the Rings have specific powers, enhance all natural powers and abilities of possessor, plus they stop the effects of time (for mortals it extends their life indefinitely), power of preservation, the Three "understanding, making and healing to preserve all things unstained", the Seven and Nine (the nine allowed their wearers to become sorcerers) were distributed later (the Dwarves of Moria claimed they received their Ring, the same one later inherited by Thrain and taken from him in Dol Guldur, was given to them by elven smiths themselves). The Rings give power "according to the wearer's stature".

    since nobody is commenting, I will do it myself.
    WRONG!! WRONG, wrong.
    the elves made all but the one ring. The one was made by Sauron himself in secret, in the volcano, hence why it could only be detroyed there.
    Sauron touched the lesser rings and installed a backdoor on them, except in the,
    the elvens rings, that the elves managed to hidde from Sauron when they realised what was comming.
    About the Gollum/ Bilbo and the ring.
    Gollum was deep inside a mountain, the more likely outcome would be that a orc, or troll, or other evil being would eventually take the ring and so it would easyly return to Sauron.
    It was unlikely that a Hobbit would take the ring.
    And finnaly to keep this short, the fate of the ring was into hobbit hands, Gollum keepted it safe for 500 year. Bilbo took it from the cave. Frodo carried it to the core of mount Doom, and finally, Gollum destroyed it.
    Man, I still at min 11. this will be a long journey

    In the books I think there are two reasons they don't just use the Eagles to send the Ring to Mordor. The first is that Gandalf does not control them so he cannot order them to bring the Ring to Mount Doom. Second, Mordor is full of Orcs and Humans who could shoot them down with bows and arrows or even spears. In the Hobbit the Eagles even mention that they avoid people because they might get shot, "They would shoot at us with their great bows of yew" (Out of the Frying-pan Into the Fire). So being hit with missiles is a legit reason for me.

    • @MultiWhatever007
      @MultiWhatever007 5 лет назад +4

      Related to your second reason, is that the whole point of sending a small team and even just Sam and Frodo later is that it's kind of a stealth mission, whereas if they sent the Eagles, Sauron could just gather all the archers he can find, attack them with Nazguls on Fellbeasts and, even if they get past that, just prepare an army for when they land. Never understood the whole 'just have the eagles carry frodo' meme

    • @MrQabalist

    the Silmarils weren't inspired by Galadriel's hair. those were inspired by the lights of the Two Trees, and Feanor was thier maker. but they did have an effect on thier owners much like the Ring, making the owner covet them. Morgoth, Sauron's old boss, stole them and possessed them, with made Feanor and his sons take an Oath to reclaim them...an Oath that constantly bit the elves in the ass. the Simarils ended up one in the oceans, one in the earth via volcano, and one in the heavens on the brow of I beleive it's a human hero that travels the sky in a ship. (basically a star). in the Hobbit, it's hinted at that the Arkenstone IS one of the simarils.

    Sauron didn't convince the Elves to make the One Ring. Sauron made the One Ring himself, "in the fires of Mount Doom," the Elves wouldn't forge a ring of power in Mordor for Sauron. The Elves didn't know it was Sauron teaching and aiding them in their ring craft. He changed his appearance to a friendly angelic form giving himself the name Annatar, Lord of Gifts. He approached the Elves as an emissary of the Valar, the gods that many Elves lived with in the western lands.
    He helped the Elves make the Nine and Seven. Then he went off to Mordor to complete his plan and craft the One Ring to rule the others. After he left, the Elves felt they had learned enough that they could do it without him and made the Three. The Ring magic connects the minds of the bearers because Sauron's hidden purpose of corrupting the other ring bearers. Upon wearing their rings they learned of his plans and removed the Rings before he had finished forging the One Ring.

      Frodo is supposed to be 33 on Bilbo's 111th birthday. In the books Bilbo jokes about inviting exactly a 144 guests for their combined ages. There's then a 17 year time skip before Gandalf returns to Frodo to tell him the truth of the ring. So that Frodo is 50 when he leaves Bag End.
      However, the movie doesn't really indicate that much time passed, so Frodo might only be portrayed as 33 or 34 for the movies.

