I knew Ernie and also Sterling. I think Brian forgot to say, that prior to putting together the Slinkies, As I recall Ernie was the first to sell strings in gauges as opposed to sets. The most popular choices by his customers came to be marketed and sold in Slinky sets with different gauges and colors. For many many years I personally bought separate strings to form my favourite set, and asked Sterling for that combination a long time ago. Happy to see that the Ultra Slinky set is now in place. That's the set to use for my playing style. Give them a try folks and enjoy the ease of bending in the top and the twang in the bottom. I love :-) Regards from Denmark
Ernie Ball 10-52 Heavy Bottoms were my jam back in the day. Who doesn’t have a black Ernie Ball guitar strap that’s never been washed?!?!? Respect ✊🏽 to Ernie Ball
I own a Music Man StingRay 5 - bought it with my grandfather's legacy and it's one of my most valued possessions. I've played Ernie Ball strings for as long as I can remember too - sure I've gone over to other brands from time to time but I alway end up back on Ernie Ball strings.
I have been using Ernie Ball strings for over 20 years. 9's, 10's and just tried the hybrid. I did not know until now that I need a Music man. You, Dan and Mick have costs me thousands. Thank's Josh
Every one of my guitars stay strung with Ernie Ball. My favorite is my SE Standard 24 with 48-11 strings. It holds tune amazingly. My back up LTD H-301 is strung with Not Even Slinky strings. My drop tuned Schecter C-1 Platinum has a custom gage that goes 54,48,38,28,18 and 14. They all sound amazing and feel spectacular. I've played Ernie Ball strings ever since I started playing 14 years ago and I have no plans on switching.
@JHS Pedals as JHS artist and an Ernie Ball/ Music Man artist, thx so much for this video. Great content.. Wish more ppl knew the amazing history of the Ball family and EBMM
That blue metal flake guitar is definitely to die for! For me, Ernie Ball is definitely synonymous with Power Slinkys. By themselves, they are great. But with drop tuning, you get some grit that will shake your fillings out! Fantastic.
Have always used Ernie Ball strings of varying gauges Shinny Tops Heavy Bottoms at present VP junior Volume is on my board. Can't imagine rock n roll without this brand. I have always found the string packaging to be a sort of badge of honor, when there is a set in a guitar case or sitting on top of amp you always noticed it. Glad to see the family carrying on the tradition. Great episode as always
That all black noir St. Vincent is the stuff of dreams. I’ve never wanted an all one color guitar ever until that model came out...so, SO cool :) great video as always, they always seem so short though and leave me with questions!!
DUDE, I’ve always had respect for you because you respect the guitar community and not just your own company. And this made me love Ernie ball even more. Keep making content!
Great video! I own the volume pedal, and their wah, which although discontinued, is my favorite wah ever. I also have 8 music man guitars including my main guitar which is a custom Axis they were kind enough to make for me.
Earnie Ball.... one of my favorite guitar strings, first top end guitar strings I used and propelled my music to new fields!.... grate video, great company, great family..... thank you JHS, you are as much as an icon as Earnie Ball.....love the vibe and coolness that you transpire in your videos!
Amazing video! Been using Ernie Ball strings for over 25 years now. M-Steel strings are my jam and Everlast on my acoustic guitar. Also have Volume pedal, straps and tool kit that is always with me.
Sweet timing!. Just this morning, I was thinking that I've been using Ernie Ball strings for 40 years yet I didn't really know anything about the history of the man or family. And boom! What an incredible legacy. Aside from various gauges of Slinky's, I use the VP and straps. I'd love to own a Luke or St. V. Thanks for this great video!
I always stayed away from the stingrays because I prefer passive pick ups. They play great though. If they made a St. Vincent bass with a skinny jazzy style neck, I'd need shoulder surgery from throwing my money at them.
I've only ever seen Ernie Ball guitars at trade shows or on stage pretty much. They need to start selling these guitars at music stores especially GC for crying out loud, it ain't like they can't afford to put em out there! Heck they would probably sell them for a change! These are great instruments that sound amazing with distortion. Have ever heard John Petrucci live from the G3 tour Or any and every thing else? I t makes the hair stand up on your arms! Let's not forget guys like Albert Lee and Johnny Hiland I mean, my goodness! Thank you Ernie Ball!
