Fun fact in addtion to Rick's: Commodus and Marcus Aurelius were real people, maximus definitely was not.
Marcus Aurelius is known as the Philosopher King, he was a wise ruler that spent his life in the borders of rome fighting German Barbarians. but he never wanted at any point in time, to give power back to the senate (honestly the senate was usually a bunch of corrupt old men that wanted the power remain with the Aristocracy and not the people)
When Marcus Died (commodus didn't kill him), Commodus basically spent his entire rule not doing what the last 5 emperors before him (who were widely regarded as the best Roman Emperors) did. He spent it spending the Roman treasury for bread and circuses to make the people happy, he spent so much that he was bankrupting the Roman Treasury. he also spent his days in the arena, but there was no danger, he mostly fought animals that absolutely had little to no chance of escaping or harming him. he killed hippos, giraffes, Ostriches, and all sorts of exotic animals.
eventually he was assassinated. and thus the Pax Romana (The Peace inside the borders of the Empire) came to an end. and Rome just steadily went into decline after, it would never reach the same heights that it did during the period of the 5 Good Emperors.

Talking about the accidental cast members, there's a shot in the war sections at the start where Maximus is interacting with his horse, holding the reins and stroking it etc, and like dead centre shot there's a crew member in jeans trying to hide behind the horse's head because he's got trapped in the middle of the frame 😂
I liked the reference to the 2010 Robin Hood that Calvin made at the start of the reaction. It's certainly no Gladiator, but I like the film for whatever reason as an easy-watcher. I'd enjoy that being in the rotation for reactions if the others/Aaron haven't seen it.

There are so many great things about this film, its greatest element being at its core a very basic story told many times before. I’ve seen/read interviews from those pitching the film, and laughing that it was a classic story of a man wronged and his family taken from him, and his journey to avenge them and then join them… but in Rome. A lot developed after this fact but that was the core idea. It’s a story as old as time but that is why it resonates, then add incredible dialogue, performances and musical score and you have a masterpiece.

Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture.
Before Russell Crowe was cast to play Maximus, Hugh Jackman, Tom Cruise, Tom Sizemore, Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas were considered for the role.
The opening scene was filmed in Surrey England, the gladiator training school was filmed in Morocco and the scenes involving Ancient Rome were filmed in Malta for 19 weeks.
Oliver Reed, who played Proximo, died of a heart attack on May 2, 1999. It was dedicated in his memory.
Russell Crowe sustained several injuries during filming and almost died as a direct result.
The scene where Maximus was fighting Tigris Of Gaul, the tiger almost killed Russell Crowe, but thankfully, he walked away with incident.

It wasn't just Surrey, it was just outside Bracknell, between it and Windsor (of Castle fame), called Caesar's Camp, at the end nearest Bracknell. Some decent offroad biking, not super gnarly, not boring flatness, but quite a place for Mountain Bikes, Motorbike offroading and horseriding.
Some of the soldiers were hires from gyms and so forth, but unbeknownst to us, disguised as an audition for some dating drama thingy, so I missed out on being a soldier.
Lots of people in the medicine tent because they wallped each other with fake swords and cracked bones because they weren't stunties or actors, just regular joes.

I loved this movie when I first saw it. Like Rick, I know some history about the movie and the historical inaccuracy. I'm a history buff and I found out later about it how, Commodus is based on an emperor but not real. That gladiators didn't really fight to the death. They usually fought animals or each other but rarely died. And what people don't really notice, is that there were a few female gladiators though they were rare. But despite all the inaccuracies, I still give high praise to this movie, it's so iconic.
