In Greek Mythology when God Poseidon was chasing giant Polivoti with Zeus orders he cracked with his triane island Kos and throw that big stone to him, This stone is Nisyros island❤
Yup - those shrines by the road are for the people who died at that location in car accidents - but not only for that purpose, some are just small shrines. Those are called iconostases or kandilakia...
A great video - v interesting and varied- Nisyros looks very beautiful and definitely somewhere we now intend to visit. We’re actually traveling from UK to Thassos island at the end of June, we know unlikely but would be great to see you go there or even accidentally bump into you on a walk! 🇬🇷
Oh,I love Thasos. I live in central Greece and Thasos is a good and more accesible destination, because I don't need to travel long and endless hours aboard a ship or a ferry. Thasos is ideal in many aspects. But it is being discovered by more people, year by year and it is now a bit not that easy going like it was in the past. In the late 80s,when I first spent holiday time there,it was a secret paradise really.
Great video! I'm an Aussie who just fell in love with the Greek Islands 25 years ago. I have travelled to 9 of them and at the age of 51, I would love to visit more. Greece is a magical place.
It's well known Aussies have great taste & that's why I decided to visit there in '63. I was 4 & its been a long visit. Even if you don't get there, look up Nidri the beaches & more on Lefkas - even Winston used to take his vacations there.
Hey Gabriel! Our traveling RUclips family just landed in Nepal, and might end up doing the Langtang Trail if the weather doesn’t break in Lukla. Enjoy Greece!
Hey Gabe -- you mentioned this is your 35th Greek Island -- is there a link or some text anywhere that says which ones are your faves and/or the pros and cons of each? Maybe you did a video on this somewhere that answers it? A lot of your subs would enjoy something like that.
Gabriel, question, for you, please: Provided that you ever take a rest from travelling, and decide to settle down anywhere, would that "Anywhere" ever be ... Greece? Another question for you, please: You seem to pack a lot into your days. On average, what time of the day do you get up and then, hit the hay? Curious only because you seem to make a lot of hay whilst the sun is shining, every day.
It’s nice to see that people from other countries visit other islands than Mykonos and Théra (Santorini). There are sooooo many different islands with different vibes that is a shame that 80% of the tourists only know Mykonos… 🇬🇷Hellas isn’t just Mykonos guys! Take your research and visit less known islands!
A beautiful ❤️ Very Quiet Peacefull place of Nysirpd Greece 🇬🇷 I love it 😍 thanks sir Gabe For your Wonderful walk around tour Godbless from the Philippines 🇵🇭 sir Vhin 🙏👍👍👏👏👏
Moussaka is great. You can cook it when you visit your mother in California. Gabriel, you can use your mother's kitchen to cook the moussaka. It is very rewarding. 🥘
Hey Gabriel, I thought for sure you would buy that place with the toilet in the hallway and fix it up so you could have a place to stay when you come to Greece. Then you can rent it out during the times you're not going to be there. LOL You know it's not a bad idea if you have lots of money to invest. If you like Greece like you do, you could go there every year and spend 3 months exploring. That enclosed two wheel thing you saw was a motorcycle and they enclose it with that shell. I was thinking about buying one of them for here in Thailand because of all the rain we get but I bought a new Honda 350. It's a little big for me because of my balance problem so I'm gonna put a sidecar on it. That way I can go anywhere I want to and carry a tent and all kinds of other stuff.
A small, quiet Dodecanese island in the south Aegean Sea between Kos, Tilos and Astypalea, Nisyros is most well-known for its active volcano that has one of the world's largest hydrothermal craters, as well as its hot springs including Loutra and Pali.
I haven't watched the video yet (something to look forward to this evening!), but I recently worked remotely from Skopelos for two weeks, although Nisyros was my second choice of island. I only chose Skopelos in the end because the WiFi in the Airbnb I found in Nisyros didn't sound that reliable! I was more than happy with my Skopelos choice, but still hope to get to Nisyros later in the year. 😊
Another beautiful video to enjoy as the perfect compliment to my cup of coffee this morning in cold rainy WA state! Thanks for these amazing glimpses into your travels in paradise.
Nice video as always.Any plans to visit north Aegean islands?(Chios, Lesbos, Lemnos)They are very beautiful with lot of history to see... Wish you the best for your travells. P.s.I said it before in an other video of yours and i will say it again. At 34:54 you are looking like Gerald from the Witcher videogame when is ready to loot a chest in ancient Greek ruins...😆
Hi Gabriel, Stunning pictures of the volcano these Islands over the years must have experienced some bad earthquakes at least that's how I'm viewing the damage, and some people just decided not to come back. I often wonder whether you're deciding on seeking Greek citizenship and also seems a good place to fly out from the middle of Europe close to all the areas you travel to. There's no doubt it's a fascinating country a mix of the modern world and the past a very unique country.
