- A switch problem at 96th Street led to this 2 train being rerouted via the 1 line to 242nd Street. To reduce passenger confusion, the train crew smartly changed the electronic signage of the train to the 1 line. Enjoy!

Glad to see a conductor and motorman who know what they're doing. A lot of times they'll switch 2s and 5s if there's an issue. Usually, it'll say, "This is a number 2 train running via the 5 line. But, a 142 on the 1? That's crazy!

Even I am impressed and cast into the twilight zone. People should know that in the 1970s a Flushing train was diverted to Astoria with people and the conductor announcing repeated warnings to mind the gap. No pictures but its from an emminent and reliable source (DH).

Your basically saying the Flushing line which is the 7 went to The Astoria Line and since IRT lines have a big gap in BMT platforms, the train Operator or conductor said to mind the gap
That's even more absurd and rare since it was the 1970s
IRT and BMT trains have different platform lengths, i doubt that was hard for people to go.
And, 7 via the N (Formerly the R to Astoria)? And it was real... Absolutely crazy.

I have to admit; that VVVF does sound very similar to the Alstom Metropolis 98B for the Warsaw Metro.
It wasn't just this 2 train, listen to the announcement at the beginning.

Isaiah muniz the 9 did not make any sense because the numbers of IRT lines are 123 456 7 if 9 is here it’s 1239 456 7 does not make sense because it’s not in order. It should have been a diamond 1.

The switch off Manhattan to Van Cortlandt Park bound 1 train (Marble Hill- 225th) meaning she's recognizing that Marble Hill Section is in the Bronx more than Manhattan it would've said Bronx Bound.
I just don't see why Marble Hills belongs to Manhattan yet it is not part of Manhattan Island.
jonathan chan History is the reason why. It used to be part of the Island, but the Harlem River was rerouted through a more direct route. For a while, it used to be an Island, but the old path was filled it, connecting it to the Bronx.

They need NTTs on the 1. Since the New South Ferry is up and running, There's no need for the first 5 cars to be (hopefully) opened anymore. This is still a awesome catch!

Well, the reason why NTTs weren't on the 1 line when the loop was operational was because there's no shield cover for the NTTs. They were only made for the SMEEs.

Incidentally, this wasn't the only notable diversion for the day.

Transit Railfan That had to do with no service on the 2 and 5 from 3rd ave 149 to there last stops in the bronx due to disabled train at west farm/ tremont. That was around 7am which lasted around an hour which service was partially restored between 180 to dyre ave and Wakefield. Shuttle buses were provided for those affected stations between 3rd ave to 180 st. until around 9:30 to 10 am which train service resumed.

Yes that's allowed. The trains are completely interchangeable (as far as the number lines go). As long as the train's length is not an issue it can operate in customer service on the line. If the train cannot get back to it's terminal, they'll use it where it is to run on another line to pick up the slack.

The nice trains are referred as R142A, R160A, R160B, R160 Cuomo, And R179. R143's Are just R160 But with R142 propulsion :-:

Nice catch and this line (1 train Westside local) definitely needs the R142 because the current trains it uses date back from the mid-1980s R62 & R62A which are now suffering breakdowns an example of this would be one train 96th Street Broadway to 110th Street Cathedral Parkway taking 20-25 min instead of 5-10 min if the R62A or R62 breaks down
Breakdowns those are the best reliable trains in the system and the 1 is so consistent with those trains get your facts straight I don’t want to see a R142 near the 1 line the R62As are doing just fine

R262's aren't going to the (1) or (3) They're going exclusively on the Lexington Avenue line because they're getting CBTC first. While the (1) and (3) gets displaced NTT's from the (4) and (5). Lexington Avenue is getting CBTC followed by 7th Avenue. So while R262's are on Lexington, the R142 and R142A's will be out getting retrofitted with CBTC technology by then the MTA is gonna place them on the (1) and (3) lines and the (6) has to get R262's in order for CBTC so priority is definitely 4, 5 and 6 and of course anything the 5 gets the 2 shares as well
For some people that doesn't understand. The R142's and R142A's that are on the 4 and 5 are compatible with CBTC but they have to be retrofitted. The R142 and R142A's didn't come with the technology they're 20 years old. While those are taken away to be fitted, the R262's will replace them (and are CBTC equipped with the technology off the bat). By the time R142 and R142A's are back, the MTA would've started working on CBTC for 7th Avenue. The important thing is here is that the R262's definitely have to be on Lexington. And the 42nd Street Shuttle is getting R262's as well.
Remember, in the MTA the oldest trains don't always get replaced directly with newer trains. There's a lot more to it
Lexington Avenue is the Busiest line in the A Divison. That's why the MTA is trying to get the second phase of SAS to 125th street to ease congestion over to Lexington Avenue. The MTA wants All R262's on Lexington Avenue (4), (5) and (6) lines for Lexington Avenue CBTC the (1) and (3) lines will get displaced NTT's from the (4) and (5) lines

Why it hit the gap
I assume the train that ran on the 1 line for a time ran light back to the East 180th Street yard after the switch problems cleared up at the 96th Street station.

redphone243 I say the 1 line because the r62s on the 3 are fine where they are for now. Why not put some r62as on the 2/5 lines. Maybe at least 2 sets.
Karen Evans Not happening. The 2 and 5 trains will forever share cars, so having R62As (even two sets) will not work. Those two sets can be the difference between normal service and bad delays on the 2 and 5 lines.

Kai Freeman Could happen. Assuming that the R262 order totals to 1500, I expect 30 of the cars to be I. 6-car consists for the 42nd Street Shuttle. This leaves 1470 cars in 5-car consists. I would expect 2, 4, and 5 to get 450 cars each, with another 120 cars for the 3 line. As for the R142s, 400 cars can go for the 1, 460 for the 6, and the rest for the 3. The 3 fleet would have 290 cars. The remaining 220 R142As would then go on the 7 line for increased service.

Kevin Bravo That's not possible. If 2 was suspended extra 1,3,and 5 trains would be operated, and the fact that 7 is an independent line that MTA is ready to switch to CBTC and then ATO means it can only have R188 on it.
