This show, specifically, was good comfort food and still is today. Its interesting that it filled a void that no other show did ( to my recollection) in the 80s. In the 60s going into the 70s, CBS decided to do a rural purge getting rid of Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, Mayberry, Beverly Hillbillies in favor of gritty city based shows. I could see that, but it took the genius of Bob Newhart to resurrect the situation without the corniness. I still like the first two seasons the best. After the Michael and Stephanie thing got going I didn't watch every week. Rip Peter Scolari. You don't find shows like this today, I think the closest was Modern Family, and that had to many characters, and the death knell of many sitcoms: the kids got old (age wise,)

That was the brilliance of this ending. Shortly before this aired, an entire season of Dallas was revealed as a dream and fans of that show were rather pissed. This was a chance to poke fun; it was topical and it worked well as a joke ( a trick on the audience that was more suited to a sitcom than a drama). Suggesting that the entire show was a dream was also a big pat on the back for longtime fans of the original Bob Newhart Show. It closed a circle on Newhart's television career and tied up the ends quite nicely.

I noticed Suzanne Pleshette didn't get into the closing credits. (And she said she didn't attend the final cast party because "This wasn't my place.") This was a pure labor of love for her. ♥

Absolutely The Best ending to a TV series.....Ever! Grew up watching Bob Newhart on the variety shows in the 60's and 70's, always hilarious and clean! Bob was truly one of a kind and will be missed! RIP Bob Newhart! Thanks for the memory!

I know the under age 40 crowd get sick of hearing us old folks talk about the good old days of television, but it truly was. Such happy times with the first Newhart show followed by Mary Tyler Moore in the early '70s. The show not only had a talented star, but you could go down the list of co-stars, Talent, Talent, Talent!
