Never get tired of the historical sites that you bring us to, and really digging the music track at the end there with the museum footage also - Gabe's inner DJ rarely disappoints.
One of the most beautiful places you have traveled to. The stone mosaics especially are so incredibly beautiful. To be able to wander there alone (mostly) must have been amazing. More than I've ever known about that part of the world. Thank you and please keep up the good work and as always, please stay safe.
It's not a very touristy place. When it comes to ancient Macedonian sites Aigai (or Vergina) and Dion are much more popular (though still not as known as other sites). Aigai has more to see from a tourist point of view (tomb of Philip II of Macedon and the overall royal tombs museum and the Palace which has seen much more restoration than the one in Pella). The thing that bothers me with most ancient sites in Greece is that what you see is around 20% of the total site. Pella is an example, rest is still buried and waiting to be excavated. Who knows when it will happen but I guess it requires a lot of funds... Another example is the Roman city of Nicopolis one of the best preserved sites in Greece. When I visited it was in such a abandoned state especially the theater. Now they started restoring it and it already looks glorious compared to the sad ruins I saw in 2013.

Pella, ancient capital of King Archelaus of Macedonia at the end of the 5th century BC and birthplace of Alexander the Great. The city lay in northern Greece, about 24 miles (39 km) northwest of Thessaloníki. Originally known as Bounomos, the city developed rapidly under Philip II, but, after the defeat of the last Macedonian king by the Romans (168 BC), it became a small provincial town.
I think North Macedonians are confused about their history , they are a Slavic peoples that came to the Balkans around 600 AD . Their language is Slavic . Yes the area is geographically Macedonia as described by the Romans . However North Macedonians cant claim ancestry no more than Egyptians or Persians can claim Greek ancestry just because Greeks built cities in those locations .
Interesting to see the mosaics using the white, grey and black rock. You still see those colored river rocks used in flooring on some of the Greek islands today....eg Rhodes/Rodos

Thanks for the ancient history lesson. I love all that old stuff. I recently watched an old Hollywood movie about the life of Alexander the Great with Richard Burton as Alexander. They tried to make him look very young but didn't quite pull it off. Still, it was a fun movie to watch. If you like ancient history, you should read Herodatus' book, The Histories. He was a Greek historian even before Alexander's time. There's some crazy stuff in there. There was this Persian (I think) king who invited a man over for dinner, and to get back at him for something or other, a betrayal probably, he cooked up the man's own son and had it served to him at the dinner. Yeah. I think I would have preferred to be a peasant far away from all the palace intrigue.

I'm not sure whether the books are available in English, but French author Roger Peyrefitte did extensive research on Alexander the Great, culminating in three volumes, nearly 2,000 pages in all, including maps etc. Peyrefitte explored the countries (indeed: continents) conquered by Alexander, which probably makes him the principal authority on the Macedonian. I like the film Alexander, among other things because it freely depicts the great man's bisexuality. And let's not forget the wonderful score by Vangelis!

Present-day North Macedonia has nothing to do with Ancient Macedonia in the Hellensitic era. Instead, North Macedonia originate in Yugoslavia as an independent country and nation. Before the creation of Yugoslavia, North Macedonia was part of Serbia and was known as Southern Serbia. In the middle ages, it was in the heart of the Serbian empire.
I suppose you refer to the actual MNKEYDONIANS that are the present inhabitants of Paeonia. Since Paeonia is part of Macedonia, than it sure as hell is relevant with Macedonia/Hellenistic era/Alexander etc. Paeonia is literally the NORTH part of Macedonia as well, so the name is not actually irrelevant. Paeonia is a region within Macedonia just as Pella is for example. There are many Macedonian monuments/ancient stuff to be found in Paeonia as well. Funny guy suppose to "sound smart" XD. You dont even know what Paeonia, which was part of Yugoslavia YES (NOT Serbia. Serbia is the one and only region it was before and after Yugoslavia split in various regions), was called before it first was named "FYROM". The name "North Macedonia" that appeared these last years, is only accepted by those who are jealous of Hellenic history and specifically of Macedonians. The name is however as said not actually IRRELEVANT since the region IS part of Macedonia. Gabriel explains it as well in the video. However the leftist government in Hellas, and AAALLL the other governments in this world that accepted this "title" of the region, did it of jealousy and dislike of Macedonia/Hellas, since they actually also call the the inhabitants - the "mnkeydonias" - "North Macedonians" when they are not Macedonians at all. XD
@@violetstameski664 The modern country called Republic of North Macedonia (Former Yugoslavia) was never Macedonia in its history, it was originally ancient Paeonia /Dardania and was southern Serbia, and at times Bulgaria. It got the name "Macedonia" in 1944 by the Yugoslav comintern as a ploy because the Yugoslav Comintern wanted to invade and annexe the Northern Greek region of Macedonia.
@@hansgruber2719 Wrong It was always Paeonia, what the Romans called it for their own administrative purposes is immaterial. As far as the Paeonians were concerned it was still Paeonia.Romans gave weird names to all their provinces. Just to give you an idea, they called Scotland Caledonia, Wales Cambria and Ireland Hibernia. Roman province of Macedonia also went as far down as north of Athens. The region of the Former Yugoslavia was NEVER Macedonia in its history but it went by many names, but the name MACEDONIA was only applied in 1944.

Are you planning to visit the tomb of Philip II in Vergina, as well?
Good suggestion!
@@travelandtash Vergina is absolutely an impressive and unique ancient site. However, it is not allowed to film inside the tomb.

