When we get to the point in your life where you think nobody's good at anything anymore, you got to understand that they are good at things. You just got lame
I was a bus driver, the only problem with being a bus driver is the passengers. One day I pulled up to a stop and the last person to exit from the front door was a woman middle aged and wearing a shoulder bag on her right shoulder. As I was watching to catch a green light to turn left as she stepped out of the bus I quickly shut the door and took off. I then observed that she was running beside the bus, people were screaming out” you got her bag open the door” I thought she was running to make the pedestrian crossing. Then noticed her bag was inside the door and she was outside, I quickly opened door whilst in motion so she could get her bag,but I still made the green light.
@Diane Newman I was commenting on someone who said he was surprised about never hearing Newhart mentioned among the greatest comedians of all time. Do you know why he isn't mention among them? HE WASN'T FUNNY.
Another Brit here, too. Indeed, never the star he should have been here. But I grew up with his humour courtesy of my parents and a rather enlightened English teacher. Always been an admirer. I remember the said English teacher showing us the movie “Hell is for Heroes”, where BN played a scene where he was doing a monologue to fool the Germans. Absolutely great.
I grew up in the 70s listening to my mom's copies of The Buttondown Mind of Bob Newhart and The Buttondown Mind Strikes Back. His routines were hilarious then, and they still are great. His timing and delivery are perfect. Thanks for posting!
The gag at the end so true to life. I was on a bus last week and a woman fell due to the driver setting off before she was seated. She had trouble walking as she left the bus. One Bob could have added was pulling away from stops sharply than poodling along at 18mph. slowing following traffic. A great comedian. God bless you Bob.

I think his telephone conversation routines were a huge influence on phone scenes in sitcoms - I've just finished going through my box set of Cheers, and there's a few times where Sam is on the phone talking to someone and every time I thought "Bob Newhart". This is probably my favourite of his routines, although "King Kong" and "Introducing Tobacco" are well up there.
The last episode of "Newhart" where he played a Vermont innkeeper...and at the end he wakes up next to Emily (Suzanne Pleshette) and realizes it was all a dream was the first time a sitcom truly blew my mind. Genius. Pure genius.
The soap opera _Dallas_ did something similar ("it was all a dream!") four years earlier. Everyone knew that, though, in 1990, and is what made it so funny.
I can’t explain it but when I first watched that scene and the set was still in darkness and the bedroom light had not yet been turned on my brain knew where we were in an instant and what was coming! I was stunned with hilarity and delight when the scene came to light. Perhaps it was because I was a “child of 60’s-70’s television” 📺👦🏻 whose instincts had been honed by the medium just as the instincts of a child growing up in the jungle can just feel that a Jaguar 🐆 is approaching. I first heard this as a teenager and loved it. Inmy working career I became a bus driving instructor for over 25 years. I always rememnered this and played the audio of this in a couple pf classes. It never failed to get several laughs.
And the people that spin in the isle and nearly break their necks, always say *thank you driver* when getting off at their stop…never ceases to amaze me 😂😂
The first time I heard this skit it was on an LP record at a friends house, so no film track just the sound track back in 1978, I was only 17 and I thought he was the funniest man I had ever heard and it was the first time I had ever heard an American accent. I thought he was brilliant, I made myself remember his name and I am so glad I did. This is the second time I have ever heard this skit and it is exactly as I remember it, nearly 35 years later... still as funny as ever...
I'll second this comment! I too was 17 when I first hear Newhart (Button Down Mind LP if memory serves). I memorized "The Driving Instructor", and presented it as a stand-up routine at our HS school's Prom. Sorry, Bob, for infringing your IP rights, but the routine went over gang-busters! Every year after that, some student got up and did stand-up!
Let me add a traveller’s defence to the Chicago bus drivers. A couple of weeks ago I dropped a Harley off at Eagle Riders near O’Hare airport. I had to get back to the city and being a Brit I really didn’t want to empty my wallet into a taxi. I was told a bus stopped right out side and would take me to Rosemount then the Blue Line into town. The bus was right on time with my Apple Maps app (it has worked so well in LA two and a half weeks earlier). The bus driver was so polite and as I proffered a twenty dollar bill (damn tourists, sorry) he said not to worry this one’s on me - I like your accent. I got none of the Newhart passenger spinning, just a desolate industrial landscape then into Rosemount where the ticket guy helped me book tickets for the next day and skipped my fare into town, because he “liked my accent”. 2,700 miles across America and it felt to friendly and welcoming and safe - even on the Freeway dodging the tyre carcasses at 75mph. Truly a beautiful country and wonderful people. Get me back to those high desert roads of total nothingness and maybe a few more days to explore Chicago properly.
Classic! Just genius comedy from Mr. Newhart and he was such a gentleman. Rarely said an ill word against anyone and easily equaled any modern comedian.
