- Scene from "Newhart", season 2 episode 20. This is the second episode to feature Peter Scolari as Michael Harris.
"Newhart" is a classic American sitcom that aired from 1982 to 1990, created by Barry Kemp. The show stars Bob Newhart as Dick Loudon, a successful New York City author who moves to the small town of Rutland, Vermont, with his wife, Joanna (played by Mary Frann), to run a quaint inn called the Stratford Inn. The series revolves around their interactions with the quirky townsfolk and the eccentric staff, including handyman George Utley (Tom Poston), the comedic and often ridiculous guests, and the strange but lovable locals.
The humor in Newhart is characterized by Newhart's deadpan delivery and the show's clever writing, often featuring absurd situations and witty banter. The series also includes memorable recurring characters, such as the “Vermont” cast of oddballs, including the brothers Larry, Darryl, and Darryl. The show explores themes of small-town life, relationships, and the challenges of running a business while maintaining a lighthearted and comedic tone.
"Newhart" is beloved for its charm, humor, and the unique setting, and it remains a significant part of television history, culminating in a famous and memorable series finale that cleverly ties the show back to Newhart's earlier series, "The Bob Newhart Show".

This episode is a masterclass demonstration of comedic timing.
What I love about this sketch is that it’s not packed with jokes. It’s all about the performances of the actors.
Classic comedy, no foul language or expletives. Just pure joy...!
They honestly don't make sitcoms this surreal anymore. This is brilliant comedy.
Bob Newhart is a comedic genius. His expressions and mannerisms alone are comedic gold.
I remember Bob Newhart's records being played on the wireless when I was a kid (I'm 71 now). He's by and far my favourite U.S. Comedian.
I'm not far behind you. Remember when he played the security guard at the Empire State Building & King Kong showed up? I roared with laughter.
Me too - I’m only 69...for a few months..and listened avidly with a good friend, John McCraken, in Kuwait, as a child - Newhart’s humor being unique, whether as a junior mathematician or one allowed to drive at such a tender age! The bus drivers’ school and L class tore us to bits!
Bob Newhart is one of the world's best comedians. I love all his shows, stand-up and books.
Don't forget the comedy album
Bob at his best, funny as hell. And he does it without being crude. Love this show
My favorite memorable line was when he said to his wife, " Here's your drink with the 3 ice cubes, dear."
Bob was so well known by this time, everyone knew what to expect from his character. He has his audience wound up so tight that one eyebrow twitch and they/we fall over laughing. And Bob (2020) is STILL doing it. What a career.
one of the best shows ever! Then I hate your show!! RIP Peter Scolari
Sure was a different time back then. I Miss those shows!!
I haven’t laughed out loud in a long time, but this did it.
When tv was still golden.
It's so perfect. No CGI or garbage acting. Just good clean fun.
Brilliant on so many levels...
And a fair evocation of what local public-affairs TV was before the digital age.
So true !!!
Still is.
"How do you know he's the world's smallest horse?"
"Look at him!"
LOL!
Michael was the perfect comic foil for Bob. Peter played the roll to the max and endlessly frustrated Bob.
This is CLASSIC Newhart here. I wish this show was still on the air.
Brilliant! I had tears streaming down my face when I watched it. Also I like the 6 min version of "Stop It". Real classics from a true comic genius.
Newhart re-runs beat today's TV by a country mile. I can't wait for season 2 on DVD!
"How do you know he's the world's smallest horse?"
"Look at him."
What could possibly be a better answer than that?
Measurement?
Bob Newhart was the perfect image of an sane man surrounded by lunatics.
Bob Newhart is a comedic genius!
This was the best show Bob Newhart ever did!! I liked Peter Scolari ALOT better than Steven Kampmann! Peter was an underrated actor. I had the privilege of talking with him when he was alive. A true individual! RIP, Peter!!
He was! Two of my favorite Michael episodes-he busts in to Dick and Joanna’s bedroom and tries to decide if he wants Stephanie or this new girl at the station; and the one where he’s singing at some restaurant. Some of the best acting I’ve ever seen!
Brilliant. Pure genius.
NEWHART is 89 now and a classic comic indeed !
'"Vermont Today, you're on the air with Dick Loudon."
"Who's this?"
How do you know he's the world's smallest horse? Look at him.
Mr Braverman... haha! A throwback to The Bob Newhart Show!! Genius!
Bob Newhart, brilliant dead pan comedian. I loved Newhart, happy memories of the show as family used to vacation in Cape Cd and the opening credits of the show used to really remind me of New England. Loved the theme tune and the cat saying meow at the end!
