I think a lot of that has to do with the comics ending. Kirkman from what we know told nobody, so it seems like they never anticipated having to expand the rules of walkers themselves to keep the franchise interesting.
I think it's partly by design. Not in the sense that they meant for it to take this long, but in that the show was very intentionally against trying to explain the walkers and the wider world and the lore of that universe, remember how they said they regretted all the stuff with Jenner in season 1 etc. I see it as them just now opening up now that the main show is finished and they have more freedom to tell other stories within this universe. I like it though.
It's a real shame they got rid of the first director, or didn't stick with the smarter zombies in season 1. Seeing them use tools and such in the first season could have easily led into these mutations naturally throughout the show.
I think they wanted to keep the genre within survival horror so exploring the science of a cure or the virus origins would turn it into sci-fi territory.

The single greatest scene in all the WD universe is hands down that Heironymous Bosch painting looking orchestra of the marrionette walkers fused with various instruments taking advantage of bone, sinew and isolated gas pockets to play a dirgelike rendition of Ravel's Bolero. The puppetmaster of all this magnificence is possibly the craziest looking emaciated meth-head this side of the ATM scene in Breaking Bad..
As mentioned, I imagine they could engineer them to expire over a longer set period of time like we see in DD season 1. Like a 10 minute expiration, inject them with the serum and watch them go nuts on walkers for that time before exploding.

I just watched the entire second season and the walker variants/experiments are basically forgotten plot points by the writers. There is only two scenes of em and they were just used for action scenes.
You know it’s weird we seen the variant walkers in season 1 were they were climbing, running and picking stuff up for example bricks and rocks. We seen them again in season 11 episode 17. I believe when the outbreak was starting the French scientists were just testing the walkers but they messed up until they got the running walkers. Just remember one thing about them they are more dangerous than any other walkers! Plus why weren’t they in TWOL??? Great job on the video!

I always liked to think that as a side effect for turning, the virus hadn't fully corrupted the mind and body and thus the walkers still obtained certain habits before the virus took over all corpses over time. Then suddenly overtime the virus evolved and thus affected the corpses as well

I wonder if these fast walkers deteriorate much more quickly than regular ones so they're continuing the experiments to try and create the perfect weaponised walker that's badass and and won't fall aprt within a few months? Previously, the scientists were no doubt trying to find a cure / vaccine / treatment but got it way wrong and ended up with the burners as well as the fast walkers. It's a little confusing at this point.
I believe the walkers in France are some how have all become too far altered to accurately experiment on as the walkers evolve over time but perhaps a retro altered wildfire virus was released in France early on in attempt to combat the reanimation process but in stead created what we see today hence that's why they have to go to America or far off locations where the retro virus hasn't had an effect giving them the perfect fresh template to test on and see how it can alter an walker
I absolutely love the history side of TWD, like the walker origins, people during the fall, it is so interesting. Hopefully we get more answers to the virus in s2. Maybe even Daryl finding a Jenner tape?
If I had a nickel for every time the word variant was used as a plot device in my favorite TV shows, I’d have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but its weird that its happened twice.
Its weird to me it seems nobody thought of as a team holing up in a sturdy building on say the 3rd floor of a skyscraper or solid brick type building with lots of supplies(food, water)and lots of ammo and sitting there for a year just killing zombies with sniper rifles, explosives, and various other forms of hands off distance types of weaponry until there are none left. Can herd them in from other areas with helicopters(and loud noise like speakers to draw them along), do resupplies to the buildings with the choppers. Could even take down an entire city of zombies, then build walls or heavy fortifications around the safe areas until theres no zombies in the area, then move to another city and do the same. Have survivors move into the safe areas, and slowly expand until theres no zombies left. Could take years but i bet it could be done with good organization and solid no risk plans.

Liberating a country the size of the U.S. would be virtually impossible, by the time you “cleaned up” the east coast the rest would have long since rotted away. In Europe, maybe it would go better because of tighter buildings and smaller countries. Such Sweden, Norway or Denmark could manage to clean up their area, but what about the rest of the walkers from other countries ? The French from Spain, Germany and Poland alone would have over 150 million walkers to eradicate, I'm not even counting the rest of the countries.

So if it's rare..what is the chance that this particular Violet team member that's working on the virus, JUST SO HAPPENED to be one of these rare variants, found out about upon her death? So I suspect she used herself as a subject in a way. Perhaps injecting herself with "something" would help her better understand how to get to a desired solution. I would lean toward thinking the entire variant cohort, was not a naturally occurring rarity..and moreso created from those means Jenner was talking about. Steroidal therapy using cardiac plaques. Jumpstarting the brain..perhaps retaining function..Such as the just-killed Violet member raging to the door after her killer, suggesting she's aware of what just happened. If the cohorts were created players, he'd be stating the obvious. I think they can pretty much be watched in any order as of Daryl Dixon season 1, but I personally would watch the ones who live first as it wraps up plot lines from the main show while Daryl introduces new ones

I think without a doubt the France variants will appear in America, the shipping vessel is actually bringing the one we see to France so there must be some sort of pouvoir lab or something in the US, as for her getting shot in the head, I initially believed that too but it’s pretty hard to tell, it seems to be a pretty debated topic looking at the comments of my variants explained video.
I think there are connections in these plots, but while I think your answers are probably more reasonable I'd like to push forward my theory. We don't have a timeline for the World beyond post credit scene, there's not nessicarily a reason that it couldn't happen after the Daryl show. Something II've been thinking about since the show came out is the idea of intro storytelling, Dead City shows us the fall of new york, Daryl shows us ominous red smoke filling the streets of Paris. I think that smoke was an actual weapon, an early attempt at combating the virus which lead to the creation of the Burners through unknown means (which would help inforce the interest in American imports, as it would be "untainted" stock). Following from this attempt they landed on the "short circuiting the brain" idea, which was potentially promising enough that multiple team members took the procedure as some kind of vaccine, however it had the consequence of making the aggressive variants after death in some instances, which I imagine lead to the downfall of the Lab. Fast forward to now, and I suggest the idea that the Daryl show is in some capacity about "you made it worse". Were seeing Genet working with the same sciensts to re-engineer these fast walkers and they'll get out of control and cause a second apocalypse for the few survivors, leading to the sweeping jailing. Now I think it's likely this is all untrue, though I do think its cool, and you can certainly punch some holes but its good food for thought.
If you want kind of a 'tie in' watch The Night Eats The World. Totally not related to the series but close enough but you can use it as a a related spinoff.

Even so, they still have to explain how did the virus infect everyone globally so fast, even for airborne pathogens. In Kirkman's original work, the source was either hinted to be "space radiation" or in that non-canon one-shot: ALIENS. This is just milking the series by adding more McGuffins at this point.