One time, driving down Fillmore, someone ran a stop sign in front of me, so I stopped (intentionally) about foot away from the driver's door and blew the horn...I will never forget the cellphone flying up out of the moon roof. I didn't use my elbow, but I was thinking of Bob Newhart!
Same here my Dad loved him, and 30 years later I searched all over to try and get him a best of CD for his 70th birthday, finally found it and the look on Dads face when he opened it was priceless and will stay with me forever, cheers Bob and take a rest youve earned it
I was lucky to see him in our local theatre a few years ago! I’m so glad we had that opportunity! He was just as funny in old age as he was in his younger days.
Danny James Not so hard for literate people with an actual real sense of humour and an eye for the absurdities of life. This was the way comedy was for more than half of the 20th century. It's only today's so-called modern 'alternative' ('alternative' meaning not actually funny) who think that profanity is,in and of itself, amusing without anything to back it up.
Funnily enough, that's the kind of skit anyone in any corner of the world (with a public transport system) can relate to. 😂 I've basically had a scenario like this in Berlin, in Dresden, in London, in Salzburg, in Budapest, in Antalya, in Cape Town, in Kalkuta... It's like there's a universal law in the bus driver profession. 😆
I heard part of this on the Midnight Special many many years ago and have been looking for it ever since! Also, I lived in Chicago for 20 years and am convinced this is a real school for drivers.
As a retired transit bus driver of 27 years in California, this had me laughing the whole time. This video should be included in the training classes as a stress relief video.
My husband and I watch Bob Newhart show almost every night, even now. We love these skits of his. Wish there were more of them! Thank you Bob Newhart for making us laugh!
What are you talking about? He received as much recognition as any comedian has ever received. He won the Grammy award with a comedy album. Not a comedy Grammy, the actual album of the year award competing against the likes of Harry Belafonte and Frank Sinatra. It was the first comedy album to ever hit number one on the Billboard chart. He had not one but two long running TV shows, each named after him. He appeared on the Ed Sullivan show eight times he guest hosted The Tonight Show 87 times, hosted SNL twice. I mean what the hell is your version of recognition lol.
There is absolutely only one thing I regret about this video, my da and his brothers are not alive to see it. imagine six irishmen all gathered at our table having a pint or two watching this and not busting a gut. This is the funniest thing, and I think of my da every time I watch it.
In my area, which is very rainy and wet during our Fall and Winter weather, he forgot to add after dropping off passengers and making sure they're all off to accelerate quickly through a big mud puddle or pothole ! Make sure to soak everybody thoroughly in cold 🥶, muddy water ; especially make sure to soak the grocery sacks [ LOL 😆 ! ].
Drove a school bus for 7 years. I could see myself and fellow drivers in that class. I never quite perfected the accelerator/brake with someone in the aisle, but I got the door slam and pull away the first time I tried it. :-) Bob Newhart is pure genius! Thanks for posting.

Gene Williams I don’t use expletives much myself but they are only words. In some circumstances they are essential to humour, which often relies on a sudden shock. Why are rude words such a big problem?
Ex driver ....hilarious....things that kept us going, senior driver jokers name badges...R. Sole...or W.H. O'Cares....always have to give them hope of catching the bus, as you drive away, watching from your rearview mirror. Priceless....As a group of people doing that job, there were days sharing stories of the days events kept it all in perspective...Bob nails the training guy
Bob's trademark was the one-sided conversation, letting the listener fill in the gaps - just brilliant. He was actually in an old war movie, Hell is for Heroes, in which a small band of Americans try to stave off an assault by a much larger German force for 48 hours, largely by convincing them they are a much larger group. They discover a wrecked pillbox in which the Germans have apparently left a live microphone for eavesdropping; the commander assigns Newhart to fake up some radio traffic and make it sound like they're a battalion. The result is hilarious! It's a long time since I've seen it, but recall Bob saying something along the lines of "More men, General? Oh, no, sir; we've got just about all the men we can handle right now..." Quite unexpected in an action flick.
his bomb disposal bit is so funny.. wonder if the film is here on RUclips... just found the trailer.. starring Steve McQueen and Bobby darrin.. introducing bob newhart.. looks like a classic 🙂
A great classic, I can't help but wish it was expanded at some point. You have to include the essentials like always being 15 minutes late or early of the scheduled stop time. Or every once in a while just driving on by "because you are full up" despite there being empty seats.
I had the actual LP record "The Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart" and one of my favorite skits is the driving instructor.....hilarious. He will be missed.