    • @EnergySurge
      @EnergySurge 5 лет назад +4

      48:20 None of the races come from across the sea. All the races originated in the central continent.
      Many of the Elves journeyed into the West at the request of the Valar, the demi-gods of the world. But many stayed behind as well. Eventually some bad stuff happened in the west and a large portion of the Noldor returned to Middle-Earth, ignoring the warnings of the Valar. Feanor and his sons traveled back seeking vengeance against the first Dark Lord, Melkor, who had fled Valinor after committing some heinous crimes. And some other Noldor traveled back with them not so much concerned with vengeance but with the opportunity to create kingdoms of their own.
      When the Noldor reached Middle-Earth the moon rose for the first time. It was pretty dark in Middle-Earth before this. A few days later, I think a week the sun rose for the first time and I believe Men awoke in Middle-Earth at the same time as the rising of the sun. This is the beginning of the First Age of the Sun and the Moon.
      By the end of the First Age, Melkor had been defeated a large wester portion of Middle-Earth had sunk beneath the waves due to the final battle and the land that would become the Gray Havens became coastal real estate. The Men that had aided the West in the battle against Melkor were given an island between Middle-Earth and Valinor. This would become the land of Númenor. But they were forbidden from journeying further West to the Undying Lands.
      During the Second Age, Sauron decided with his boss gone he was going to take over the task of subjugating the world. He got into ring forging at this time. But the Númenóreans had become quite a force by this time. So they sailed a fleet over, marched on Mordor and accepted his surrender and brought him back as a prisoner. He slowly started to corrupt the Men of Númenor, eventually earning favor of the king. He tempted the last king with the idea of sailing on Valinor.
      Sauron's plan worked. Most of the Númenóreans sailed west. Their fleet was destroyed for violating the ban and their island nation was sunk beneath the waves. Some exiles that didn't think it was a good idea left before hand and survived on setting up a kingdom in Middle-Earth. Ilúvatar, the God of the world, decided to remove Valinor from the world and bend the world into a globe so that Men could no longer sail to the Undying Lands and be tempted. Sailing west would now just cause them to circumnavigate the world.
      49:00 So Elves don't come from America, they originated in Middle-Earth like everyone else. Some of them traveled to the West in ages long ago. Some of those that traveled there or were born there returned prior to the First Age. By the time of the Third Age, their ships have to literally sail along a straight path that leaves the curvature of the planet to reach the Undying Lands. They aren't sailing to America at the end.

      Alright, back from a little bit of break to continue watching the second half. I stop watching to type up some of my messages and the first half took me quite a while to get through.
      Overall I've enjoyed the first half of your commentary on the movie. It's great to see those with less knowledge of Lord of the Rings get to watch it with someone that does know quite a bit. I mean no disrespect with all my nit-pick corrections. I just feel that when people don't know, they should get the correct answers. And if you see how long I drone on, it isn't all just nit-picks, in most cases its just a more thorough explanation.
      1:49:51 The movie chose to put this in Rivendell, but there's nothing in the books about where exactly Aragorn's mother was laid to rest. This might just be a memorial.
      1:50:00 No, Aragorn's mother Gilrean was not an Elf. She was a Dúnedain like Aragorn's father. And Dúnedain are just the Númenorean exiles living in Middle-earth.
      1:50:07 All Dúnedain have Elvish blood that they can trace back to the first King of Númenor, Elros, the brother of Elrond. Elrond and Elros were both Half-Elven and given the choice of living as Elves or Men. While Elrond chose to live as an Elf, Elros chose to live as a Man. Elros's line mingled with other houses of Númenor, introducing Elvish blood into their ancestry.
      Aragorn's father died when Aragorn was only two years old, Gilraen took him to Rivendell to be trained by Elrond. They were trying to keep Aragorn's identity a secret to protect him. While growing up in Rivendell, Gilraen gave him the name Estel, meaning Hope, until when he was twenty Elrond revealed to him his true lineage and name. At this point in time she went to live with her people in Eriador, so it stands to reason they would have taken care of her burial.
      The last time Aragorn saw his mother, was about a year before she died. She knew her time was coming and she couldn't face the great darkness of their time. Aragorn tried to comfort her saying he believed there to be light beyond the darkness and he would have her see it. But she only answered (in Elvish), 'I gave Hope to the Dúnedain, I have kept no hope for myself.' Which is fitting since the name she gave to Aragorn in Rivendell was Estel, Hope.

      1:50:50 In the movie he might not want to be king. But in the book he is the acknowledged leader of his people in the North. And as Heir of Isildur he has the right to claim kingship of the southern kingdom. The fact that he hasn't done it yet doesn't mean he doesn't want to.
      When he was twenty and Elrond revealed to him his true identity and lineage he gave him two heirlooms, the Ring of Barahir and the Shards of Narsil. In the movies, he apparently leaves the Shards of Narsil in Rivendell, while in the books he carries them with him on his travels. It is actually funny the movie shows him wearing the other royal heirloom, the Ring of Barahir all the time. If they want us to believe he doesn't want to be king, shouldn't he have left it in Rivendell as well?
      Also in the books, he has Narsil reforged into Andúril before the Fellowship leaves Rivendell.

    I'm not even a Tolkien nerd (would love to be but at the moment just loving lotr and hobbit books and lotr movies) but I still must comment 11 minutes in that Smeagol wasn't "river hobbit". 😄 He was lake folk, people who lived by the lake and were somewhat similar to hobbits. So it's easy to say they were hobbits but they weren't. 😃
    Also, answer to the question of why it was unlikely to hobbit to get the ring is because hobbits rarely left Shire. Where Gollum lived only orcs roamed most of the time, not other creatures. So it was unlikely that something else than orc would pick it up and most unlikely that it would be hobbit.

I thought they weren't really hobbits but they were as much as there were hobbits at that time. Just kinda those weird cousins ;)

    Elrond has the Ring Vilya, which is the ring of air and the greatest of the 3 elven rings. Galadriel holds the ring of water and Gandalf wears Narya the elven ring of fire.