It's always a good time when I watch a JHS video. Really enjoyed this one. I've known for a long time that Ernie Ball = Music Man, but never who he was as a person. Seems to me that he pushed hard! ....and that's usually the best way to get there.
I took lessons from Ernie back in late 50s. Started in Panorama, then moved to Tarzana. I played at a few grand opening of super markets, was on radio and tv once. I have fond memories
I have a volume pedal from the mid 80s that I recently sent back to the factory for refurbishment. Love that pedal even though it's so huge compared to the newer ones. Great video! Thank you!
Ever since I started playing electric guitar i have always used ernieball strings. I have tried other brands but I always go back to the slinkys, they never fail.
I play an Albert Lee HH and I think, it is one of the coolest looking guitars on earth. The neck is so smooth, I just can't put my hands from it. I love this guitar.
Your production quality is always top notch, but this episode brought it to a whole new level. It was a pleasure to watch and more important, it left me wanting more! Congrats!
Wow, another awsome video! I own a kinda unique "Emergenza" Axis SS given to me by Beth who was working at EBMM in 2005! One of the best guitars I've ever played with and definitely a keeper!
Great episode, Josh! I´m the proud owner of an Ernie Ball Silhouette HSH that I love since I put my hands on it, some twenty something years ago. I use it as my main axe and feel always surprised by the sounds I can get out of it. Love the fretboard, the pickup combinations and the ergonomics. Looking forward to hear the St. Vincent in your next episode.
Using Ernie Ball cobalt strings , and I have the Ernie Ball volume pedal with the JHS mod. Great video, can not wait to hear the distortion video with the new guitar!
I'm kinda ashamed to say that before this, all I knew about Ernie Ball is that I love his strings. Thanks for enlightening me, as always. :) That guitar looks great. I look forward to hearing it.
I bought my youngest son a Silhouette from their Sterling sub range as his first guitar. It’s great and he loves it. I have to say those St Vincent Guitars look fabulous.
Damn Josh, that guitar is KILLER!! I bought a Music Man Stringray a couple of months ago. Between that one and my Suhr Classic, I've never played (let alone owned) a finer instrument.

Great video - thank you. I bought a brand new Ernie Ball Musician Silhouette in 1991 when I was 20 years old. I still have it today, 29 years later. I can't recommend their instruments enough. I'm tempted by a St Vincent...
I have a musicman Steve Morse model. The 4 pickup one. It is inspirational. It sounds like no other guitar. It's build quality is fantastic. I'd love to own a silhouette one day as well. We shall see.
Great Video, I am Fascinated by the History of this Iconic Co. I started playing guitar using EB Super Slinky’s & now use Regular Slinky’s. I also Play an E.B. StingRay guitar & Tyne it with an EB tuner. It’s a Great American Success Story
I have an Albert Lee w/3 single coils and a trem and a dual humbucker Sub 1 w/trem from the early 2000's. They're the only 2 guitars I play anymore to the point that I have considered selling every other guitar I have. The Armada is on my radar. I love the way the play, sound and look and they're only guitars I ever felt were worth every penny I paid.
My wife has a Music Man Stringray - which is fantastic - but I will always be an Ernie Ball fan after one of the first packs of their strings I bought saw me being flown to the UK to see/meet Eric Clapton at the Royal Albert Hall. Brian and his team were great hosts and, apart from the fact I bought the strings to enter the prize draw, it went to show that sometimes there really is such a thing as a free lunch!
My gosh that guitar is beautiful. Ernie Ball products I own is the VP Jr and I exclusively (and religiously) use their strings, especially the Skinny Top Heavy Bottom. Products that I would like to own in the future would be that St Vincent guitar, it just looks gorgeous and sounds amazing (the HH version also sounds incredible), and stingray bass and stingray rs guitar. Also one of my earliest memories was watching Albert Lee's Starlicks VHS video with Stirling Biff Ball on bass.
Great video. Ernie Ball strings have been a mainstay of mine since the beginning. Can't beat the quality/cost ratio, and the sound is fantastic.
Also, their patch cables are top notch.
bad people though, they made a monopoly and any other string company cant compete because of people who arent willing to experiment.
I found this story truly fascinating and yes i use Ernie Ball guitar strings for years , electric and nylon ball end . Excellent quality and sound .