IMO Bob Newhart is the best comedian of all time. He took Jack Benny delivery and became the first person ever to have the #1 and #2 album simultaneously with the Button Up Mind of Newhart and The Butun Down mind of Bob Newhart. A true National Treasure
I can imagine back in the day, lying in bed listening to this on vinyl. ..Much as I do today listening to Ricky Gervais podcast but on my iPad. Simple pleasures are always the best..👍
While visiting Philadelphia, i tried to catch a bus to Franklin St. i was young and fit, so when he pulled a way i gave chase. When he was caught by a red light, i gained on him. This repeated for 3 miles and i caught it, climbed on and asked if this bus goes to Franklin St. he pointed out windshield “THIS is Franklin crossing right here. I stepped off the bus. HE was a master bus driver! Cheers!
When I think of Bob Newhart I think of this joke except that in an earlier version the driver is instructed to use a "heel-toe, heel-toe" motion with the accelerator to rock the passenger with the packages back and forth down the aisle until they and the packages end up spread all over the floor at the back of the bus...CLASSIC!
I was raised on Bob Newhart, among others, and I have fond memories of laughing every time I heard this on family road trips. Now I'm having even more fun corrupting my kids!
Having grown up in Oak Park it is clear that Bob has a fond appreciation for it, same as most who came from there or grew up there. Cultural mecca over there.
In regards to intelligent material, BN ranks as one of the best comedians in the last 100 years. Not a swear word. No wild antics. He never raises his voice. He is a remarkable story teller and that is what I feel makes a great comic. He can hold people in their seats endlessly wait for the next word!!!
RIP Mr Newhart.
Thanks for the laughs you will be missed.
I accidentally caught this back in the 1970's on radio and found it on good old youtube. it's genius. Poor Mrs Selkirk hope she was well paid
Pure gold. Another great gone. No one comes close these days. No swearing, no innuendos. Great comedian.
I love the last episode of Newhart when he woke with Emily in bed and told her about his weird dream about being an inn keeper!
@jameskerner7782 yes!! Totally great, and I just heard his wife Ginnie suggested the idea! 😄

mr g yeah i know he's not dead. I did say "he IS a comic genuis" doubt if he'll visit my area for me to see
Gene Williams I don’t use expletives much myself but they are only words.
Oh, no, sir; we've got just about all the men we can handle right now..."
Quite unexpected in an action flick.
@carmium thanks for sharing that!
his bomb disposal bit is so funny..
wonder if the film is here on RUclips...
just found the trailer..
starring Steve McQueen and Bobby darrin..
introducing bob newhart..
looks like a classic 🙂
Thank you for some of the very best laughs in my life.
RIP Bob, thanks for the laughs. As a bus driver, this is hilarious!
A great classic, I can't help but wish it was expanded at some point. You have to include the essentials like always being 15 minutes late or early of the scheduled stop time. Or every once in a while just driving on by "because you are full up" despite there being empty seats.
What a marvellous man, without malice and such a powerful understanding of the human condition
I had the actual LP record "The Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart" and one of my favorite skits is the driving instructor.....hilarious. He will be missed.
He makes me start smiling before he even gets to the funny parts.
My condolences to the friends and family of Bob Newhart
As a former bus driver to me he is spot on😂
IMO Bob Newhart is the best comedian of all time. He took Jack Benny delivery and became the first person ever to have the #1 and #2 album simultaneously with the Button Up Mind of Newhart and The Butun Down mind of Bob Newhart. A true National Treasure
RIP Bob. Thanks for all the laughs ❤
"Don't, don't tell me Walt. You stick it in your ear, right Walt?" Incredible.
Cheers!
I'm 70yo
I remember watching Bob Newhart when I was a kid and cracking up
He must have been in my bus driving school when I got my PSV back in the 80's!
When I think of Bob Newhart I think of this joke except that in an earlier version the driver is instructed to use a "heel-toe, heel-toe" motion with the accelerator to rock the passenger with the packages back and forth down the aisle until they and the packages end up spread all over the floor at the back of the bus...CLASSIC!
he is a national treasure
RUclips reading my mind again. I just received Bob's comedy albums for Christmas and it included this skit!
"Tomorrow we will study the mispronunciation of street names." :D
Student driver training was my favorite!
I was raised on Bob Newhart, among others, and I have fond memories of laughing every time I heard this on family road trips. Now I'm having even more fun corrupting my kids!
The Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart is one of the best comedy albums
Having grown up in Oak Park it is clear that Bob has a fond appreciation for it, same as most who came from there or grew up there. Cultural mecca over there.
It's definitely one of my favorites.
In regards to intelligent material, BN ranks as one of the best comedians in the last 100 years. Not a swear word. No wild antics. He never raises his voice. He is a remarkable story teller and that is what I feel makes a great comic. He can hold people in their seats endlessly wait for the next word!!!
Absolutely, my favorite part of his act was when he would smash the watermelon’s with a mallet, pure comic genius.