@@margietucker1719 Depends on the country or your political/elite status for having more than two. Too many things going on in Greece yet that tourists may not know about, it is good to wait until things clear up in about another 2++ years or who knows how much more, like 2030.

Greece is hugely popular! In 2019 it had over 31 million visitors. That puts it 8th on the Europe list, behind countries such as France, which has the highest number of visitors in the world, Italy, Spain and UK. Try getting a room on a busy island like Mykonos in August, when you’re also competing with Greek tourists!!
Ann Williams yeah, but compared to Spain it’s still kinda low tho no? It should be top3 with how awesome it is. But maybe we should be grateful, because then it would a lot more crowded than it is now...
I agree that makes a lot more sense. In the comments under the previous video people said it was a toilet, but that doesn't seem like the right place for one. Looks more like a water storage tank.
Thanks for that great video As a matter of fact my dad was born in that old village called Emborio He then left Nysiros for Melbourne I personally spent quite some time at Emborio as a kid in the late 60´s and I can remember having used what you thought was a toilet. Are there any danger of toxic gases, like CO2, in the lowest areas of the central crater? Who would inform you about that in Nisyros? They are invisible odorless, and people have been known to pass out from them, like in northern Long Valley in CA.
Gabe, Do you know if there are boats running from the islands off the Turkish coast like Nishyros or Kos to Turkey? A while back I once took the boat from Kos to Bodrum. I know because of political tensions and now Covid such service may be spotty. Thanks. Steve
I took the ferry from Kos to Bodrum a few years ago. But I'm not 100% sure of the situation now. You could check ferries.gr and ferryhopper, hopefully they will clarify.
pretty sure there are ferrys which run from Fethiye to Rhodes also ferrys rhodes to marmaris also ferrys to samos from kusadasi and ferry from Çesme to Chios also kos to bodrum also day boats to or from Meis, Greek island and Kas, turkey
Political tensions mean nothing when it comes to trading. There is a tremendous amount of exchange between Turks and Greeks on a daily basis and this happens not only in the islands but in the mainland too. On the north-eastern border with Turkey,in Evros, there is serious traffic of cars and vehicles coming in and going out of Greece daily, especially those who head towards Istanbul (or,Constantinople).
That is not a toilet but a cistern (water reservoir),, you can see the groove around the top, that's were the lid would go to keep it sealed,, you retrieve the water just like you would a well.
It must have been a tough, hard life for the locals living in those mountain villages before tourism. Maybe they had some goats or sheep but there doesn`t seem to be much arable land for farming.
You are right. Plenty of the inhabitants had moved abroad, since the 30s or the 40s,due to the lack of employment and as a consequence, due to poverty, choosing destinations like USA,Canada or Australia. Loads of Greeks from various islands live abroad, generation to generation.
Loved it! I was going to go to the Canary Islands and then to Morroco, but then 2020 hit and that ended the plan. Now I'm considering it again. Have you been?
Greece looks fantastic, and one day I would like to check it out, but I feel my search will be limited to where I can find affordable accommodation, and it seems that it is limited in Islands like the one that you are currently travelling in Gabriel. Do you have any other advice to help those that don't have a big budget ? much appreciated.
If you're okay with staying in hostels or camping then that's the cheapest way to go. Otherwise check the booking websites like booking.com, agoda, etc. and try to find accommodation you can afford. If you search for different islands on the same dates it will give you a good idea of the overall price difference between those islands.
We are finally here. Writing to you from nisyros! Thank you for letting us know about this island. And now we are here visiting for a week. There is no way to truly capture it. We love this place so far.
Little shrines in Greece are part of their, and mine, orthodox religion, it is not a shrine, like in India, it is a way to celebrate christianity, you light candele for the dead, it is a sign that you are in orthodox cristian country, where people are in strong conection with God and their anciestestors...Pardon my lack of spelling and english grammar.
Greece is beautiful, honestly I crve visiting Greece, and love their ancient history but don't feel safe according to politics and their radical movements.
One day my dream is to see these islands..but with our modern way of life I'm sure it will only be for a week before going back to work to pay bills is necessary.
A water container does make more sense, but I guess if it was a toilet it may have been a squat one that was separated from the stairs by a curtain or wooden door?
You been a favorite of mine but when you said "Greece is my favorite country" this Greek American became quite happy!

Great job working your way around the world
wow you can film a thriller in this island thank you again ..for the video
I wonder what that house you showed costs? Looks like you get electricity. What a place to settle!
Most, if not not all the rocks on the island must be Igneous rock
Greece is beautiful, honestly I crve visiting Greece, and love their ancient history but don't feel safe according to politics and their radical movements.
One day my dream is to see these islands..but with our modern way of life I'm sure it will only be for a week before going back to work to pay bills is necessary.