I agree this series had the best closing scene. Think that was sometime after the shower scene when Bobby Ewing came back from the dead. Also love the "just stop it" routine. Bob's specialty early on was always the one sided conversation, where you only heard his side, as in a phone call.
TV trivia. The kitten at the end was trademark of MTM (Mary Tyler Moore) productions. The kitten was homage to MGM’s Leo the lion.
I was a child in post war England, listening to Bob Newheart on the wireless was a treat not to be missed.
Some more TV trivia involving Mimsy, the MTM cat... When the segment for Mimsy to "meow" was being shot, they couldn't for love nor money get Mimsy to make a sound. The best they could do was to take footage of him yawning, run it backwards and insert the sound effect of a cat's meow. That ended up being the base footage used as their logo, seen at the end of all of their productions. Newhart featured Bob (as Dick) saying "Meow" in place of the cat's meow sound effect. Hill Street Blues featured a policeman's cap superimposed onto Mimsy's head, as if he were a feline officer. I don't remember WKRP having anything special added to the MTM logo at the close of their show credits, but other MTM productions often would modify the base footage with something to be partially relevant to that particular show.
Rest easy, Bob. No more horses tonight.
RIP bob
I agree. That was one of THE best of this particular series. All the cowboys were the exact opposite of what he was expecting. They didn't eat beans off of a tin plate - they had a salad bar. Really good. The BEST was the very last episode when Suzanne Pleshette guest-starred. Bob Newhart woke up back in their familiar old apartment in Chicago - The whole Vermont series had been a crazy dream. Wonderful.
Everyone knows this.
@@earlemorgan5068 That is not true.
Bob Newhart is the greatest straight man ever.
Loved when he stuffed the phone under his seat cushion!
I miss that show.
OMG! That was the best. And the one where the guy came on talking about being an alien and waiting for the "Mother Ship"
I watched this three times before I noticed that the Bassett hound was wearing a tiny saddle.
Oh man, just as good as I remember it.
I had so many of his records years ago when he told his stories like The driving instructor and Introducing tobacco to Britain classics he is a tribute to comedy
Absurd - absolutely absurd. Exactly what comedy is meant to be. They don't write 'em like that anymore.
"No, this is the world's OLDEST horse!" is the FTW response to any criticism.
This episode was a turning point for the series from greatness into legendariness. The precise moment is when Michael says "Really? News to me, Dick".
I can bring a contender for the worlds fattest horse!
Absolutely steveasat2!! Peter Scolari was my favorite character on the show. Hope you're around to read my comment in 2020
I’ve got a horse fatter than that.
God I miss this show!!
Once again Bob Newhart proves he's the world's funniest straight man.
Like, lethal. No one could stand up to a Newhart comedy attack, 1960 to now, without just getting slaughtered. I wish I could be him. Just ahead of the times even now, 60 years after he started.
Frowns in George Burns
Right...that was the best part, he was FUNNY, but played it totally straight. Then when he would occasionally get animated, it was 10x funnier because he played the straight man.
@@thespanishinquisition8617 Or jack benny
I would put Eddie Albert, Bea Arthur, Dave Foley and Kenan Thompson up there too.
Couldn't agree more. Too much for words.
Possibly the funniest sketch ever. IMO.
Those were adorable horses. May they rest in peace now.
RIP Peter Scolari.
Absolute legend
This was originally aired 40 years ago yesterday (Mar. 19, 1984).
Monty Python would be proud of this one. “That’s not a horse, it’s a Basset Hound” “No, it isn’t” “Yes it is” “Then I hate your show”
@Scott Robinson Can't you forget about politics for one short moment? Don't dirty this wonderful tv show with your filthy politics!
@Scott Robinson You Republicans are filthier than Democrats. Don't ruin every video with your politics. Give it a break!
There are certain skits that need to be part of any class on comedy. This is one.
Memories..where everyone could laugh and no one was offended.
Ok boomer
@@KBcollision keep listening to your LIZZO garbage!
@@KBcollisionYou realize how old that lame line is by now? You sound much older than a boomer 😂
@@kendallrivers1119 you realize you’re responding to a comment from two years ago?

I love Newhart!
This was a great video of the show, thankyou
Now this IS comedy at it's best!
Never seen the second show before but this is giving me Green Acres vibes which i'm loving LOL. Bob Newhart is as perfect a straight man for zany antics as Eddie Albert.
omg I haven't laughed this hard is years. I seriously have tears streaming down my face. That Basset Hound with the saddle is too much.
My tummy is sore from laughing~~~
Anyone remember the episode when Dick was hosting an all-night telethon and he became all giddy from lack of sleep? That stood out for me as especially hilarious.