Thank you for sharing this history! Wow! We truly enjoyed this video! We love Greece cannot wait to return! ~Cara 😊
Hi Gabriel! Impressive you are in Greece. Don't forget to visit also Vergina, the royal tombs of king Philip, Alexander's father.
This summer is very hot with disastrous fires. Take care and have a nice time!
Gabriel, after all these years watching you, I think you became wiser and multiglobal. After visit all the places that Alexander the Great has conguer ,now you visit Macedonia the place where all started.Keep traveling and be wiser !
Definitely doing historic sites with narrative content is a good move, given the plethora of city walking tours on the increase.
That was exciting. Thanks explaining the Macedonia and Greece, and Hellas, which a explains a lot.
Man, I'd love to hang out at that site! I might bring an umbrella, though.
If you haven't visited already I highly recommend visiting Vergina where the tomb of Philip is.
Awesome video Gabriel! I suggest to continue to Vergina to complete your journey to ancient Macedonia. Even more impressive sightseeing there! Keep up the amazing work!
Agreed - Vergina looks a must visit with its tombs.
Love it! Love seeing the old ruins of ancient times. Reminds me of walking the streets of Pompeii in Italy.
love your videos and thank god you know about Greek history.Big respect to you Gabriel...Greeks loves you!!
🍀Ciao... Gabriel.. Great historical video.. Super work of you.. Compliment.. Excellent... 🍀
Absolutely loving this, Gabriel. It hadn’t occurred to me to put Pella on my list of locations to visit… but oh my goodness… I’m definitely going to visit this place. I really want to see the mosaics with my own eyes! 😮🙌
Alexander said at his death "everything is just waste in life" sad but true 😭💙
The Library of Alexandria would testify perhaps not. Some truth came from such a short stint in this world.
Just ask what happened to it... and the Real Questions begin. Who stole all of those works of antiquity?
@@theonewithnoname8137 well my historian friend I would only say to you that if he didn't say that doesn't mean that it isn't true! However we can argue much much longer but the person (Alexander) himself is dead now. So I don't think that arguing on it really matters.
@@finaldestination513 who is arguing? This is sharing of ideas. 😊
And besides, read my statement closer. It adds color to where yours stops. Life is what we make it. Look at Alexandria and do not think I am arguing, but rather agreeing with your perspective while sharing mine. Being a beacon of hope, when life does suck, yet we must persist. Just wish we had memorex or some recording device then would leave no opening to different perspective. Love and peace.
Alexandria was a Library, by the way.
No, actually that was the saying of Saint Gregory of Nyssa after visiting Alexander's tomb.
Wow, thank you for showing us this amazing collection of ruins and antiquities in Pella. It's an amazing place that I wasn't aware of.
Google for Vergina (near Pella) it's far more impressive and king Philip the 2 royal tomb is there. Many tourist offices from Thessaloniki makes the "Pella and Vergina" daytrip.
I wonder if during non pandemic times it is busy with tourists, or if this particular spot just happens to be off the beaten path. And your commentary was fascinating.
Alexander the Great just KEPT GOING, KEPT GOING. Way to go! Reminds me of a certain RUclipsr who seems to be all over the place...Gabriel the G? Yes the movie is very underestimated..
Good analysis on this complex issue. Better than most videos online. I can see you read into it and gave an objective presentation.

I, like you gabriel, am fascinated with ancient history. You could be a Greek guide with all the information you researched.
Pella, ancient capital of King Archelaus of Macedonia at the
end of the 5th century BC and birthplace of Alexander the Great. The city lay
in northern Greece, about 24 miles (39 km) northwest of Thessaloníki.
Originally known as Bounomos, the city developed rapidly under Philip II, but,
after the defeat of the last Macedonian king by the Romans (168 BC), it became
a small provincial town.
You are incorrect. After the Battle of Pydna in 148 B.C. the Romans broke up Macedonia into four smaller Kingdoms.
before 25 centuries PELLA ----- MACEDONIAN LAND .
ALEXANDER THE GREAT is born in MAKEDONIJA ! ! !

Amazing Gabriel. Great telling of the story. In that heat too!
Decades of national brainwashing will do that. You can't reason with Skopians, this what they believe despite what history says otherwise.

Yeah. I think I would have preferred to be a peasant far away from all the palace intrigue.
you should visit Vergina near Pella where the museum and the tomb of Philip the second, the father of Alexander the Great, are
Really cool spot to visit. Thanks for sharing

Pella is a fabulous place.. history that touches the soul.
One thing i want to correct you on.. which north macedonia was at one point part of the kingdom it was only 10% and that occured only under Philip 2 when he needed a buffer between the illyrians and Paeonians.
North Macedonia currently resides on the land of Ancient Paeonia which was annexed and remained self administrative.
Enjoy your travels and eat some good greek food.

First let me said, thanks for going into so much detail in this video. Were the tile/pebble floors original or were they reproductions and placed at that site? Thanks again
The pebble floors of Pella are original
Yes, they're original. Probably they were reconstructed to some extent from the original materials.
I wish that you could shoot even moore videos cause i like them👍👍🥇
Bravo Gabriel you talk the truth.

How did it get its name of Macedonia then?
@@rafaellagaribaldi9391 Patently false, it bears this name since the Roman province of the same name.

About keeping cool on a long hike: Sandals and a damp sarong might have been an ancient style too, but there's surely another mosaic somewhere with this theme.
So, @29:23 a cool room appears with those dried easter palms strewn on the floor and I'm imagining those cool walls might have some sketching & suggestions. That olde pipe could hold a discrete hammock too, I believe. Is this room somewhere today's Diogenes might hang, or will better morning light be found in Corinth on this trip?