Bob Newhart was hilarious.
This series is where the phrase " this is my brother Darrell and my other brother Darrell." CLASSIC!
I have a friend named Derrell and you can figure out what I try not to say all the time. I have said it and he laughed. He's a cool guy.
I have never watched him before so bloody funny
Nobody has comedic timing like Bob Newhart.
I've never seen or had even heard of this show. Very funny. Has flashes of that Monty Python style of absurdity.
For some reason I had it in my head that the first two seasons with Kirk were the only ones that were funny, but this clip has proven me very wrong. I was literally laughing out loud while watching! The obnoxious ring of that phone only adds to the hilarity; thank you for sharing this!
The first two seasons with Kirk actually almost killed the show because it wasn't all that funny and they were struggling to figure out what the show was. But once they got Julia Duffy and Peter Scolari, shot on film and made Dick a talk show host the show took off and became a comedy goldmine.
Micheal had a good eye for the entertainment value of tabloid television before it was a thing.
Tiny looks EXACTLY like the president of the University Of Vermont. It must be him. I'm sure its him...he's got gray hair and everything!
So dry and deadpan it still works.
This sketch made me laugh uncontrollably!
This is just great television
WAS.
The lady with the basset hound also played on the TV show Little House On The Prairie as A teacher when Ms. Beattle left. Ms. Wilder which later was Laura's sister in law.
One funny show, I always enjoyed it more than his first one. Once they get rid of two characters by season 3 and added Peter Scolari, Jullia Duffy and the show, the show got much funnier.
Never watched this show much back then. I should have.
I found the whole series and watched all 183 episodes. A few episodes sagged, but overall it was great writing right up until the final season when you'd figure it would go downhill. It didn't. In the middle years they were really on fire. Highly recommended!
The series finale is ultimate. They kept the studio audience in the dark until the closing scene. Was the cast also surprised?
I don't see how Bob ever kept a straight face during all that! LOL
Best tv show finale ever when this show ended.
how do you know he's the world's smallest horse?....Look at him.
I cried laughing. The funniest line I've heard in a while
One of the best lines in the entire series
Good afternoon, and... I'm sorry.
This show was special!
Brilliant!
My favourite scene from the series.
Peter Scolari from Bosom Buddies plays Michael!!
Bosom buddies sucks..stupid show.
I never knew Vermonters could be so humorous. Aren't they supposed to be kinda droll?
I used to know a married couple who had 2 miniature horses...they were really cute and so tame you could pet them like a dog. They were about the size of an average dog.
They sound like nice people. What were the horses like?
Never missed one of his shows. Not bad for a former accountant.
99 people have given this the thumbs down. Poor Souls.
Producer Michael Harris is actually played by Peter Scolari, who you might remember from the show 'Bosom Buddies,' playing opposite Tom Hanks. I'm thinking early 1980's? Very cute.
Wonder what ever happened to that Hanks guy?
Tom Hanks sucks..
What a class act.
Remember "Bob's Bob Bob Newhart Newhart Marathon"? Now that was a great TV series!
That's Columbo's Basset ! And that's his wife , finally .
Those miniature horses are cool. Some are the size of the average dog.I've seen some in person, they are really cute.
This was better than the president of the University of Vermont.
Guy’s from Hollywood, Florida. No surprise it’s Florida.
Classic , up their with the Baseball Sketch.
Brilliant on so many levels...
...and a fair evocation of what local public-affairs TV was like before the digital age.
(If you're above a certain age, you almost certainly had a daily show on your local station something like this.)
I hosted a weekly show on my college TV station in Ohio, which went out to the entire community of Marietta, called "Anything Goes!"
Today, local-access cable fills that void:
Watch it.

The perfect straight man.
His movie premiere was a Steve McQueen war movie. He was supposed to stay in a bunker and make like a large force was occupying it. The Germans had the bunker wired for sound. He was flat hilarious.
Dick doesn't need a routine.... he's just an inherently funny guy.
His name is Bob Newhart. Dick Loudon is just the character he plays in this sitcom.
Even though he always plays the most serious guy in the room. He defines the straight man routine.
Your horse isn't close to being as small as tiny here...
Well it's kinda hard to tell on TV- I don't have a very good set
Forgot how good Newhart was. The smoothest transition from stand up style to acting style till Seinfeld.
take some beating, bob Newhart
Hilarious!!! I have a mini horse too, mine is bigger. That one is really pretty.
I agree with you COMPLETELY! And I will click on LIKE on your comment as soon as I stop LAUGHING!
